Morning Longing for Warmth – Chapter 70
by Little PandaChanges
The Board of Directors knows that President Wei is ill.
When Su Ziyan saw something was wrong with Shiyi, he immediately had Pei Tian restrain her and forcibly took her to the hospital for examination. After making a scene, Shiyi followed silently for the checkup. Pei Tian was very worried and asked, “What’s wrong with her?”
Third Miss had entrusted him with a perfectly healthy person, who was now so distressed she was coughing up blood – this wasn’t a normal reaction by any measure.
“Acute stress response,” Su Ziyan said, looking at the examination report. “When people experience extreme emotions, it can trigger a stress response. The gastric mucosa becomes ischemic, leading to the blood. I’ll give her an IV drip and some comfort – it’s nothing serious.”
Hearing Su Ziyan’s words, Pei Tian relaxed. He sat by Shiyi’s bedside and said quietly, “President Wei.”
He wasn’t good with words. Having stayed by Wei Hui’s side, he was habitually taciturn, and Wei Hui wasn’t one for unnecessary talk either. So he kept things simple, never imagining he’d one day need to comfort someone. Pei Tian opened his mouth, stammered for a moment, and finally said, “You can’t collapse. What if Third Miss returns and you’re down – what then?”
Shiyi’s expression had been calm, but at the mention of “Third Miss,” her eyes showed a glimmer of life. Still clutching the bloodstained letter, her fingers trembling, she asked, “Where is she having the surgery?”
Hearing her speak, Su Ziyan immediately replied, “She’s gone to the research facility at Weiss.”
Shiyi nodded: “Pei Tian, make preparations. We leave immediately.”
Su Ziyan held her back: “Your body can’t handle the strain right now. Although the examination shows nothing serious, your stress response is severe. You could faint or cough up blood at any time – your body won’t be able to take it.”
Shiyi looked up at him, gritting her teeth, and said word by word: “Making me wait here helplessly – do you think I can handle that?”
Su Ziyan gripped the medical chart: “She doesn’t want you to go.”
At this point, he spoke truthfully: “She doesn’t want you to go… to see her off on her final journey.”
“You’re lying!” Shiyi suddenly roared. “You’re lying! This isn’t her final journey, it’s not! Su Ziyan, give her back to me! Take me to her! You…”
She nearly retched while speaking. Su Ziyan glanced at Pei Tian, exchanging a look. The two restrained Shiyi as Su Ziyan administered a sedative. Watching Shiyi slowly drift off to sleep, Su Ziyan shook his head, his expression grief-stricken.
These two, their care for each other ran bone-deep. One feared the other couldn’t handle seeing her final moments, while the other feared missing the last goodbye – truly an impossible choice.
“Will this be alright?” Pei Tian actually wanted to see Wei Hui too. He had followed Wei Hui for so many years; if she really passed, he wouldn’t even get to say goodbye. He felt pained and heartbroken. Su Ziyan felt the same – his feelings for Wei Hui weren’t any less than anyone present. Since childhood, he had treated Wei Hui like his own sister, searching for treatments, seeking medical help everywhere, swallowing his pride to beg again and again. Now the three people who cared most for Wei Hui couldn’t be by her side during surgery.
Su Ziyan sighed: “Let’s leave it for now. We’ll discuss when she wakes up. First, we need to calm her emotions.”
Pei Tian nodded and sat on the stool by the bedside. There was a knock at the door, and Su Ziyan was called out by a nurse, leaving only Pei Tian and the sleeping Shiyi in the room.
Shiyi had many strange dreams. In one moment, Wei Hui didn’t survive, and she attended her funeral, unable to bear it, attempting suicide before being pulled back. In another, Wei Hui recovered and returned from abroad, standing at the airport smiling at her, softly calling: “Shiyi.”
“Huihui,” Shiyi mumbled through tears. Pei Tian, sitting nearby, could only clench his fists and turn away. Just then, he heard: “Assistant Pei.”
Shiyi’s voice was hoarse and low upon waking, but calm. She said: “Please help me call Doctor Su in.”
Pei Tian stared at her. Shiyi lowered her eyes: “Don’t worry, I’m much better now.”
Seeing this, Pei Tian replied: “Alright, wait here. I’ll go get him.”
Su Ziyan had just left another patient’s room. Hearing Shiyi was awake, he immediately came over, standing by the bed and looking her over. Seeing her calm profile and deep gaze, Su Ziyan asked: “How do you feel?”
Shiyi suppressed the churning in her chest and the heart-wrenching pain, nodding: “Much better.”
She swallowed: “Can you contact her?”
Su Ziyan studied her for a few seconds, shaking his head: “No, I can only reach Doctor Bai, but I’m afraid…”
He worried about disturbing Doctor Bai during surgery, so he’d been waiting for news. Since Wei Hui left, there had been no updates. The waiting was unbearable; Su Ziyan understood this deeply. He patted Shiyi’s shoulder: “Are you sure you’re alright?”
Shiyi nodded: “I’m sure. I want to see her, wait for her to come out, okay?”
