Plan A
Divine Vestige 18
Su Xin followed Slayer’s lead, her dagger being placed back with Fourteen. Slayer paid no mind to this small detail. She didn’t care where Su Xin’s dagger came from or how it vanished; all she cared about was Su Xin’s response to her kiss.
Slayer laid Su Xin down on the mermaid’s bed. The King’s bed was beautiful and spacious, shaped like a seashell and adorned with pearls.
The bed was also incredibly soft, much like the sensation of Slayer’s fingers sinking into Su Xin’s skin.
Su Xin wrapped her arms around Slayer, showing her what to do.
Perhaps the atmosphere was just right. Although Su Xin found Slayer’s fishtail a bit inconvenient, touching it was a unique sensation all its own.
Slayer was a fast learner, picking up everything instantly and even extrapolating from there.
Su Xin was feeling languid, and in the end, she began to tease Slayer.
That beautiful fishtail lay there obediently, its scales disappearing at her waist and abdomen.
Su Xin found the mermaid’s anatomy fascinating and began to observe it meticulously, from the outside in.
It was a beauty that transcended species and gender. Merfolk were the fierce beasts of the seabed; they had great stamina and wouldn’t become frail and weak from certain activities.
Slayer, spurred on by Su Xin’s actions, only grew more excited.
The enchanting singing stopped, and the merfolk outside gradually began to disperse.
They returned to their original spots, discussing the music they had just heard.
“I swear that was the most beautiful song I’ve ever heard. Who do you think the King was singing for?”
The other merfolk were also guessing, but they all knew it wasn’t for the King Consort.
The King Consort had been outside eating with them at the time, so it was impossible for the King to be in the palace singing that song to him.
“I remember that inside the King’s palace, the only one there is that food she brought back, right?”
“Yeah, you don’t think… the King was singing to her food?”
“How is that possible? Would you sing that kind of song to those fish?”
A merman rolled his eyes. She’d have to be crazy.
“Whatever, let’s keep eating. We’ll find out eventually.”
The seawater was a deep, profound blue, and the world was dotted with coral reefs.
Su Xin had been feeling a bit drained, but this was a game, after all, and you could replenish your energy. Su Xin pulled up the control panel, used a potion, and restored her energy to its maximum value. She immediately felt refreshed and invigorated.
“Let’s go.”
“Mm.”
Slayer wrapped her arms around Su Xin and swam toward another area.
Su Xin could get ashore by herself, and Slayer would be able to manifest a physical body to meet her.
The merfolk discovered that the food the King had taken back to her palace was gone. Everyone guessed that the King probably had a large appetite and had eaten it all, not even leaving a single trace behind.
Aside from the King Consort, who was still dwelling on who that song was for, the seabed was as calm as ever.
It was silent, as if nothing had ever happened.
Of course, Su Xin couldn’t surface at the same place she went down, or she’d be hounded with questions by that group of people. It would be too much trouble.
She went ashore on the other side. Slayer knew where she was and appeared before her in an instant.
“Let’s go. I’ll change first, then we’ll go find them.”
“I’ve already notified them to wait for us here.”
“That’s good.”
Seven were now down to five. Su Xin and Slayer discussed their previous plan and decided to head to the Beastkin territory.
They spent a relatively long time on the road. The territories of the various races were scattered across the continent. Due to the grudges, hatred, and exclusion between the races, it was impossible for them to live together, so each race resided in a place they liked or that suited them.
Su Xin wished she could reach her destination in the next second to avoid wasting time, but the map hadn’t been repaired yet.
Su Xin had communicated with Lang Ning, who was working hard on it. He was busy maintaining the Inventory System, as its restoration was causing constant bug attacks.
Restoring the Map System would probably be difficult, about as hard as restoring the control panel.
Lang Ning said their situation over there had basically stabilized. The Hunters’ teams had not continued to grow, and quite a few had even switched sides.
If people had a conscience, they would feel guilt for the wrong choices they’ve made.
Fortunately, it seemed that most people did.
Only a small number, who either felt their actions were irreversible or for other reasons, were still trying to cause trouble. Lang Ning was busy and didn’t have time to deal with them right now.
The place where the Beastkin lived was beyond a vast desert, a place where few people ever set foot.
If one were to describe the Beastkin, the words would likely be “primitive” and “rugged.”
They existed in semi-humanoid forms, though the powerful ones could sometimes transform into the shape of a beast.
Their reproductive ability was strong, no less than that of humans, giving them an advantage over other races. But they existed like a tribe, far from the expansive reach of humanity, which could spread its footprint to any place they had ever reached.
Their only two points of contact with humans were the desert bandits and merchants.
They were simple and tenacious, and their inherent impression of humans had likely been soured by those bandits.
Mi Luo and Sha Ying felt like they were completely on a scenic tour. It wasn’t that they didn’t want to be tense, but they truly didn’t feel any tension in the atmosphere.
The two of them were rather carefree. Sha Ying was slow on the uptake and a simple thinker, while Mi Luo tended to overthink things but also knew how to let them go. What was the use in thinking too much? It couldn’t change the current situation, so she might as well just let herself fly free.
