Morning Longing for Warmth – Chapter 28
by Little PandaEmbrace
Shiyi’s heart exploded.
Wei Hui was notified by Pei Tian to come. Recently, Wei Hui had been frequently dealing with the Du family regarding abandoned construction projects, and he didn’t want any accidents to happen, so he notified Wei Hui.
When Shiyi saw the person appearing at the door, she was momentarily dazed, but quickly recovered and walked to her side, calling out: “Third Miss.”
Wei Hui had just gotten out of the car, with howling cold wind behind her, her voice carrying a touch of coldness: “What’s going on?”
Shiyi said in a low voice: “Shiβer is Miss Du’s dog.”
Wei Hui’s brows furrowed slightly as she looked toward Du Yuehan and the doctor in a white coat standing together in the distance, along with Pei Tian standing to the side. Her sharp eyes were too piercing, and Du Yuming was the first to give in, voluntarily admitting: “It’s just a misunderstanding.”
Though the doctor didn’t know Wei Hui’s background, seeing her imposing presence showed she was no ordinary person, and immediately agreed: “Yes, yes, yes, it’s all a misunderstanding.”
“I’ll examine Sisi first,” said the doctor, who couldn’t bear the oppressive atmosphere, while holding the dog’s leash, to Du Yuming: “You all wait outside.”
Du Yuming nodded, and the receptionist quickly led them to the back rest area.
The rest area was quite spacious, and the receptionist poured warm water for everyone. Wei Hui didn’t take any, she just sat on the sofa and said to Shiyi: “Since it’s a misunderstanding, let’s return the dog to Miss Du.”
Shiyi lifted her head, hands gripping the edges of the water cup, smiled: “Alright.”
Her tone showed no reluctance, but there was some melancholy in her eyes. Wei Hui remembered the scene of her sneaking out in the pouring rain that night just to shelter the dog, and remained silent.
Du Yuming came over: “Shiyi, thank you.”
She had drunk quite a bit, was still dizzy when she first arrived, but was now mostly sober. Shiyi shook her head in response: “It’s nothing.”
“That won’t do. Thanks should be given when due. Let’s do this – consider that I owe you a favor, you can come to me if you need anything in the future.”
“Miss Du, I…” Shiyi’s voice was interrupted by Wei Hui: “Then we’ll thank Miss Du first.”
“Shiyi, thank Miss Du.”
Shiyi looked at her somewhat dazedly, but still obediently followed along: “Thank you, Miss Du.”
Du Yuming smiled: “Don’t mention it.”
Several people sat idly in the rest area. Shiyi, worried about delaying Wei Hui’s work, took the initiative to say: “Third Miss, why don’t you go to the company first? There’s nothing much here, I can go back by myself.”
“How could that be? I’ll take you,” Du Yuming interjected: “Besides, you have nothing to do later, we can go for a walk before heading back, what do you say?”
Clearly treating her as a friend, Shiyi wasn’t as resistant as before, and said softly: “Won’t that be too much trouble for you?”
Du Yuming raised her hand: “Not troublesome at all.”
Listening to their exchange, Wei Hui glanced sideways at Shiyi, seeing her talk to others like a normal child, her manner of speaking and behavior no longer timid, her demeanor more relaxed and a bit more confident. She lowered her eyes and didn’t say anything about leaving.
Since Wei Hui wasn’t leaving, Shiyi didn’t dare rush her anymore. Soon, the doctor in the white coat came knocking with the dog, and after giving Du Yuming some instructions, said: “Don’t lose it again this time.”
Du Yuming hugged the dog’s neck, showing indescribable affection, her tone sweet: “I won’t, I won’t. I’d rather lose myself than lose it again.”
The dog lifted its head to lick Du Yuming’s cheeks, its front paws constantly trying to climb on her. Unlike when it was with Shiyi, it was especially playful and familiar with Du Yuming.
Du Yuming called out “Sisi” once, and the dog excitedly circled around her. Watching this scene, Shiyi’s eyes suddenly rimmed with red.
Wei Hui stood beside her and said in a slightly lower voice: “Are you reluctant to part with it?”
