Morning Longing for Warmth – Chapter 61
by Little PandaConcealment
From now on, don’t hide anything from me.
Wei Hui got into a car accident before Shiyi could return.
Before Shiyi could exit Qimao, she received a call from Pei Tian. Her phone fell to the ground with a thud, striking heavily at her heart. Under the blazing sun, a chill ran through her entire body, bone-deep, making her shiver uncontrollably. Trembling, she picked up the phone from the ground and held it to her ear: “What did you say?”
There was a moment of silence on Pei Tian’s end before he slowly said: “Third Miss got into a car accident on her way to a business meeting. She’s currently being treated at Dr. Su’s hospital.”
A knife-twisting pain seized her heart, countless sharp pains pierced through Shiyi’s heart and shot straight into her brain. Her hand holding the phone trembled, barely able to grip the light device. Standing under the scorching sun, she gritted her teeth and asked: “When did this happen?”
Pei Tian lowered his head: “Half an hour ago.”
Half an hour ago?
Half an hour ago!
Just half an hour ago, she had smiled gently and said, “Alright, I’ll wait for your return.”
Was this how she was meant to wait?
She knew she could never harm a single hair on her body, knew she couldn’t bear to touch her, was even afraid to embrace her too tightly, let alone hurt her legs. She knew, she knew everything.
So she chose this way?
Standing at Qimao Company’s entrance, Shiyi’s straight back suddenly curved, and she collapsed to the ground, hugging her knees and breaking into loud sobs!
Du Yuehan walked out of the company and saw Shiyi’s dejected state. He took two steps forward, bent down and called out: “Shiyi?”
Shiyi looked up at him, her blurry eyes filled with tears, the corners of her eyes crimson red. As the heart-piercing pain subsided, she slowly got up from the ground and gave a slight nod to Du Yuehan standing beside her: “President Du.”
Du Yuehan asked in confusion: “What happened?”
Shiyi swallowed, her hands tightly clenched, fingertips pressing against the hard shell of her phone. The bone-chilling pain struck again as she forced a smile: “Nothing.”
“I’m leaving first.”
She left Qimao without looking back, while Du Yuehan furrowed his brows, watching her retreating figure.
It was an hour later when Shiyi arrived at the hospital. She lingered outside the main entrance for a long time, afraid to go in, terrified of hearing Su Ziyan tell her, “I’m sorry, we did our best.”
She had imagined ten thousand possibilities of losing Wei Hui, but when reality might actually come true, she still inevitably tried to escape. She was afraid.
She didn’t want to face it.
Shiyi stared at the hospital entrance when her phone suddenly rang. Her trembling right hand slowly picked up the phone, seeing the name displayed on the screen.
——Huihui.
She ran into the hospital!
When Wei Hui woke up and didn’t see Shiyi, she found it strange and turned to ask: “Have you contacted Shiyi?”
She knew Shiyi would never hurt her. The reason she said that was just to give her an early warning, but she hadn’t expected this warning would have such a strong effect, nearly causing Shiyi to break down.
Pei Tian glanced at his watch: “I contacted Shiyi an hour ago.”
Wei Hui had just furrowed her delicate brows and asked Pei Tian to bring her phone. Just as she was about to dial, hurried footsteps came from outside the ward. The door opened, and Shiyi stood there panting. Before Wei Hui could raise her hand to dismiss Pei Tian, Shiyi rushed in and embraced her without hesitation.
“Huihui.” Shiyi’s voice was choked with tears: “How could you do this?”
“How dare you do this?”
“Don’t you know how dangerous this was!”
“Don’t you know I almost lost you!”
A series of rebukes burst from Shiyi’s mouth. Pei Tian watched the angry Shiyi in astonishment; this was the first time he had ever seen anyone scold Third Miss. What surprised him even more was that Third Miss didn’t get angry, but instead said in a soft voice: “I’m sorry.”
He stood in place, seeing Wei Hui’s hand lift slightly on the hospital bed. He nodded and retreated from the ward, faintly hearing Shiyi’s continued scolding.
Shiyi was angry, furious, but also terrified and helpless.
In the struggle against time, she never had any chance of winning. Every extra second she could spend with Wei Hui was heaven’s grace. She never got angry without reason, but this time, she was truly frightened.
Wei Hui also knew she had been too rash, too reckless this time, but there was no other way, so she let Shiyi vent her fearful emotions. She gently patted Shiyi’s back, feeling cold sweat, and Wei Hui curled her fingers, whispering near Shiyi’s ear: “I’m sorry.”
“I’m sorry, Shiyi, I’m sorry.”
Shiyi tightly gripped Wei Hui’s shoulders, her body still trembling, her hands shaking as they held Wei Hui. Her eyes were red, brimming with tears as she bit her lip and said: “I don’t want to hear your apologies.”
Wei Hui opened her mouth but lost her voice. Only Shiyi’s sobbing could be heard in the ward. After a while, Su Ziyan knocked and came in for an examination. Seeing the two like this, he didn’t know what to say, but called out before leaving: “Shiyi, come out with me for a moment.”
Shiyi reluctantly let go of Wei Hui and followed Su Ziyan out of the ward.
“I know you’re upset, but in the late stages, she faces the risk of cardiac arrest at any time. I told you all this before you two started your relationship.”
“Actually, she’s been struggling for a while but didn’t tell you because she was worried. After the New Year, she had surgery…”
Shiyi tensed up, looking at Su Ziyan in disbelief: “What did you say?”
