I Pursued My Scummy Ex’s White Moonlight – Chapter 15

Promotion Mission

Su Wenwen felt quite uneasy leaving Lin Sisi home alone, but the child was still too young and couldn’t run fast. Following them would only be more dangerous.

Before heading out, Su Wenwen repeatedly warned Lin Sisi not to open the door no matter what happened. Lin Sisi nodded her little head, a bit anxious. After the two left and closed the door, she obediently bolted it from the inside.

“Sisters, be careful.”

Su Wenwen’s period hadn’t completely finished, so she had deliberately sprayed a lot of perfume on herself. Zombies were very sensitive to the smell of blood but indifferent to perfume.

Just then, the door opposite them also happened to open. Seeing the landlord’s son, Su Wenwen even suspected he had been squatting by his door waiting for her to come out.

The landlord’s son was named Liu Zhiwen1. His name sounded quite artistic, but he himself was very burly, 1.8 meters tall, and looked to weigh around 160 jin2. His features were regular; at least he didn’t look as shifty-eyed and rat-faced3 as his father.

Liu Zhiwen was also carrying a backpack and holding a kitchen knife. He seemed quite happy to see Su Wenwen and said, “Wenwen, are you also preparing to go out and find food?”

“Sort of!” Su Wenwen replied perfunctorily.

Liu Zhiwen’s gaze then shifted to the villain behind Su Wenwen. Left with no choice, Su Wenwen politely introduced Luo Xi. After all, Lin Sisi was still at home, and she didn’t want to offend anyone, lest Lin Sisi come to harm while they were out.

“Then I’ll go with you to find food. We can look out for each other on the way.” Liu Zhiwen was very enthusiastic and took the lead, walking ahead.

Su Wenwen glanced at Luo Xi, a bit unsure how to deal with Liu Zhiwen. The plea for help in her eyes was quite obvious.

Luo Xi simply said, “Follow him for now.”

Su Wenwen nodded and followed Luo Xi downstairs.

Liu Zhiwen looked back once, his gaze solely on Su Wenwen, who was behind Luo Xi. His eyes curved into a smile, looking very shy. He wanted to talk to her, but seeing Luo Xi’s cold gaze made him feel slightly uncomfortable, so he dismissed the thought.

They had just reached the second floor when they heard the faint sounds of zombies walking. Liu Zhiwen stopped, tightened his grip on the kitchen knife, and raised a hand to signal the two behind him not to move.

Su Wenwen paid him no mind. After all, there were rewards for killing zombies. She walked straight past Luo Xi and Liu Zhiwen to the front and looked down towards the bottom of the stairs.

A few zombies with missing limbs were milling about at the bottom of the stairwell. The clothes the zombies wore looked somewhat familiar. Su Wenwen squinted. Although she couldn’t see the face of one particular zombie clearly, it was wearing a gold bracelet on its hand.

This gold bracelet was Hong-jie’s favorite; she wore it every day. Every time Su Wenwen came home from work, Hong-jie would greet her and chat for a while, telling her all the gossip about the apartment residents.

She would occasionally give Su Wenwen some small snacks. She was a very warm-hearted big sister. To think she had also become a zombie. Looking at the bite marks on her face, she must have been in extreme pain.

Su Wenwen pursed her lips.

She rushed downstairs. Hong-jie heard the sound and opened her mouth to let out a low growl, but before the sound could fully escape, her neck was sliced by the extra long watermelon knife. Immediately after, Su Wenwen spun around, dodged an oncoming zombie, and with a backhand strike, slashed the zombie’s nape.

Because her strength had increased, the supposedly tough bones felt like cutting tofu the moment the watermelon knife struck. She easily separated the head from the body. The zombie fell to the ground, the wound on its neck neat, with no flesh torn open.

Liu Zhiwen stared blankly at the scene before him, not noticing a zombie running towards him. He only snapped back to reality when Su Wenwen shouted. Seeing the zombie’s rotten and twisted face, his brain subconsciously issued the command to dodge, but his body didn’t react at all.

Just as the zombie was about to bite him, a long knife stabbed directly through its mouth. However, the zombie wasn’t killed; the blade was stuck in its mouth, and it could only wave its hands to grab Liu Zhiwen.

Liu Zhiwen subconsciously took a step back, but he forgot he was on the stairs. His heel caught on a step, and he plopped down on his butt. The slight pain jolted him, and then he saw Luo Xi gripping the knife handle with both hands and slicing forcefully.

Half of the zombie’s jaw was severed, its tongue writhing in mid-air. Then, Su Wenwen finished it off with a strike from behind. It collapsed limply to the ground, brain matter oozing from the wound, emitting a viscous and disgusting smell.

Liu Zhiwen’s face was deathly pale. He covered his mouth and then sat on the stairs, vomiting. Su Wenwen saw all sorts of vomit spewing from his mouth, making her feel a bit nauseous too.

However, this was a normal reaction for anyone seeing such a scene. Su Wenwen had been just like Liu Zhiwen at the beginning, even vomiting more miserably. In contrast, the villain was completely unfazed, as if nothing had happened.