The most humble request. Su Ziyan opened his mouth several times before saying resignedly: “I’ll contact Doctor Bai’s assistant.”
Shiyi could only agree: “Okay.”
While Su Ziyan went to make the call, Shiyi got up, taking her suit jacket to the bathroom. When she came out, Su Ziyan had finished calling, his expression somewhat relieved: “The surgery hasn’t started yet, but she’s in isolation. There’s no signal inside, so you can’t talk to Huihui. The surgery is this afternoon – if you go now, you should still be able to see her.”
Without hesitation, Shiyi said: “Assistant Pei , arrange the plane.”
Pei Tian didn’t respond as usual, staring at his phone hesitantly. Seeing his expression, Shiyi frowned: “What’s wrong?”
“I just saw internal news,” Pei Tian said. “The Board knows about Third Missβs illness.”
Shiyi’s face turned pale: “What?”
Pei Tian handed her his phone, showing a financial news report: “Wei Tian Chairperson Wei Hui Reportedly Gravely Ill…”
Additionally, Weibo had picked up the story, with “Wei Tian Chairperson’s Serious Illness” trending.
βWei Tian? Isn’t Wei Tian’s Chairperson that Wei Hui?
βI saw her once, she didn’t look like a sick person.
βThis can’t be true, must be fake news, right?
Various rumors began circulating. Clearly, someone had planted this information, and that person was most likely Luo Zhouping. Unexpectedly, he hadn’t given up, making one last desperate attempt.
Shiyi sat by the hospital bed, listening to Pei Tian’s report: “President Wei, the online news has spread. Controlling it will be difficult. Now…”
“Go on,” Shiyi pressed her temples. “What else?”
Pei Tian said: “The Board shareholders know too.”
It was like rain pouring through a leaking roof. Shiyi stood up, torn between Wei Hui, whose surgery results she desperately wanted to await, and Wei Hui’s life’s work – Wei Tianβs future. Pei Tian suggested: “Should we delay the company matters?”
“We can’t delay.” Shiyi knew Luo Zhouping’s character well. Having just been removed from his position, he was waiting for a chance to recover. If she left now, with no one guarding Wei Tian, his comeback wasn’t impossible. So now sheβ Shiyi said slowly: “I can’t leave. Assistant Pei, prepare the car. We’re going to the company.”
Pei Tian glanced at her expression: “Reporters have blocked the company entrance.”
Shiyi’s face darkened as Pei Tian continued: “The Board has sent word – they’re calling an emergency meeting.”
Wei Tian was holding an emergency board meeting, reporters surrounded the entrance, and employees were buzzing with gossip. Wei Hui hadn’t been seen at the company for quite some time. After her car accident, she’d been recovering, with Wei Nuan running things, so nobody had considered serious illness. Now, seeing the reports, debates began.
γIs she really seriously ill? President Wei is so young.γ
γWhy not? I always thought President Wei’s pale complexion wasn’t right.γ
γBut it doesn’t make sense, what illness could President Wei have?γ
γMaybe heart disease? Isn’t that what took Old President Wei?γ
γNonsense! If it was heart disease, didn’t you see how Old President Wei was at the end? Our President Wei looks nothing like that!γ
After entering the company through the side door, Shiyi heard them discussing this matter. Her face cold, Pei Tian beside her said: “No work to do?”
The crowd immediately dispersed. Shiyi walked in her heels with determined steps to the elevator. The board meeting was being held on the top floor – this was the third emergency board meeting this month. The first was about Luo Zhouping wanting to sell shares, the second about Gu Huai selling shares, and the third about Wei Hui’s illness. Everyone was anxious.
Reporters outside tried to push in, but the security was strict – there was no way to enter. As they jostled at the entrance, some speculated: “Must be inherited heart disease from Old President Wei.”
That single statement awakened others. Gossip news immediately appeared, the words “suspected heart disease” hitting Shiyi’s chest like a hammer. Before entering the meeting room, Shiyi reviewed all these baseless reports and had Pei Tian select the most prominent outlet to send a legal notice, accusing them of groundless speculation affecting Wei Hui’s reputation, warning they would be held fully responsible for any fluctuations in Wei Tian shares!
After the legal notice was sent, the reporters blocking the entrance became apprehensive. Wei Tian dared to send a legal notice to the most influential publication – could their information be wrong? Was Wei Hui not ill?
If Wei Hui wasn’t ill, they would be guilty of spreading rumors and could be sued!
The reporters at the entrance began to waver. After the magazine that received the legal notice withdrew their reporters, others panicked too. The reporters who had thoroughly blocked Wei Tian’s entrance two hours ago dispersed, and peace returned to the entrance. Shiyi stood at the top floor, watching their retreating figures with heavy eyes.
“President Wei, all shareholders have arrived.”
Shiyi nodded: “Let’s go.”
Seeing her like this, Pei Tian felt sympathetic: “Are you really not going to find Third Miss?”
“I…” Shiyi closed her eyes: “I’m not going.”
“She’ll pull through.”
“She won’t let me go.”
