Do You Care?
She’s Just Taking Revenge on You
Shen Man drove Lin Shu to the hospital at top speed.
The car came to a steady stop. Lin Shu, her fingers tightly gripping the seatbelt, took a deep breath and said, “I’ll go up alone.”
Shen Man paused in the middle of unbuckling her seatbelt.
Meeting Lin Shu’s insistent gaze, she gave a faint smile. “Okay, call me if anything happens.”
Lin Shu nodded and opened the car door; a gust of cold wind hit her face.
She pursed her lips and walked inside with a solemn expression.
The light above the operating room door was red.
Lin Shu stood at the corner of the corridor, staring at that splash of red, feeling it sting her eyes.
She turned her head slightly to look at the pristine white wall beside her.
Feng Na was standing in the corridor, looking anxious and constantly peering inside.
Lin Jun was sitting on the resting bench, head down, playing on his phone.
“Xiao Jun, stop playing on your phone. If your dad has a haodai1, what should we do?” Feng Na said in a panic, her high heels making loud dada2 sounds on the floor.
Hearing this, Lin Jun didn’t even lift his head as he said, “If he dies, the inheritance will be all mine.”
There wasn’t a shred of worry in his voice; instead, it revealed a bit of happiness.
Listening to their conversation, Lin Shu’s eyes turned cold.
She strode over and said disdainfully, “When did my Lin family’s property become a Little Three’s3 turn to inherit?”
She finished speaking and looked at the two of them, her eyes filled with contempt.
“Xiao Jun is your father’s only son; only he has the qualification to inherit the company.” Feng Na shouted, her voice nearly cracking, speaking more and more agitatedly, her expression becoming arrogant.
Lin Shu sneered, “Your ambition is truly vast. Being the Madam of the Lin Group wasn’t enough; you actually have the delusion of inheriting our Lin family’s property. Truly shameless.”
Feng Na’s face turned iron-green4 from the mockery.
After a few seconds of silence, she slowly began to smile and said in a strange, affected tone, “If people find out the Lin family’s Eldest Miss is an anomaly5 who likes women, how do you think the people at the company will look at you?”
“What, you want to use that to threaten me?” Lin Shu’s eyes went cold, her whole body radiating a chilling aura.
Feng Na was momentarily scared, but after glancing at Lin Jun beside her, she suddenly regained her confidence.
Looking fearlessly at Lin Shu, she mocked, “I heard you’re keeping a woman in your room named Shen Man, right?”
“Old Man Lin can keep a mistress and raise a private-born son6, so isn’t it perfectly normal for me to keep a lover?” Lin Shu retorted, a mocking smile appearing on her face.
Hearing the term “private-born son,” Lin Jun smashed his phone.
He stood up, staring ferociously at Lin Shu.
Lin Shu wasn’t afraid in the least.
Arms crossed against her chest, leaning against the wall, her expression remained contemptuous. “Even if your mom used tricks to marry into my Lin family, it doesn’t change the fact that you are a private-born son.”
“You…” Lin Jun looked murderous, his fists clenched tight, looking like he would strike at any moment.
Feng Na, afraid of causing trouble, hurriedly stopped him. “Xiao Jun, she’s still your Jiejie7 no matter what. Don’t bicker with her. Anyway, your dad loves you the most; he will definitely hand the company to you in the end.”
By the end of her sentence, her smile grew increasingly triumphant.
“It seems you don’t care about Old Man Lin’s life or death, only about our Lin family assets,” Lin Shu sneered, a look of scorn in her eyes.
Feng Na’s smile froze, twisted for a moment, then she hypocritically said, “Of course I care about my husband.”
She deliberately emphasized the word “husband.”
Lin Shu listened, fire burning in her heart.
She secretly gritted her teeth, suppressing the rising anger.
“If not for you having no respect for elders and running back to make a big scene, how would your dad have had a sudden heart infarction?” Feng Na changed the subject and started accusing Lin Shu. “It’s bad enough you’re not clear not clear8 with women, but you had to go and anger your dad. Is this how a daughter acts?”
“If he has a three long two short9, the culprit is you!”
