Morning Longing for Warmth – Chapter 69
by Little PandaSurgery
Xiaonuan, I’m sorry.
Shiyi had investigated her background during her time abroad. Back then, Wei Hui had offered to help find her family and send her away. This remained a thorn in her heart, piercing her chest, keeping her awake at night. So when she gained the ability, the first thing she did was investigate her background, wondering what her parents were like. She knew she had been abandoned and that her father died in a car accident, but didn’t know about the Wei family’s involvement. Naturally, she couldn’t believe Wei Hui’s father would do such a thing – taking someone’s heart after killing them. She inexplicably trusted Wei Hui, yet still harbored resentment.
Her father had such a connection to the Wei family, yet Wei Hui didn’t tell her, letting an outsider reveal the truth – how could she bear it?
So she acted petulant. Shiyi sighed softly; acting petulant only hurt herself. Now she wanted to see her every second, yet resented her for not telling the truth, so she kept dragging it out, not contacting her.
After lunch, Shiyi submitted all of Gu Huai’s documents, officially transferring the shares to her name. Once she returned to Jiang City, she could return them to Third Miss. Thinking of Wei Hui, Shiyi couldn’t help but smile, contemplating before sending her a message: “I’m coming back this afternoon.”
There was no reply from the other end. As Shiyi frowned, the auction house staff handed her documents: “President Wei, please review. If there are no issues, we can sign now.”
Shiyi looked down at the documents. Hearing banging outside, she turned to Pei Tian and said softly, “Let President Luo calm down.”
Pei Tian nodded: “Understood.”
Luo Zhouping kept making a scene outside, seemingly demanding an outcome. Understandably – he’d lost his land and shares, plus two billion. Back at the company, the shareholders wouldn’t let him off. With Shen Corporation withdrawing investment and the recent scandal, it was uncertain if he’d survive this crisis. In his fury, he threw a tantrum at the door. Unfortunately, no one paid attention; passersby sneered and mocked him. Having faced such ridicule for most of his life, Luo Zhouping was so angry he wanted to break down the door. Secretary Yang kept trying to pull him away but couldn’t.
Pei Tian opened the door, seeing Luo Zhouping’s gritted teeth and hateful eyes, and bowed: “President Luo, everything should end amicably. You still have five percent of Wei Tian shares. If you don’t misuse them, it’s enough for retirement.”
“Enough my ass!” Luo Zhouping cursed, “Get that b*tch Wei Nuan out here!”
Pei Tian disliked such entanglements. He frowned slightly and said, “Since President Luo won’t take the easy way, we’ll do this the hard way. Security, please escort him out.”
Two security guards in black suits immediately grabbed Luo Zhouping, dragging him away amid his furious curses. Though Luo Zhouping flailed and tried to resist, he was easily subdued. Watching his retreating figure, Pei Tian glanced back at the room. He never expected Shiyi to use such a radical approach. It was incredibly bold – if Luo Zhouping had backup plans, extra funds, or other connections, the land would have been his. Such a daring plan was something only Shiyi would attempt.
Having worked alongside Wei Hui for years, Pei Tian knew her working style – this wasn’t something she would do.
“Ah, Shiyi.”
Pei Tian shook his head with a smile – even more ruthless than Wei Hui.
In the room, Shiyi finished signing contracts with the staff. As Pei Tian entered, Shiyi said, “Assistant Pei, organize the documents. We’re leaving this afternoon.”
Pei Tian nodded: “Understood.”
Shiyi checked her phone – still no reply. She gritted her teeth and made a call, but it was cut off. Just as she was about to frown, a message appeared: “Come back. I’m at Ziyan’s getting checked. Come straight to the hospital.”
No mention of earlier matters. Shiyi’s feelings were complicated seeing this message. She bit her lip and didn’t reply.
The return journey was quick. After packing up around two, Shiyi and Pei Tian boarded the plane. With the signed contracts in hand, Shiyi first went to the company. Luo Zhouping hadn’t returned, his office still there. Shiyi’s first action was to dismiss him from his vice president position. The present executives trembled at the news, not daring to speak. Even those usually backing Luo Zhouping were sweating, fearing consequences.
Shiyi didn’t implicate them, only saying they could come and go, but if they worked at Wei Tian, they should focus their loyalty here. If anyone had ulterior motives, they’d end up like President Luo – dismissed. Nobody dared mention leaving, instead immediately flattering Shiyi excessively. Shiyi despised such talk and barely acknowledged it, simply putting the contracts in the safe before heading to the hospital.
At the hospital, she found nothing. The nurse said President Wei hadn’t come today. With a bad feeling rising in her heart, Shiyi immediately called Wei Hui. After several rings, someone answered. She called out, “Huihui?”
“It’s me,” Su Ziyan’s voice sounded unusually calm. “I’m at the Wei residence. Come back.”
Shiyi’s hands trembled as she quickly hung up. Her vision blurred – impossible, this was impossible! She had said she would wait for her, she had promised to wait!
“Drive,” Shiyi could barely contain her emotions after getting in the car, shouting, “Drive fast!”
She sat in the back seat, tears streaming down like rain. Though tears fell continuously, she bit her lips without making a sound until they turned purple. She seemed unaware of the pain, occasionally shaking her head.
