Fu Lingfeng x Wen Wan ⑧

    Be good~

“I don’t really like to bring up the past.”

Wen Wan was held in the Alpha’s embrace. The two of them were sitting on the bed in the bedroom—it wasn’t as big or as soft as the one in the Fu family home. The curtains were open, and the afternoon sunlight spilled in naturally.

Pheromones lingered in the air, carrying a gentle, cozy warmth.

Fu Lingfeng said, “Especially not the incident from high school.”

…And yet, it didn’t seem so warm after all.

The window was clearly closed, yet it felt as if a cold draft was seeping in through some unknown crack, piercing through her skin and sinking deep into her bones, causing even her heart to ache with a dense pain.

The Alpha’s pheromones surrounding her also became foul and nauseating.

It was about to press in on her—

Fu Lingfeng rested her head on the Omega’s shoulder, maintaining her embrace from behind. Because her head was buried, her clear, melodious voice was tinged with a hint of sullen displeasure:

“Because I consider that to be my black history.”

    “What?”

Wen Wan heard her, but she felt like she must have misheard. She reacted almost instinctively, with no time to conceal her emotions.

When Wen Wan turned her head, she was met with Fu Lingfeng’s dark, heavy eyes, which also held a hint of gloominess from a topic she didn’t want to bring up, and even some shame and anger. These were two emotions rarely seen on Fu Lingfeng.

    She didn’t speak.

In the shabby little room, the frost and snow suddenly ceased. It was as if sunlight, mingled with the colors of spring, was pouring in, about to usher in a world of birdsong and fragrant flowers. But because this shocking change had come so abruptly, it left Wen Wan looking completely wooden.

As if a body-freezing spell1 had been cast on her.

    “Stop laughing.”

Fu Lingfeng didn’t see that Wen Wan wasn’t laughing at all; in fact, her face was filled with utter astonishment. But because Wen Wan quickly lowered her head again, the story Fu Lingfeng was about to tell was one she herself found incomprehensible and shameful.

However, she’d already started talking. She’d already lost face. For a proud Alpha like Fu Lingfeng, there was nothing more to lose. If she still couldn’t coax her wife back, then she would have truly lost face for nothing!

    “Listen carefully.”

The Alpha’s voice was still a little vexed. Wen Wan looked up woodenly. “…Huh?”

After a couple of soft coughs, a completely stupefied Wen Wan, listening to Fu Lingfeng’s shame-filled narration, heard a “love story” from the perspective of the person involved—one that was completely different from all the versions she had heard in the past.

Or rather, the farcical play-acting of youth.

In high school, Fu Lingfeng was just as dazzling, becoming a campus celebrity2 the moment she enrolled.

At that time, people like her were ranked by looks, family background, and grades. Off-campus influence probably factored in as well, but looks were paramount. There were a few other campus celebrities like Fu Lingfeng back then, and Jiang Siyu was one of them.

Although they hadn’t differentiated yet, their A/O attributes were obvious at a glance. High school was also the peak time for budding romances, and with the matchmaking of those around them, the two got together.

For Fu Lingfeng, it was just a matter of going with the flow. But in the eyes of others, they seemed to be a match made in heaven, a divinely blessed union.

Their days together were even more lackluster. Perhaps Fu Lingfeng was just born with a few missing romance cells in her brain. The high-spirited Fu Lingfeng of her youth was even worse in terms of emotional intelligence than the Alpha before her now.

In less than three months, Jiang Siyu’s family business relocated, and her entire family moved abroad. The two of them then broke up as a matter of course.

“Wait—” This was completely different from what Wen Wan knew. She tried to sort out the timeline. “If that’s the case, why would you call it your black history?”

Fu Lingfeng’s voice was muffled. “During the process, I did a lot of stupid things.”

    Wen Wan’s heart suddenly twinged.

For the increasingly mature adult Fu Lingfeng, those things should be called ‘stupid,’ but in the eyes of a reckless youth, wasn’t it perhaps another kind of proof of a passionate ‘deep love’?

Wen Wan forced the words out, her voice hoarse, “Such as…?”

Fu Lingfeng took a moment to recall. To be honest, the memories of the past were very blurry for her, partly because she had actively sealed them away.

But given Wen Wan’s personality, if she didn’t explain things clearly, the other woman would start to overthink and get bogged down in details3, making wild guesses. So, from her dry memories, Fu Lingfeng carefully picked out a segment and explained it in as much detail as possible.

“It was during a sports meet, I think.”

“Her friend suddenly ran over, anxiously and expectantly telling me that she’d twisted her ankle.”

