    I’m Begging You

    One more kiss.

    “Just one more kiss.”

    “…”

    “Jiejie~ Please, I’m begging you.”

    “…”

“Go change your clothes. We can’t be late for the banquet.”

“Ah… but really, I want you to kiss me again. Didn’t you promise me a reward yesterday if I didn’t drink? I’ve thought about it. I don’t want any fancy watches, or designer bags, or sports cars. I just want you to kiss me one more time.”

In the dressing room, Yu Yan, who was still reeling1 from the kiss Fu Yunqing had given her during the wedding ceremony, clung to her jiejie’s arm, trapping her in a corner. She refused to let go, her brow furrowed as she pleaded and pouted, being utterly unreasonable. “You told me to be good today. Haven’t I been good? I listened to everything you said and behaved so well. Can’t you see that?”

    “…”

    “Is it really not okay?”

“Just one. Just a light touch.”

Fu Yunqing turned her face away, but Yu Yan saw the tips of her ears turn red. In the end, she relented. “…We’ll talk when we get back. Go change first.”

    Hehe.

    Hehe.

Fu Yunqing was completely helpless against her. Fu Yunqing was simply incapable of refusing her.

Fu Yunqing spoiled her rotten. She must like her rotten, too.

“Fu-jiejie will definitely come save me,” Yu Yan said with conviction. But after turning her contact list upside down again and again, she still couldn’t find Fu Yunqing’s WeChat.

This WeChat account was strange, too. The profile picture, which used to be a Ragdoll cat belonging to a former flame, had been replaced with a black cat from who-knows-where. The Moments feed was completely empty, without a single post. Yu Yan suspected she’d logged into the wrong account.
But that wasn’t it. She logged out and then logged back in again with her phone number.

“What are you looking for her for?” Lu Yu pressed down on her hand. “You two divorced long ago.”

    “What?”

    Yu Yan’s world collapsed2.

    Just like that, divorced?

Did anyone know how complicated her wedding with Fu Yunqing had been? She’d flown to Ireland the moment she was on break, woken up early for makeup while still sick, and spent the entire day exhausted on a lawn in a cumbersome wedding dress. The backs of her heels were rubbed raw, her back was so stiff her neck felt like it would snap, and she still had to keep up the act, her face frozen from smiling so much. When the day was finally over and she’d returned to the hotel with Fu Yunqing, she had only just collapsed on the sofa for a moment’s rest. She hadn’t even had a chance to properly look at her beautiful wife, let alone get another kiss from her.

And now they were divorced? It was so surreal, it didn’t feel real at all. What a shame, what a waste, how tragic, how completely and utterly screwed.

    She was screwed.

    She really couldn’t find Fu-jiejie.

Yu Yan couldn’t believe it. She put down her phone and asked frantically, “Why did we get divorced? Was it because she couldn’t stand my mom always asking her for money? Or was it because my mom went bankrupt, and she started looking down on our family?”

Even with Yu Yan falling apart like this, Lu Yu was actually smiling. She said, with an air of gravity, “No. It was because of you.”

    “Because of me?”

What could possibly be wrong with her? She was just a poor little girl who had been dragged into a business marriage by her mother at the tender age of twenty. She was gentle and kind, beautiful and cute, a total sweet-talker, and quick-witted. All she had was a tiny bit of willfulness, a tiny bit of imperiousness, a tiny bit of vanity, and a tiny bit of a weakness for pretty women.

Could she have done something so awful that Fu-jiejie would divorce her? Yu Yan racked her brains but couldn’t think of anything. Her mom had told her to be well-behaved around Fu Yunqing, and she would have been! She would have obediently clung to her jiejie’s thigh for support.

“You were scum to Fu Yunqing.”

“Huh?” Yu Yan asked. “How was I scum?”

Lu Yu said, “How else? You got tired of her, couldn’t resist the temptation of other women, and ran off with someone else.”

    “…”

    Was that it?

Yu Yan imagined it. Fu-jiejie was made to wear a green hat3. Fu-jiejie was made to wear a green hat… If that happened, even she would be so ashamed she’d probably cut her off for life.

Yu Yan was instantly filled with remorse. She pressed her palm to her forehead, shook her head, and sighed. “My heart was too wild.”

Seeing her reaction, Lu Yu couldn’t help but laugh. “Aren’t you going to argue?”

    “How can I argue?”

How could Yu Yan deny it when she didn’t remember a thing? She felt like a bystander watching her own life unfold. The act of cheating on Fu Yunqing felt completely unreal to her, and of course, she felt no guilt.

But she knew herself well enough. So she thought that maybe, possibly, she really could have done it—she just loved women too much. If a pretty woman beckoned, she’d follow. Alas, a woman’s heart is weak to a beauty’s call. How could she do such a thing? So foolish. Truly a moral failing.

“Just kidding,” Lu Yu said, amused by her expression. It had been a long time since she’d seen this side of Yu Yan.

How dare she joke about this! Yu Yan shot her a fierce glare. “Spit it out. The truth.”

