Plan A
Heavenly Voice 16
Confession
Yan Shuang hadn’t expected this kind of situation to happen. She had originally just wanted to be apart from that person for a short while—not for any particular reason, not to keep herself in suspense, but to keep Su Xin in suspense, to let her feel what it was like without her company, to see if the little girl would miss her.
The environment in this area was extremely basic. Because they needed to enter the mountains to collect medicinal plant specimens, a temporary laboratory had been set up at the foot of the mountain. Some experimental equipment had been moved in to conduct the initial research and collection there.
The mountain collapse caught her completely off guard. She had originally planned to pack up and retreat the next day, but amidst the earth shaking and mountains swaying, she felt the formidable power of nature.
It was a disaster impossible to escape. That simple wooden cabin laboratory was destroyed just like that by the mud and rocks rolling down from the mountain. Before she even had time to run, she was already buried beneath the earth and wooden planks.
Yan Shuang’s assistant happened to have stepped outside for a smoke at that moment and watched helplessly as the mountainside collapsed. He quickly called the police, then dialed emergency services, and then called Yan Xi.
After arranging things on her end, Yan Xi called Su Xin, asking if she wanted to go to the incident site together to see her older sister.
When Su Xin hung up the phone, her hands and feet felt somewhat cold, her face had turned a little pale, and she looked quite unwell.
“What’s wrong?”
“A very important friend encountered a mountain disaster. I need to go see her now. Please help me postpone my schedule.”
After saying this, Su Xin grabbed her phone and ran to the entrance. She had arranged with Yan Xi to meet at the entrance here; Yan Xi would take her to the car.
Her agent opened his mouth, but ultimately didn’t chase after her. He stayed behind to finalize the details about the song with the production team. They saw the girl’s anxiety, but could only sigh with sympathy.
When others met misfortune, they saw it, but only saw it. If it didn’t happen to them personally, they simply couldn’t truly empathize, not even with their closest blood relatives.
“Let’s continue discussing the follow-up matters. She might be busy. Anyway, the song is already recorded.”
The agent continued speaking with a smile.
“Mm.”
Although that person felt sympathetic, he was also somewhat relieved inwardly. Su Xin had only found out the news after finishing the song. If she had known the upsetting news before singing, she would definitely have been distraught1, and then this song might have needed a different singer. He would certainly have found that extremely regrettable.
Many things in this world just happen, so suddenly. You never know what misfortune might befall the person who brushes past you today, just as you cannot predict your own future.
Su Xin hadn’t thought Yan Shuang would have an accident. In her heart, Yan Shuang was a very strong presence, someone who would arrange everything properly, who wouldn’t let herself run into any problems. But while man-made disasters could be dodged, what about natural calamities?
Lord Fourteen, what’s her condition now?
【Currently lying in an ambulance en route to the hospital. However, the location is quite remote, so it will take the ambulance a long time to get back to the hospital. Moreover, that hospital’s medical facilities aren’t particularly good, at least not comparable to those here.】
Fourteen stated the facts.
Lord Fourteen, will she be okay?
【This one cannot be certain either, as there are many external influencing factors. Based on calculations considering the local medical standards, the time factor, and her physical condition, there’s a 50% chance she’ll be fine. When the mountain collapsed, something struck the back of her head.】
She won’t get amnesia, right? Things aren’t that melodramatic2, are they?
【Unpredictable.】
I really, really hate this kind of drama.
No matter what TV series, movie, or other works Su Xin watched, she detested amnesia plotlines.
There’s actually a dialectical argument: when a person loses everything about themselves, are they still the same person?
Su Xin also had a dialectical view on this point. Because when a person loses their past, some instincts engraved in their bones cannot possibly be reversed, but aspects like personality, ways of handling things, and interests might be changed.
Some things, no matter how many times forgotten, will be fallen in love with at first sight upon seeing them again. Perhaps that is something indelible, engraved in the bones—sometimes it’s love, sometimes friendship, sometimes an interest.
Su Xin realized she was actually upset over the possibility that someone else might forget her.
What is the meaning of a person’s existence? It is to be remembered by everyone around them.
If a person lives from birth to adulthood, and no one around them knows them, remembers them, no one has heard their name, and no one has ever talked to them, then what is the meaning of their existence?
If one day you were forgotten by the whole world, what would you do?
Yan Xi arrived quickly, keeping the car speed at the maximum permissible limit.
“The journey is a bit long. It will probably take us about eight hours to reach the hospital where my sister is. They said they’re performing emergency treatment there, but the medical conditions are not very good. Even sending her two levels up, the doctors there can’t compare to my sister alone. So I brought a doctor along with me.”
