Barren Star – Chapter 80
by Little PandaIt will happen.
Feng Yi wasn’t surprised at all that Ling Shu would send Little Fengjiu back.
Little Fengjiu hung her head dejectedly, not a trace of her previous smugness remaining. From time to time, she cast pleading glances at Ling Shu. But how could Ling Shu have the leisure to observe a youngling? She met Feng Yi’s gaze and hesitantly invited Feng Yi to a duel. If Feng Yi won, then she would belong to Feng Yi; if she won, then Feng Yi would belong to her.
Feng Yi glared at Ling Shu, not bothering to respond to her.
*What kind of ridiculous choice is this?*
Little Fengjiu looked at Feng Yi, then at Ling Shu, and suddenly understood. She chirped at Feng Yi, βLet’s have a duel! If you win, then I’ve already learned my lesson. If I win, then you can’t punish me!β
Feng Yi: β???β She gave a gentle smile to Ning Buyi and Hua Zhuoyu, who were watching the drama unfold from the side. Turning her head, she grabbed Little Fengjiu and walked into the house. Not long after, a series of wails and howls emerged from within, loud enough to reach the clouds.
βHow did you two get here?β Ling Shu looked at Ning Buyi and Hua Zhuoyu, curiosity in her tone.
βNothing much going on recently, so weβre just wandering around,β Ning Buyi shrugged. Actually, it wasn’t entirely true that there was nothing to do, but with Beidou and the others on Mountain and Sea Star, she could completely be a hands-off manager.
βJust like Miss Lu,β Ling Shu said.
βMiss Lu? Lu Zhiwei?β Hua Zhuoyu raised an eyebrow. After the Mountain and Sea Star incident had come to a close, Lu Zhiwei had departed for Da Xia Imperial Star. But listening to Ling Shu, it seemed Lu Zhiwei had come to Beast Star? βShe came here?β Hua Zhuoyu asked.
βShe went to the Fox Clan village not long ago.β Feng Yiβs voice came from inside. She emerged, carrying the now listless Little Fengjiu, and smiled. βI donβt know what method she used, but in any case, Tu Shan Sansanβs fox parents agreed to stop setting her up on blind dates.β
A look of surprise appeared on Hua Zhuoyuβs face.
Lu Zhiwei works pretty fast.
But do Tu Shan Sansan’s parents know about Lu Zhiwei’s terrible behavior?
βI heard the Nine-Tailed Fox vouched for Miss Lu.β Ling Shu suddenly spoke up. She had heard this while sparring with someone, hadn’t paid much attention to it at the time, but now that Ning Buyi and Hua Zhuoyu had brought it up, she suddenly remembered.
Ning Buyi: ββ¦β The various beast clans venerated the beasts within the γBai Ze Tuγ as ancestral gods. The Fox Clan, in particular, regarded the Nine-Tailed Fox as their ancestor. Lu Zhiwei wouldnβt need to do anything; just taking a photo holding the Nine-Tailed Fox and getting its paw print would be enough.
βCan Lord Bai Ze only stay on Mountain and Sea Star?β Feng Yi suddenly asked, a thought occurring to her. Seeing Ning Buyi and Hua Zhuoyuβs gazes turn towards her, she explained, βOur Beast Race doesnβt want to possess the Beast Ancestors, we just want to invite them to Beast Star for a short stay.β The prophecy of the Xuanwu had come true; after Bai Ze appeared in the world, the Beast Ancestors revived. It was a pity that this location wasnβt on Beast Star. Despite this, the enthusiasm of the various Beast Star clans for the Beast Ancestors hadn’t diminished in the slightest.
βThey can leave Mountain and Sea Star,β Ning Buyi said after a moment of contemplation. βBut whether they are willing to come to Beast Star depends on their own wishes.β
Feng Yi nodded, her eyes sparkling like bright stars. βI understand.β Ning Buyiβs nod meant the matter was mostly settled. If Ning Buyi had opposed it, she would have had to persuade the Ten Thousand Beasts Alliance to give up the idea.
βAre there only Bai Ze, the Nine-Tailed Fox, and Xiezhi?β Ling Shu blinked after a moment of thought. βCould other Beast Ancestors descend? For example, Lu Shu [ιΉΏθ | LΓΉshΗ | a mythical horse-like creature], Bi Fang [η’ζΉ | BΓ¬fΔng | a mythical one-legged bird], Kun Peng [鲲顬 | KΕ«npΓ©ng | a mythical giant bird/fish] and so on?β
Ning Buyi couldnβt give a definite answer. After all, the Mountain and Sea Atlasβs stingy system refreshed its Easter eggs without any discernible pattern. She couldnβt guarantee that new Beast Ancestors would appear in the future.
Feng Yi suddenly asked, βWould you like to see the γBai Ze Tuγ?β
Ning Buyi was startled; Feng Yiβs words hit exactly what she was hoping for. However, during their time with the Insect Race, the power of the Supreme Clay Tablet had been absorbed by the Mountain and Sea Atlas. If something unusual happened to the γBai Ze Tuγ as well, she would feel terrible towards Feng Yi and the others. Although she greatly desired to see the γBai Ze Tuγ, Ning Buyi felt she should state the ugly truth beforehand: βWe saw the Supreme Clay Tablet on the Insect Star, and it contained remnants of supreme power. However, after we saw it, that power dissipated.β
Ning Buyiβs words were rather euphemistic. Feng Yi was stunned for a moment, then understood. She gazed intently at Ning Buyi and said softly, βOur Beast Race’s supreme scroll, the γBai Ze Tuγ, has no practical use. Its existence is simply to remind the Beast Race to remember its history.β However, there was one difference. On the γBai Ze Tuγ, the images of Bai Ze, the Nine-Tailed Fox, and Xiezhi were glowing, as if they were about to fly out of the scroll at any moment; this was the breath of life. The Beast Races that had yet to revive remained dim and lifeless. But at this moment, these things weren’t important. She only knew that Ning Buyi held some method of reviving the Beast Ancestors. Beast Star didn’t need to know Ning Buyi’s secret; they only cared about the final result.
