Ha, Karma! – Chapter 70

The Mere Path of Reincarnation, She Scorns It.

Liu Guohui was scared out of his house, running around everywhere like a headless fly1.

The dazzling sunlight and the pedestrians coming and going enveloped him. The noisy sounds gradually slowed his hurried footsteps, and his fearful heart was soothed.

Weird, truly too weird!2

That house really wasn’t clean. He couldn’t go back today; maybe that female ghost was still there!

Thinking about what happened that night, his heart still pounded with fear, as if something was still following behind him.

The thought alone made his skin crawl, like facing a formidable enemy. He suddenly turned and walked in another direction.

Ah Li, hidden in the shadows, saw this and had no choice but to follow.

He followed Liu Guohui through winding twists and turns3, watched him get into a car, and travel many roads he didn’t usually take.

Along the way, Liu Guohui kept looking back, his vigilance heightened, adding considerable difficulty to Ah Li’s tracking.

Finally, they even went up a mountain.

Liu Guohui walked into a temple.

Quiet and serene, the tolling bells solemn, the thick scent of incense permeated every corner of the temple, calming the mind.

Sacred Buddhist ground4, where evil dares not intrude.

Liu Guohui entered the main hall, knelt on a meditation cushion5, and kowtowed with immense piety to the various Buddhas and deities, praying for blessing and protection.

Ah Li watched from outside.

He hid behind a pillar, his line of sight just able to see Liu Guohui kowtowing.

At this moment, a voice came through his earpiece.

“How’s the situation on your end?” It was Chu Zhaoqiu’s voice.

“Nothing’s happening. Liu Guohui is praying to Buddhas and gods,” Ah Li glanced over again, “Maybe praying for better luck today?”

“Praying to Buddhas and gods…” Chu Zhaoqiu repeated softly.

“Right, Young Miss,” Ah Li reported Liu Guohui’s unusual behavior today to Chu Zhaoqiu, “He seems highly vigilant today, constantly looking back over his shoulder.”

The person on the phone fell silent for a moment, then a very calm voice came through: “Then you rest for a while first. Let him go ahead; no need to follow too closely or urgently.”

Ah Li didn’t question it, accepting the order: “Understood.”

After praying, Liu Guohui also donated some incense money6, giving without hesitation.

He sat in the temple for a while.

Whether it was psychological or the sense of security the temple provided, he was no longer afraid, nor did he feel like something was following him.

He decided to keep sitting; he had nothing else to do anyway.

He’d had really bad luck recently.

His gambling dens had been reported to the police by some scumbag and shut down. If he hadn’t run fast enough, he would have spent a few days in the clink—and more than one den was shut down!

And just now, he encountered that bizarre incident of a ghost knocking at the door… F%cking weird, maybe ghosts really do exist in this world!

Thinking this, he settled his butt more firmly.

An hour later, his butt started itching; he couldn’t sit still anymore.

He’d been sitting here for ages, bathed in so much incense smoke, and donated money too. Surely Heaven would bless him now, right?

Then he should get going. Just sitting here was too dull and boring. His throat was starting to itch; he wanted a taste of alcohol.

Better to act than just think about it7. He immediately stood up and walked out.

Ah Li had waited over an hour and finally saw Liu Guohui move.

He immediately followed.

Liu Guohui headed down the mountain. As he was walking, he suddenly turned back!

Ah Li quickly dodged aside, avoiding exposure.

Liu Guohui looked left and right, found no suspicious figures, and only then completely dispelled his doubts and went down the mountain.

Ah Li hid behind a tree, silently observing him. Recalling Chu Zhaoqiu’s words, he concealed himself in an unnoticed spot to rest, then released the Little Heaven Eye, letting it follow Liu Guohui for a while.

Anyway, in broad daylight, Fingerless Madam wouldn’t risk her soul scattering to come out and kill Liu Guohui, right?

The light butterfly fluttered its wings and flew high, quietly following Liu Guohui, sometimes far, sometimes near, finally landing gently on a shop sign.

Liu Guohui was sitting in a small restaurant opposite, ordering alcohol and side dishes.

Loafing around, leisurely and carefree.

Cup after cup, Liu Guohui drank until he was dead drunk, without any regard for his image.

His throat felt better, his stomach felt better, and only then did he stumble outside.

The Little Heaven Eye transmitted his every move to Ah Li.

