Desperado1
Su Wenwen cautiously approached her front door. From inside, she could hear Sisi’s cries and a man’s abusive shouts. Her gaze hardened. Just as she was about to open the door, the male landlord opened his own door a crack, beckoning Su Wenwen over and signaling for her to enter his apartment first.
Su Wenwen and the villain entered the landlord’s apartment. They saw Liu Zhiwen lying on the sofa, his abdomen covered in blood. His pale face looked as if he could close his eyes and die at any moment.
When he saw Su Wenwen, his eyes reddened, and he kept apologizing.
“What happened?” Su Wenwen asked calmly.
The male landlord choked out, “When Zhiwen went out to find food and was coming back, he ran into a man in a police uniform. He thought it was the rescue team, so he brought the man back.”
“That man looked very gentle and refined, and he kept telling us the rescue team would arrive soon. I figured since you all were out and I didn’t know when you’d be back, what if we missed the rescue? So I asked the man to wait a bit. Who knew this man was so strange? He insisted on having the child in your apartment open the door.”
“That child saw a policeman and let her guard down, opening the door to let him in. When he saw all the supplies you had hoarded in your apartment, he immediately showed his true colors. He threatened us with a gun to cooperate and wait for you to come back. We refused, so he shot and wounded my son, and my wife… he killed her too.”
After speaking, the male landlord squatted on the ground, covering his face with his blood-soaked hands and weeping. As he cried, his features, which usually seemed a bit sleazy, transformed into an expression of desolate grief.
Su Wenwen went to Liu Zhiwen’s side, lifted his shirt, and glanced at the wound. Although it had been crudely bandaged, the bleeding hadn’t stopped; fresh red blood continued to spread.
“How long ago was he shot?”
“About two hours, I think!” the male landlord’s voice trembled. “We can’t go to a hospital now. I don’t know what to do anymore.”
Luo Xi rolled up her sleeves and said, “The bullet needs to be taken out, and the wound cauterized with high heat. Whether he lives or dies will depend on his luck.”
Hearing this, a glimmer of hope appeared in the male landlord’s eyes. Following the villain’s instructions, he found alcohol, tweezers, and a small knife.
The villain unwrapped the gauze around Liu Zhiwen’s waist, sterilized the tweezers with high heat, and before starting, warned Liu Zhiwen not to make any sound, lest the man in the apartment opposite hear them.
Liu Zhiwen bit down on a towel. The moment the tweezers probed into the wound, his face contorted violently. He didn’t even cry out; he fainted directly from the pain.
The male landlord wept in distress, tightly gripping Liu Zhiwen’s hand. Su Wenwen assisted the villain, though she wasn’t much help.
When the bullet was finally extracted, Su Wenwen noticed that the villain wasn’t as composed as she appeared. A large patch of glistening sweat on her forehead had dampened a few strands of her hair. Because her hands were sterilized, she couldn’t raise them to wipe it away.
So, Su Wenwen took a tissue and helped her wipe it. Only after Liu Zhiwen’s wound was cauterized by the heat did the bleeding finally, barely, stop.
They applied anti-inflammatory medicine to his wound and re-bandaged it. Whether he would survive now depended on his luck.
Su Wenwen glanced at the time; half an hour had passed. She was a little worried about Sisi, so she discussed with the villain how to subdue the man in the apartment opposite.
The man had a gun, and his methods were so cruel and efficient. There was a high probability he was a desperado, not a real policeman.
If they didn’t want Sisi to get hurt, the best way was to pretend they didn’t know anything, approach the man, and then wait for an opportunity to act.
“No, it’s too dangerous for you two girls to go. He probably doesn’t know you’re back. Why don’t you hide well, and I’ll lure him out?” The male landlord looked at Su Wenwen and said, “If something happens to me, can you take my son to a safe place to seek refuge?”
“Before, when we saw you return safely, my wife and I planned to have our son follow you.” The male landlord pleaded, “My wife, although she had a sharp tongue, wasn’t a bad person at heart. She always pestered you for rent, but after coming home, she’d worry about how hard it was for a young woman like you struggling out here alone. That’s why she kept delaying collecting the rent. For my wife’s sake, please help me!”
Su Wenwen was stunned. So that day, when she saw the landlord and his wife discussing something strangely, they had been planning to have Liu Zhiwen follow her. But she couldn’t even find a safe place for herself, so how could she help find one for his son?
Besides, she was about to leave this place. If she brought a wounded person, the blood would attract a lot of trouble for her. She didn’t want to take risks for someone she wasn’t very familiar with. She was just a passerby cannon fodder; just staying alive was already very difficult for her.
The male landlord’s eyes weren’t large to begin with, and now they were swollen from crying. He could only force them open to look at Su Wenwen. When he saw her shake her head, he slumped powerlessly onto the sofa, watching her leave.
Su Wenwen and the villain stood in front of her apartment door. She slid the knife she was holding upwards, wedging it between her back and her backpack. She then used an item to restore her stamina and bought three cakes and three pieces of dried meat from the Shop as backup.
With her stamina slightly recovered, Su Wenwen didn’t feel as tired. She tried hard to calm herself and then used her key to open the door.
Lin Sisi’s small figure sat motionless on the sofa. Tears streamed down her face, but she kept her lips pressed together, not crying out loud, looking especially pitiful and scared. When she saw Su Wenwen and the villain, she only dared to look at them with helpless eyes.
