    New Show

    Arrogant Kitty

The variety show was airing, and everyone’s popularity was on the rise.

Lin Sifei was doing the best out of all of them. Her relationship was stable, and her prospects were promising.

Although Yan Yafei wanted to claim Lin Sifei had lied about her age, Lin Sifei directly posted a picture of her censored ID card, revealing the date.

Actually, Luo Ke had been the one to get her that ID card later on. Because she didn’t have household registration, everything had to be processed from scratch. It was a huge hassle to get it done, and Lin Sifei had estimated her age based on her physical condition.

【Lots of people have the wrong date on their ID cards.】

【An ID card doesn’t prove anything. If it can be decided by your jiejie’s word alone, then I could just as well say Yan Yafei did it on purpose to smear Sifei.】

Without any proof, it was useless for Yan Yafei to try and guide public opinion.

Li Tao1 seized the opportunity to counterattack. He found some marketing accounts2 and had them screenshot all the pictures of Yan Yafei calling other female artists “jiejie.” With things like pictures, you could always read something into them if you looked with a biased eye.

Even if Yan Yafei was just calling others “jiejie” normally, it still felt very green tea-like.3

Li Tao started it, and soon, other marketing accounts jumped on the trend, sensing the popularity. Nowadays, the “green tea” label really stirred people’s emotions.

Soon, people started sharing stories about the green teas in their own lives. “Jiejie” and “meimei” became classic passive-aggressive4 terms.

Lin Sifei watched the public discussion shift away from Yan Yafei and didn’t have anyone guide it further.

This was the most natural way. Yan Yafei had already left people with the impression of being a green tea, and now the discussion was gradually shifting to people’s everyday lives. Any attempt from Yan Yafei’s side to clarify would just make everyone recall the incident again and would likely have no effect.

Lin Sifei took a sip of her coffee and leisurely opened the magazine in front of her. It was an internal publication from Luo Corporation, featuring the jewelry they were about to release.

Because of Lin Sifei, Luo Ke no longer used any spokespersons. She only had one spokes-cat, and other artists were only given the title of ambassador. Now that the new jewelry line was about to launch, Lin Sifei had to shoot another set of promotional photos.

[Your eyes are the most brilliant gems in the world.]

The huge slogan was printed on the floor and tables of the photo shoot set.

The flash went off. Lin Sifei lay on a cushion, lifting her paws and exposing her belly to the camera. A single gem was nestled in the center of her soft paws.

“How much longer is the shoot going to take?” Luo Ke asked, standing to the side with her arms crossed.

    “There’s one last set.”

Luo Ke frowned slightly. “Let’s take a break first.”

She walked over to a table and picked up a bottle of water.

Lin Sifei hopped over to her side and let out a soft meow. The long shoot had tired her out a bit, too.

Luo Ke reached out, picked her up, and poured some water into the small cat bowl she had brought.

Lin Sifei stuck out her little pink tongue and lapped it up bit by bit.

After drinking, she nuzzled Luo Ke’s hand, stretched out her paws, and lay down on her lap to sleep, resting her head on Luo Ke’s hand.

Luo Ke smiled, gently patting her body as if coaxing a child to sleep.

People passing by all tiptoed, trying their best not to make a sound.

The photographer watched the person and the cat, unable to resist raising his camera and taking a picture of the two of them.

He looked at the photo, then opened his laptop almost impatiently and began to process it.

His assistant was tidying up nearby, changing the props for the next scene. Seeing that he wasn’t paying any attention, the assistant hesitated before approaching.

    “Cheng-ge, take a look.”

“Wait a minute!” Cheng-ge’s eyes were glued to the computer, his fingers flying as he edited the photo.

A moment later, he looked at the photo before him and let out a long breath.

He took his camera and walked over to Luo Ke. “President Luo, I…”

“Shh!” Luo Ke looked up sharply, pressing a finger to her lips.

His words caught in his throat. He followed Luo Ke’s gaze to the cat in her arms.

The cat must have been tired. It was lying in Luo Ke’s arms, sleeping soundly. Her belly rose and fell gently with each breath, and her stripes seemed to expand and contract, all of it a testament to her vibrant life.

Cheng-ge stood by for a long time. He went back to confirm that the set was ready before slowly making his way over again.

    “President Luo, everything is ready.”

Luo Ke nodded but kept her eyes on the cat in her arms.

Cheng-ge retreated and sat down. The surrounding staff had also finished their tasks and found places to sit, some playing on their phones, others resting. But they were all quiet.

Even people talking face-to-face were sending messages on their phones.

Lin Sifei had been lulled into a daze by Luo Ke’s comfortable cat-stroking skills. She had drifted off, but because she was still thinking about the photoshoot, she had kept a sliver of consciousness awake.

In a half-dreaming state, she suddenly realized that it had become quiet around her.

It felt strange for the once-chaotic place to suddenly fall silent.

