After the Mother Nest was annihilated, Ji Qingshuang ordered her people to strengthen patrols along the coast and to break up all the surrounding ice floes to prevent zombies from crossing the sea.
As for food, Lin Wan had personally mixed and cultivated seeds that were resistant to both cold and heat, and had a short growth cycle. If the seeds were sown now, they could be harvested for consumption in two months. These seeds solved the problem of a fire singing one’s eyebrows1 caused by the shortage of supplies.
The base was located by the sea, so there was no shortage of water resources. Looking at it this way, the development of the sea base was proceeding smoothly, showing a trend of thriving and flourishing.
However, other bases were not necessarily so lucky. Since the apocalypse began, this land had been divided into four major bases in the east, west, south, and north. The south was led by the sea base, while the leading base in the north sent news just last night that it had been breached.
A mature Mother Nest had unleashed a zombie tide, and the zombies it produced were all evolved mutant types. They could ascend to the heavens above and burrow into the earth below, making it impossible to win by defending2.
Fortunately, the news about the Mother Nest was transmitted in time. The major bases had long prepared for evacuation in case they were breached. The base had buried a large amount of explosives, which were detonated after the citizens evacuated, blowing up all the zombies inside. The fleeing citizens retreated to smaller nearby bases.
The fall of the northern main base also served to ring an alarm bell3 for everyone. An order was issued that anyone on an external mission who discovered a Mother Nest must immediately terminate their mission, return to the base to report it at the first opportunity, and would be duly rewarded.
Chen Zixuan handed the thermos in her hand to Wang Kelin and said, “Hey, how come we’ve only been at the school for a few days, but it feels like we can’t keep up with the sky turning and the earth overturning changes?”
Wang Kelin took the thermos, opened it, and was surprised. “Where did you get milk tea?”
Milk was a luxury item that only children could drink now, let alone milk tea.
“Sisi gave me her milk, so I just added some milk candy and tea leaves and boiled it into milk tea.”
“How could you take Sisi’s milk?” Wang Kelin frowned, closing the thermos lid, intending to give it to Sisi to drink later.
Seeing this, Chen Zixuan helplessly spread her hands and said, “This is a token of Sisi’s feelings. If you don’t drink it, that child will probably try to quietly stuff something else to me.”
“If she stuffs it to you, can’t you just not accept it?” Wang Kelin asked, puzzled.
“You, sometimes you’re just too stubborn. All mortals have a heart that wants to repay kindness and show gratitude. Put yourself in her shoes, what would it feel like to constantly receive favors but not even be able to give away a single bottle of milk?”
After saying this, Chen Zixuan pointed to Sisi, who was jogging not far away. Sisi had been starved by her parents and was slightly thinner and smaller than children her age. She fell behind when she ran, her short legs treading on the snow, looking as if she was struggling greatly. But she still gritted her teeth and kept running with the other children.
It dawned on Wang Kelin. Sisi was too sensible. She had her own pride and knew clearly that she was too young to do anything, so she wanted to use a bottle of milk to thank Wang Kelin and Chen Zixuan for their round-the-clock care, doing what was within her power.
“Drink it. If the milk tea is left to steep for too long, it’ll get a weird taste. Besides, this is a milk tea of love I made for you. Are you willing to give it to someone else?” Chen Zixuan looked at Wang Kelin with aggrieved eyes.
“I didn’t say I wouldn’t drink it.”
Wang Kelin opened the thermos lid and took a small sip. The fragrance of milk and tea filled her nose and taste buds, giving her a serene daze.
She glanced at the expectant Chen Zixuan and said gently, “You have some too, to warm yourself up.”
“Okay!”
Chen Zixuan took the thermos. She glanced at the glistening moisture on the rim and deliberately turned the spot where Wang Kelin had drunk towards herself.
Seeing this, Wang Kelin’s ears turned red and she looked away, marveling inwardly at Chen Zixuan’s thick face-skin, yet feeling a hint of joy, warm and filling her entire heart.
After the children finished their run, they had a short break. The teacher was a burly man, a former soldier. After the break, he began to teach the children military boxing4.
The school in the forbidden zone provided education divided by age groups. Besides the basic knowledge they learned before, physical fitness was also a key area of development.
Moreover, there were doctors on standby to prevent instructors from causing serious injuries to the children through incorrect teaching.
Sisi was an ability user, so her physical fitness was actually much better than that of ordinary people. Unfortunately, because she had been starved for a long time, this advantage had ceased to exist.
She needed to be properly nourished.
“Hey, it’s Wenwen and the others!”
Su Wenwen, Luo Xi, and Lin Wan walked over, each carrying a bag.
Sisi saw the three of them from afar, ran over happily, and threw herself directly into Lin Wan’s arms. Lin Wan put down her bag, picked Sisi up, and said, “You seem a bit fairer. It looks like Sisi has been eating well. Big sister should give Sisi a reward. Look what gift big sister brought for you.”
Hearing this, Sisi quickly jumped down from Lin Wan’s embrace and opened the bag. Inside were three pillows, each with a cartoon avatar of Su Wenwen, Luo Xi, and Lin Wan printed on it.
“Wow, so cute!” Sisi’s little face was flushed. Her small hands couldn’t hold all three pillows; one would always fall out, and she would pick it up again, looking very adorable.
