Waiting for You at the End of the Red Carpet

    Awards Ceremony

The moment Lin Sifei’s Weibo post went up, Luo Corporation’s public relations team arranged for it to become a trending topic. Luo Jewelry’s official account also posted a statement, expressing that her fierce love for her cat was understandable and thanking everyone for their concern.

With the company having spoken, the employees underneath began to act without restraint, posting heaps of beautiful cat pictures.

【Xiao Xiao absolutely loves having her picture taken. The moment you point a phone at her, she starts to strike a pose.】

【The cat is allowed to roam freely around the company. She’s knocked over files and done parkour in the office, and President Luo is always very indulgent.】

【Other than Young Miss Lin, the cat has the most special privileges.】

With so many pictures, taken by people of varying skill, a huge batch of reaction memes soon appeared. This was especially true for the pictures of Lin Sifei doing parkour in the office; all sorts of memes came out of those.

Lin Sifei looked at the pictures online with a mixture of love and hate. As a cat who loved her looks, why did she have so many ugly photos!

She sighed helplessly. After a moment’s thought, she decided to let it go. This was all very normal, and it was a form of her fans’ love.

She saved a set of reaction memes with tears in her eyes and sighed silently.

“Let’s sleep, it’s getting late.” Lin Sifei stretched, turned into a cat, climbed onto the bed, and curled up into a ball by Luo Ke’s head.

Luo Ke reached out, letting Lin Sifei rest her tail on her hand. She gave the fluffy tail a little squeeze and closed her eyes.

Lang Jingju opened the door to his home, wearily changed into his slippers, and bent down to place his shoes in the cabinet.

    “You’re back!”

He grunted in acknowledgment, looking at the girl before him who was wearing a face mask. A glance was all it took to see the pile of delivery boxes in the living room.

    “What did you buy now?”

The girl squatted on the sofa, picking up her phone and tapping away. “Feifei endorsed a face mask, so I bought a ton. You can try it, it’s excellent!”

Lang Jingju was silent for a moment. “You have sensitive skin. Don’t just use random products.”

Because Lang Jinglin’s skin was very sensitive, her masks and cosmetics were almost all custom-made. She needed to get tested every year so the formula could be adjusted.

“This one is specifically for sensitive skin.” Lang Jinglin waved a hand dismissively. “You wouldn’t understand.”

She found a good angle and held up her phone for a selfie.

As Lang Jingju walked past, he glanced over and saw that she was posting the photo, calling on her fans to buy the masks.

He retracted his gaze, walked to the table, and picked up a glass to get some water.

After taking the picture, Lang Jinglin removed the mask, washed her face, and walked over.

“I remember you’re filming with Lin Sifei this time, right?”

The muscles in Lang Jingju’s shoulders instantly tensed. “Yeah.”

Lang Jinglin didn’t notice her younger brother’s change and continued, “So, what’s she like? Does she have any dirt on her?”

“She’s a very good person. No dirt.” Lang Jingju held his glass and walked past her. “I have class tomorrow, so I’m going to bed.”

Lang Jinglin pouted and stomped her foot. “What’s wrong with helping me look? It’s not like I asked you to frame her.”

Lang Jingju walked upstairs to his room as if he hadn’t heard a thing.

Fuming, Lang Jinglin opened her phone. Seeing the comments praising her, she happily picked a few to reply to. Then she opened a forum and, as expected, saw people mocking the sales figures for Yan Yafei’s endorsement. Angrily, she placed another huge order.

She could just give them away if she had too many. It wasn’t like she was short on cash.

Back in his room, Lang Jingju turned on his desk lamp and did his homework.

The hour hand pointed to twelve before he finally pinched the bridge of his nose and lay down on his bed.

He picked up his phone and saw another message from his sister, begging him to pay more attention to Lin Sifei and dig up some dirt.

Lang Jingju helplessly refused and lay back down. Ever since his sister had gotten into celebrity-chasing, she had thrown her whole heart and soul into it. Before, it was just spending a bit more money, but now she wanted to find dirt on others.

I’ll just quit the industry after this film, he thought coolly. That’ll save me from being bothered all the time.

He closed his eyes and forced himself to calm down and sleep.