“My dad’s life is hard10; tell your son to save it11 on wanting to be the President of the Lin Clan.”
After speaking, she looked at the red light and said no more.
Feng Na, seeing Lin Shu wasn’t provoked, looked increasingly embarrassed.
She looked at Lin Jun and said, “Xiao Jun, when your dad comes out later, you must be the first to welcome him. Your dad likes you best; the first person he wants to see when he wakes up is definitely you.”
“Got it,” Lin Jun answered impatiently, sitting down to continue playing on his phone.
Lin Shu snorted disdainfully and secretly took a few photos with her phone.
She turned her head and saw a familiar figure walking over.
Surprised for a moment, she said in a low voice, “Didn’t I tell you to wait downstairs? Why did you come up?”
“Chairman Lin had an accident; by emotion and reason12, I should come take a look,” Shen Man said. Her gaze landed on Feng Na, and she greeted her politely, “Mrs. Lin.”
Her gaze shifted, and seeing Lin Jun, she said, “This must be your noble son13.”
“You’re Shen Man, right? Haven’t seen you in a few years, you’ve gotten prettier,” Feng Na said, offering polite pleasantries, though her expression couldn’t hide her arrogance.
“Yes, I am the lover Miss Lin is raising14 outside,” Shen Man said with a gentle smile.
Hearing this, Lin Shu froze in astonishment and couldn’t help but ask, “When did you get here?”
“Just now,” Shen Man answered with a smile, her eyes deepening.
Lin Shu didn’t believe that.
Meeting that sharp gaze, her heart tightened involuntarily, and she subconsciously turned her head to avoid it.
Shen Man chuckled lightly and walked to Lin Shu’s side.
She leaned in intimately, took Lin Shu’s hand, and said softly, “How is Chairman Lin’s condition?”
Lin Shu, smelling the clear fragrance so close at hand, felt her small face turn slightly red.
Her fingertips trembled uncontrollably, seeming to want to break free.
Shen Man noticed this movement and immediately gripped tighter.
Looking at Feng Na with a smile, her voice revealed a chill, “With Mrs. Lin caring for him day and night, Chairman Lin still had an accident. If we really talk about responsibility, I’m afraid Mrs. Lin is the one who finds it hard to escape the blame15.”
“What nonsense are you spouting?” Feng Na panicked inside and shouted loudly.
Realizing she had lost her composure amidst Shen Man’s smiling face, she hurriedly lowered her voice and said arrogantly, “This is our Lin family’s business; it has nothing to do with an outsider like you.”
“So Mrs. Lin also understands the principle that outsiders shouldn’t interfere in other people’s family affairs? Then why were you willing to bear the name of a Little Three to entangle yourself with Chairman Lin back then?” Shen Man spoke unhurriedly.
The smile on her face was like bathing in a spring breeze16, but the words she spoke were barbed, striking straight at the vital points.
Feng Na choked instantly, her face turning alternating shades of green and white17.
She wanted to retort but didn’t know what to say, trembling all over with rage.
Seeing this, Lin Shu’s mood improved, and she couldn’t help curling her lips.
She inadvertently turned to meet a doting gaze, and her heart skipped a beat.
“Don’t get cocky. Lin Shu is just playing with you to get revenge for your betrayal all those years ago. You definitely shouldn’t take it seriously, lest you get played,” Feng Na warned sarcastically, her tone at the end full of anticipation for a show.
Hearing this, the smile on Shen Man’s face didn’t change, but her fingers gripped tighter.
Lin Shu felt a bit of pain.
Frowning, she struggled slightly. “Let go of me.”
Shen Man stuffed her ears and didn’t hear18, her eyes staring tightly at that red light.
She didn’t let go until the operating room light turned from red to green.
Doctors and nurses pushed a gurney out.
Lin Shu rushed forward, her words unconsciously carrying concern and anxiety, “How is my dad?”
Just as she finished speaking, Feng Na immediately threw herself next to the gurney, crying as if her heart was broken wishing to die.
The nurses hurriedly stopped her to console her.
“The surgery went very smoothly, but Chairman Lin needs quiet rest. He shouldn’t get too emotional,” the doctor said.