Lin Sifei opened her eyes and saw Luo Ke’s white clothes. She froze for a moment, then stretched.

The moment she moved, Luo Ke looked down at her. “Awake?”

Lin Sifei nodded, pushing against Luo Ke’s stomach to stretch. The cat slid down her leg until it was hanging upside down.

Amused, Luo Ke scooped her up and placed her back on her lap. “Still sleepy?”

Lin Sifei yawned, nuzzled her hand, and opened her cat eyes wide.

Seeing that she was truly rested, Luo Ke let her go.

Lin Sifei jumped to the floor, shook out her fur, and walked back in front of the camera with an elegant catwalk.

At her movement, the staff members started moving again, and sound returned to the studio.

The last set of photos consisted almost entirely of close-ups of Lin Sifei’s eyes. Under the camera lens, her cat pupils looked like a secret, starry sky, tinged with a hint of loneliness.

After the shoot, Luo Ke picked up the cat, nodded to the staff, and prepared to leave.

Cheng-ge hurried after them. “President Luo.”

Luo Ke turned back, her eyes asking what he wanted.

Cheng-ge took out his camera and showed her the photo he had taken. “There’s a photography competition coming up. I was wondering if I could enter this photo?”

“I don’t have a problem with it.” Luo Ke looked down and gently bounced the cat in her arms. “Does Xiao Xiao agree?”

Lin Sifei’s head bobbed from the movement. She shot Luo Ke a glare and lifted a paw to tap the camera.

Luo Ke chuckled and looked at him. “She agreed.”

Cheng-ge was stunned for a second before he realized what was happening. Many shit-shoveling officers5 liked to treat their pets like children. “Thank you, President Luo.”

“Good luck.” Luo Ke nodded and walked out with the cat in her arms.

Lin Sifei sat in the passenger seat of the car, letting out a big, cat-like yawn.

The pale yellow light of the streetlamps shone into the car. Luo Ke glanced at her. “Was the shoot exhausting today?”

Lin Sifei shook her head. The intensity of the shoot was actually fine. She wasn’t that tired, but she felt a little sleepy.

She blinked, trying to wake herself up, and propped her front paws on the window to watch the traffic outside.

The headlights, streetlamps, and neon signs of the street were a dazzling blur. As she watched, the lights gradually melted into a single mass, and her body began to slump to one side.

Screech—! The car slammed to a halt.

Lin Sifei pitched forward. Startled, her eyes flew open, and her claws reflexively scrabbled at the door.

The smooth surface offered no grip, but she stopped anyway.

Luo Ke had reached out an arm to wrap around her waist, setting her back on the seat. Her brow was furrowed tightly. “You can fall asleep while standing? You almost fell off!”

Luo Ke looked a little fierce, and Lin Sifei lowered her head guiltily.

The car behind them honked, and Luo Ke started the car again.

    “We’re going to the hospital.”

Lin Sifei wanted to say it wasn’t necessary—she probably just needed some sleep—but the words died in her throat when she saw Luo Ke’s stern profile.

Fine, a trip to the hospital it is, she thought. It’ll put Luo Ke’s mind at ease.

Luo Ke parked the car and carried her into the hospital.

The doctor asked about her recent condition. Hearing that she had been shooting a commercial, he withdrew his hand. “It doesn’t look like there’s a problem. Let’s run some tests first.”

The results came back, and all her levels were normal.

“She’s probably just tired. Don’t schedule so much work for your cat in the future.” The doctor’s brow furrowed, clearly taking her for an unscrupulous person exploiting a cat for money.

Luo Ke didn’t argue and simply agreed.

Back in the car, she rubbed Lin Sifei’s head. “Did you hear that? You need to reduce your workload.”

What workload? Lin Sifei rolled her eyes. I’ve been at home for ages, okay?

But since Luo Ke was worried, she would just rest up.

Back home, Lin Sifei turned back into a person and sank lazily into the bathtub.

Luo Ke sat on the edge of the tub, scooping up water to splash on her shoulders.

Lin Sifei closed her eyes and wrapped her arms around Luo Ke’s. “Luo Ke, sleep with me tonight. And in the morning, can you not leave so early? Wake up with me?”

She had always dreamed of a morning where she could lie in bed, open her eyes, and see the other person there.

But Luo Ke always woke up too early, and she loved to sleep in.

“Okay. I won’t get up first tomorrow. I’ll stay with you.”

Lin Sifei smiled, nuzzled against her, and couldn’t help but yawn again.

She was too sleepy. After soaking for a little while, she got out.

Luo Ke wrapped a towel around her, dried her off, helped her into a nightgown, and led her by the hand to the bed.

Lin Sifei dove forward, snuggling into the covers. “Ah, so comfy!”

“Sit up and dry your feet, too.”

Lin Sifei sat up, dried her feet, and slipped under the covers.

Luo Ke lay down beside her and reached up to turn off the light.

The moment she was under the covers, Lin Sifei rolled into her arms and wrapped her arms around her waist.