“Okay.”
Yan Xi hadn’t told their parents about this. Telling them wouldn’t make much difference anyway. They would worry, but that worry wouldn’t last long, and they might instead start considering other interests.
Eight hours later, Su Xin arrived in that remote small city3. The police were still there, trying to salvage some items. After all, the research materials in the laboratory were very valuable, but now buried under the mud, it was unknown if they could still be retrieved.
Su Xin saw the unconscious Yan Shuang, an IV drip in her hand, her face pale, a wound on her head, and injuries on her hands and feet.
“Can she be transferred now?”
Yan Xi asked the man beside her. The man frowned.
“The situation doesn’t look optimistic. Judging from the external injuries, she’s hurt quite badly and likely sustained more severe abrasions. Accidents caused by this type of landslide often result in lifelong disabilities. However, as an experienced doctor herself, she should know how to protect her vital parts when disaster strikes. I just spoke with the medical staff here; she suffered an impact to the back of her head, but the medical conditions here aren’t sufficient for a CT scan… We should arrange for transfer as soon as possible, otherwise, the situation will only worsen.”
“Okay.”
“When will my sister wake up?”
“Right now, she might be in a temporary coma. Everything still depends on the CT scan results.”
Su Xin didn’t listen to what the two beside her were saying. She walked to the bedside.
The environment here wasn’t good at all. Mottled wall paint, a simple iron bed frame, the bedding on it already yellowed with some dark stains at the edges. The complexion of the quiet girl lying on the bed was even paler than the sheets. Her glasses had been removed, and the face that usually seemed intimidating and imposing suddenly appeared fragile.
You have to get better. And most importantly, you absolutely cannot lose your memory.
Life isn’t a K-drama; where would there be so many car accidents, amnesia cases, and terminal illnesses? Su Xin comforted herself this way.
Su Xin held Yan Shuang’s hand, the one without the IV drip. Its palm was ice-cold.
In the past, whenever she held this person’s hand, this person would definitely respond. But now, she lay on the hospital bed, hovering between life and death.
It was just too dramatic. Before they parted, they had even agreed to meet again after finishing their respective tasks.
Su Xin lowered her head, not wanting others to see the dejection in her expression, but suddenly she heard Yan Xi’s exclamation.
“Sis! You’re awake!”
Yan Shuang’s complexion was clearly extremely poor; from a medical standpoint, it was absolutely impossible for her to wake up at this moment. Yet, she miraculously opened her eyes, her gaze burning hot, fixed intently on Su Xin.
Am I dreaming?
Yan Shuang thought, her mind somewhat fuzzy. She couldn’t hear the sounds outside, and her vision wasn’t very clear either. She could only see the familiar silhouette of the person in her heart, and those bright eyes.
She couldn’t open her mouth, couldn’t make a sound.
“You have something to say to me, right?”
Su Xin seemed to discern the meaning in Yan Shuang’s eyes.
Yan Shuang’s lips trembled slightly, looking as if she wanted to say something, but not a single sound came from her mouth.
Su Xin leaned her ear closer, very, very close.
She heard a quiet, hoarse, intermittent voice, breath spraying onto her earlobe.
“There’s something… wanted to tell you for a long time… originally planned… to tell you before I left… If this time… I can make it through safely, would you be willing to let me pursue you…”
It was a very, very long sentence. If spoken by a normal person, it might have been finished quickly, but she expended great effort and time just to articulate this one sentence, especially emphasizing the last phrase.
This turn of events was a bit fast. Su Xin hadn’t expected Yan Shuang to have an accident here, just as she hadn’t expected Yan Shuang to confess to her at this moment.
“Let’s talk after you’re safe and sound.”
Yan Shuang kept her eyes open, not speaking again this time. She stared persistently at Su Xin, seemingly unwilling to give up without a response.
“You’re so bad. You’re pressuring me.”
Yan Xi was also stunned, not expecting her sister to actually have the mind to leverage her condition at a time like this. It was truly terrifying.
Aren’t you afraid she’ll reject you, and you’ll just cough up blood from anger, pass out, close your eyes, kick your legs4, and pass away5 just like that?!
The conspiracy-theorist Yan Xi started to imagine if this was all a drama directed and performed by Yan Shuang herself.
“Okay, I promise you.”
Hearing Su Xin’s response, Yan Shuang, on the hospital bed, closed her eyes and fell back into unconsciousness.
Yan Xi forced a smile that didn’t reach her eyes6. She can play like this?
Scheming girl.