As the female lead, Lin Sifei had the most scenes. She didn’t disappoint, and progress was always smooth. On workdays when Lang Jingju was at school, they would communicate via Feixin1 to discuss the scenes for the weekend.

After filming on Saturday, Lang Jingju thanked her earnestly. “I’ve learned so much from you. It’s different from what the teachers at school talk about, but it’s very useful.”

Lin Sifei was also formally trained2, but in practice, what you learn in school can be a bit rigid. A lot of things still had to be figured out through experience; the practical approach was more important.

“You’re welcome. Once you officially start acting, you’ll find there’s still much more to learn,” Lin Sifei said with a smile, clapping her hands.

She really liked this junior of hers. He was a bit cold, but he was very well-behaved and had excellent manners. The industry needed pure, untainted people like him to foster a good atmosphere.

But Lang Jingju shook his head. “I’m not going to act anymore after this film.”

Lin Sifei’s eyes widened in surprise. “Why?!”

“Someone in my family is a celebrity-chaser.”

Lin Sifei remembered what Luo Ke had said—his sister was a fan of Yan Yafei. For him to be so troubled that he wanted to quit the industry, she must be asking for dirt.

She understood this all too well. Many people she knew had faced similar troubles. The moment they met, they’d be asked, is so-and-so’s scandal true? What about their dirt?

“You know, you can just ignore all that.”

“I have been ignoring it.” Lang Jingju pressed his lips together.

Lin Sifei could actually see a hint of grievance on his face.

“I refused, but it was no use.”

Lin Sifei snapped her fingers. “That must be because you’re too well-behaved. You have to throw a tantrum once in a while. Getting angry shows that you really hate it. A simple refusal might not convey the extent of your revulsion to the other person.”

This was especially true with people you were close to, who always thought they could get what they wanted by being a little coquettish.

She herself was a living example. Luo Ke spoiled her too much; acting cute was practically a panacea.

But Luo Ke could also put on a cold face. The moment her smile vanished, Lin Sifei knew Luo Ke wasn’t going to back down, so she would give up. This usually happened when she wanted to eat snacks without exercising.

“Wouldn’t throwing a tantrum be too awful?” Lang Jingju hesitated.

Just then, Director Luo started calling for them to get ready.

Lin Sifei stood up and smiled. “The people who love you will tolerate your occasional little tempers, and they’ll also respect your feelings.”

Lang Jingju thought for a moment and nodded. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.” Lin Sifei made an OK sign with her hand. Besides, kid, if you refuse your sister, I’ll be safe too.

After filming, Lin Sifei slung her bag over her shoulder and walked out, only to see that it was raining outside the corridor.

“What do we do? No umbrella. We’ll have to run back and get soaked.”

“The weather forecast didn’t say it would rain.”

Listening to the complaints around her, Lin Sifei tightened the straps of her backpack and ran down the stairs.

In the lobby downstairs, a woman in a long trench coat was standing near the door, her head tilted slightly up as she watched the rain outside.

When Lin Sifei saw her, a huge smile spread across her face. She rushed forward and threw herself onto the woman, hooking her arms around her neck.

    “Luo Ke!”

The force of her pounce made Luo Ke take two steps back to steady herself.

She held Lin Sifei’s waist, smiling as she took in her scent. “Why are you so happy?”

“On my way out, I heard someone say it was raining and they didn’t have an umbrella.”

    “So?”

Lin Sifei bit her lip and grinned. “I have someone to pick me up, so I won’t get wet.”

It was a bit like rejoicing in others’ misfortune3, but she couldn’t help but think it. She even felt the urge to show off the person who came to pick her up from work every day.

Luo Ke chuckled and put an arm around her. “It’s a good thing you weren’t beaten up.”

Lin Sifei leaned against her and stuck out her tongue. “I didn’t say it out loud.”

She and Luo Ke walked out the door and opened a slightly larger umbrella. They huddled together side-by-side, and the canopy just managed to cover them both.

The inside of the umbrella had a blue-sky-and-white-clouds print, as if in this dark, overcast sky, there was a small patch of blue where the weather was calm and sunny.

Back at the hotel, Lin Sifei took off her shoes and socks, walking barefoot on the carpet as she picked up a glass from the table to drink some water.

Since the shoot would take several months, Luo Ke had booked a long-term room at the hotel.

