The cold-proof suit was in tatters in no time. Su Wenwen’s skin was scalded, and the pain made her quickly roll to the side to avoid the blood webs.
She looked down at the wound on her arm. The black liquid was poisonous, and the toxins spread extremely fast. The health bar on her system panel was dropping continuously by the thousands.
And the poison she was afflicted with was zombie toxin.
To lose health so violently, is this the condensed essence of zombie poison?
Su Wenwen quickly took out a medicinal agent and injected herself with it. The poison receded, the wound healed rapidly, and her skin became fair and tender once more.
She breathed a sigh of relief and looked around. The severed blood webs had not grown back. The team members were trapped in the soil, not daring to poke their heads out.
Su Wenwen put away the iron awl, used her dagger to cut off a small piece of the soft wall, and tossed it in her hand before forcefully throwing it at a blood web.
That piece of soft wall was like a meatball. Everywhere it passed, the blood webs were severed. Because its speed was too fast, it even kicked up a gust of wind, carrying the black liquid with it as it smashed into the soft wall on the opposite side, which was also dented by the impact.
It works!
Su Wenwen cut off several more pieces of the soft wall and, in the same fashion, smashed the blood webs to a pulp. After a good while, the path was finally cleared.
“It’s alright, you can all come out now!”
The soil receded, and the team members revealed their heads. They were somewhat struck speechless by Su Wenwen’s miserable state. Hiding in the soil, they had no idea what had happened, only hearing a series of impacts comparable to the beating of war drums.
Su Wenwen picked up the flashlight from the ground and said, “Be careful where you walk. Avoid the black liquid on the ground.”
“Yes!”
With the blood webs gone, the path was much easier to walk. The light from the team members’ flashlights shone on the dented soft walls; the originally soft and elastic texture had been smashed into mush. They couldn’t help but marvel at Su Wenwen’s immense strength.
After passing through this area, everyone had to squeeze into a narrow passage again, and they could only advance by crawling. The light from their flashlights was also severely obstructed, and the low soft wall overhead made them feel even more oppressed.
The cold-proof suits were covered in foul-smelling mucus. Over time, it formed a thin film over their bodies, and every time they crawled forward, it would pull up thick threads.
Faintly… Su Wenwen smelled the scent of blood. It was very fresh and seemed to carry a hint of the cold fragrance of snow.
She subconsciously thought of Luo Xi, and her heart grew anxious. Her crawling speed instantly increased. In a moment of carelessness, she failed to notice a vertical hole ahead and fell headfirst, sliding down.
“Team Leader Su!”
The team members noticed something was wrong. They shined their flashlights down, but Su Wenwen was already out of sight. The opening was only one meter1 wide; if one crawled carefully, they could avoid going down.
“What do we do? Should we go down?”
Their primary mission was to find the flower stamen; rescue was secondary.
“We’re not sure which path leads to the stamen either. Let’s go down and check the situation first.”
Before descending, the team members also installed an explosive here, then braced their hands and feet against the soft walls and slowly slid down.
This shaft was very deep. They roughly estimated that they had already slid from the third floor to the second basement level’s garage, but they still hadn’t reached the bottom.
They were familiar with the hospital here; the underground garage only had two levels. If they continued to slide down, it meant the mother nest had likely dug a giant hole to hide in.
After a while, the team members saw a beam of light coming from the opening below. They called out in delight, “Team Leader Su, are you okay?”
“I’m fine. Be careful when you come down. This place is full of poisonous barbs.”
Hearing this, the Earth-ability user quickly used his power to control the soil, anchoring everyone and slowly lowering them out of the opening.
Below the opening, a section of the soft wall was covered in sharp thorns dripping with black liquid. If a living person were to accidentally slide down here, even if they didn’t die from the fall, they would be stabbed into a hornet’s nest2 and turn into a zombie.
With lingering fear in their hearts, everyone landed safely. They then surveyed the cavern. It was about ten meters high, with many soft pillars of various sizes supporting the ceiling and floor. The area was vast, and the light from their flashlights was almost swallowed by the darkness.
There were still some bloodstains on the ground, bright red and not yet completely dry. They hesitated, “Is this Team Leader Luo’s blood?”
Su Wenwen said, “It’s possible. Plant some explosives here too. I’m going to check other places.”
“Yes!”
Su Wenwen followed the trail of blood, fumbling her way into the darkness. The bloodstains were just scattered spots, indicating the bleeding wasn’t heavy, and finding the trail took her a considerable amount of time.
She walked further and further, but still saw no end. Occasionally, a viscous substance would drip from the ceiling, like human saliva, and there was a foul smell like that of dried spit.
For some reason, the hairs on Su Wenwen’s arms stood on end. She shone her light upwards, and something flashed past her eyes at an incredible speed.
Then, she felt something crawl past behind her.
Su Wenwen quickly turned to search. She knew in her heart it was zombies, and more than one. But she hadn’t expected these zombies to be so fast that they were difficult to lock onto with the naked eye. Moreover, the current environment was damp, dark, and slippery, which not only made it hard to track the zombies’ movements but also made it difficult for her to dodge.