Feng Yiβs attitude put Ning Buyiβs mind at ease.
Even if I damage the γBai Ze Tuγ, I won’t have to compensate.
As the supreme treasure of the Beast Race, the γBai Ze Tuγ could be copied and photographed, but those replicas lacked spirit and were merely used for decoration. The genuine γBai Ze Tuγ had always been kept by the four leaders of the Ten Thousand Beasts Alliance. However, not long ago, Feng Yi had obtained the other three keys, granting her the authority to directly open the treasure box.
The γBai Ze Tuγ, slowly unfurled on the tabletop, was only one meter long. It contained thousands of types of plant and wood spirits, monsters, and beasts. While staring at a particular point on the picture, Ning Buyi could perceive those images moving. In the blink of an eye, a different beast would replace the one in the same spot.
βThe luster on the Beast Ancestors in the picture is different; there are three types in total.β Feng Yi pointed to a light spot the size of a grain of rice and turned to explain to Ning Buyi, βThe ones shining brightly like stars are those who have already revived, like the Nine-Tailed Fox. We suspect that those with a dim luster have the hope of revival. As for those that are grayish and exude a dark aura, they probably wonβt return.β
Ning Buyi pondered upon hearing these words, then looked up at Feng Yi: βCan I touch the γBai Ze Tuγ?β
Feng Yi generously replied, βOf course.β
Ning Buyi slowly extended her hand. The moment her fingertips touched the γBai Ze Tuγ, she sensed a stirring within her Mountain and Sea Atlas. Her conjecture was correct; the γBai Ze Tuγ also contained remnants of supreme power. The Mountain and Sea Atlas was slowly absorbing the power from the γBai Ze Tuγ. Along with the return of this supreme power, extremely subtle changes occurred within the Atlasβs marketplace. No new Easter eggs appeared, but purchasable exotic beasts became directly available.
The bad news was that Atlas currency was required to purchase them. The good news was that the amount required wasnβt much. At the current rate of progress, she could buy all the Beast Ancestors that appeared in the Atlas within about a year.
βHow is it? Did you sense anything?β Feng Yi had been gazing intently at Ning Buyi. Seeing the change in her expression, her tone involuntarily carried a hint of excitement and anticipation.
Ning Buyi withdrew her hand, covering her mouth with a light cough. βThey are indeed reviving, butββ
βBut what?β Feng Yi asked impatiently.
Ning Buyi: βWe need to wait patiently.β Her current greenification value wasn’t enough yet; she couldn’t act like a big spender on Beast Star. However, when Bai Ze and the others came to Beast Star, she could bring her new “little brothers” along.
When she heard the conjunction βbut,β Feng Yiβs heart felt as if it were clutched tightly by a hand, her whole body tense, fearing that Ning Buyi would utter some ominous words. However, upon hearing the word βwait,β her heart suddenly relaxed. The corners of her lips curled upwards wildly; she couldnβt suppress that surge of joy. The Beast Race had already waited for so many years; now that change had arrived, what did a few more decades matter?
Ning Buyi didnβt know what Feng Yi was thinking.
If she had known, she would certainly have told Feng Yi that it wouldnβt take nearly that long.
After staying on Beast Star for a month, she and Hua Zhuoyu departed under Little Fengjiuβs reluctant gaze, returning to Mountain and Sea Star.
These journeys were less like vacations and more like βbusiness trips.β
βArenβt you going to visit the most developed Da Xia Imperial Star?β Hua Zhuoyu asked, sitting in a swivel chair and lightly turning to face Ning Buyi.
Ning Buyi covered her mouth with a yawn and shook her head. βNot for now.β The world was vast, but she just wanted to stay home on Mountain and Sea Star.
Everything on Mountain and Sea Star was as usual.
Various projects were progressing smoothly.
Many new residents had moved into Aurora City, gradually making it lively, while the base had slowly become quiet. The adults were all busy working everywhere, leaving only the younglings to play there. Ning Buyi still had no intention of moving to Aurora City. After the administrative center relocated to Aurora City, she demolished the superfluous buildings at the base, dug a pond in the forest, and built a forest cabin.
At dusk,
The sky was filled with clouds like a burning fire, spreading from one end to the other.
Ning Buyi sat in a rocking chair, softly humming a tune she didn’t know where she’d heard.
A cute, blue-eyed white kitten nestled in her arms, contentedly squinting, occasionally letting out comfortable purrs.
Hua Zhuoyu emerged from the house and placed her hand on the chair, immediately stopping its rocking.
Ning Buyi turned to look at Hua Zhuoyu, puzzled.
βIs this the life you want?β Hua Zhuoyu curved her lips into a slight smile, then lowered her gaze to the comfortably purring kitten in Ning Buyiβs arms, her tone tinged with a hint of playful reproach. βIt feels like itβs the same whether Iβm here or not. Are the fluffy ones enough to fill your heart?β
Ning Buyi blinked, looking quite innocent. βHow could that be? Without you, this place would be a prison.β
Hua Zhuoyu chuckled softly, took the kitten from Ning Buyiβs arms, petted it, and then placed it on the ground. She gazed at Ning Buyi, her tone slow and deliberate, βJust tell me directly, what else do you need me to do?β
Ning Buyi pointed. βI think that area over there needs a swing set. What do you think?β
Hua Zhuoyu lowered her eyes, a gentle smile gracing her lips. βIt will happen.β
Whatever you desire, you shall possess.
