I Pursued My Scummy Ex’s White Moonlight – Chapter 115

The next morning, Luo Xi1 received a call from Ji Qingshuang2. Although not much was said between them, after the call ended, Su Wenwen3 could clearly feel that Luo Xi’s heart wasn’t there4.

She would stare blankly while drinking water, gaze out the window from time to time, then lower her head to look at the time on her phone. It was hard not to notice such an abnormal state. Su Wenwen asked directly, “What’s wrong with you?”

“My brother is back.”

Su Wenwen understood instantly. Hearing the news of her brother’s return, Luo Xi wanted to go and pick him up, but the more important matter right now was protecting Lin Wan5; she couldn’t leave this place.

“How about we bring Lin Wan along? In any case, we have to keep her with us twenty-four hours a day. It doesn’t make much of a difference where we go.”

“Okay.”

Because Luo Xi’s brother had brought back many survivors, he didn’t arrive at the base until the afternoon. He and Luo Xi had been very close since childhood; Luo Xi had learned to fight from him, with the express purpose of keeping those undiscerning men and women away from her. He was terrified his precious little sister would be abducted or bullied by someone.

In short, he had a sister-complex6.

Su Wenwen spotted Luo Xi’s brother in the crowd at a single glance. His looks were about thirty percent similar to Luo Xi’s. He was very tall and ran over with long strides, opening his arms toward Luo Xi. But before he could embrace her, he was pushed away by a palm from Luo Xi.

Luo Ling7 sighed, “You haven’t changed a bit, just like before. We haven’t seen each other in so long, can’t you bend the rules and give your big brother a hug?”

“No.” Luo Xi saw that his clothes were so dirty their original color was unrecognizable and refused him without any courtesy.

Ahem… Little sister, I’m actually injured…” Luo Ling clutched his heart with one hand and reached toward Luo Xi with the other. “I was holding my breath this whole time, and now I feel a little unsteady. Can you support me?”

“No.”

“Sigh, so heartless…”

Although Luo Xi had rejected Luo Ling’s attempt at closeness with a deadpan expression, her eyes were filled with a soft, gentle smile, full of the gratitude of a family reunion.

Ji Qingshuang gently placed a hand on Su Wenwen’s shoulder and said, “Luo Xi has never needed others much, even from a young age. Forget a hug, she was never very close even to me, her mother. I used to be quite afraid she would grow old alone. Thankfully, she has you by her side. Now I can rest assured.”

Why does that sound like last words?

Pah, pah!

“You absolutely can’t rest assured. Don’t be fooled by Luo Xi’s ‘don’t touch this old lady’8 act. She actually cares about you all a great deal. She’s just thin-skinned and too much of a aojiao9 to get close to you.”

Ji Qingshuang was amused into laughter. “Alright, from now on, I’ll keep looking after you two. Don’t you dare find me annoying.”

“Of course not.”

“Tell Luo Xi for me later, don’t tell Luo Ling about Luo Tianyang10 for the time being.” Ji Qingshuang whispered this in Su Wenwen’s ear, then gave her a little push forward, saying with a smile to Luo Ling, “Lingling, meet your sister’s wife11.”

Before Su Wenwen could even process the meaning of the previous sentence, she was suddenly pushed in front of him. She couldn’t help but call out shyly, “Hello, Gege12.”

Luo Ling sized up Su Wenwen, then glanced at the completely unruffled expression on Luo Xi’s face. Only then did his mouth fall open in astonishment, and he stammered, “Hey… uh… hello there!”

“Um… does ‘sister’s wife’ mean what I think it means?”

“Ah… so my little sister has a wife?”

Wuwu, my little sister is all grown up.”

“I used to be so worried my sister would be abducted by some stinking man. I never expected that my sister would be the one to bring home someone else’s daughter! I don’t mean that in a bad way, it’s absolutely wonderful! You can rest assured, my sister is very focused in everything she does, so she’ll be the same way with her feelings.”

“If possible, our family should find a time to gather around for a meal. It would be so lively…”

He talked so much that Su Wenwen couldn’t find a gap to reply. It was all Luo Ling talking to himself, eventually moving himself to the point of tears, like a big fool, which was somewhat at odds with his handsome face.

But because of this, Su Wenwen’s nervous mood relaxed a lot, and she replied with a smile, “Let’s eat together when Gege and the Commander-in-Chief aren’t busy!”

“Hey, definitely, but…” Luo Ling’s face tensed, suddenly becoming serious. An intangible, sharp aura burst forth, and coupled with his tall frame, he looked just like a boss in the workplace staring down his employees. The image of the big fool from just a moment ago was completely gone.

Su Wenwen straightened her back and listened intently as he said, “Can you say ‘Gege’ a couple more times for me? Your voice is so soft. I’ve always wanted my sister to speak to me with a softer temper, but every time she talks to me, she’s so fierce…”

Su Wenwen was dumbfounded.

Luo Xi snapped coldly, “Luo Ling, cut the crap. How many survivors did you bring back, how many are ability users, how many people died on the way back, is anyone infected, are there any extra supplies—you haven’t reported any of this yet.”