No, she wouldn’t have surgery, she had promised to wait for her return. Yes, she must be waiting at home, perhaps sitting on her favorite sofa…
Shiyi couldn’t bear to imagine the scene, burying her head between her knees, crying hoarsely!
Pei Tian, driving in front, seemed to sense something. He remained silent, his eyes growing moist. He raised his hand to brush away the tears and continued driving with a serious expression. Ten minutes later, they arrived at the Wei residence. Shiyi burst out of the car, rushing to the living room, but her beloved wasn’t sitting on the sofa – only Su Ziyan was there. Shiyi slowly walked to Su Ziyan’s side and asked, “Where is she?”
Su Ziyan lowered his head in silence before trying to comfort her: “Shiyi, she…”
“I’m asking where she is!” Shiyi threw down her bag, stepping in front of Su Ziyan, grabbing his sleeve. “Where is she? Where did she go?! She promised to wait for me! Did she have surgery? The surgery, is it…”
“Shiyi.” Su Ziyan held her shoulders with both hands. Behind them, Pei Tian almost ran in, just in time to hear Su Ziyan say, “She’s… she’s in surgery.”
“Don’t panic.”
Shiyi’s expression turned desperate as she stared at Su Ziyan: “Which surgery?”
Su Ziyan opened his mouth.
“Ziyan, if she asks, tell her I’m having heart transplant surgery.”
“Keep my phone here, stall her.”
Su Ziyan shook his head – he couldn’t do it. He couldn’t stall her. Under Shiyi’s clear gaze, he couldn’t help but tell the truth. Shiyi bit her lip: “It’s Doctor Bai’s surgery, isn’t it?”
“Ah, Shiyi.” Su Ziyan sighed deeply. “If only you weren’t so clever.”
He knew about Bian Jiang’s matter and about acquiring Luo Zhouping’s shares. Wei Hui’s groundwork of nearly ten years, with Shiyi’s push, had finally shown results – the shares were recovered. He had originally blamed Shiyi for not knowing proper boundaries or priorities, but he was wrong. Sitting on the sofa earlier, he had contemplated whether to lie to her, but there was no point – he couldn’t deceive Shiyi.
He couldn’t fool her; Shiyi was too smart, too sensitive about matters concerning Wei Hui. With just a little thought, she could deduce everything.
“How could she do this?” Shiyi’s heart twisted like a knife, her face turning deathly pale, lips trembling. “She said she’d wait for me to return before having surgery!”
“She lied to me again!”
“Because you were at the auction then,” Su Ziyan couldn’t help saying. “Her heart stopped suddenly. I was preparing for transplant surgery when Doctor Bai sent word about new research findings, asking if she’d like to try.”
“She agreed.” Shiyi nodded while crying. “She agreed, but what about me? What am I supposed to do? What if she fails? What will I do? I haven’t even told her I got her shares back, I won the land auction too. Everything she asked me to do, I accomplished it all. Why couldn’t she just wait for me?”
Shiyi became hysterical. Wei Hui’s absence and surgery pushed her past her limits, stripping away her rationality, driving her almost mad: “I don’t care, give her back to me…”
She collapsed onto the floor, sobbing. Both Su Ziyan and Pei Tian couldn’t bear to watch. Hearing her blood-curdling cries, even the most stone-hearted would tear up. Su Ziyan hadn’t forgotten his responsibility; with trembling hands, he took out a document folder from behind the sofa: “Look at this.”
Shiyi’s vision was blurry as she took the folder like a walking corpse, her tears falling onto it, creating splashes of water.
“This is the agreement between your father and the Wei family. Your father volunteered.”
With trembling fingers, Shiyi pulled out the agreement, but the text was too blurry – she couldn’t read anything. Seeing her state, Su Ziyan steeled his heart and took out another document folder: “This is her will.”
Will.
Shiyi coughed dryly twice, her tears now flowing uncontrollably. Her entire body tensed, her head feeling like it would split open, her heart being slowly tortured. The pain was so intense she couldn’t hold the so-called will. ‘Pa!’ The thick folder fell to the ground. Shiyi reached for it, but her fingertips brushed past it several times, unable to pick it up. She held her breath as she heard Su Ziyan say: “This letter is what she left for you.”
The living room was so quiet that Shiyi could clearly hear her own heartbeat – peng peng peng!
She lifted her eyes to look at Su Ziyan, taking the envelope he handed her. On the cover was written: “To Wei Nuan, personally.”
Shiyi carefully and reverently opened the envelope. Inside was just one message.
“Xiaonuan:
If I can return, I owe you an apology. If I cannot, please live well.
Xiaonuan.”
Xiaonuan – she had always called her Shiyi, never Xiaonuan. What did it mean that she called her Xiaonuan now? Was it affirming her identity in the Wei family? Emphasizing that she was Wei Nuan? Was it because she knew she – wouldn’t return?
Shiyi clutched the envelope, feeling as if her heart was being carved out. The pain made her shudder, her nerves suddenly snapping, her tense body suddenly going slack. She coughed twice, tasting sweetness in her throat, and blood burst forth! It sprayed onto the white letter paper, the color vivid!
