Little Alpaca – Chapter 180
by Little PandaVolume 5: Tribulation of All Beings
The Mortal Realm’s Tribulation, I Have a Plan.
The puddle of saliva at the door was eventually cleaned up by You Yan.
After all, alpaca spit stinks. It really had to be dealt with.
As for Yi Qiu, who had spat that puddle, she was first held down by You Yan to have her mouth wiped for a long time, then dragged off to have her feet washed. Only after confirming she was clean from head to toe did she finally receive today’s “permission to get on the bed.”
You Yan didn’t scold her as she had expected. Instead, after their meal, she seriously considered how to handle this situation.
This was how it went.
You Yan: “The way you spit, no amount of spiritual energy would be enough.”
Yi Qiu: “Then what am I supposed to do?”
You Yan: “Hold it in.”
Yi Qiu: “I can’t! It’s my mouth that opens on its own!”
And so, Yi Qiu successfully received an extremely luxurious “silence package.”1
Unlike before, this silence package was exclusive to cultivation—not only could she not speak human words, but she also couldn’t open her mouth.
That way, she wouldn’t be able to spit, right?
Just as you’d expect from the bird woman. Her way of handling things was just so simple and crude.
Just like that, Yi Qiu spent the afternoon continuing her cultivation while silenced… or to be precise, with her mouth sealed.2
I have to say, the System’s suggestion was indeed a good one. Once she found the feeling of gathering spiritual energy3 by spitting, her control over the spiritual energy in her body gradually became more adept.
But You Yan had said to gather spiritual energy in her heart-meridian,4 and she found it very difficult to concentrate all of it to that single point.
Compared to her heart-meridian, it was much easier to gather the spiritual energy in her throat, which was why she couldn’t hold it back at noon.
However, You Yan said this couldn’t be rushed and definitely had to be practiced slowly, so Yi Qiu felt a little more at ease.
Yi Qiu hadn’t thought much of it when she read novels before, but now that she had experienced it herself, she realized cultivation was truly not an easy matter. If it weren’t for the blood condensation pearl5 You Yan had given her, she definitely wouldn’t have been able to transform into a human form for hundreds of years.
The good thing was, with each passing day of diligent practice, she could gradually gather more and more spiritual energy in her heart-meridian.
Every time she felt she had gathered enough spiritual energy, she would follow You Yan’s instructions and try her best to picture her human form in her mind. But after many attempts, not a single one had been successful.
During these days, You Yan would check her cultivation progress every night and would always offer a word of praise: “Not bad.”
Yi Qiu was used to being put down by You Yan, so hearing praise from her now suddenly felt a little strange. She seriously suspected again and again that You Yan was being sarcastic.
After all, the little alpaca had long since realized the truth that you had to take whatever the bird woman said as its opposite.
The days passed one by one, and in the blink of an eye, winter snow was falling at the Xianlu Sect.
The first heavy snow of winter fell quietly in the dead of night.
The moment Yi Qiu woke up and pushed open the tightly shut doors and windows, she saw the vast, white mountain scenery outside.
Braving the cold wind, she walked dazedly out of the room with its burning charcoal fire and stood stunned outside the guest house, her eyes gazing at the distant snowscape, so completely different from Kunlun’s.
Whether in a dream or out of it, she thought, to experience two winters in such a short time is a pretty magical experience. Even though I’m a demon now, this might be a once-in-a-lifetime thing, right?
She tentatively extended one of her fore-hooves6 and made a small print in the fresh, unswept snow by the door. Just as she was about to go out and play in the snow, she remembered the first time she had gotten sick after coming to this world.
After a brief hesitation, she obediently pulled her hoof back inside. A moment later, a sudden idea struck her, and she tried to channel her spiritual energy to resist the severe cold.
She didn’t know if it was successful or just a psychological effect, but after that small attempt, she really did feel less cold.
The next second, she leaped outside, cheering joyfully.
She had thought that in this life, she would only ever like the internet, listening to music, and reading novels.
But now, she liked the chirping of cicadas in summer, the falling leaves in autumn, and even more, the white snow of winter.
She liked it here. She liked every single ordinary day and night spent with You Yan.
If this world could truly welcome the spring, she would definitely like that day of renewal when all things came back to life.
With You Yan away, Yi Qiu wanted to build a small snowman by herself.
But her little hooves couldn’t pack the snow at all. After struggling for a long time, she only managed to make a flat lump of snow covered in hoof prints.
Just then, You Yan returned with breakfast she had bought from the foot of the mountain. Seeing Yi Qiu playing in the snow outside, she dragged her into the house without a second word.
“It’s so cold, aren’t you afraid of catching a chill?” You Yan frowned, her eyes full of worry.
“I have spiritual energy protecting my body!”7 Yi Qiu said, sidling up to You Yan. She stomped her fore-hoof and said earnestly, “If you don’t believe me, feel my hands. They’re warm!”