The man sat beside Lin Sisi. Dressed in a police uniform, he exuded an air of righteousness. Unfortunately, the moment his eyes landed on Su Wenwen and the villain, that righteousness vanished completely, replaced by an unsettling stare.
The police-issue gun was in the man’s hand.
He patted Lin Sisi’s head and chuckled, “Yoho, your two big sisters are back, huh? Looks like they couldn’t bear to leave you behind.”
Lin Sisi’s mouth puckered, and her tears flowed even more.
Seeing Lin Sisi’s deathly pale face, a surge of anger rose in Su Wenwen’s heart. Just as she was about to lash out at the man, the villain suddenly leaned in, hiding behind her with an appearance of being frail and terrified.
“You… you’re not a policeman.”
The villain’s voice rose a few pitches due to fear, making it sound quite convincing. But Su Wenwen knew the villain couldn’t possibly be afraid of this man. With a little thought, she understood the villain’s intention.
Su Wenwen also took half a step back, leaning against the villain. Both of them put on an appearance of being weak and helpless. Seeing this, the man’s smile deepened.
“That’s right, I’m not a policeman. I just killed a fool who saved me and took his clothes.” The man didn’t point the gun at them but beckoned, “Put down your backpacks and come over here. Don’t worry… I won’t kill you.”
Su Wenwen said, “You really won’t kill us?”
“Of course not. There’s no need for me to kill everyone I see. If there were no living people in this world, it would be boring for me to live alone, right?” The man said with a smile, his eyes narrowed.
Su Wenwen and the villain remained huddled together tightly, not obeying the man’s order to put down their backpacks. The man knew his prey couldn’t escape and was very patient. He didn’t get angry but instead stood up and walked towards the two. Seeing them continuously backing away, he even put on a gentle expression, appearing completely harmless.
“Don’t be afraid. I really won’t hurt you.”
He licked his lips, clearly excited by seeing others afraid. Once he got closer, his expression changed completely. His eyes revealed a crazed look, and his smile was pathological—more twisted and ugly than the zombies outside.
He reached out and grabbed Su Wenwen’s arm.
Su Wenwen stumbled and fell right against his chest. Seeing the man lick his lips, she gave a slight smile and, with a reverse grip, clamped down on the man’s wrist that was holding the gun.
The man’s gaze turned cold. He tried to shake her off, but he found that this woman in front of him was surprisingly stronger than him. Panicked, he used both hands to try and wrest the gun away. The villain kicked out, striking his hand with extreme force. He cried out in pain but still didn’t let go of the gun; instead, he deliberately tried to pull the trigger.
Su Wenwen noticed the man’s intention and quickly bent his fingers backward. However, a deafening gunshot still made Su Wenwen’s heart jolt.
Fortunately, this shot didn’t hit anyone.
The villain circled behind the man, preparing for a sneak attack. But the man reacted quickly, yanking Su Wenwen’s light body around. The villain’s fist almost hit Su Wenwen, forcing her to retreat and circle to the other side. However, the man kept dragging Su Wenwen around as a human shield to block the villain’s attacks.
The man’s strength was also considerable. Though he looked thin, he was quite sturdy. Su Wenwen gritted her teeth, realizing that the man was not only a desperado but also a trained fighter. She, on the other hand, only had brute strength and would find it very difficult to subdue him.
She could only try to create an opportunity for the villain.
Su Wenwen kicked out at the man, but he countered with a kick to her ankle. The pain from the hard sole of his leather shoe almost made her let go, and her HP2 also dropped by about ten points.
She decisively used all the dried meat and cakes she had bought from the Shop. Her stamina recovered, and her strength increased slightly. She pried the man’s fingers open. The man yelped in pain, and somehow—he didn’t know what he pressed—the magazine fell out of the gun and clattered to the floor.
The man forcefully pushed Su Wenwen away.
Since the gun no longer had a magazine, Su Wenwen didn’t continue to grapple with the man. She retreated with the momentum, happening to fall back right beside the villain. Unexpectedly, the man actually had another gun, hidden on a strap inside his clothes.
The cold muzzle was aimed at Su Wenwen. The villain stepped in front of Su Wenwen, but Su Wenwen’s agility had reached ten points, and her reflexes were no slower than the villain’s. Subconsciously, she hugged the villain and spun them both around.
Hearing the gunshot, Su Wenwen thought she was done for. But the expected pain didn’t come. Instead, the man’s bloodcurdling scream echoed through the room, so loud that even the male landlord opened his door to check on the situation.
The door hadn’t been closed properly earlier. The mutated landlady had appeared at the doorway at some unknown point. During Su Wenwen’s struggle with the man, she had unintentionally pushed him towards the landlady.
Hot blood splattered everywhere.
The man struggled with convulsing limbs, aimed the gun at the landlady’s head, and pulled the trigger again. The landlady fell with the shot, collapsing on top of him.
The man felt his body temperature dropping and knew he didn’t have long to live. He glared viciously at Su Wenwen, tremblingly raised his hand, and still resolutely aimed the gun at her.
Before he could pull the trigger, the male landlord stomped on his hand and then used a pair of scissors to stab his face until it was beyond recognition.