“Heaven knows how someone could twist their ankle just walking on a path when she wasn’t even participating in any events. I was in a hurry to get lunch at the time, so I told them to take her to the infirmary to get it checked.”

“That group of people just stared at me, with that strange look in their eyes, and then started condemning me. They said they were so disappointed in me, how could I be so indifferent when my girlfriend had sprained her ankle, that I was being so un-Alpha-like—I hadn’t even differentiated back then!”

“In the end, more and more people started gathering to watch, and even my friends were put in an awkward position, so I had no choice but to go over.”

“And then you carried her to the infirmary, right?” Wen Wan chimed in. “Like a princess carry?”

So the process was completely different from what she knew because the narrator’s perspective was different, but the outcome was still the same.

Isn’t it? It’s all the same. A ‘beautiful and perfect love story’ in the eyes of others.

Fu Lingfeng glanced at her and denied it. “No.”

“What?” Wen Wan was clearly so shocked that she couldn’t even maintain her previous gloomy mood of self-pity.

Fu Lingfeng knew that for Wen Wan to know this so clearly, someone must have whispered it in her ear, perhaps more than once.

The past she considered her black history, something she never wanted to bring up, was being used by someone else as a weapon to hurt her wife. At this thought, Fu Lingfeng’s heart couldn’t help but ache, and she began to feel remorse and regret.

She certainly wouldn’t let those who spread the rumors off the hook, but as things had developed to this point, the one most to blame was herself, for her passivity and inaction back then.

She was the true culprit who had caused her wife to live every day in a state of anxiety!

Or even if she hadn’t thought of it in her youth, if only as an adult, on any given day after their marriage, she had paid more attention to her wife, noticed the abnormality in her behavior, and helped her work through it…

Things wouldn’t have developed to this point.

Unfortunately, there are no ‘what ifs’.

But there was still time to salvage everything.

As her focus sharpened on this point, Fu Lingfeng’s IQ rapidly came online, and perhaps a tiny bit of it was even allocated to her EQ.

The Alpha understood very well that whether it was to save her marriage or simply to soothe her wife’s emotions, she had to clear up all the words and misunderstandings today. And right now was the perfect opportunity.

“I helped her walk,” Fu Lingfeng stated definitively.

    “Why?”

From the moment she started asking questions, her wife’s gaze had been fixed on her, which made Fu Lingfeng feel a little better. In comparison, she couldn’t be bothered with shame and anger anymore and decided to just tell the truth.

“She did suggest that I carry her. I refused.”

“It’s not that I couldn’t carry her, of course. I just don’t like physical contact with people I’m not familiar with.”

“At the time, I was merely trying out what it was like to be in a relationship. I didn’t want to invest that much.”

Finally, as if in self-exile, the Alpha dropped a bombshell. “Alphas don’t like being taken advantage of either, okay.”

    “…”

Wen Wan was so stunned that she didn’t even notice that the Alpha who claimed to dislike physical contact was currently holding her, head buried, her lips and teeth lingering over her neck, the base of her ears, her cheeks… kissing her softly.

    The ambiguousness was tantalizing.

The Alpha was taking advantage of her, yet Wen Wan herself remained completely oblivious.

“Then why did that rumor spread?” All the beautiful filters were shattered, and Wen Wan’s voice sounded a little dazed.

“She probably said it herself, or maybe her friends did,” Fu Lingfeng said, looking up ‘in the midst of her busy work’ to explain.

“It doesn’t really make a difference. She probably just wanted to save face. That’s why she agreed to be with me in the first place. I didn’t care, so I never bothered to explain.”

    Wen Wan: “…”

    It could be like that?

After so many days, having finally gotten her wife back in her arms, kissing her tenderly, Fu Lingfeng was unwilling to let even a single moment go. She lowered her head again, and amidst her ‘plowing,’ her resentful voice came through.

“If I’d known it would turn into this, I would have debunked the rumors back then!”

    “………”

An exasperated Fu Lingfeng was surprisingly similar to her seemingly unreliable younger sister. They were both so shameless.

Who could say they weren’t blood sisters?

Since she was saying everything, she might as well clear it all up at once.

“What about the heart-shaped necklace at the birthday party?”

“She hinted in advance that she wanted it,” Fu Lingfeng said. “It wasn’t expensive. Money isn’t an issue, and it saved me the trouble.”

    She paused.

“I always thought it was a bit ugly, too gaudy. That’s why I’ve never given you a style like that.”