She was a little worried about the team members behind her. After a moment’s thought, she took out her dagger and cut a slit in her palm. The instant she ran, two zombies leaped towards the bloodstains on the ground with extreme speed, extending their long tongues to lick them.
These two zombies had no foreheads; the space above their eyes was flat. Their four limbs had sharp claws, allowing them to scuttle about tyrannically3 on the soft walls.
No forehead. Where does she need to attack to kill these two zombies?
Just as she was pondering, after licking the blood, the zombies licked their mouths as if wanting more and hissed at Su Wenwen. In the blink of an eye, they vanished.
Su Wenwen was horrified. She ran with all her might. An unusual gust of wind rushed past her ear. She subconsciously ducked and rolled. A zombie leaped over her head and once again disappeared into the darkness.
That was dangerous. I was almost headshotted.
Su Wenwen stood up. Her excessive tension made her breathe rapidly. Despite the cold and damp environment, she felt hot enough to consider taking off her cold-proof suit.
The sounds of the zombies echoed all around.
Su Wenwen took out several more flashlights from her spatial backpack and placed them on the ground, or cut slits in the soft walls to hang them in various corners.
With more light, her field of vision widened considerably. She squinted and caught sight of a zombie in the distance.
The wound on her palm was still bleeding, forming a small puddle at her feet.
The prowling zombies were enticed by the smell of blood and crawled towards Su Wenwen. In just a few seconds, a zombie was right in front of her.
Su Wenwen gripped her iron awl tightly. The moment the zombie pounced, she leaned back in a deft posture, supporting herself with the awl. The zombie leaped past her, and the sharp tip of the awl met its abdomen. Due to inertia, a long gash was cut open, and the black blood and intestines inside spilled out as the zombie landed.
This also allowed Su Wenwen to see the red glow of a crystal core flash in the zombie’s heart area. So, she just needed to attack the heart.
But to Su Wenwen’s surprise, the wound on the zombie’s abdomen healed at a visible rate. Immediately after, a sound came from behind her. Before she could turn around, the sound was already behind her ear, her hair even feeling the touch of a sharp nail…
It’s over, I’m going to be headshotted!
For the first time, Su Wenwen felt her agile body was so stiff. No, it was that the speed of these two zombies was countless times faster than the faceless zombies. With her current agility points, she could barely react to one zombie, but if she faced two or more, she couldn’t react in time.
She felt something sharp pressing against her scalp, and her pores instantly erupted, but her body remained rigid, as if telling her… at such a close distance, there was truly no escape.
“Bang!”
At the moment of a thousand jun hanging by a single hair4, a team member holding a pulse pistol sent the zombie behind Su Wenwen flying. The sound of its bones shattering could be heard as it landed far away, turning into a pile of mush.
“Team Leader Su, are you okay?”
Before the breath caught in her throat could be released, the team member’s head was bitten off right in front of Su Wenwen. Gushing blood sprayed for a good while before his body reacted and fell down stiffly.
Su Wenwen’s pupils contracted. Something emanated from her very bones, making her tremble uncontrollably.
The zombie licked the bright red from between its sharp teeth, dropped the head, and turned its gaze to the others.
And the other zombie that had been on the ground slowly got up, sniffing the blood as it sped over.
Su Wenwen gripped the iron awl in her hand and met the two attacking zombies, shouting to her team members, “All of you, retreat!”
With her current strength, she could only hold them off for a few minutes. The two zombies flashed past her eyes, difficult to capture with the naked eye. She had to rely entirely on sound and instinct to counter and evade.
The Earth-ability user said, “Team Leader Su, we won’t retreat. I’ll find a way to slow them down.”
Soil spread out in all directions, clinging to the surroundings like a spider’s web. As the area grew larger, he became more strained.
Seeing this, Su Wenwen quickly retreated, luring the zombies into the earth web. The zombies’ intelligence was low, and they stuck close to Su Wenwen. The moment they hit the web, their movements clearly stagnated.
Su Wenwen seized the moment, her strike both ruthless and precise, directly piercing the zombie’s heart through and through. The searing heat even scorched the muscles around the heart black.
With one killed, Su Wenwen’s pressure lessened considerably. She continued to fight with the other one, with the Earth-ability user assisting from the side.
She brandished the iron awl so fast it left afterimages, and she could still weave nimbly through the earth web. The zombie chased after her, and was unknowingly led into the center of the web. Then, the soil abruptly constricted, locking the zombie firmly in place. Only after Su Wenwen pierced its heart did it finally stop moving completely.
Su Wenwen panted, not yet daring to relax her guard, fearing that there were more than just two of these zombies.
“Team Leader Su, look over there!” The Earth-ability user shone his flashlight into the distance, where a third zombie was lying.
Su Wenwen led the team members over to check. The zombie was already dead, with a deep wound in its heart.
She and her team members quickly searched the surroundings and found a fourth and a fifth forehead-less zombie.
