My Romance Game Updated – Chapter 30
by Little PandaComing to an Understanding
Rather than saying Chen Gu cared about whether Ren Chenxi would return to Nanhai Base with them, he was more concerned about the medicine she carried. Sun Jia, back at the base, was severely injured and desperately needed that medicine. Although Ren Chenxi had said she would repay the wound medicine she had used of Sun Jia’s…
But, how much would she repay? And would it be enough to completely heal Sun Jia’s injuries? If one dose wasn’t enough, Sun Jia would surely need much, much more. Ren Chenxi was a spatial esper; she must have a lot of medicine in her space.
Everyone present could see that Ren Chenxi held a deep animosity toward Mu Ning. Chen Gu was terrified that Ren Chenxi would get annoyed, decide not to go to Nanhai Base, and head for another base instead. Perhaps she would leave some medicine behind before she left, but who could know if it would be enough?
Therefore, Chen Gu very much hoped that Ren Chenxi would accompany them to Nanhai Base. It was selfish, but their companion truly needed this mobile pharmacy.
As if sensing Chen Gu’s anxiety, Ren Chenxi tugged at the corner of her mouth, glanced at Mu Ning who had turned back to stare at her again, and said coldly, “Relax. Nanhai Base doesn’t belong to her alone, so why wouldn’t I go? It’s so dangerous outside. Why would I make things hard for myself by giving up a large base like that to risk running to another?”
After such an unbridled outburst, having vented all her long-suppressed forbearance and resentment at Mu Ning, Ren Chenxi was much calmer now. Although the system’s side quest1 had triggered her emotional explosion, after cooling down, Ren Chenxi realized that a side quest was just a secondary task that she could choose to do or not. Her most important priority was still the main quest.
Surviving for ten years in this dangerous apocalypse was her ultimate goal.
So, even if she didn’t want any more contact with Mu Ning right now, there was indeed no need to make things hard for herself. After tonight, Ren Chenxi had truly felt the cruelty and danger of the apocalypse. This close brush with death also made Ren Chenxi realize that her own strength was insufficient. H City had only one large base. Ren Chenxi didn’t dare to act out of spite against Mu Ning and pass up the relative safety of Nanhai Base, placing herself in even more unknown danger.
She was Ren Chenxi now. Mu Ning’s various stats had nothing to do with her anymore. Mu Ning had the water resources she needed, but she had the life-saving medicine they urgently required. So, at Nanhai Base, she could be on equal footing with Mu Ning. There was no need to suck up to her or cling to her; she could trade with Mu Ning fairly. Besides, Mu Ning wasn’t necessarily the only water-system esper at Nanhai Base. Once she got to the base, she could stick with the companions she had gathered on the road, stay far away from Mu Ning, and just treat her like a stranger if they met. Wouldn’t that work?
In any case, they had already reached H City, and Nanhai Base was indeed her best option at the moment. She could stay at this base for the time being, working hard to accumulate crystal cores and cards and improve her strength. Once she was strong enough, couldn’t she just leave Nanhai Base then?
Ren Chenxi’s answer brought another wave of relief to Chen Gu, as well as to Jian Dan, Song Xin, and the others nearby. In their eyes, they were already on Xi-jie’s team. Xi-jie had saved their lives. If Xi-jie didn’t want to go to Nanhai Base, they would of course have to brave the dangers with her and find another place to settle. Fortunately, although Xi-jie didn’t get along with this ice beauty, she still managed to take the big picture into account.2
As for Mu Ning, her expression didn’t show any fluctuation upon hearing Ren Chenxi’s reply. She simply turned her gaze back to the window, staring entranced at the bright, clear moonlight that had reappeared in the night sky.
But a moment later, Mu Ning stood up.
“Alright, so much for resting.”
Ren Chenxi had also spotted them on her mini-map: another dense cluster of red dots was closing in on their position. Through the window, they could see pairs of green-glowing eyes in the darkness outside. The few students from S University were both terrified and relieved. Luckily, they hadn’t traveled through the night, and luckily, they had run into the powerful Mu-xuejie’s team.
Throughout the night, mutated beasts3 and zombies had continuously swarmed the small house. Fortunately, the later waves were mostly low-order, and the occasional one or two 4th-order ones were quickly dispatched by Mu Ning. Besides Mu Ning, all the members of her small team were espers. Chen Gu and another boy were strength espers, another girl was a speed esper, and Zhang Tongqi’s ability was a fingernail mutation. Compared to Yang Xiangrui’s rather useless ability to extend a part of his body, Zhang Tongqi’s nails could not only lengthen, but each one could also transform into a sharp and hard steel claw. There was another boy, Wei Yuze, whose ability was a hair mutation.
Wei Yuze was a particularly burly and masculine-looking guy, yet he had waist-length hair. This head of silky black hair, which made many girls envious, was actually Wei Yuze’s most lethal weapon. The seemingly thin and soft strands were in fact extremely tough. Against low-level zombies like 1st-order ones, a single strand of hair could even decapitate them. Against slightly higher-level enemies, even if the slender strands couldn’t sever their limbs, they could still restrain the enemy, or even control them.
