Volume One: The Old Corpse in the Mountain Village

    Paranoid Personality

    ICD-10F60.0 Paranoid Personality Traits.

(CD-10 is a medical classification list by the World Health Organization used worldwide.)

Ning Lan thought about how she had abruptly used water to help Shen Qingyou last night. She moved her lips and awkwardly said, “Yesterday… I had no choice but to splash you with water, sorry.”

Shen Qingyou didn’t mind and said calmly, “It happened suddenly, I won’t hold it against you.”

Ning Lan and Shen Qingyou were like half-roommates, meaning they shared some living space but weren’t full roommates. They no longer had the previous kind of sharp opposition between them.

The two of them didn’t sleep all night last night, thinking that the “ghost” wouldn’t appear during the day. They each went back to their rooms to rest for a few hours. Shen Qingyou explained her plan to Ning Lan in detail.

Ning Lan asked, “Will Master Wei Jinye believe what we say?”

Shen Qingyou shrugged and stood up, saying, “The breakthrough is with him. If we don’t go, we can’t find the bronze mirror.”

Ning Lan thought Shen Qingyou made sense. The bronze mirror might very well be with Master Wei Jinye.

The story repeatedly mentions Master Wei Jinye, indicating his importance in the game.

The game’s hints seem to intentionally guide them to make mistakes and then lead to another part of the story.

Now it seems that the game’s hints shouldn’t be blindly trusted. One wrong step leads to many wrong steps.

The two of them talked and then went back to their rooms to pack clothes. Ning Lan prepared a few changes of clothes and put them in her backpack.

Ning Lan held the key in her hand and watched as Shen Qingyou also finished packing and came out of the master bedroom.

Security team leader Xu Sanduo saw them coming down from upstairs, their bags bulging. Xu Sanduo approached and asked, “Are you two also moving out of Tong Lau? Didn’t you just move in the day before yesterday?”

In just two short days, the death of Sun Er Pao occurred, causing panic among the people in Tong Lau. They had long felt that the building was not clean.

With a death occurring, everyone quickly found a new place to move to and escape.

They were afraid that the “ghost” in the building would randomly kill and target them.

Ning Lan sighed and said, “It’s not that we want to leave; it’s because Master Wei Jinye didn’t listen to us and brought the ghost here. We can’t stay in this building anymore!”

Xu Sanduo tried to stop them, saying, “Don’t go. If you all leave, Tong Lau will become an empty place!”

“We have long seen that the ghost in this building is very fierce and evil. We need to unite with Taoist Master Sanqing to activate the ghost-exorcising formation to destroy the ghost.” Ning Lan calculated with her fingers and gave Tong Lau a meaningful look.

Ning Lan was talking nonsense with a serious face, and Shen Qingyou nodded in agreement.

Xu Sanduo saw that they were chatting happily with Taoist Master Sanqing yesterday. They must have come to Tong Lau with the master to catch the ghost.

Xu Sanduo listened and believed them completely. He had a few of his men help carry their bags and said, “Since you have learned the ghost-exorcising magic, why not stay and eliminate this ghost?”

“We want to help, but we can’t. Master Wei Jinye is hiding something, and we don’t know the whole story, so we can’t perform the ritual to send the ghost away.” Ning Lan shook her head, took the backpack from the security guard, and walked straight towards the exit of Tang Gate.

Xu Sanduo was stunned by what he heard. Master Wei Jinye must have many hidden issues and seems to have really offended this “ghost.”

Xu Sanduo called his men to block their path, while he went alone to find Master Wei Jinye.

His men managed to persuade them to put their luggage back.

Heaven on Earth, nightclub private room.

In Hong Kong in 1974, the bustling streets always had some people lingering in places filled with bright lights and loud music.

Master Wei Jinye founded the Heaven on Earth nightclub. Whenever his subordinates had something to report, they would come to Heaven on Earth to inform him.

When Xu Sanduo found Master Wei Jinye, he was in Heaven on Earth, drinking with his lover. Master Wei Jinye had one arm around a woman with heavy makeup and the other hand holding a bottle of Guinness beer.

Master Wei Jinye, who was addicted to smoking and drinking, had a bad temper and got angry easily.

The woman beside him carefully attended to him, afraid that if he became unhappy, he might start hitting her.

At the door stood several bodyguards wearing black sunglasses and dressed in suits, seriously blocking Xu Sanduo’s way, saying, “Master Jinye is enjoying himself inside. Without his call, no one can see him!”

“I have important business to discuss with Master Wei Jinye. If you delay his matters, can you bear the responsibility?” Xu Sanduo straightened his back and said.

One of the bodyguards recognized him as the captain from Tong Lau and whispered to the head bodyguard, “He manages the security for Master Jinye at Tong Lau. He really might have something to report.”

The security guard gave him a sidelong glance and said, “Wait here. I’ll go in and tell Master Wei Jinye.”

He went inside for a moment, then hurried footsteps were heard. The door of the private room opened, and he made a gesture for him to enter.

Xu Sanduo nodded and went into the private room. Master Wei Jinye pushed away the woman in his arms. The woman bowed to him and retreated.

Xu Sanduo glanced at the woman, his eyes full of pity, suggesting she had been “dealt with” by Master Wei Jinye quite a bit last night.

The woman didn’t dare make a sound and just kept her head down as she pushed the door open and left the private room.

Outsiders say that Master Wei Jinye has a unique habit, which is a different kind of “abusive love” towards women.

He is over sixty years old and loves to play, always trying new tricks.

Xu Sanduo saw these perverse behaviors but didn’t expose them.

Xu Sanduo is just a worker and can only obey these wealthy people.

