Volume One: The Old Corpse in the Mountain Village

    Karma

    Her curse, an eternal curse!

    Hong Kong Central Hospital.

Ning Lan had a black cat stuffed in her backpack, its furry head peeking out, and Shen Qingyou giggled while patting its head, saying, β€œLittle kitty, don’t be naughty.”

Officer Shen looked quite adorable while playing with the cat.

When they arrived at the hospital and asked the nurse, the receptionist pointed to another hospital building and said, β€œWei Jinye you mentioned has been moved to the VIP ward, his condition is quite serious.”

The two followed the directional signs above, walking from Building A to Building B, turning through several corridors until they found Wei Jinbao in one of the VIP wards.

Through the glass door, Ning Lan saw Xu Sanduo kneeling at Wei Jinbao’s bedside.

β€œInteresting. What act is Xu Sanduo putting on?” Ning Lan muttered.

Shen Qingyou frowned, equally puzzled by Xu Sanduo’s behavior, and said, β€œLet’s go in and see.”

As soon as they quietly entered, they found Xu Sanduo crying uncontrollably.

While long illness drives away filial children, Xu Sanduo had become Wei Jinbao’s most loyal follower.

Wei Jinbao had been severely tormented by the fierce ghost Akita Kyoko, his eyes rolled back white and foaming at the mouth when he was rushed to the hospital.

He had a respirator in his mouth, which was slightly open, with IV needles in his arm and a nutrition drip hanging above his head.

The only person he could trust now was Xu Sanduo, the security team captain, who stood beside him sobbing like a deeply filial child.

It was Xu Sanduo who first found Wei Jinbao collapsed in the room, with his mouth filled with long hair and terror in his eyes.

Wei Jinbao reached out to him, unable to make a sound from his mouth.

The hair had wrapped around his body like seaweed.

Only then did Xu Sanduo react, rushing forward to help Wei Jinbao catch his breath and pull out the hair.

Xu Sanduo used too much force, slapping Wei Jinbao’s back without restraint. Wei Jinbao’s mouth seemed choked, chewing on hair, his legs kicking like a pellet drum [or: rattle drum].

The result was that the more he pulled the hair, the more there was.

A horrifying scene unfolded as blood came out with the black hair he held in both hands…

The blood sprayed out in a radiating pattern toward his eyes.

Xu Sanduo remembered how the blood-soaked hair was violently pulled from Wei Jinbao’s abdomen.

Wei Jinye’s body jerked up with a β€œthud,” shuddered twice, then went still.

Xu Sanduo held out his hands, covered in countless spots of blood, which had even splattered onto his cheeks and eyelids.

β€œAh… my eyes!” Xu Sanduo gasped breathlessly.

Xu Sanduo frantically pulled out his dageda [early mobile phone popular in the 1990s] from his pocket and dialed the hospital’s number.

    dageda

β€œWei Jinye, you can’t leave us, the security brothers at Tong Lau still depend on you to live…” Xu Sanduo wailed desperately to Wei Jinbao.

Xu Sanduo saw the hospital nurses arrive, and they all came to help remove the hair from Wei Jinbao’s mouth.

They pulled at the python-thick hair one after another, like pulling radishes from the ground.

Xu Sanduo steeled himself and said, β€œNurses, why don’t you find some large shears to cut this hair?”

β€œWe’ll give him some anesthesia first to sedate him. You go quickly find the tools,” several nurses said as they held down the bleeding Wei Jinbao, the situation momentarily out of control.

They saw blood gushing from his ears, mouth, and even lower parts, spreading across the floor like blooming mantuoluo [datura flower] flowers, swaying in various patterns.

Xu Sanduo gritted his teeth and said, β€œI’ll go to the warehouse to find some tools.”

This was the most effective solution for now. Xu Sanduo jogged back to the first-floor security office and rummaged through the warehouse until he found a usable pair of shears.

The shears were everyday backup tools kept in the security office. Xu Sanduo gripped them and rushed to the tenth floor.

One pair wasn’t enough, so he had the security brothers find about ten more pairs. Only then, with the nurses helping and the shears in hand, did they manage to cut through all the hair.

Everyone breathed a sigh of relief seeing the hair lying lifeless on the floor, devoid of any vitality.

β€œCome, lend a hand. Let’s get him onto the stretcher,” several female nurses called out as they brought a stretcher from the ambulance.

Xu Sanduo called some brothers from the security office to help lift Wei Jinbao, but his body was incredibly heavy, like a massive boulder.

A nurse looked at Wei Jinbao and remarked, β€œRich people are different, must be eating too well – we can’t even lift him together.”

β€œYou don’t know? This Wei Jinbao is a prominent tycoon in Hong Kong,” another nurse whispered.

What they didn’t know was that Akita Kyoko, who had been attached to the γ€ŠHell Scroll》, had already slipped out and silently followed Wei Jinbao onto the stretcher.

A pair of ice-cold hands wrapped around his neck, making him scream in terror: β€œAkita… Akita Kyoko, get away from me!”

The nurses watched him talking to thin air and shook their heads, saying, β€œNot only does he have physical problems, but it seems we’ll need Dr. Cheng Fengying from our hospital to step in.”

Akita Kyoko’s entanglement with Wei Jinbao had penetrated to his very bones; she wanted to drag him to hell to be her ill-fated lover.