There were four of them, but only three mounts, so Slayer and Su Xin shared one.
“Ugh… I suddenly have a bad feeling.”
Mi Luo spoke up unexpectedly.
Su Xin’s heart skipped a beat, and she began to pay close attention to her surroundings.
Slayer had her arms wrapped lazily around Su Xin’s waist.
Ever since returning from the Sea of Merfolk, she had become increasingly clingy.
Mi Luo was about to be blinded by their unconscious public displays of affection, while Sha Ying simply thought the two of them had a really great relationship.
They had arrived at the edge of the desert. Crossing it would lead them to the Beastkin territory.
Merchants would pass through this desert on their way to other lands.
Although the desert was perilous, with not only natural sandstorms but also lurking sand bandits, the profits from a single round trip were truly substantial. As a result, many merchants continued to pour in, one after another.
Just ahead of Su Xin was a merchant caravan. Some of these merchants had reached an understanding with the sand bandits to pass through safely, while others were powerful enough to clash with them head-on.
Su Xin felt she had encountered the latter.
That caravan was on high alert, with warriors and mages standing guard beside the cargo.
“Slayer, you go on ahead.”
“Mm-hm.”
“Where is she going?”
“This desert is too dangerous. You don’t need to come with me. Just like before, it’s better for you to wait for us here.”
Slayer had already left. Su Xin turned to Mi Luo and Sha Ying.
“Your bad feeling, is it about me entering the desert, or about me going to the Beastkin territory?”
“No, it’s not you…” Mi Luo frowned, her gaze shifting to Sha Ying.
“It’s about us?”
“Yeah.”
Mi Luo really disliked sensing bad news that involved herself.
“Then you’ll both come with me.”
Since Su Xin had brought them along, she had a responsibility to ensure nothing happened to them.
“Will that be okay?”
“Yes.”
Su Xin had no intention of traveling with the merchant caravan. She took Mi Luo and Sha Ying along another path.
Yellow sand filled the sky. It was currently morning, the perfect time to enter.
The temperature difference between day and night in the desert was too great; the night would likely be difficult to endure.
Besides the sand bandits, the threats also included demonic beasts hidden in the sand.
A few small creatures popped their heads up. Mi Luo stayed as quiet as a mouse, while Sha Ying automatically took care of the trouble, requiring no action from Su Xin.
A scuttling sound echoed around them. Having just dealt with a few creatures, Sha Ying felt a headache coming on just from hearing it.
“Your ability to jinx things is really something else,” Sha Ying sighed, gathering power in his hands.
“My fault?” Mi Luo pouted. What could she do? It’s not like she caused it.
Sensing the movement of prey, Desert Spiders came scurrying out in droves.
“Oh my god.”
Mi Luo covered her face. That bunch of things was disgusting enough to make you puke.
The Desert Spiders weren’t large and had a dark red color, but they came in a massive swarm, like a red tide.
Sha Ying sat back down on his mount, waiting for Su Xin to act.
These things weren’t suitable for a warrior like him to deal with. It would be extremely taxing, and the outcome wouldn’t be good.
Water magic dampened the area, mixing with the sand to create a sticky slush.
Mi Luo’s mount suddenly panicked and bolted. Lacking any martial skill, Mi Luo could only cling helplessly to the reins as it ran.
“There’s something under her mount! Go after her!”
Mi Luo’s body went rigid. I’ll be fine, I’ll be fine, she chanted in her mind, her eyes darting around for anything that could help.
She didn’t dare to jump off. Setting aside what the fall would do to her, who knew what kind of damn things were lurking under the sand?
Sha Ying lunged over and swept Mi Luo off her mount, barely managing to steady himself.
It was Mi Luo’s first time being carried bridal style, and she was a bit stunned.
“Are you okay?”
Mi Luo’s mount collapsed with a thud and was devoured at a speed visible to the naked eye, leaving only a skeleton behind.
“What the hell was that?!”
Mi Luo’s heart was still pounding with fear. What if those things had crawled onto her?
It was a swarm of ants.
Their bodies were transparent, making them nearly invisible under the sun. But after devouring flesh and blood, a faint red would appear inside them.
So now, the situation was a mass of faint red things writhing under the sunlight.
Su Xin created a water curtain to block them off and gestured for the two to leave.
The entire area was swarming with them; there was no way to clear them all.
“Oh, right! When I was running over just now, I saw a Beastkin girl over there, tangled up with a few people. Aren’t we going in? Maybe we should go rescue her.”
Mi Luo had excellent eyesight and had seen it clearly.
Su Xin nodded and ran toward that location.
Regardless of whether that person was Slayer or not, she had to go.
By the time Su Xin arrived, the sand bandits were already dead. A young girl with fox ears retracted her hand, her eyes curving into a smile.
When Sha Ying arrived carrying Mi Luo, the sight that greeted them was Su Xin kissing the Beastkin girl.
Mi Luo was shocked. Did Slayer just get cheated on?1
