My Romance Game Updated – Chapter 26
by Little PandaSR Card
When Mu Ning heard Ren Chenxi say her wound hurt, she wanted to go over and check on the injury. However, after noticing that Ren Chenxi was still avoiding her, she ultimately forced out a cold, stiff sentence: “Then you should get some proper rest now!”
“Yes, yes, Xi-jie, you should rest a bit more, okay? You used the most esper ability when we were dealing with the mutated wolves, and then you got hurt. It’s normal to be exhausted…”
The ever-perceptive Jian Dan1 gave Ren Chenxi a gentle tug. Ren Chenxi took the opportunity to move next to her, putting some distance between herself and Mu Ning.
However, Ren Chenxi had already slept for a while in the van when she was unconscious. Now, she wasn’t the least bit sleepy. Coupled with the stabbing pain that pulsed from her wound, it was impossible for her to fall asleep. Since she couldn’t sleep, she decided to find something to do to pass the time. The night was still dark; it would be a long while until dawn.
Ren Chenxi tried her best to ignore the gaze that shot over from Mu Ning’s direction from time to time. She hunched her shoulders, leaned against the wall with her eyes half-closed, and called out the game panel2. A little while ago, while Mu Ning and her teammates were clearing out the mutated beasts and zombies, she had taken the chance to fish in troubled waters3 by throwing a bunch of stones. Now that she had nothing to do, it was the perfect time to check her haul.
Ever since her backpack started filling up, Ren Chenxi had been very careful about organizing it. She generally left the first two rows—a total of 40 slots—on the first page empty. While the backpack’s automatic pickup4 was convenient, it wasn’t considerate enough to sort monster drops into the categories she’d set up. Normally, items collected by the automatic pickup were all dumped into the nearest empty slots. If the front slots were full, the items would be piled into the slots further back, which made finding things somewhat inconvenient for her. Sometimes she’d even wonder, When did this stuff get in my backpack?
She used the three rows below the empty slots for cards and various other small things she could throw, making them easy to grab as weapons the moment danger appeared.
So, as soon as Ren Chenxi opened her backpack, she immediately checked the two rows of new items on the first page to see her crystal core5 harvest.
Of the thirty-plus mutated wolves in the first wave of attackers, aside from three 4th-order mutated wolves, the rest were all low-tier. Ren Chenxi had managed to land a ‘sure hit’6 on nearly every single one of them. As for the second wave of mutated beasts and zombies, she had been unconscious in the van for the first part and only started to fish in troubled waters and land ‘sure hits’ on about thirty targets after returning to the house. Although the second wave was larger, they were all low-tier as well. As a result, her backpack suddenly contained 3 level-4 crystal cores, 13 level-3 crystal cores, over 20 level-2 crystal cores, and over 20 level-1 crystal cores.
After converting all those crystal cores, she now had a total of 6845 crystal stones7! Seeing her crystal stone balance, Ren Chenxi’s mood instantly improved.
But… when she thought about using those 6000-plus crystal stones to draw cards… she could only draw six times. Her mood plummeted again. Tsk, I get five free draws every day. By that measure, over 6000 crystal stones isn’t that much!
Sigh. I just hope the crystal cores from the farther drops that didn’t get picked up by my backpack won’t have despawned by morning.
Ren Chenxi was only down for a moment before she forced herself to cheer up and check her other gains. After all, besides crystal cores, the monsters had other extra drops. She had originally thought that only humanoid monsters like zombies would drop items they were carrying. But after converting all the crystal cores to crystal stones, she discovered that among the automatically picked-up monster drops, there were even extra drops from beast-type monsters.
Of course, the mutated wolves hit with greasy cards were guaranteed to drop a bottle of gasoline. Besides the oil, Ren Chenxi had also collected a dozen pieces of fresh wolf meat, a few wolf pelts, several wolf fangs, and other miscellaneous items. The drops from other mutated beasts were more or less the same. What surprised her most was that she had even gotten several goose eggs!
Looking at the goose eggs, Ren Chenxi remembered that among the mutated beasts that had ambushed them, besides the usual wild animals from the mountain forests, there had been a small flock of mutated geese. Back in the day, geese were basically the village tyrants of the countryside. Now that the apocalypse had arrived, these mutated village tyrants actually dared to compete with wild beasts for prey? And on top of that, why were the ones with eggs in their bellies also running out to fight?
Whatever, I’m not going to try and figure out the brain circuits of these mutated beasts. Anyway, according to the system backpack’s appraisal, all this meat and these eggs are edible. In the apocalypse, you can never have too much food.
Compared to the extra drops from the mutated beasts, the drops from the humanoid zombies were truly lacking. Most zombies dropped things like watches, rings, and necklaces—items that were worthless in the apocalypse. Only a small number of them dropped things they carried as weapons, like small knives, daggers, or scissors.
In Ren Chenxi’s opinion, the most useful and practical of all the extra drops from the humanoid zombies was probably an unopened bottle of light soy sauce.
So, did this zombie that dropped the soy sauce turn into a zombie on its way out to buy it, or was it bitten and turned after it had already bought it? No matter how it happened, it must have been tough for this zombie to make the long trek from a human settlement where you could buy soy sauce all the way to these suburbs.
At the same time, Ren Chenxi confirmed that the number of mutated beasts and zombies in H City8 was far greater than in any other city she had passed through. Is it because H City has more people? So zombies and mutated beasts from other provinces and cities are drawn here?