Ah Li: “…”

Getting blind drunk in broad daylight, incomprehensible…

He contemptuously controlled the Little Heaven Eye to continue following Liu Guohui.

He watched Liu Guohui drunkenly walk forward, seemingly without a destination, just wandering aimlessly.

As he walked, the people around grew fewer and fewer.

He saw Liu Guohui arrive beside a deserted river channel, raising a hand to support himself on the wood-plastic composite railing as he slowly walked forward.

Not far ahead was a large tree, and beneath it, a bench shaded by its leaves.

He thought: Liu Guohui probably wants to lie down there and sleep.

The Little Heaven Eye continued to slowly flap its wings.

The sky was clear, the wind gentle, clouds rolled and unfurled, all was calm.

Just then, an unknown wave of heat suddenly rushed towards the Little Heaven Eye!

The butterfly’s fragile wings were scorched, turning to ash and smoke in an instant!

—The feed was completely lost.

Ah Li flinched back instinctively as if burned, then abruptly sat up, eyes wide open.

In the final moment before the Little Heaven Eye was destroyed, he had seen it—the red clothes under the tree!

Liu Guohui supported himself on the wood-plastic railing, walking towards the wooden bench.

Somehow, the path under his feet suddenly seemed to become very, very long, making him very, very tired as he walked.

No, he had to rest.

Leaning against the railing, which was in disrepair from age8, he burped, reeking of alcohol, completely unconcerned.

In his daze, he saw a person standing under the tree not far away.

That person was wearing… red clothes!

Realizing this, his eyes shot wide open, but he heard a cracking sound by his ear—crack, wood splinters flew, the railing broke.

With a look of astonishment, Liu Guohui fell outwards, tumbling straight down the riverbank slope!

As he tumbled, he hastily glimpsed a protruding foreign object. Before he could react to what it was, his face had already slammed into it, ssshhk—tearing open a large, bloody gash. Finally, with a plop, he fell into the river.

The river water suddenly became very cold, as cold as water in deep winter.

The wound on Liu Guohui’s face throbbed with the cold, clearing his consciousness somewhat.

He opened his eyes; strands of blood drifted past his vision. He instinctively swam towards the surface.

He couldn’t die, he didn’t want to die, he had to find a doctor…

But just then, something suddenly entangled his foot, thin and long. He couldn’t help but look down—

It was hair.

More and more hair.

And a gradually clearing face, deathly pale, filled with hatred.

That face suddenly lunged towards him, lips curling upwards into a twisted, morbid arc.

“You still have to die by my hand—your karma has come!”

The ethereal red clothes moved like a fish back in water9, turning and dragging him deeper towards the river bottom.

The river bottom was pitch-black and boundless, like an abyss, like the giant maw of a monstrous fish, gloomy and terrifying.

Liu Guohui’s eyes widened in terror as he struggled and resisted.

He wanted to open his mouth to question, to beg for mercy, but all he got was river water rushing into his mouth, unable even to make a sound.

The next second, he saw two things like lightbulbs suddenly appear.

Followed by two rows, top and bottom, of dense things like hammers.

He blinked again, and a huge, ugly abyss monster fish appeared before him, slowly opening its terrifying, blood-red giant mouth towards him.

No, no—Help!!!

He frantically opened his mouth, every bubble rising upwards carrying his cry for help.

But the more he struggled, the tighter the restraint on his foot became, almost about to sever his foot.

Puchi—

Sharp teeth pierced his waist without hesitation, blood instantly blooming outwards.

He screamed in pain, and the next second, his eyes snapped open!

A searing pain lingered on his waist, but there was no monster fish before him, nor was his waist bitten open—it was an illusion!

He looked down at his foot again.

The hair was still there… This wasn’t an illusion!

He abruptly looked towards the figure in red, only to see her floating nearby, slowly curling her lips: “Ending it too soon would be letting you off too easily.

“Your second karma begins now.”

As soon as Fingerless Madam finished speaking, Liu Guohui saw countless sinister black snakes pour out en masse10 from behind her, densely converging towards him.

His eyes widened again as he flailed his legs powerlessly, trying to flee in panic.

But he was like locked in place, unable to escape, unable to cry out, unable even to die as he wished.

He watched helplessly as those snakes bit him.

They tore at his face, gnawed his flesh and blood, bit off his fingers one by one, swallowing them down.