Su Ziyan looked at the child who once only reached his shoulder but now stood at eye level with him. Without hesitation, he continued: “Don’t worry, she’s pulled through. The fact that she’s able to pull through now, the most crucial factor is you.”
He chuckled at this point: “I never imagined there’d be a day when she’d consider you more important than Wei Tian.”
Shiyi bit her lip, her body rigid, forcing herself to ask: “Has her condition worsened again?”
Su Ziyan nodded: “Yes. I don’t want to hide it from you, and Huihui wouldn’t hide it either. If this continues, the heart transplant surgery will need to be done sooner. You can’t break down now, you’re her support. When Huihui sent you abroad to study, it wasn’t in hopes that you’d protect the Wei family or Wei Tian, she just hoped that after she’s gone, you could build your own sky.”
“Shiyi, I need you to not only hold up your own sky but also Huihui’s sky.”
Shiyi gritted her teeth: “I understand.”
Su Ziyan patted her shoulder: “Stay strong.”
Shiyi’s nose stung, her throat choked, her vision blurry. She was barely over twenty, had only enjoyed two years of happy life with Wei Hui, had only just found the light that illuminated her life, and now heaven was saying no, this light had no wick left and could be taken away at any moment, like some cruel joke.
But this joke, from beginning to end, she had always known about.
Shiyi said solemnly: “Dr. Su, don’t worry, I know what to do.”
Seeing her composure, Su Ziyan nodded: “It must be hard.”
Shiyi smiled bitterly: “Not as hard as it is for her.”
Su Ziyan watched tears slide down her cheeks while she bit back any sound of sobbing. His heart ached as he said sideways: “Go keep her company. She’s very weak now and needs rest. Don’t let her talk too much.”
“Alright.” Each response came like she was a robot, only able to repeat: alright, I understand, I know. Su Ziyan couldn’t bear to see her like this, and as he turned away, tears welled up in his eyes. He took a breath: “Go in.”
Shiyi wiped away her tears with her fingertips and pushed open the door with a faint smile on her lips. She called out: “Huihui.”
Wei Hui lifted her eyelids, taking in her expression completely, and said: “Ziyan told you everything?”
Unlike her earlier outburst, Shiyi wasn’t shouting anymore. She just nodded slightly and asked: “Are you hungry? Should I ask Aunt Liu to bring some rice porridge? Or would you like some water?”
As she spoke, she walked to the water dispenser, poured half a glass of warm water, went to Wei Hui’s side, and inserted a straw. Wei Hui took a sip and said: “I told him not to tell you.”
“I know everything.” Shiyi seemed to mature instantly, the person who had been yelling earlier now gone. She stood before Wei Hui with composure, placing the cup on the bedside table and lowering her head: “I know your health is getting worse, I know you had surgery after New Year’s, I know you didn’t tell me because you were worried about me.”
“But Huihui, I want you to know that you’re the only person in this world I’m close to and care about. I don’t want to miss anything about you, whether good or bad. Even for surgery, I want to sit outside the door, waiting for you to return.”
Wei Hui turned to look at Shiyi, squinting her phoenix eyes against the glaring sunlight. Shiyi met her clear eyes and said: “So next time anything happens, I hope you won’t hide it from me.”
“Okay?”
Wei Hui’s hands gripped the corner of her blanket, her lips moved, but before she could speak, there was a knock on the door, followed by Pei Tian’s voice: “Third Miss.”
“Come in.”
The ward door opened, and Pei Tian entered, first glancing at Shiyi, then at Wei Hui, before lowering his head and saying: “Third Miss, Luo Zhouping knows about the land in Huaicheng, and he wants to participate in the bidding.”
Wei Hui’s expression changed: “What?”
“How did he find out?”
Pei Tian replied without hesitation: “Assistant Qiao gave him the information.”
Wei Hui’s expression turned cold, her phoenix eyes growing stern: “Does Mr. Du know about this?”
Pei Tian nodded: “Yes, he’s already spoken with Assistant Qiao, but Luo Zhouping…”
Luo Zhouping’s branch company has been developing rapidly these two years. If he gets this information, he would certainly spare no expense to acquire this piece of land. Even if he resells it, the profit would be considerable. Moreover, since no one knows about this information yet, the bidding price wouldn’t be driven up. As Wei Hui was weighing her options, Shiyi said: “I’ll take up the position now.”
Wei Hui raised her eyes: “What?”
Shiyi forced a smile at her, speaking softly: “You’re not well right now, and company affairs can’t be left unmanaged. If I take the position now, though it’s not entirely proper, Luo Zhouping will be too busy with the Huaicheng land to make much of it. Everything else can wait until I become Vice President.”
Wei Hui’s delicate brows furrowed: “But you’re not familiar enough with the company’s internal workings.”
Shiyi smiled at her: “Don’t I have you?”
“What I don’t know or can’t do, you can teach me.”
Hearing this, Wei Hui’s tightly knitted brows relaxed slightly. She nodded: “That’s fine.”
She turned to Pei Tian: “Pei Tian, arrange a board meeting for the day after tomorrow.”
Pei Tian nodded: “Understood.”
As he prepared to leave, Shiyi suddenly called out: “Assistant Pei.”
Pei Tian paused and turned immediately: “Does Miss Shiyi need anything else?”
Shiyi nodded, looking at Wei Hui, thinking for a few seconds before saying: “Help me contact someone.”
Pei Tian asked puzzled: “Please tell me who.”
Shiyi’s gaze was determined: “Help me contact Shen Hao.”