They had initially moved into a standard double room and never bothered to change.

After living there for a while, the room was now filled with traces of them.

Lin Sifei’s cosmetics were laid out on the desk, along with her water glass and some small trinkets she had bought online.

The small room allowed Luo Ke to see Lin Sifei with just a glance—like right now, as Xiao Xiao was picking out a change of clothes.

She smiled and walked forward, taking her hand and wrapping her arms around her from behind. “Shall we shower together today?”

Her lips brushed against the side of Lin Sifei’s neck, the heat making her tremble.

Lin Sifei’s lips quivered. Because of the busy filming schedule, Luo Ke had been worried about her health, so they hadn’t done anything for a while.

Today, work had ended a little early, and Lin Sifei was feeling it too.

Her fingers slid across the clothes hanger, stopping on a nearby garment. “Which pajamas do you want?”

    “The little bear ones.”

Luo Ke nibbled on Lin Sifei’s ear.

Lin Sifei blushed and mumbled, “Those are my pajamas.”

“Didn’t you ask me to help you pick?” Luo Ke let out a light laugh. “I like this one. It’s softer. Looks delicious.”

The next day, Lin Sifei was completely spacing out. After finishing her parts, she sat down in a chair to rest.

When Director Luo came over to discuss the upcoming scenes, she made him pull up a chair and sit down to talk.

Lang Jingju leaned over to look at Director Luo’s storyboard and nodded.

Director Luo nodded in satisfaction, happy to have found two skilled actors who didn’t need him to nag. He clasped his hands behind his back and went to check the equipment again.

Lang Jingju dragged a small stool over and sat next to her.

Lin Sifei glanced at him. “Did you tell her?”

“Yeah, I told her during our video call.” Lang Jingju was also staying at the hotel provided by the crew on Saturdays for convenience.

He had put on a cold face with his sister during their video call yesterday—in reality, he had just frowned and refused to speak to her. As a result, Lang Jinglin got genuinely worried and didn’t bring up the matter again.

Lin Sifei nodded, satisfied. “Of course, you can’t use that trick too often. You have to know the difference between a reasonable request and being unreasonable. It only works because they care about you. If they don’t, getting angry is useless.”

This was all from Lin Sifei’s own experience. When she was little, she didn’t understand. She copied other children, acting cute and throwing tantrums with her parents. In the end, she was simply left alone; her parents wouldn’t see her for months at a time.

From then on, she knew that she couldn’t act spoiled with her parents like other children could.

Lang Jingju nodded. He and his sister had always had a good relationship. And this time, it proved that he was, indeed, more important than her celebrity-chasing, which made him feel much better.

The film shoot was progressing smoothly. Since it was all being done indoors, they didn’t have to worry about factors like the weather. The pace was fast, and they were now more than halfway through.

Most of Lang Jingju’s scenes were also done. Even when he came on weekends now, the filming pressure wasn’t very heavy.

“The Golden Flower Awards ceremony is coming up soon. Sifei-jie, your movie 《Light》 should be nominated. Have you received an invitation?”

“It might not get nominated,” Lin Sifei said, covering her face and laughing with extreme hypocrisy. “I haven’t gotten an invitation yet. I should probably wait another two days.”

Lang Jingju was very sincere. “Sifei-jie, you’ll definitely win Best Newcomer, no problem. Best Actress will probably go to another senior. I saw her movie, and it was truly excellent.”

Lin Sifei knew which one he was talking about. It was another art film about a mother’s arduous struggle.

She had watched it too. It was indeed very well-filmed and had a lot of depth. It didn’t just blindly promote maternal love; instead, it emphasized the mother’s struggle within that role.

“Senior Bai Su deserves to win. Her acting was really amazing.” Lin Sifei thought for a moment. “I think she just came back after giving birth. To deliver such an excellent performance while pregnant… I really admire her.”

“Senior Bai Su is quite formidable. Returning directly with a Golden Flower Awards nomination will be a huge boost for her.”

Lin Sifei nodded. It was clear this was a well-prepared comeback, timed perfectly. She was a very rational and powerful woman.

As they were chatting, Director Luo started waving for the two of them to get ready.

Sure enough, not two days later, Lin Sifei received an invitation from the Golden Flower venue, delivered by Li Tao.