Su Wenwen helped her hold one and smiled, “From now on, whoever Sisi misses, she can just hug that person to sleep.”
“I want all three.”
It was a rare occasion for everyone to gather. They had originally planned to have a meal together, but Sisi still had classes. Su Wenwen handed the ingredients she brought to Wang Kelin, telling her and Chen Zixuan to go back and rest first, and they would all prepare dinner together in the evening.
As Chen Zixuan was leaving, she didn’t forget to be clingy with Wang Kelin for a moment, only to be pushed away by a palm from the latter.
After physical education class, Sisi still had Chinese and Math. The children were quiet in the classroom, occasionally flipping through their books on their own. When the teacher entered the classroom, even the sound of flipping pages disappeared.
Su Wenwen and Luo Xi stood outside the classroom, remarking with emotion, “They are all so well-behaved. Not like me when I was little, I was naughty to death, always talking in class, and got scolded by the teacher many times. I could always escape by just looking at the teacher pitifully.”
“But it’s also possible that I was smart and likable, so the teacher didn’t lower himself to my level…”
Luo Xi stood aside, listening to Su Wenwen talk about her childhood. The faint white light illuminated her gentle gaze, making even the cold white snow all around feel warm.
She looked up at the sky. Thick white clouds covered the blue, but there were far fewer gray clouds. It probably wouldn’t snow heavily in the coming days.
There was a refreshing feeling of the sky clearing after rain.
When Su Wenwen saw Luo Xi leaning against a pillar of the school building, looking at the sky, she had a sense of beauty that had left the world and stood alone5. It was just like the first time she saw her at school; there was always a feeling that the world was separate from her. If it weren’t for discovering the sorrow between her brows, Su Wenwen probably wouldn’t have approached her, only stealing a glance from afar.
“What about you? What were you like when you were little?” Although Ji Qingshuang had told her what Luo Xi was like as a child, Su Wenwen still wanted to hear it from Luo Xi herself.
“When I was little, I thought everyone else was very stupid. The teacher’s lecturing skill was very average. He had to be long-winded and explain one type of problem many times.”
As Su Wenwen listened, she pictured a little kid sitting in the classroom, listening to the teacher with disdain. So arrogant, so cute.
“Since you were so smart, why didn’t you skip a grade?”
“My mom wouldn’t let me. She preferred that I go to school happily and make more friends, rather than proving how amazing I was at studying.”
Speaking of Ji Qingshuang, who knew what she had been up to lately. It was said that several more people had died over at the forbidden zone’s hospital, but the matter was quickly suppressed and didn’t blow up. After all, Lin Wan’s antidote had already been successfully developed and was just waiting for mass production. No one would cause trouble at this bone joint6.
Except for Luo Tianyang, that is.
Just then, Lin Wan’s phone suddenly rang. She glanced down; it was a colleague from the research lab. After answering, she only said “It’s fine” and hung up.
Su Wenwen asked, “What’s wrong?”
“It’s nothing, just that the data for the antidote was stolen, and some of the antibody cells I cultivated were also stolen.”
Su Wenwen was shocked. “Things were stolen, that should be a big deal, right? How can you think it’s fine?”
Lin Wan said, “It really is fine. I’ve memorized all that data, so it doesn’t matter if it’s there or not. I was planning to make the antidote’s formula public anyway. But rewriting the data will take some time. I’ll write it out slowly when I have a moment to spare!”
Su Wenwen and Luo Xi exchanged a look.
Although there were still plenty of finished antidote in Su Wenwen’s spatial backpack, the composition of this kind of antidote was very complex. It was impossible to analyze it in a short amount of time. In other words, only Lin Wan could produce the antidote right now.
First, the deaths in the hospital to distract Ji Qingshuang, then the theft of the antidote research data. You didn’t need to think to know it was Luo Tianyang’s doing.
The next step, presumably, was to kill Lin Wan. As long as the antidote couldn’t be researched in the short term, the deaths in the hospital would become a fuse that would make the people’s hearts flutter with anxiety7. The one to be the first struck by the charge8 would be Ji Qingshuang.
But Lin Wan couldn’t care less about these things and wouldn’t connect the dots at all.
“Sisi is too thin. I need to stew some chicken soup for her tonight,” Lin Wan said seriously.
Seeing that Lin Wan’s mind was entirely focused on Sisi, Su Wenwen thought for a moment and decided it was better to find another opportunity to bring this up with her. At the very least, before Luo Tianyang’s matter was resolved, Lin Wan had to be on guard against others.
In the evening, the group gathered as planned to eat and drink. The happiest one was Sisi, calling out “Wenwen-jie,” “Xixi-jie,” and asking for hugs. Then Chen Zixuan started making trouble, pulling Sisi over to tease her, pinching her cheeks and hands, and saying with a laugh, “My cousin’s child should be about this big… I used to love teasing her like this…”
Mentioning relatives in the apocalypse was always a heavy topic. Sisi had lost her parents, as had Wang Kelin. Chen Zixuan’s relatives were probably all dead too.
In comparison, Su Wenwen was lucky. Her parents were alive and well, and she had even managed to become a minor leader.
Wang Kelin glanced at the smiling Chen Zixuan, and an inexplicable bitterness rose in her heart. She felt that if she had feelings for her, she shouldn’t be so reserved. She wanted to take the initiative to get closer, to understand, to hug the her who was now forcing a smile for appearances.