Master Wei Jinye picked up a cigar from the table, and Xu Sanduo quickly ran over to light it for him. Master Wei Jinye patted his shoulder and said, “Sanduo, clever and sensible.”

Xu Sanduo gave a silly laugh and said, “Master Jinye, you’re too kind. I’m here to tell you about the situation at Tong Lau.”

Master Wei Jinye hadn’t returned to Tong Lau in the past two days; he had been enjoying himself at Heaven on Earth. Master Wei Jinye asked, “Is Tong Lau still doing well? Is the security order well maintained?”

Subconsciously, Master Wei Jinye inquired about Xu Sanduo’s work situation. Xu Sanduo immediately knelt down and said, “Master Jinye, there has been another murder at Tong Lau… Er Pao is also dead.”

Master Wei Jinye extinguished his cigar and listened intently as Xu Sanduo explained everything in detail.

The Hong Kong police hadn’t yet linked the investigation to Master Wei Jinye, but he could very well be the next one to enter the police station.

Master Wei Jinye’s face darkened. Such incidents at Tong Lau could affect the property negatively, and if bad news hit the headlines, he would lose face.

The residents moving out of Tong Lau was a minor issue; if the police uncovered his hidden dealings, he would end up in big trouble, possibly in prison.

Master Wei Jinye picked up a cane from the sofa and said, “Sanduo, you must come back to Tong Lau with me right away!”

Xu Sanduo acknowledged and helped Master Wei Jinye out of the private room. Several bodyguards outside followed Master Wei Jinye down the stairs.

These bodyguards were sent by Sun Er Pao to protect Master Wei Jinye, but who would have thought Sun Er Pao’s life would end at Tong Lau.

His red-plated car was still parked by the roadside. A bodyguard opened the door, and Master Wei Jinye, with his cane, got into the car unhurriedly.

Xu Sanduo, worried that the bodyguards might take the wrong route, sat in the front passenger seat to guide them.

An hour later, their car stopped at the base of Tong Lau.

Master Wei Jinye watched as the residents inside Tong Lau were moving furniture and preparing to leave. Seeing this scene, he knew the situation at Tong Lau was quite serious.

Master Wei Jinye went up to the lounge on the 10th floor and asked Xu Sanduo to invite them in. He also asked the maid to prepare iced lemon tea again. (Iced lemon tea is a popular drink in Hong Kong, often served to guests as a gesture of hospitality.)

“Master Wei Jinye, let’s not beat around the bush. Let’s be straightforward. If you don’t take the ghost problem at Tong Lau seriously, you might be the next one in trouble,” Ning Lan said bluntly as she entered the living room.

Master Wei Jinye’s hands trembled as he held the cup; he was scared.

With a “bang,” the cup shattered.

His hand was cut by the pieces of the cup. Master Wei Jinye sighed deeply and said, “It’s her! Her family still won’t let me go!”

Shen Qingyou, observing Master Wei Jinye’s series of agitated behaviors, whispered in Ning Lan’s ear, “Master Wei Jinye might have a psychological disorder.”

According to ICD-10, F60.0 Paranoid Personality Traits include being easily sensitive, frustrated, suspicious, holding grudges, and being paranoid.

Master Wei Jinye’s condition is quite similar to the psychological characteristics of a paranoid personality.

His irritability and restlessness are all disguises.

People with Paranoid Personality Disorder feel very troubled and will seek revenge at any cost.

The reasons for developing such a personality might be closely related to his family environment, the level of education received later in life, and his situation as an adult.

People who help him end up becoming his enemies, and if you don’t help him, he will develop malice towards you.

Master Wei Jinye waved his hand to let the bodyguards leave, and the room became quiet with just the three of them remaining.

The family living on the 18th floor owed Master Wei Jinye nearly six months of rent. Master Wei Jinye took a liking to a woman in their family named Lan Fang, and he suggested that the man use the woman to pay off the debt.

The couple’s wages were withheld by the large textile factory, which said that they would pay the workers once the big boss allocated the funds.

For the past few months, they have been living off their savings, being very frugal. They also have a daughter who needs school fees and living expenses. How could they possibly have money left to pay the rent?

“Master Jinye, please give us another half month! Lan Fang can’t go with you!” The man knelt down and begged Master Wei Jinye.

The man refused to hand over Lan Fang, so Master Wei Jinye ordered the bodyguards to break his leg.

The steel rods in the bodyguards’ hands were not just for show; with each strike, the man’s leg was crippled.

The man, dragging his leg, watched as his wife was pressed onto the table by Master Wei Jinye, while their daughter, sitting at the desk drawing, began to cry.

That drawing was thus captured in the sketchbook, preserving the painful moment.

He grabbed Lan Fang by the hair and slammed her head onto the table, saying, “You should look at yourself. Master Jinye has taken a liking to you, and yet you don’t appreciate it.”

Lan Fang struggled fiercely until she fainted. Master Wei Jinye knew Lan Fang was tough and didn’t want to make a big scene, as it would negatively affect his reputation.

He instructed the bodyguards to kick the whole family out. When Lan Fang regained consciousness, she lifted her head and said with difficulty, “Master Jinye, please don’t drive us away. I agree.”

In this way, their family didn’t enjoy peace for even a few months before Lan Fang disappeared from the city.

The man took his daughter to search for Lan Fang and never returned to Tong Lau.

Master Wei Jinye crushed the cup in his hand without feeling pain, and through gritted teeth, he said, “It’s her! It must be her!”

Nearly delirious, Master Wei Jinye’s speech became incoherent. Ning Lan called the bodyguards in, which helped to calm him down.

Master Wei Jinye’s words were contradictory. What did Lan Fang experience during those months?

Ning Lan stepped out of the room and said, “His words don’t make sense, half true and half false, only half can be trusted.”