Lin Sifei looked at the red invitation with its golden flower design, her smile radiant.

Luo Ke wrapped an arm around her waist. “Didn’t you say you were already a Film Queen? Why are you still so happy to get this award?”

“Of course I am. This is proof that I’m starting my journey here.” Lin Sifei turned her head and kissed her on the cheek. “I’m living here now. The honors from my past world have nothing to do with the present.”

Luo Ke reached out and hugged her, nuzzling against her.

“By the way, are you going this time?” Although the Golden Flower Awards were for actors, some investors were also invited. It was a golden opportunity for actors and directors to secure funding.

“I won’t go in.” Luo Ke rubbed her temples. “If I go, I’ll definitely be surrounded by a crowd, and I won’t be able to talk to you. I saw the invitation; my seat won’t be next to yours anyway.”

“Oh, I see.” Lin Sifei was a little disappointed, but if their seats weren’t together, there was indeed no point in going. It would just leave them both trapped inside, unable to get away.

Luo Ke noticed her disappointment and reached out to stroke her head. “I’ll wait for you outside the venue. When you’re done, I’ll be there to pick you up.”

Lin Sifei’s eyes lit up at her words. “Okay!”

She happily hugged Luo Ke, rubbing against her.

Because of the invitation, Lin Sifei asked Director Luo for leave to free up time for the gala.

“The gala is at night. You should still come in during the day to film a few parts.” Director Luo frowned slightly. “It’s a Saturday, your scenes with Lang Jingju. Missing a day will set us back a lot. For Xiao Lang’s next long break, the school seems to have organized an activity, so he can’t come.”

This was a bit of a dilemma. Lin Sifei frowned.

In the past, she would have agreed in a heartbeat, but her current situation was that she would turn into a cat. Between filming and the time for the gala, she might not have enough time.

“Let me calculate the time.” Lin Sifei took out her phone and started tapping on the calculator, calculating her duration.

“Director Luo, can I see the shooting schedule?”

Director Luo handed it to her. As expected, her sleep time the day before was less than eight hours, so her time as a human was shortened.

On top of that, Director Luo was rushing the schedule and had already moved the start time earlier. The gala also required early preparation, and she couldn’t be alone in the middle of it all, leaving no time to change into a cat.

She continued tapping on the calculator and found that she could probably still free up about an hour.

And she was being conservative with that estimate.

She breathed a sigh of relief. That was more than enough.

“No problem, Director Luo. I can do it.”

“That’s good.” Director Luo smiled and passed the schedule to everyone, confirming the filming times.

On the day of the awards ceremony, Lin Sifei woke up before dawn and rushed to the set to film.

Luo Ke’s heart ached for her, but that’s how work was. Almost every job required overtime. Though her heart ached, Luo Ke didn’t say anything, only giving her a kiss on the forehead.

“I’ll pick you up tonight. We can catch up on sleep when we get back.”

Lin Sifei glanced at her and muttered, “I hope I can actually get some sleep.”

Luo Ke gave her waist a squeeze. “Of course you can. I won’t mess with you.”

Then I’ll mess with you, Lin Sifei thought to herself.

Her eyes drifted to Luo Ke’s waist, cinched by a belt. So slender. And she knew better than anyone how perfectly toned that waist was beneath the fabric.

    “What are you looking at?”

Lin Sifei guiltily averted her gaze. “Nothing, just spacing out.”

She let out a yawn and took a sip of milk. “I’m off to work.”

    “I’ll walk you down.”

The two were inseparable downstairs, finally letting go after one last kiss.

The moment Lin Sifei entered the set, she was pulled from the tingling sweetness. The crew was operating like a well-oiled machine, and today’s scenes were a bit heavy. Because Director Luo had adjusted some of the plot, they needed to reshoot some earlier scenes.

They filmed until noon. Before she could even eat, Li Tao sent a car to pick her up and rush her to the company.

“I’ve found a sponsor for you. The dress and jewelry are absolutely magnificent.”

When Lin Sifei saw the dress, she was slightly stunned. This was beyond magnificent.

It was a white, floor-length gown. The lace edges were trimmed with silver metal, and the dress was encrusted with countless jewels, opulent but not tacky.