Shiyi turned to look, seeing Wei Hui staring steadily at the person and dog before them, her profile tense, gaze cold and clear, her sharp eyes unchanged. She shook her head and said: “No, I’m happy for them.”
Wei Hui tilted her head: “Happy about what?”
Shiyi thought for a moment and said: “Happy that Shiβer is different from me, it has family.”
After saying this, she showed a relieved smile. The earlier uncomfortable feelings dissipated after seeing the dog’s interaction with Du Yuming. Wei Hui heard her words and lost focus for a few seconds, Su Ziyan’s words echoing in her ears.
“Have you thought about what to do with Shiyi?”
“This is her child, do you think she won’t miss it?”
Wei Hui let out a muffled cough, feeling dizzy. Shiyi, seeing her pale complexion, immediately supported her body. Wei Hui’s vision only went black for two seconds before returning to normal, fortunately Shiyi provided support in time, preventing her from losing composure.
Behind them, Pei Tian, who was about to step forward, stopped and took two steps back.
Leaving the pet shop, Shiyi was very worried about Wei Hui’s health, frequently looking at her. In the sunlight, Wei Hui’s face was only slightly pale, otherwise no different from usual. When getting in the car, Du Yuming said: “Is President Wei going to the company? Then I can take Shiyi back?”
Shiyi looked at Wei Hui expectantly. Having just witnessed her illness, she actually wanted to go with her, but having already promised Du Yuming, she couldn’t go back on her word, so she could only look at Wei Hui.
Wei Hui met her clear eyes, paused for a moment and said: “I happen to be going back to get some documents, Shiyi can come back with me, no need to trouble Miss Du.”
Du Yuming pursed her lips: “Stingy.”
Hearing these words, Shiyi lowered her eyes, then heard Du Yuming say: “Well then, see you next time. Sisi, say goodbye to Auntie Shiyi!”
The dog barked twice at Shiyi, and Shiyi rubbed its head, saying: “Goodbye.”
Soon she and Wei Hui got in the car. Before leaving, she saw Du Yuming holding the dog’s leash in the rearview mirror. When the car started moving, the dog suddenly got up and ran forward, following behind the car. Shiyi immediately opened the window, looked back, and saw Shiβer barking at her. She smiled and muttered softly: “Goodbye.”
As she closed the window, Wei Hui coughed twice, and Shiyi quickly gathered herself and called out: “Third Miss, are you alright?”
Wei Hui shook her head: “It’s nothing.”
Shiyi was still worried: “Should I accompany you to see Dr. Su? Would that be okay?”
“No need.” Wei Hui rejected without hesitation: “Just need some rest.”
Seeing this, Shiyi couldn’t say anything more. The two sat in the back seat with Wei Hui’s bag between them. The car drove slowly on the road, scenery passing by the window. Wei Hui asked: “Did you like that dog very much?”
Shiyi clasped her hands together and nodded: “Yes.”
After speaking, she thought of the scene at the pet shop and couldn’t help asking: “Third Miss, did you keep dogs before?”
Wei Hui’s face showed no impatience as she nodded slightly: “Mm.”
Seeing her normal expression, Shiyi probed further: “Then why did you give it away?”
Wei Hui turned her head to look at her once, and replied: “Because I loved it very much.”
“If you loved it, why…” As Shiyi spoke, she looked at Wei Hui, seeing her looking out the window, sunlight falling on her facial features, adding a touch of softness. Her long, curled eyelashes cast shadows on her face. Shiyi couldn’t see her eyes, but she thought they probably weren’t as sharp as before.
Third Miss could also have such a side, Shiyi was moved by the sight, embedding this scene deep in her heart. When she came back to her senses, Wei Hui had already closed her eyes to rest.
Arriving at the Wei Mansion, Wei Hui got out of the car first. Aunt Liu stared into the car and asked Shiyi: “Where’s Shiβer?”
After these few days together, Shiyi and Aunt Liu had become familiar with each other, so she replied: “Gave it away.”
Aunt Liu was surprised, and Shiyi smiled: “I’m kidding.”