She didn’t have a habit of putting on a show for others like a monkey, and besides, she didn’t want to give the same thing twice.

How could something like that possibly be worthy of her Wanwan?

    Wen Wan: “…”

“Someone confessed to her, and you rushed up to interrupt and forcefully put an arm around her shoulder?”

“Fake,” Fu Lingfeng said without hesitation. “I don’t know which idiot spread that.”

The Alpha even sneered. “Besides, I was just being chuuni4, not brain-dead.”

“Okay, maybe… maybe just a tiny, tiny bit of chuuni rebelliousness. A tiny bit. Completely different from the kind Ah Yun was born with!”

    “………”

She’s even stooping to elevating herself by putting others down and launching personal attacks now?

It had to be said, this side of Fu Lingfeng, so different from her usual self, was novel to Wen Wan, and it put her in a rather good mood. Suppressing the upward curve of her lips, she continued to ask, “You were late for school just to buy her breakfast?”

Fu Lingfeng saw it but didn’t point it out, answering the question seriously. “There was indeed one time I got up late—”

So among all those stories, one of them had to be true, right? Before Wen Wan’s mood could sink, Fu Lingfeng continued.

“But that breakfast was one I brought for myself, made at home. And in the end, it all went into my stomach. Not a single bite was left for anyone else!”

    “………………”

It was as if a floodgate that had been sealed for ages was suddenly thrown open, and the torrent poured out.

Throughout this process, Wen Wan brought up, one by one, all the romantic incidents she had ever heard, but every single one was personally ‘debunked’ by Fu Lingfeng herself, confirming they never happened at all.

It was like successive floods washing over her, each one threatening to drown Wen Wan who stood at the very bottom. But Fu Lingfeng, on the shore, held tightly to her hand, refusing to let her sink any further.

She wanted to pull her up, bring her to shore, so she could savor the taste of ‘living’ with ease, without being so constantly on edge.

Through it all, even as a love rival, Wen Wan felt a sliver of sympathy for that Miss Jiang. But at the same time, there was a hint of secret joy that seeped into her voice, impossible to hide.

She really was a bad Omega!

“Fu Lingfeng, you’re not lying to me, are you?” she asked, turning to caress the Alpha’s cheek.

Fu Lingfeng’s eyes were especially deep. This was the first time Wen Wan had initiated contact since their fight about the divorce.

Before, it had all been Fu Lingfeng’s forceful advances.

The scent of pheromones in the bedroom was thick, tangled together, making the Alpha’s voice hoarse. “Wanwan, in your heart, I shouldn’t be so unbearable as that.”

As she spoke, she took one of Wen Wan’s hands and kissed it.

Wen Wan’s fingers flinched. She felt a little embarrassed, unsure if it was because of her own emotional outburst or because the Alpha—who had always been proud and self-possessed like a flower on a high mountain—had suddenly become so clingy.

She lowered her head again and, shyly and timidly, asked the last question. “If that’s the case, why did you two get together in the first place? And how did it happen?”

“Friends set us up. There was no issue of who pursued whom. We met, thought it was okay, and nodded in agreement.”

“She’s very high-profile, likes to show off in everything she does to prove she’s the most pampered little princess in the world. Being with me was probably for that reason too, to satisfy her vanity. As for me—”

Fu Lingfeng, who had answered every question so smoothly before, fell silent at this moment.

Instantly, Wen Wan’s heart was in turmoil.

Bringing up an ex in front of one’s current wife was truly an unwise move, especially when that ex was the unforgettable first love, the ‘white moonlight’, with whom sparks could supposedly still fly even after so many years.

But Fu Lingfeng’s goal was, after all, to explain things clearly and, at the same time, to take this opportunity to completely shift Wen Wan’s attention from that person, from her and that person’s shared past, onto herself, her spouse.

Concern, pity… She wanted it all! She wanted her!

Fu Lingfeng buried her head and suddenly let out a sound that was half a scoff and half a laugh, though it was unclear who she was laughing at.

“Wanwan, you’ve been married into the family for several years now. You should know, Dad usually dotes on Ah Yun more, while Mother is more concerned with me, though it’s mostly in the context of raising me as the family heir.”

“Our family environment has been like this since we were young. I also have times when my emotions are unstable. My rebellious phase might have come a bit late, not until high school. Maybe I wanted to use this method to win the family’s attention. But do you know what I got in return, Wanwan?”

    “What?”

From the start of this conversation, Wen Wan’s emotions had been completely manipulated by Fu Lingfeng. Now, she was even actively offering up her heart into the other’s hands, letting it be led and carried without the slightest ability to resist.