“This dress must be very expensive,” Lin Sifei silently marveled. To be able to place jewels on a dress and have it look this good, the designer themselves must be expensive.

Li Tao showed her the price tag directly.

Lin Sifei clutched her chest. She was already very rich, but seeing the price of this dress, she wouldn’t be able to afford it even if she sold herself.

She wanted to cry but had no tears.4 “Why did you find me something so expensive? I don’t need to be so high-profile. A low-key life is my motto.”

Li Tao gave her a look that said, figure it out yourself, and waved his hand. “Hurry up and change. Just be careful. If it really breaks, worst-case scenario, we’ll get President Luo to pay for it.”

Lin Sifei had no desire to pay for it, even if Luo Ke could afford it.

She took a deep breath and carefully put on the dress. Even when she sat down, she was extremely cautious, afraid of knocking off a single bead.

The makeup artists surrounded her to do her styling, which was also laden with jewels.

Lin Sifei felt like she was reliving the Luo Jewelry endorsement event. Looking at the jewels, she even mentally compared them and felt that they were about on par with Luo Corporation’s.

With that thought, she felt less pressure and wasn’t as careful with the jewelry.

Watching from the side, Li Tao’s heart was pounding in fear. He took out his phone and showed her the price of the jewelry.

A knot formed in Lin Sifei’s chest. She froze, not daring to move her head.

She got carried away. So expensive! Does anyone actually buy things this expensive?!

While they were at the company, Li Tao was constantly communicating with the staff at the Golden Flower venue, confirming the schedule.

“Get in the car, quick! It’s time to go!” Li Tao got in the car with her. This was her first award, and he was taking it very seriously.

In the car, he held a tablet and confirmed the route with the driver again, even drawing a simple map of where to drive slowly, where to detour, and where to listen for cues.

The driver just nodded, took a deep breath, and stepped on the gas.

The atmosphere made Lin Sifei a little nervous, and she quickly took a deep breath.

The driver entered the venue area, but then there was a problem. The car in front was too slow, and they had to wait.

Li Tao angrily slapped the car seat. “What are these people dragging their feet for? Do they think standing on the red carpet gets them more camera time? It’s just annoying.”

Lin Sifei looked at the flashing lights outside and found the familiar scene calming.

Although there was a small hiccup, it was all normal. The car stopped steadily in front of the red carpet, and Li Tao immediately showed his double standard.5

“Don’t walk the red carpet too fast. Give the reporters time to take pictures. You’re so beautiful, get more photos taken.”

Lin Sifei couldn’t help but smile as she gathered her skirt and stepped out of the car.

She was very familiar with walking the red carpet. Her posture and timing were all perfectly controlled.

Li Tao went ahead to wait for her. Seeing the situation, he breathed a sigh of relief.

When Lin Sifei reached the end of the red carpet, the host pulled her aside to chat. “Sifei, you look so beautiful today.”

“It’s my first time attending, so of course I have to take it seriously.”

“Did President Luo not come with you?”

“She didn’t. She’s very tired from work, so I let her rest. She said she’ll come pick me up when it’s over,” Lin Sifei said with a sweet smile.

The host clapped her hands and teased enviously, “That’s just too blissful.”

Lin Sifei smiled humbly and took the marker to sign her name.

She entered the venue and, with the staff’s guidance, found her seat.

Then came the long wait. She didn’t know the celebrities around her, so she didn’t bother with disingenuous small talk.

The Golden Flower Awards started with some of the less exciting categories, and the atmosphere in the hall wasn’t very lively. When they started announcing the lead acting awards, the mood instantly heated up.

“The winner for Best Actress is—Bai Su!” The presenter smiled and raised a hand. “Congratulations, Bai Su-xuemei.”

The presenter and Bai Su had gone to the same school, so he called her junior schoolmate.

Bai Su smiled and stood up as applause erupted.

Lin Sifei clapped along, only then realizing that Bai Su was sitting just behind and to the side of her.

Bai Su rose with a smile, wearing a gold, sequined fishtail gown. As she walked up the aisle and passed Lin Sifei, she suddenly opened her arms to her.

Surprised for a second, Lin Sifei reacted immediately, standing up to give her a hug.

    “Congratulations.”

“Thank you.” Bai Su smiled, let her go, and walked onto the stage.