But because Wei Yuze’s hair had bound countless zombies and mutated beasts, no matter how beautiful or glossy he washed it, his companions would never touch it.
According to Chen Gu, at Nanhai Base, most espers had abilities that enhanced their physical constitution—enhanced strength, speed, hearing, sight, and so on—or, like Zhang Tongqi and Wei Yuze, had abilities that involved a partial body mutation. Natural-type espers were the rarest, while a wide variety of other abilities, both useful and useless, also existed. Of course, there were also spatial espers like Ren Chenxi, but Chen Gu was certain that the spaces of those few spatial espers were definitely not as large as Ren Chenxi’s, which could hold two vehicles.
With the addition of Chen Gu and the other espers, even though zombies and mutated beasts continued to attack throughout the second half of the night, their group of espers managed well. Each guarded a window, and the main door was blocked by the two strength espers. With such an orderly division of labor, plus the fact that most of the enemies in the latter half of the night were low-order, the espers guarding the windows had a fairly easy time, even without Jian Dan’s group of three lifting a finger.
Chen Gu even found the time to warn these newcomers to H City. He told them never to wander around these suburban areas at night; even the vicinity of their base wasn’t necessarily safe. The apocalypse was extremely dangerous at night, and most people at the base wouldn’t stay out overnight for missions. If they hadn’t wasted time searching everywhere in the neighboring province for medicine today, they would have definitely rushed back to Nanhai Base before dark.
But even if they couldn’t make it back to Nanhai Base, they wouldn’t have chosen a house with such poor defenses.
“We were originally heading to a hotel in the next county town. That hotel is the tallest building in the area, with eleven floors. We’ve already cleared out all the zombies inside, so it serves as our temporary shelter when we’re out searching for supplies or on missions and can’t make it back in time. Generally, as long as we stay on a high enough floor, it’s hard for zombies and mutated beasts to find us. Even if they do, the time it takes for them to climb all the way up gives us plenty of time to counter-attack.”
Chen Gu’s words were a great lesson for this group of young people new to H City. Of course, after being educated, some people’s attention began to drift.
“Hey, Chen-ge, since you were originally going to the hotel in the county town, why did you suddenly come to this broken-down house of ours?”
“Hmm…” Hearing this question, Chen Gu first glanced at Mu Ning, then continued, “It was so dark tonight, but you guys suddenly set off several intense flashes of light, right? We noticed. Originally… our Boss never likes to meddle in other people’s business, but tonight… it was the Boss who told us to come take a look…” After speaking, Chen Gu shot another look at Ren Chenxi.
Ren Chenxi didn’t react, continuing to focus on smashing the zombies outside with the crystals Tang Ying handed her. But deep down, she knew very well that she might… owe Mu Ning her life. Just now, she had been overcome with extreme anger,4 and she hadn’t cared whether Mu Ning wanted to kill her or not. She had even thought that if Mu Ning killed her, it would be a life for a life. But now that she had calmed down, Ren Chenxi wanted to complete her mission, to leave this damn game world, so she didn’t want to die anymore. And this debt of a life saved5 by Mu Ning made her feel extremely awkward.
“Aow—” Another sharp crystal pierced through a zombie’s eye socket. Ren Chenxi watched coldly as the zombie fell, then let out an almost inaudible sigh. She didn’t want to have too much to do with Mu Ning, but she had to find a way to repay this life-saving debt.
As if hearing Ren Chenxi’s soft sigh, Mu Ning, who had been focused on the situation outside the window, turned her head to glance at her again. But after noticing Ren Chenxi’s cold expression, she pursed her lips and turned her attention back to the mutated beasts and zombies outside.
Everything Chen Gu said was true. Normally, with her personality, she couldn’t be bothered to meddle in other people’s affairs. So when she saw the first flash of light from this location, she had no reaction and let Chen Gu continue driving. But then, two more flashes lit up in succession. Inexplicably, a sense of panic and unease grew in her heart, as if she would definitely regret it if she didn’t go see what was happening at the source of the light.
And so, Chen Gu, who had been driving along just fine, received Mu Ning’s order to turn around. By the time Mu Ning’s van arrived at the location of the flashes, another blinding white light flared up at that very moment. When the white light faded, Mu Ning saw from a distance, surrounded by a pack of wolves, a figure that was somewhat familiar. A figure that had haunted her thoughts day and night6 for two years.
In the end, she had saved the person surrounded by the wolf pack. Upon seeing that person’s face, Mu Ning was undoubtedly ecstatic. Heaven knows how much effort it took for her to suppress her emotions and not lose her composure on the spot.
It was just a pity… the appearance was the same, but the person was not the same one.
The author has something to say:
Hey, hey, hey, all of you calling the author “short and small,”7 you’ve gone too far! I’m at least sticking to my daily three!8 Besides, I’m in the south, there’s no heating, and I’m defending against the cold with nothing but a body full of righteous qi!9 In this freezing weather, my fingers are all stiff. It’s not easy to squeeze out 10 characters a minute!
And! Although I’m slow at stacking characters,10 my fingers are long! Really long! The kind of long that will make you die of envy!