“Thank you, doctor.” Lin Shu breathed a sigh of relief and followed them into the ward.
Shen Man followed behind, her pace leisurely.
There was a faint smile on her face, but her eyes were cold.
Lin Shu stood before the hospital bed. Watching Lin Huai wake up, she couldn’t help feeling a surge of joy.
She was just about to speak when she saw the disappointment in Lin Huai’s eyes. Her heart instantly went cold, and she said coldly, “Since you’re fine, it seems you don’t need me here.”
Lin Huai couldn’t speak temporarily and slowly closed his eyes.
Seeing this, Feng Na pulled Lin Jun to kneel by the bed, crying and sobbing, “Honey, it’s so good that you’re okay.”
“Dad, Mom and I were so worried about you. Now seeing you come out of the operating room safe and sound, we finally don’t have to have gall bladders trembling and hearts startled19,” Lin Jun said with a look of lingering fear.
Hearing this, a gratified expression appeared in Lin Huai’s eyes.
He struggled to raise his hand and gently patted the back of Lin Jun’s hand.
Watching this scene, Lin Shu felt abnormally calm.
All the anger and dissatisfaction didn’t even have time to breed in her heart before turning into endless disappointment.
She silently turned around and walked out of the ward.
Shen Man was standing outside.
Seeing the little face come out looking like she lost her soul and dropped her spirit20, a wave of heartache instantly washed over her. Softening her voice, she said, “Chairman Lin is okay now, you don’t need to worry.”
“En21.” Lin Shu stared blankly ahead, giving a seemingly unconscious response.
The two got into the car.
Lin Shu looked at the pitch-black sky outside and suddenly started laughing.
Shen Man panicked inside, hurriedly grabbing one of Lin Shu’s hands, asking with concern, “Shushu, what’s wrong?”
“I’m fine.” Lin Shu stopped laughing, the light in her eyes instantly dimming.
She hung her head, hugging Shen Man tightly with both hands.
Soon, muffled, aggrieved sobbing sounded within the quiet car cabin.
Shen Man felt hot tears wetting her clothes, scalding her skin through the thin fabric.
“I knew it all along. They are the family; I’m just an outsider…” Lin Shu cried softly, tears falling continuously. “But he is actually so cruel. He only has eyes for that son of his; he doesn’t care about me, his daughter, at all…”
“Shushu, don’t be sad. In this world…” Shen Man comforted softly, pausing there before slowing down to continue, “Someone will care about you.”
“I don’t need it!” Lin Shu retorted stubbornly, suddenly sitting up.
She wiped her tears, her expression becoming cold and serious again, as if the person crying just now wasn’t her.
Shen Man looked at the slightly red eyes in the rearview mirror, laughed, and asked back, “Do you really not care?”
Lin Shu pursed her lips and didn’t speak.
Shen Man started the car, tapping her fingers on the steering wheel, and said playfully, “If Miss Lin had a girlfriend, I think she would definitely care about you very much.”
“Pity, I am just Miss Lin’s lover.” She deliberately emphasized the tone of the last two words.
“Since you are clear about your status, you should know what things you shouldn’t do.” Lin Shu clasped her hands tightly together.
Her heart was beating very fast there; she deliberately ignored it, putting on a look of indifference.
Shen Man smiled and looked straight ahead.
Speaking slowly, she said, “Is what Feng Na said true?”
Lin Shu’s heart tightened. Pretending to be indifferent, she asked back, “You believe what she says?”
Shen Man laughed and said nothing.
On the way back, neither of them spoke.
Once inside the house, Lin Shu went back to her own room.
Shen Man sat in the living room, that sentence Lin Shu said constantly surfacing in her mind.
She was just a lover Lin Shu kept…
Shen Man’s eyes gradually darkened.
She had long guessed Lin Shu’s purpose for returning to the country, but hearing it actually spoken from that little red mouth, she still couldn’t stop the anger surging in her heart.
A cold wind blew in from the balcony.
Shen Man stood up, reaching out to tuck back a strand of hair blown messy by the wind.
Looking at the deep night outside, a smile revealed itself at the corner of her lips.