Akita Kyoko glared at him and said, β€œWas your living wife as beautiful as me? She died of illness, didn’t she? Hahahahaha…”

She had infiltrated his villa and tormented his wife and daughter.

Akita Kyoko took great pleasure in this.

Wei Jinbao continued to clutch his head and roar, β€œAkita Kyoko, can’t you leave me alone!”

Akita Kyoko lay quietly beside him and said, β€œI will stay with you, forever and ever…”

    Her curse, an eternal curse!

Wei Jinbao’s manic behavior continued to occur repeatedly on the way, until even Xu Sanduo, sitting with the nurses in the ambulance, couldn’t bear to watch anymore.

Xu Sanduo closed his eyes and said, β€œNurses, please give Wei Jinye some sedatives, he’s having hallucinations…”

The nurse nodded and drew some medicine from the backup supply into a syringe, then gave Wei Jinbao an injection.

Wei Jinbao quieted down and was soon transferred to the VIP ward after receiving emergency treatment.

But Akita Kyoko, crouching beside him, had no intention of letting him go, hiding in a corner of the room while watching him.

The black cat in Ning Lan’s backpack grew restless, its dark green pupils fixed on a dead corner of the room, right at the bottom right of the window curtains.

The black cat sprang from the bag, its front paws lunging toward that corner.

A cold ghostly wind blew through, and the white shadow seized the opportunity to slip through the window gap.

Seeing the cat’s agitation, Ning Lan knew it must have sensed something in the corner…

Ghosts fear sunlight, which is why they don’t dare to come out brazenly during the day.

Ning Lan walked to the windowsill and pulled the curtains completely open, until a piercing ray of sunlight shone into the room, and the black cat lazily curled up and rolled in the sunlight.

Only after confirming there was nothing unusual did her anxious heart finally settle down.

Wei Jinbao lay on the white hospital bed, long unconscious, merely being kept alive by nutrient solutions.

Xu Sanduo sighed and said, β€œWei Jinye keeps muttering a Japanese woman’s name, as if he’s been poisoned.”

β€œEverything has its karma, perhaps this is the karma that Wei Jinye has sown,” Ning Lan said.

Xu Sanduo agreed with Ning Lan’s words: β€œWei Jinye did many unsavory things when he was young, but I remember he gave me a bowl of rice to eat, that’s why I’ve kept watching over Tong Lau.”

Xu Sanduo was a young man from the countryside, looking at Hong Kong city with his suitcase on his back.

He had been rejected from many workplaces due to being fully staffed, but when he was feeling lost, he saw Tong Lau’s recruitment notice and came to apply.

Wei Jinbao took a liking to him at first sight and let him join the security team.

Xu Sanduo rose from being a lowly security guard to team captain, all thanks to Wei Jinbao’s promotion.

Xu Sanduo knew that Wei Jinbao still enjoyed philandering with women from Heaven from Earth even after losing his wife and daughter – how could such a person not face retribution?

He only felt gratitude towards him.

If it weren’t for Wei Jinbao back then, he wouldn’t have survived until now.

β€œWe came to ask Wei Jinye something, but it seems inconvenient now,” Ning Lan shook her head, feeling they would leave empty-handed.

Xu Sanduo asked, β€œWhat important matter did you come to ask Wei Jinye about? When he wakes up, I can relay the message for you.”

Ning Lan said directly, β€œWe want to know about the person who designed Tong Lau, we have some questions, maybe it’s related to the haunting at Tong Lau.”

When Xu Sanduo heard about Tong Lau’s haunting, his eyes lit up and said, β€œYou must be talking about Gu Xiansheng, he’s a famous building designer in Hong Kong. However, Tong Lau became his failed masterpiece, and he never designed another beautiful building after that.”

β€œGood. Do you know his address? We need it,” Shen Qingyou asked Xu Sanduo anxiously.

Xu Sanduo nodded and said, β€œThe newspapers spread stories about his industry legend; they say he now runs a hair salon.”

They learned about this Gu Xiansheng’s whereabouts from Xu Sanduo.

Apparently, after retiring, he changed careers to become a craftsman and opened a hair salon in Harbor City in Hong Kong’s Kowloon district.

The two set off for Harbor City after leaving the hospital; they had to arrive before 6 o’clock, as they needed to return to set up the ritual space in the evening.

Ning Lan spotted a convenience store in Harbor City, thinking of the hungry black cat in her backpack.

She unconsciously walked in and said, β€œLet’s buy some canned fish to take home, it looks hungry.”

Shen Qingyou smiled gently and said, β€œNing Lan, you really like cats, shall I browse with you?”

Ning Lan’s heart skipped a beat as she said, β€œUm… when I was very young and staying with my grandmother, she had a little white cat that often played with me, but I lost it later.”

Shen Qingyou asked in surprise, β€œLost it? Did it run away?”

Ning Lan shook her head and said, β€œIt didn’t run away, the neighbor caught and hanged it…”

She recalled that little white cat with trepidation; her childhood companion had been considered an ill omen by the neighbors.

The little white cat had been playing happily with her one day, and the next day the neighbor used a hook to pierce through its neck while it was still alive.

Recalling this childhood memory, Ning Lan’s heart suddenly tightened.

Shen Qingyou sighed and said, β€œI understand how you feel, it must leave a bitter taste.”

Ning Lan made a soft sound of agreement, followed by a long, heavy silence.
