Rebirth
Su Wenwen1 would never have thought that something like rebirth would happen to her.
She sat dazedly on the bed, and only after looking at the time on her phone and a text message she had just received did she gradually realize she was still alive.
Just a second ago, she had been bitten to death by zombies. At that moment, her ears were filled with beast-like low roars; flesh was torn off raw, her throat was bitten through, and dripping blood blocked her windpipe, making her unable to utter any sound or draw in any air. Her nasal passages and mouth were thick and sticky, and the smell of blood was everywhere.
This extreme and painful experience was still vivid in her mind, but the most painful thing was personally watching her girlfriend, Helian Yun2, run off, pulling another woman with her.
Leaving her alone to resist the apocalyptic zombies.
Pain, doubt, and anger intertwined in her chest for a moment. She really wanted to convince herself that the situation at the time was too dangerous, and Helian Yun simply hadn’t noticed her. But then she thought, if you truly like someone, how could you not notice these things?
So, since when had Helian Yun stopped loving her?
Su Wenwen couldn’t remember clearly either. It was probably from the apocalypse or from this current message.
It read: (I have to work overtime tonight, don’t wait for me for dinner. Take care of yourself, rest well, and drink more water.)
Su Wenwen had a cold. This message seemed to show concern for her, but above this message, there was another one she herself had sent.
(Feeling unwell, cold has worsened.)
The message was sent at seven in the morning, and it was now seven in the evening. The perfunctory attitude was almost overflowing from the screen.
Her face was filled with a weak and bitter smile. The severe cold gave her a splitting headache, so she got out of bed and, dragging her unsteady steps, went to the living room to get water and take medicine.
Su Wenwen had been sensible since she was young. When she was little, her family was poor, and her parents would get up early in the morning to do farm work. She would make her own breakfast and go to school. Other students wore bright and new clothes, while hers alone were washed until they turned yellowish.
One day, Su Wenwen took a liking to a pink hairpin in an accessory shop. So she saved money every day, one mao3, two mao. She saved for a month, but in the end, she bought pencils instead.
Because she knew that between a hairpin and pencils, pencils were essential for studying. She had always known what she should have and what she shouldn’t.
Therefore, Su Wenwen wouldn’t cling desperately to a relationship that didn’t belong to her. Since she knew Helian Yun had someone else in her heart, she chose to step aside and let them be.
After taking her cold medicine, Su Wenwen dialed her parents’ phone number. When it connected, listening to the aged voice coming from the phone, she was slightly dazed and called out, “Dad.”
“I warned you before, if you don’t break up with her, don’t even call back if you die outside.”
“I plan to break up.”
Running away from home for love, this was the only insensible thing Su Wenwen had ever done. She struggled alone in a strange city for several years. After the apocalypse broke out, she also struggled to survive alone, living in a muddle4, not knowing where her next meal would come from5.
Clearly, just a second ago she was being gnawed by zombies, but now, her only memory of the apocalypse was exhaustion; being alive was truly so, so tiring.
But even so, she still wanted to live, to live on with her parents. She was afraid her father wouldn’t believe what she said, so she explained into the phone for a long time, but she didn’t mention the apocalypse.
Her relationship with Helian Yun had long since developed cracks; it was just that she had never thought in that direction.
If it weren’t for the rebirth, if it weren’t for coincidentally encountering that woman…
She didn’t know when that woman had been planted in Helian Yun’s heart, leaving her caught off guard6 and utterly defeated7.
Perhaps her father believed her words; over the phone, his voice softened slightly: “It’s good that you broke up.”
“Dad, tomorrow morning, can you go to the supermarket and buy some more food to stock up at home?” Su Wenwen said tactfully.
“Buy what? Your mom and I don’t usually eat much. The vegetables from the field are enough for us. You wait, your mom has something to say…”
Mother Su took the phone and said eagerly, “Nannan8, since you’ve decided to break up, when are you coming home ah?”
Su Wenwen looked down at the time on her phone. It was impossible to book a ticket for tonight. Because her parents lived in a village, planes couldn’t fly there. She could only fly to a nearby city and then transfer, which would take at least half a day.
If everything went smoothly, she could be home by the morning after tomorrow.
Su Wenwen couldn’t guarantee it, so she could only be vague: “In the next few days ba. I’ll come back after I break up. Mom, you know I usually love snacks. Tomorrow, can you go to the supermarket and buy some more for me to keep at home? And also prepare some more local specialty dried goods for me, okay?”
“Ai, okay, I’ll buy them all for you. How have you been in the city lately? Is work going smoothly? Is your boss male or female? I often see news online about male bosses getting handsy9 with female subordinates. Have you been bullied…”
Listening to her mother’s concerned words, Su Wenwen felt a pang of bitterness in her heart. She covered her mouth, not letting herself make any unusual sounds. But how could her perceptive mother not hear it? She only heard her mother say, “Nannan, did you catch a cold ah? Doesn’t your girlfriend take care of you ma?”