“Don’t be in such a hurry…” Seeing Luo Xi’s gaze grow colder, Luo Ling quickly changed his tune. “Alright, alright, I’ll report it after the survivors are settled.”

Looking out, there were truly a great number of survivors that Luo Ling had brought back. There was a dense sea of heads13 everywhere. Some people were injured, lying on stretchers, and were being isolated by the guards.

At a rough estimate, there were nearly a thousand people. Such a large population meant a greater consumption of resources, a need for more housing, and the need to arrange work for these people reasonably. Furthermore, they had to identify if there were any individuals with ulterior motives.

The workload was immense, and they were short-staffed.

So, Su Wenwen and Luo Xi helped arrange matters. Lin Wan obediently followed behind the two of them, observing the crowd for any infected individuals.

Luo Ling held extremely high prestige among these people. Wherever he walked, people would greet him. If they had food on them, they would also proactively offer it to him, though he never accepted any of it.

This reminded Su Wenwen of her own team members who had gone through thick and thin with her. When she went out onto the streets, she would occasionally run into them, and they would greet her with the same respect.

“Hey, let me introduce someone to you. Her ability is a bit special, quite powerful,” Luo Ling waved to Su Wenwen and Luo Xi. “And right now, I’m the only one who knows about her ability. I want to leave her by my mom’s side, so I can guarantee her safety.”

It seemed Luo Ling also had his own shrewdness14, knowing to leave a back hand15. So this person’s ability must be truly very useful, so much so that Luo Ling had to hide it in front of so many people.

Luo Ling pointed not far away.

When Su Wenwen saw that person’s back, she felt an inexplicable sense of familiarity. As she got closer, this feeling grew stronger and stronger, until the person turned around. A feeling of joyous surprise made her uncontrollably shout, “Wang Xuan16!”

Wang Xuan, Su Wenwen’s best friend17.

After the apocalypse broke out, aside from a few phone calls, they had lost all contact. It wasn’t that Su Wenwen hadn’t worried, but the world was vast and filled with zombies everywhere; she had no idea where to find her best friend.

The moment Wang Xuan saw Su Wenwen, her eyes reddened. She stepped forward and hugged her tightly, her voice trembling slightly. “I thought I’d never see you again in this life. I never imagined we’d meet again one day. Thank you. If you hadn’t called me in time, I wouldn’t have survived until now.”

Back then, because of her soft-heartedness, she had attracted the covetous eyes of her neighbors over her supplies. It was Su Wenwen who had suggested she abandon the supplies at home and flee.

She later heard that after the neighbors finished all the supplies in her home, they organized a trip to find food outside. However, those few people never returned after they left; it was unknown if they died or fled.

The older sister living next door to her was pregnant, and her husband didn’t dare to go out, so he had brandished a knife and robbed the neighbors of their food. Later, when everyone was truly starving and had lost their minds, they began to kill each other.

The sister was terrified and hid at the bottom of the stairwell, her legs too weak to stand, sitting on the ground. A corpse fell right in front of her eyes, and its staring, red eyes scared her so badly that her water broke. For the sake of her child, the sister didn’t know where she found the strength to cry out to the man for help.

Perhaps that man had a crisis of conscience, or perhaps he wanted to protect his child, but when he saw the woman’s water had broken, he actually used his own body to block the stairwell entrance, allowing the sister to escape successfully. She was later taken in by a team of survivors, and only then was she able to tell others what had happened.

Wang Xuan had only heard bits and pieces18, but she could imagine how perilous the situation was. If not for Su Wenwen’s advice, she would have been one of those hacked to death.

“What about your parents?”

Hearing this, Wang Xuan immediately choked up and shook her head. Although she had left with her parents, there were zombies everywhere at that time. To protect her and her mother, her father was bitten to death by zombies.

Later, although they entered a temporary base, food was scarce. Her mother saved all her food for her, which caused her own health to deteriorate and her immune system to weaken.

On the day the Red Rain arrived, both she and her mother had a high fever. She managed to survive, but her mother lost her life because of it.

Wang Xuan watched with her own eyes as her mother turned into a zombie, and she was the one who personally put her mother to rest. When this was discovered by others, everyone suspected she was also infected and unanimously wanted to drive her away.

At that time, she was powerless to argue. Looking at their eyes that wished for nothing more than to hack her to death, she felt only despair and fear.

Without her family, Wang Xuan also lost the will to live. She dragged her exhausted body away from the temporary base and hid in a courtyard house19 near the base, preparing to wait for death.

But when she faced the dark and silent night alone, she felt she had let her parents down, yet she was also afraid of living alone.

It wasn’t until the next morning, when Wang Xuan looked at the blue sky, white clouds, and the birds flying past, that she finally resolved to live a good life.

There was a plot of land in the courtyard, so she went outside to find seeds to plant. These seeds had been soaked in the Red Rain before, but they hadn’t molded. Instead, they looked very plump. After being planted in the ground, their growth rate was astonishing.

On the very day the seeds sprouted, for some unknown reason, a large number of people in the temporary base suddenly became infected. All the living people inside were eventually slaughtered.

It was only later that Luo Ling told her it was because the Red Rain had caused a latent zombie virus to grow in everyone’s bodies. Once a person died, even if they weren’t bitten by a zombie, they would still turn into one.