“Alright, alright,” Lu Yu sighed. “Before you two divorced, your mom and the Fu Corporation were working on a joint project overseas. But your mom scammed them. The project collapsed, the Fu Corporation took the blame, their stock price plummeted, and they lost several billion in an instant. The news said the chairman was so angry she was hospitalized.”

    “…”

That seemed a bit more serious than her cheating on Fu-jiejie.

Did Yu Lan only care about money, without any regard for her own daughter’s situation? How could she?

“Then…” Yu Yan asked weakly, “how is Granny now?”

Lu Yu thought for a moment. “She was in the hospital for a week and then was discharged. She’s retired now. People online say she enjoys traveling. The current chairman of the Fu Corporation is Fu Yunqing’s maternal aunt.”

“Oh. As long as Granny’s okay.”

Lu Yu tilted her head. “You have the heart to worry about others right now?”

Yu Yan said, “I know I’m the most pitiful one here.”

“I was just asking. I’m going to go jump off a bridge in a minute.”

    “Which bridge?”

“Which one is the most tragically beautiful?”

“Tragic beauty is useless. When they fish you out, your corpse will be incredibly miserable. Your body will be swollen, your skin deathly pale, and that skin… the moment someone grabs it, it’ll just peel right off…”

    “Lu Yu! Shut up!”

After a few more bites of roast goose, she stood up and walked toward the bedroom. “No, give me one night. I need to think of a more dignified way to die.”

Watching her retreating back, Lu Yu couldn’t help but chuckle.

She didn’t know how long this Yu Yan would last. The doctor said Yu Yan was in good condition; her memories might just return in a few days.

Although, privately, Lu Yu hoped they wouldn’t.

The truth was, Yu Yan was terrified of death. She was the last person in the world who wanted to die. She wanted to live a brilliant and beautiful life, a life of unbridled extravagance4

    But she’d woken up bankrupt.

The Fu Yunqing money train was well and truly derailed, cut off cleanly and decisively. WeChat, phone number, everything was deleted. Yu Lan’s phone was also unreachable. An online search for “Lanshan Group” really did bring up news of its bankruptcy declaration and the chairman’s flight from creditors. Oh, mother. Her mother. What on earth had her mother done that was so unconscionable?

She couldn’t count on her mom, either. Yu Yan narrowed her eyes, solemnly scrolling through her entire contact list without finding anyone who could replace Lu Yu in adopting her or lending her some spending money.

    It was too tragic.

Yu Yan felt her situation was just too tragic.

Although she still had Lu Yu, Lu Yu was really poor.

The apartment had two rooms. Lu Yu had given her the one with the big window, but even this “big” room was smaller than the bathroom in Yu Yan’s family home. Besides a bed, a desk, and a wardrobe, there was no room for anything else. The mattress wasn’t soft at all, and it was noisy outside, a cacophony of various sounds. The old-fashioned sliding windows had terrible soundproofing.

Last night, she had been staying in an ancient earl’s manor in Ireland, sleeping on bedding made for royalty, accompanied by elegant piano music and aromatherapy before bed. Here, there was only the smell of charcoal barbecue wafting over from a nearby street stall.

Her body, it seemed, had already grown accustomed to this impoverished life. Lying on the bed, she was steadily enveloped by the quilt. The pillow was just right, and the bed was filled with her own scent. The room was full of traces of her life, retaining some of her old habits, like the placement of her cosmetics and the arrangement of clothes in the wardrobe. It truly felt as if she had been living here for a long time.

But her mind still couldn’t accept it. She stared blankly at the ceiling, not the least bit sleepy.

October 10, 2025, 12:02 a.m. This was the first night she spent after traveling three years into the future. She had a terrible case of insomnia. Rather than the unreal plot of amnesia, she preferred to think of it as having time-traveled. She was in a strange world, utterly alone and abandoned5. Loneliness and sorrow washed over her. She felt so pitiful that the tip of her nose tingled, and she felt like crying. She hadn’t cried all day; she had even been joking around with Lu Yu, appearing so optimistic. As expected, people are most vulnerable at night. Hiding from Lu Yu, she secretly shed tears under the covers.

She thought of Fu Yunqing again.

Fu Yunqing was a somewhat coolly beautiful woman. She was polite and restrained, gentle and reliable. Even if there were no feelings between them, she was still incredibly indulgent and doting toward Yu Yan, playing a role akin to a jiejie in this marriage that lacked an emotional foundation.

Yu Yan really liked her, was completely infatuated with her. How could she possibly bear to cheat on her?

Did she really cheat on Fu Yunqing?

If that was true… who could possibly be more beautiful and charming than Fu Yunqing?

Yu Yan couldn’t help but try to imagine the face of her affair partner. How gorgeous must this great beauty be? And where was she now? Why hadn’t she come to find her?

She couldn’t picture it at all.

The author has something to say:

    Another year, Happy New Year!

Yu Yan—the type of girl who is direct about her crushes and falls for every person she meets.