Su Wenwen clenched her phone and said, “I don’t need her to take care of me. I’m fine, it’s just a small cold. It’s very late now, I’m going to sleep. Remember to go to the supermarket tomorrow to buy food for me.”
“Ai, then remember to drink more water.”
After hanging up the phone, Su Wenwen sent a message to her company, asking for three days off. Then, after thinking for a moment, she sent another message to her best friend.
Her best friend usually had a habit of hoarding goods and had a lot of food stocked at home. Su Wenwen was worried her best friend would refuse, so she found an excuse to ask her best friend to accompany her to the supermarket.
Her best friend and Su Wenwen met at the company. Usually, her best friend wouldn’t come here because Su Wenwen had specifically told her that Helian Yun didn’t like having people over. Thinking about it now, I paid for the rent of this house, so why on earth can’t I bring my best friend over as a guest?
A sigh echoed in the silent room. Su Wenwen looked down at her best friend’s affirmative reply. Only then, enduring her headache, did she lie on the bed and use her phone to note down the things to buy tomorrow. Then she checked her balance and found it was less than three thousand.
She had almost forgotten that Helian Yun had taken out loans to buy a house and a car. Every time she was short of money, she would come to her, and then slip away after getting the money. After graduating and working for a few years, most of the money Su Wenwen earned was spent on Helian Yun.
Only a small portion subsidized her family.
What to do? Without money, I can’t buy many supplies. Because her credit rating was low, getting another loan was impossible. She had originally thought of asking her parents for some, but she had just spent a long time explaining the breakup. If I suddenly ask for money, how would I even begin to explain it?
Calculating it, she had spent at least over forty wan10 on Helian Yun. Since she had decided to break up, it would be better to get this money back to save some time.
Su Wenwen thought for a moment, her fingertips tapping rapidly on the phone screen. She typed a string of words, deleted and rewrote them, and when she felt it was about right, she hit send.
This time, Helian Yun saw the message and replied quickly.
(Baby, did I do something wrong? Why bring up breaking up so suddenly?)
Su Wenwen was afraid she couldn’t explain clearly, so she dialed the number directly. But it was quickly disconnected. Her heart felt a little cold. For something as important as a breakup, the other party wasn’t even willing to answer the phone, just asked via text.
She typed another string of words, with no hint of complaint between the lines. She just wanted to break up peacefully and have Helian Yun pay back the money she had borrowed from her.
(Baby, don’t mess around.)
Su Wenwen frowned; the way things were developing was a bit different from what she had expected. So she sent a question mark.
(I’m working overtime right now, let’s talk about this later. You rest well, don’t let your thoughts run wild.)
What’s going on? Helian Yun isn’t mentioning the money at all. Does she not want to pay it back?
In Su Wenwen’s impression, when Helian Yun was young, her family was very wealthy. Later, the company fell on hard times and went bankrupt. But a starved camel is still bigger than a horse11. She wouldn’t go so far as to owe this little money and not pay it back, would she ba?
Su Wenwen clenched her phone; the more she thought, the less confident she felt. Right now, not a single minute or second could be wasted; she had to raise money as quickly as possible.
Helian Yun bought the house and car to better match her current job. She never allowed Su Wenwen to go to her company to find her, and she would never mention Su Wenwen’s name in front of her colleagues.
Su Wenwen quickly sent a message saying she would go to the company tomorrow to ask for the money. Helian Yun’s attitude changed subtly again.
(If you come to the company to find me, I can’t gather forty wan that quickly. Don’t be anxious, I’ll come find you tomorrow.)
Su Wenwen breathed a sigh of relief and replied with a “Okay”. Her head hurt too much, and her vision was a bit blurry. She could only put down her phone and hide under the covers. Presumably, Helian Yun would have a sleepless night tonight. However, Helian Yun was already “working overtime” and staying up late, so it didn’t matter if she slept or not.
Lying on the small, soft, clean bed, Su Wenwen felt as if a lifetime had passed12. She tossed and turned until the latter half of the night before drifting off into a dazed sleep, but she slept very restlessly.
She had a nightmare.
She repeatedly dreamed of Helian Yun’s indifferent gaze, but when she saw the woman fleeing outside the window, her gaze became as gentle as water.
After that, Helian Yun, in order to save that woman, recklessly ran out. Su Wenwen could only follow. But the streets were filled with infected zombies in all directions13. Everywhere were rotten, distorted faces and roars. Even if she saved the woman, there was no way to escape.
Su Wenwen could only use her delicate body to block the infected, and then be torn and bitten.
Although it wouldn’t hurt in the dream, the process of vividly watching the flesh on her own body being stripped away bit by bit, becoming ugly and unbearable, was also quite terrifying and horrifying.
Perhaps her will to survive was too strong.
There would always be a small gap left for Su Wenwen to escape. Every time Su Wenwen took a step, her other foot couldn’t move at all. Then she would be pulled back again, in an infinite loop like this…