You Yan was silent for a moment before she couldn’t help but crouch down and take hold of the two little hooves Yi Qiu had been playing in the snow with. She found that they were indeed very warm, and only then did she breathe a sigh of relief.
After a short silence, she asked softly, “When did you learn to do this?”
“Just today! I became talented through self-study!”8 Yi Qiu raised her head proudly and asked in return, “Impressive, right?”
“Look at you, so pleased with yourself.” You Yan ruffled Yi Qiu’s fluffy head. “I told you long ago, this is a basic skill.”
“I don’t care, I know how to do it now,” Yi Qiu said, rubbing against You Yan’s arm. “After breakfast, can we build a snowman?”
“I don’t know how,” You Yan said. “It’s not like you haven’t seen my attempts.”
“No need for anything difficult this time, just a snowman. A regular snowman will be fine,” Yi Qiu said, bumping You Yan’s arm with her head again.
“Fine, as you wish,” You Yan said, placing all the breakfast she had bought on the table.
That day, a tall, large snowman appeared at the entrance of the secluded guest house in the Xianlu Sect.
The snowman had large stone eyes and a chili pepper nose. Its body was wide and big, with a broom in its left hand and a large ladle in its right. A piece of cloth was even wrapped around its neck as a scarf.
This snowman was neither good-looking nor ugly. In Yi Qiu’s heart, it could already be considered the pinnacle of You Yan’s achievements on the path of “handicrafts.”
It was a pity that there were no cameras or phones in ancient times; otherwise, Yi Qiu really would have wanted to take a picture of it.
After building the snowman, Yi Qiu followed You Yan into the house. Before starting her cultivation for the day, she conscientiously went to You Yan to receive her two-hour silence grand gift package.9
Recently, You Yan’s injuries seemed to have healed quite a bit. Yi Qiu could clearly feel that the color was returning day by day to that long-pale face.
And from afar, news of Jiang Yuyao arrived.
Just as You Yan had expected, their group had hit a wall everywhere they went. Even with the token of trust10 from the Three Venerables,11 almost no one would believe their words.
But they wouldn’t give up on persuading the various immortal sects,12 because even if only a few people were half-convinced and willing to make some small preparations, it would be for the best.
Yi Qiu frowned as she read this.
In the original work, Little Bird Coo Coo Fly had once written that every autumn, merchants would buy up new grain at low prices and store it in their warehouses. Then, when the next spring came, they would sell it at a relatively high price. This was a common situation everywhere.
This situation brought endless panic to everyone when spring arrived, but nothing grew, and even spring plowing13 couldn’t be carried out.
For a time, the rich began to hoard grain,14 and merchants took the opportunity to drive the price of grain so high that many common people could only look on helplessly. This caused grievances to fill the roads15 everywhere.
It would have been one thing if it were only for a short time, but as time went on, all sorts of other problems began to arise.
What those who couldn’t even fill their stomachs would do was something no one could predict.
Will the tragic scenes from the novel—of selling one’s children for grain, or even people eating people—really play out in this world?
“You’re afraid.”
“I… I am afraid.” I don’t think I could bear to see a world like that, Yi Qiu thought.
She knew that no matter what the world became, You Yan would protect her. No matter how many people starved to death on the roadside, You Yan would never let her miss a meal.
But she still didn’t want to see a world like that.
“Do you believe the Wood God would abandon the common people?”
“I…”
“She couldn’t even bring herself to abandon the dying demon right in front of her,” You Yan said.
“But, but in the novel…” the little alpaca said, her ears drooping. “In the novel, she did.”
“That story cannot be taken as fact,” You Yan said softly. “Perhaps it won’t be long before she returns. Before that, we can do something first.”
“What can we do?” Yi Qiu couldn’t help but look up, craning her neck to ask.
You Yan considered for a moment, then said, “There’s no rush. We’ll wait until you’ve cultivated your human form.”
Yi Qiu froze, tilting her head. “But, but that’ll still be a while. Will there be enough time?”
“Winter isn’t even over yet. What could we possibly do now?” You Yan said with a laugh. “Are we supposed to go back to the Demon Realm, forcibly drag Chao Yun back before spring arrives in the mortal realm, and then figure out a way to cleanse her of the Demon Heart?”16
“…” That… seemed to make sense.
You Yan ruffled Yi Qiu’s head and said softly, “Regarding the mortal realm’s tribulation,17 I have a plan…”
Yi Qiu’s eyes lit up. “You have a plan?”
You Yan nodded and smiled. “But I’m not enough on my own. I’ll need friends to help.”
“Friends?” Yi Qiu was surprised for a moment, then immediately understood.
“Fuzhu18 and Huodou19 will come here before spring. Jiang Yuyao and Luo Mingyuan will also be back by then.”
Of course. You Yan had planned for everything.
This time, she had even included “friends” and was no longer acting all alone.
This feeling of winning just by lying down is so reassuring.