Luo Xi casually tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, then used a hair tie to put her long hair up. Her entire demeanor became sharper, her gaze more piercing. Su Wenwen stood below, looking up at her, as if gazing at a goddess of war.

Liu Zhiwen lifted his shirt, wiped his mouth clean, and stood up weakly, saying, “Wenwen, you’re amazing.”

Then he looked at Luo Xi and added, “You’re amazing too. I was just thinking of protecting you guys. Looks like I was overthinking it.”

“I’ve checked the nearby convenience stores; there’s basically no food left. We need to go to streets further away to find food.”

When Liu Zhiwen spoke, his gaze was clear, and Su Wenwen didn’t feel anything was amiss. However, she still remained guarded, merely nodding and letting him lead the way.

To avoid zombies, the three of them took a small path. This path was usually inaccessible to cars and had few people.

In the apocalypse, there were naturally fewer zombies here too.

The sky was even gloomier than yesterday. The vast city was devoid of human presence, and the air felt chillingly cold. Thunder rumbled from time to time. The SOS bedsheets that used to hang from buildings were gone.

Living people were becoming fewer and fewer.

This created a sense of unease, a fear that one might be the only person left in the world. So, occasionally, when survivors in buildings saw the group of three, they would open their windows, watch, and then make hand gestures to indicate that there were zombies ahead.

If there were too many, Su Wenwen would take a detour.

If there weren’t too many, she and the villain would take care of them.

Although Su Wenwen was strong, she killed zombies based on instinct and experience accumulated from her previous life. There were several times she almost got caught by zombies, and it was the villain who, with her agile skills, pulled her away just in the nick of time.

“Why are you rushing forward so recklessly?” From Luo Xi’s perspective, Su Wenwen was a bit too hasty and not calm enough when killing zombies. If she hadn’t been constantly observing Su Wenwen, she might not have been able to help in time.

“I just wanted to save some time. Sisi is still waiting for us at home!” Su Wenwen didn’t know how to explain, but she also realized she had been too anxious.

Luo Xi didn’t say anything but made Su Wenwen walk behind her, not allowing her to rush to the front. Feeling guilty, Su Wenwen obediently followed.

She had gained a total of seven attribute points. Su Wenwen allocated them all to agility. She didn’t feel any change in her body. Just as she was about to investigate further, Liu Zhiwen walked over.

“I haven’t been to that convenience store up ahead.”

That convenience store was actually a very small supermarket. The supermarket door was wide open, the surrounding glass was somewhat yellowed, and there were a few bloodstains. Peeking inside through the glass, all one could see were messy shelves.

However, supermarkets usually had warehouses. The group entered the supermarket. Occasionally, they could pick up intact packaged food from the floor, which Liu Zhiwen put into his backpack. He looked at Su Wenwen’s and Luo Xi’s bulging backpacks and belatedly realized that the two of them didn’t seem to be out just for food.

“Wenwen, what’s in your backpack?”

“Food. We have other things to do this time,” Su Wenwen said. “You can go back after you fill your backpack.”

“What is it? Do you need my help?”

“We can handle it.”

Hearing Su Wenwen say this, Liu Zhiwen lowered his head and gave a wry smile. “Alright, I’ll head back once my backpack is full. Don’t worry about the little one at your place; my parents and I will keep an eye out from across the hall.”

Su Wenwen paused. “Thank you for your trouble.”

Liu Zhiwen searched inside the supermarket for a while, managing to stuff almost all the edible items from the store into his backpack. He walked to the last row of shelves, where there was a small door that looked like it led to a storage room.

There were many bloodstains on the door, but he didn’t pay much attention, as there were bloody handprints everywhere. Just as he was about to pull the handle to open the door, he suddenly felt the doorknob vibrate. Startled, he pulled his hand back, pressed his ear against the door, and listened carefully. He could hear faint, low growls coming from inside.

“There seem to be zombies in the storage room.”

Su Wenwen walked over, took out her phone, got down on the ground, turned on the flashlight, and shone the light through the crack under the door. She could see many pairs of feet pacing back and forth inside like headless flies.

“Roar!”

The zombies, seeing the light, threw themselves against the door from the ground. Su Wenwen quickly put away her phone and pushed a shelf to block the door.

Although Liu Zhiwen’s backpack wasn’t full yet, he no longer had the courage to explore further. He said, “I’ll take this food back first. You guys be careful too.”

Su Wenwen nodded. Watching Liu Zhiwen’s retreating figure, she suddenly felt that this person wasn’t bad, including the landlord couple. They seemed sharp and harsh, always urging for rent, but in reality, they would always give Su Wenwen a few extra days.

“Stop looking. Let’s go.”

Su Wenwen followed Luo Xi out of the supermarket.

With just the two of them, their movements became much more coordinated. The villain was superior to Su Wenwen in both speed and reaction time. If zombies couldn’t catch her, they would go for Su Wenwen.

Each time, Su Wenwen would sever their fragile necks with a single slash. Moreover, Su Wenwen discovered that after increasing her agility points, she could easily perform many difficult moves like backbends and flying kicks. Also, the zombies’ movements seemed much slower in her eyes.

As her attribute points increased, Su Wenwen finally maxed out all her stats. Then, she heard the system notification.