The pain was dense and real, hurting him so much he struggled madly, almost fainting, until blood blurred his vision. He opened his eyes again—another illusion.

He looked at Fingerless Madam in terror.

He saw her smile faintly: “The third karma begins now.”

As her words fell, he suddenly felt the world spinning11. He blinked again, and he was already in another scene.

—At a gambling table.

Having just emerged from the suffocating confinement underwater, he hadn’t yet come back to his senses.

Just then, a hand reached out from behind, roughly slamming his head hard onto the gambling table.

Dice and wooden tiles scattered before his eyes. The room’s lighting was dim; he saw several men dressed in ancient costumes with fierce expressions, each holding a knife.

A knife gleaming with cold light gently patted his cheek.

He instantly felt terrified, his legs starting to tremble uncontrollably.

A voice floated down lightly from above, asking him: “Still gambling?”

He was horrified, shaking his head repeatedly: “No more gambling, no more gambling!”

The man chuckled humorlessly, asking: “Not gambling now? Then how will you repay the money you owe?”

His mind was blank, only his mouth still moved: “I’ll pay, I’ll pay, I’ll use my… I’ll use…”

“Hm? Can’t think of anything, can you?”

He saw the man abruptly raise the knife in his hand: “Then pay with your life—!”

“No, no—!!!”

He could finally make a sound, but no one could hear him anymore.

By the time Chu Zhaoqiu and Ye Linlin arrived at the riverside with people, Liu Guohui had already become a corpse.

He floated on the river surface, drifting with the current. There was still a hideous wound on his face, as if someone disliked this face and had viciously torn it apart.

Other than his face, there were no other wounds.

Chu Zhaoqiu immediately ordered the Chu Family Disciples to set up a controlling formation12 nearby, concealing their forms and movements, while also watching for any innocent people approaching the area.

She turned her head to look at Fingerless Madam.

The red figure stood under the tree shade, calmly gazing at Liu Guohui in the river.

Hearing footsteps, she slowly turned around, her eyes meeting Chu Zhaoqiu’s.

They were still too late; she had still acted.

She looked at Chu Zhaoqiu, the mocking words “You were negligent” rising to her lips.

She opened her mouth, seemed to understand something in an instant, curiously glanced at Chu Zhaoqiu twice, and swallowed the words back down, only saying: “Look, his karma.”

Alcoholism, domestic violence, gambling, making his wife and daughter suffer endlessly—he deserved heavenly punishment!

Liu Guohui, this face she hated the most, was finally gone. It was immensely satisfying13!

She also knew the Demon Hunters wouldn’t let her go.

In the hearts of Demon Hunters, she had killed many people with whom she had no prior grievance or enmity. They feared she would threaten others; she was an evil spirit that could not be allowed to exist in the world, one that must be eliminated on sight.

But she didn’t care.

The mere Path of Reincarnation, she scorned it.

She calmly stepped forward, walking towards the scorching sunlight.

Rather than let them do it, she might as well go first herself.

Just then, a swift wind swept past, and a binding force wrapped around her waist again—a very familiar feeling, exactly the same as the day she fought Chu Zhaoqiu.

Back then, Chu Zhaoqiu was trying to stop her from killing Liu Guohui.

But this time, Chu Zhaoqiu was actually trying to stop her from self-destructing.

She turned to look at the young Demon Hunter, finding she really couldn’t see through her.

“What’s wrong, don’t you want to kill me?”

Chu Zhaoqiu held the horsetail whisk in her right hand, suppressing the pain in her arm, her expression calm as she said: “No need to rush off. You haven’t finished what you promised me.”

“What did I promise you?”

“After he died, you would tell me why you absolutely had to kill him.”

“Oh…”

Fingerless Madam suddenly understood: “You still remembered.”

“I always remembered,” Chu Zhaoqiu took out the White Pure Bottle, “I hope Fingerless Madam won’t go back on her word14.”

Fingerless Madam glanced back at Liu Guohui in the river, then turned back to Chu Zhaoqiu, suddenly smiling magnanimously: “It’s a dead end either way. Going a bit slower makes no difference.”

She turned and flew into the bottle.

Chu Zhaoqiu lowered her gaze to the White Pure Bottle in her hand, then looked at the damaged wood-plastic railing and Liu Guohui in the river, finally raising her head to look at the sky.

Today’s sun was very blinding, like the eyes of a god watching the earth, silently.