Just as Ren Chenxi was pondering this, Tang Ying9 and the others coincidentally used the break to ask Chen Gu’s10 group for information about H City. They happened to ask why there were so many zombies and mutated beasts, and why there seemed to be quite a few 4th-order mutated beasts.
Chen Gu’s answer confirmed Ren Chenxi’s guess. H City had a large population, which naturally attracted zombies and mutated beasts. When other “dead cities” lost their human presence, the zombies and mutated beasts would gather towards nearby inhabited cities. If zombies gathered in populous cities driven by instinct and the lure of human flesh, then mutated beasts did the same for prey and to grow stronger.
Human espers could level up using the crystal cores of mutated beasts and zombies, and mutated beasts could sate their hunger and level up by preying on other mutated beasts and espers. Thus, the areas surrounding large survivor bases always had far more zombies and mutated beasts than small, sparsely populated towns.
At this, Chen Gu gave a wry smile and told them that because the population of their Nanhai Base11 was so large, they had even experienced a zombie tide a few months ago. That time, almost every esper in the base was mobilized. Even ordinary people without esper abilities picked up weapons to help defend the base. It was also during that battle that their boss killed the most zombies and his esper ability advanced to the fifth order in one go.
“So… are there many 5th-order espers in your base?”
“Not many, just two. One is the base leader, and the other is our boss.”
“Then are there any 5th-order mutated beasts or zombies in H City?”
“I think there must be, but we just haven’t encountered any yet. After all, while we espers are leveling up, the zombies and mutated beasts are leveling up too. And since their numbers are far greater than ours, it’s definitely easier for them to level up.”
Chen Gu’s words plunged the young people into silence once again. They had been so full of hope for the base in H City. Amid the dead silence, Ren Chenxi’s lips curled into a sarcastic smile.
So naive. It’s already the apocalypse, and they’re still hoping for a completely safe and stable zone like in times of peace?
Ignoring the sighing youths, Ren Chenxi refocused her attention on her backpack. She knew that if she wanted to survive in this cruel apocalypse, the key was to improve her own strength. And her current lifeline was this game system—her sure hit skill and the cards in the card prize pool12.
If she had an SR-rank card13, she wouldn’t have been in such a sorry state when facing the 4th-order mutated wolf, or even the 4th-order mutated leopard before that. She wouldn’t have been helpless in a life-or-death crisis, with no ability to struggle or resist, only to be saved by the one person she wanted to see least.
But to get higher-rank cards, she had to keep drawing. The free draws weren’t even enough to cover her expenses, so how could she synthesize more R-rank cards14, let alone SR cards? That meant… she had to get more crystal cores to draw cards! But to get more crystal cores, she would definitely need high-rank cards to ensure her safety. It was a vicious cycle15!
Unless… she could keep hugging the thigh16 of a 5th-order esper like she did today and leech some crystal cores for free.
At this thought, Ren Chenxi anxiously stole a glance at Mu Ning on the other side, only to meet her dark, sunken eyes. Those eyes were as black as ink, so deep they seemed to want to swallow a person whole. Startled, Ren Chenxi immediately yanked her gaze away.
Uwaah, no way! This wooden goddess17… if possible, I really don’t want to hug her thigh!
Ren Chenxi shrank back. Once the burning gaze on her had faded, she went back to looking through her few remaining cards. If she remembered correctly, she had used up all her greasy cards18 and flash cards19 in the battle against the wolf pack. As for explosion cards20, she should have two left. After being dragged out the window by the 4th-order mutated wolf, she had initially wanted to throw an explosion card. But then she figured an R-rank explosion card wouldn’t be a one-hit kill against a 4th-order mutated wolf, so she didn’t waste it and used her dagger instead.
Thinking back now, I must’ve had water on the brain. I almost died, what was I afraid of wasting a card for? At that critical moment, if I hadn’t been saved by that wooden goddess, all the remaining cards in my backpack, including those two explosion cards, would have been completely wasted… eh?
Wait a minute??? When did five more explosion cards appear in my backpack? And they’re placed right after the R-rank explosion cards, which means they weren’t monster drops picked up automatically. So these cards…
Wait, wait, wait!!! Why are these cards SR-rank?! R-rank explosion cards are blue, but these new ones are purple! And besides these five SR explosion cards, there are also five SR recovery cards21!
Where did these cards come from?
Suddenly, Ren Chenxi remembered the system prompts she’d heard when she was blinded by the flash card.
Could it be that, at that critical moment between life and death, the system had a burst of conscience and sent me some kind of “escape from the jaws of death” gift pack? If that’s the case, I shouldn’t have ignored those system prompts! No, no, no, from now on, I can’t ignore any system prompts!
Eh, that’s not right either! If the system really wanted to give me an “escape from the jaws of death” gift pack, the timing was terrible, wasn’t it? At such a critical moment, what time did I have to rummage through my backpack for cards? If you really wanted me, the player, to escape from the jaws of death, couldn’t you have just dropped an invincibility buff22 on me? What’s with this gift pack…
Muttering to herself, Ren Chenxi continued to scroll through the game panel. After a bit of searching, she finally found out where those 10 extra SR cards had come from.
The author has something to say:
Trust me, Blockhead really isn’t treating Xixi as a substitute23; she directly suspects that Xixi is Ren Muhui~