Lin Sifei didn’t think much of it. She was probably just overjoyed and wanted to hug someone.

Bai Su was an all-around talented actress. After accepting the award, she personally sang a song.

Next up was the Best Newcomer Award. Lin Sifei straightened her back slightly.

On stage, they began to read the nominations. The camera panned to each nominee. Lin Sifei maintained a gentle smile throughout.

“Who will be the Best Newcomer? Everyone is so strong.”

Lin Sifei cursed inwardly. Obviously, I’m the strongest.

“Let’s not keep you in suspense. She is… Lin Sifei!”

The large screen played the clip of Lin Sifei crying alone in 《Light》.

Lin Sifei smiled and stood up. Unlike others who looked shocked, she elegantly walked onto the stage to accept her award.

“Wow, Sifei is so calm. Did you already guess it was you?”

Of course. Lin Sifei didn’t dare say that out loud. “No, I was just so excited I went past it, so I’m very calm instead. My mind is a complete blank right now.”

“Can you still give an acceptance speech then?”

Lin Sifei held the microphone and smiled. “Thank you to the crew, thank you to the audience, thank you to my fans, thank you to Luo Ke…”

“Alright, alright, let’s just watch the performance now.”

Lin Sifei laughed and walked off the stage, holding the heavy trophy.

She held the trophy and, during a break, took a picture to send to Luo Ke.

【Luo Ke: How much longer until it’s over?】

    【Lin Sifei: About forty minutes.】

Luo Ke acknowledged and said she would head over to pick her up.

Lin Sifei happily hugged her trophy and watched the performance.

Suddenly, all the lights in the hall went out, and the singer on stage fell completely silent. The venue erupted in a commotion.

A few lights came on one by one, and the host walked on stage. “Everyone, please don’t worry. We have some problems with the wiring. We’re working on fixing it, and it will be restored soon.”

Lin Sifei frowned, feeling anxious. Why is there a problem now? I don’t have much time!

The wiring was not fixed as quickly as the host had said. As time ticked by, Lin Sifei grew more and more anxious.

Finally, the lights came back on. The organizers couldn’t drag things out like before, and the remaining awards were presented much more quickly.

But even so, there wasn’t enough time. Lin Sifei’s hands were trembling with anxiety, but her face still wore a graceful smile.

She wanted to leave early, but that would look bad, especially without having informed the organizers.

Finally, when it was over, Lin Sifei immediately stood up and headed for the exit. She was running out of time!

The moment she stepped outside, camera flashes went off instantly. The reporters were blocking her way.

She had no choice but to stop and answer questions.

Luo Ke had arrived early but was told that due to the accident, the ceremony’s end time had been delayed.

She frowned slightly, looking at the watch on her wrist.

As the second hand turned, Luo Ke’s frown deepened.

    “It’s over!”

Luo Ke immediately looked up, but the end of the red carpet was swarmed with reporters. Security guards were holding back the outer perimeter, preventing entry.

Luo Ke looked anxiously at her watch, at the one-minute countdown on it, and opened the car door, intending to force her way through.

She stepped out of the car and heard the clamor of the reporters getting closer.

“Lin Sifei, how do you feel about winning the Best Newcomer Award?” “Is there anything you want to say to your fans?” “Is it true that you personally chose the script for 《Light》?”

Lin Sifei didn’t answer any of them, merely gathering her skirt and walking forward quickly.

She saw the person at the end of the red carpet from a distance, and joy immediately appeared on her face.

“Excuse me, my partner is here to pick me up!”

Lin Sifei smiled and politely declined the reporters.

Luo Ke raised her hand and waved at her, her hand clenched into a fist.

    Ten.

Lin Sifei lifted her skirt and ran toward her.

Her high heels didn’t affect her running speed at all.

Luo Ke stood at the end of the red carpet, watching the person running towards her, counting down silently in her mind.

    Five, four, three, two, one…

She suddenly flung up her arm. Her huge trench coat unfolded, swinging out in a circle and instantly covering Lin Sifei.

Lin Sifei leaped into the car and poked her cat head out from under the coat.

Luo Ke, still using the coat as a shield, grabbed the skirt, and pulled the car door shut.

Li Jing expertly slammed on the gas, and the car sped away.

    Perfectly coordinated.