Wei Hui turned her head and saw this child’s gentle, beautiful smile. Shiyi looked very pretty when she smiled, but she didn’t smile often. The most Wei Hui usually saw was just a slight curl of her lips, a shy smile. To see her smile like this with light in her eyes was truly rare. She looked at her for a few more moments, then turned and left the courtyard.
Back in the study, she took a document and said to Pei Tian: “Take this to President Du.”
Pei Tian nodded: “Do you want to rest for a while?”
Wei Hui stood by the window: “No need, go quickly.”
Pei Tian wanted to say a few more words of concern, but he knew Wei Hui’s temperament – she wouldn’t yield to either soft or hard approaches. Helplessly, he could only take the documents and leave the Wei Mansion. In the courtyard, Shiyi sat alone on the long bench, cold wind whimpering past her, her long hair showing teeth and brandishing claws behind her [meaning: wild]. Aunt Liu looked at her a few times, walked over and said: “Young Miss, go inside to rest, it’s cold outside.”
Shiyi rubbed her hands and smiled: “Okay.”
Returning to the living room, she didn’t see Wei Hui. She looked up and saw the study door was open. Wei Hui rarely worked at home, her schedule was very regular – usually after coming home she would have dinner, then take a walk nearby, then return to wash up and sleep, her routine like that of a retired elderly person. Shiyi stood in the living room and saw Aunt Liu carrying a bowl of ginger soup. She said to Shiyi: “Young Miss, yours is on the dining table, drink it when it cools down. I’ll take this to Third Miss first.”
Seeing this, Shiyi called out to stop her: “Aunt Liu, let me take it.”
Aunt Liu looked at her, then glanced upstairs, understanding: “Alright.”
Shiyi carried the ginger soup up the stairs. Standing at the doorway, she looked down at her features reflected in the soup. It was strange – when she first came to the Wei Mansion, she wanted nothing more than to avoid Wei Hui, staying as far away as possible, preferably not letting her notice her existence at all. Now, not only did she not want to hide, but she sought opportunities to be near her. It wasn’t that she wanted anything, just that seeing Wei Hui somehow made her feel inexplicably at ease.
Shiyi found this change in her heart strange but didn’t analyze it deeply. She just stood at the doorway with the ginger soup and said softly: “Third Miss.”
Wei Hui didn’t lift her head: “Come in.”
After speaking, she coughed twice. Shiyi watched her with concern and asked: “Are you alright?”
Wei Hui tried to wave her hand but caught her breath suddenly, leading to another bout of intense coughing. Her hand trembled slightly in mid-air. Shiyi stood beside her, momentarily unsure what to do, finally gathering courage to pat her back, repeatedly asking: “Third Miss, do you need medicine? I’ll go get it.”
Just as Shiyi was about to leave, her wrist was grabbed from behind, gripped very tightly, causing her to slightly furrow her brows in pain, though she didn’t make a sound.
“No need.” After a long while, Wei Hui finally steadied her breathing. Her hatred of winter wasn’t without reason – this weather made it easy to catch colds, and her constitution was easily affected, so every winter, minor illnesses hardly left her side.
Shiyi looked down at Wei Hui. Despite coughing like that, her face showed no redness, just a deathly pale, her eyes glistening with moisture, her whole person lacking vitality, showing a sickly weakness. Shiyi’s heart inexplicably ached, and she said softly: “You should rest for a while.”
Wei Hui was very dizzy from the intense coughing but still wanted to persist. Tomorrow was the shareholders’ meeting, and nothing could go wrong, so she was checking the proposals. Shiyi saw her still sitting upright and gritted her teeth: “If you won’t rest, at least drink this bowl of ginger soup.”
Just as she finished speaking, a voice came from the door: “Third Miss, Young Miss.”
Shiyi hadn’t closed the door when she came in, and Aunt Liu was standing directly at the doorway, looking in. Wei Hui quickly pulled Shiyi into her embrace, sitting her on her lap and burying her face in Shiyi’s chest, using the opportunity to hide her pale complexion. Shiyi felt her arms wrapped tightly around her waist, long hair tickling her chin. Shiyi lowered her head, her nose full of shampoo fragrance, holding something soft, with a head nuzzling against her chest. She placed her hands uncertainly on Wei Hui’s shoulders, her face flushing red, her heart suddenly exploding!