Perhaps, she didn’t want to resist either.

“‘Don’t get anyone pregnant. You haven’t even differentiated yet. Also, don’t fall behind on your schoolwork or your family lessons, or else…’”

Fu Lingfeng clearly recited the words that had come from Madam Fu’s mouth back then, her tone a perfect imitation.

Of course, Madam Fu spoke to everyone in that tone and had only said that one sentence. As for the nearly ten minutes of much more caring and considerate words spoken by Mr. Gu Huaiyi… that wasn’t important. There was no need to tell her wife about that right now.

Just as expected, the look in Wen Wan’s eyes softened, her pupils once again reflecting Fu Lingfeng’s image.

And without realizing it, the two had shifted into a position where they were sitting face-to-face on the bed.

“At the time, she and I were each getting what we wanted. Maybe it was the recklessness of youth, maybe it was chuuni rebelliousness. All in all—”

Fu Lingfeng let her head fall heavily onto her wife’s shoulder and laughed again. “It was probably because… I was a sh#thead.”

    Wen Wan’s body stiffened.

Even though Fu Lingfeng had kissed her skin many times today, this face-to-face physical contact still felt like something she couldn’t quite get used to.

She still remembered they were in the middle of a fight—or more seriously, in the middle of a divorce.

But the Alpha before her now looked so pitiful, like a lion caught in the rain, its beautiful coat all droopy and stuck together.

    So pitiful.

Wen Wan hesitated for a moment, but in the end, her soft-heartedness won out. It might have been that Fu Lingfeng’s earlier explanations had convinced her. Or perhaps they were lies.

But she just never learned her lesson. Even if she knew it was very likely a deceptive trap, that’s just who she was—she would still jump right in!

So she reached out a hand to stroke the lion’s fur. Even though it was droopy, it was still soft and nice to touch, completely unlike how the person herself usually seemed.

“It’s… it’s in the past now. Don’t be sad… be good?”

Even Wen Wan herself trembled a little after saying that last term of endearment.

Maybe it was because she was pregnant, with her maternal hormones surging, that she dared to call Fu Lingfeng by such a cloying name.

But she snuck a peek, and the Alpha seemed absorbed in her own emotions… She didn’t notice, did she?

    Another peek.

Ah! The Alpha’s ears were red! She definitely heard it!!

Instantly, Wen Wan’s cheeks burned bright red. They both knew what was happening, and it should have been a mutually awkward situation, but the intermingling A/O pheromones in the room burned even hotter, threatening to spread like a wildfire.

They were practically pickling in it!

Wen Wan timidly tried to pull her hand back, but it was caught by the Alpha.

    “Continue.”

The Alpha’s body temperature was scorching hot; only now did it feel as if her entire body had been doused in scalding soup.

Wen Wan’s ears and cheeks were so red they looked like they could drip water. When she lowered her gaze, her eyelashes trembled, soft and delicate.

    “…Mmm.”

Until Fu Lingfeng released her hand, Wen Wan’s fingertips continued to stroke through Fu Lingfeng’s hair, traveling down to even brush against the skin of her neck, her glands…

Mechanical yet soft, awkward yet comfortable, and warm. Stroke after stroke, it seemed as if it would never end.

The Alpha, head down and eyes hidden, turned slightly away from Wen Wan, as if she were also embarrassed. But on her face, which concealed her emotions, the corner of her lips gently curled into a small arc.

    She was smiling.

A lion would never present itself as weak and pitiful, let alone for just being caught in the rain.

    Shhh—

She was only pretending, quietly waiting for her prey.

Once it sets foot in her trap, she’ll capture it instantly!

And so it was that the epic love story Wen Wan had heard about turned out to be nothing more than a legend spun by others, one that had been artistically embellished.

Fu Lingfeng herself didn’t find that memory the least bit wonderful. An unknown amount of time passed, the lion had been petted enough, and the blush on Wen Wan’s cheeks was gradually fading.

It was time for Fu Lingfeng to get down to business.

The Alpha’s expression turned serious. “I will explain this to all my friends, and to my former classmates and alumni.”

“Don’t!” Wen Wan immediately stopped her.

The previous warmth dissipated. Fu Lingfeng’s gaze fell upon her, deep and tinged with a bit of pressure.

The Omega’s voice unconsciously grew quieter. “How are you going to tell so many people? Besides, it would be very awkward for Miss Jiang…”

The author has something to say:

The push-and-pull isn’t over yet, there are still a few more chapters. As for how many, I have no idea either