Luo Ke smiled and hugged her back. The two of them faced each other, sleeping in an embrace.

They both went to bed very early that night. But on the other side of the city, someone was still frowning.

Yan Yafei was sitting in a small diner. He Li6 smiled as he brought her a bowl of noodles. “The shredded pork and vegetable noodles here are delicious. The broth is made from bone stock—it’s fragrant but not greasy. You should try it.”

Yan Yafei smiled, picked up her chopsticks, blew on the noodles, and took a bite.

Her eyes immediately curved. “It really is delicious.”

He Li smiled and picked up his own noodles. The steam rose and fogged up his glasses.

He laughed and took them off. “I forgot, I forgot.”

With his glasses off, he blinked. “I can’t even see you clearly.”

“Why are you looking at me? Just eat your noodles.” After she spoke, Yan Yafei lowered her head, and the smile vanished from her face.

She was used to dining in all sorts of high-end restaurants, yet He Li had only treated her to noodles at a small diner.

She bit her lower lip. He Li was truly kind and considerate. When she was with him, Yan Yafei almost believed she was actually in a relationship.

    And yet…

She looked at the noodles in front of her. She would never eat this kind of food.

The more she thought about it, the angrier she got. The diner’s TV was broadcasting the variety show 《The Journey》, and on it, she was trailing far behind. Feng Tingyun and Lu Heng were talking, while Lin Sifei was off to the side by herself. Off-camera, Luo Ke was watching her with a smile.

And her? She was pitifully tagging along behind them, staring at Lin Sifei’s back.

She couldn’t accept it. She felt that this wasn’t how things should be. Lin Sifei’s position should have been hers. She should have been the one at the center of attention.

Feng Tingyun, Lu Heng—all of them should have been revolving around her.

Yan Yafei watched the people on the screen, her vision gradually blurring.

“Xiao Fei? Why are you crying?” He Li had wolfed down his noodles, and when he put his glasses back on, he was startled to see her tears.

His voice drew the attention of the people around them. Yan Yafei quickly raised a hand to cover her face and wiped her tears with a tissue.

Seeing her hide her face, He Li realized she was a celebrity and couldn’t be recognized.

He quickly moved to sit beside her, blocking the probing stares.

Yan Yafei picked up her bag and stood up. “Let’s go.”

“Are you full?” He Li asked, looking at her nearly untouched noodles.

    “I already had dinner.”

Only then did He Li agree. He quickly stood up and left the diner with her.

“Why were you crying? Did someone bully you?”

Yan Yafei didn’t want to talk to him, but then she remembered he knew Gongbi.7 She bit her lip. “I feel so despicable. I look at Lin Sifei, and I want to be as successful as she is. I thought I could do it. I thought I was no worse than her. But we’re like two ends of a line segment. No matter how much I chase, she’s always the start of the line, and I’m the end.”

He Li stood frozen. “I heard that Lin Sifei got a role in Gongbi’s movie, but Gongbi isn’t very satisfied with her.”

A glint appeared in Yan Yafei’s eyes. “He’s not satisfied?”

“Yeah, but the director didn’t listen to him. He changed the script and kept her on.”

Yan Yafei’s grip on her bag tightened slightly. She lowered her head. “She can already challenge Gongbi, while I can only hope he’ll have a script for me.”

    She began to sob quietly.

He Li grew anxious and grabbed her arm. “I can do it!”

Yan Yafei looked at him with tear-filled eyes.

He Li pressed his lips together. “I used to help Gongbi polish his writing. I can write the script you want. I can help you reach greater heights.”

Yan Yafei’s eyes flickered. She lowered her lashes. “I’m a celebrity. The higher I climb, the more people will be watching me. Can you tolerate me being too busy with work to be with you, and us being unable to make our relationship public?”

“It’s okay.” He Li smiled and took her hand. “I understand. As long as I can be with you, I’m willing to stay hidden behind you.”

A smile touched Yan Yafei’s lips. She reached out and hugged him.

He Li smiled and held her tight. A glint flashed in Yan Yafei’s eyes.

She smiled, a genuinely happy smile.

Lin Sifei opened her eyes in bed to the sight of Luo Ke’s fair face.

Luo Ke was still asleep. Her long eyelashes fanned out like a tiny fan, casting a shadow on her skin in the light.

Lin Sifei smiled as she watched her, silently counting her eyelashes in her head.

She counted and counted, lost track, and had to start over.

After some time, Luo Ke’s eyelashes fluttered, and she slowly opened her eyes.

    “Still haven’t finished counting?”

Lin Sifei’s face flushed. She jerked back and sat up in bed. “You were awake?”

“I went back to sleep for a bit.”8 Luo Ke sat up too and pinched her cheek. “I’m not like you, you little lazy cat.”

Lin Sifei pouted and glared at her before throwing off the covers and climbing out of bed.

She slipped on her fluffy slippers and stretched.

Luo Ke watched her back, slowly raising a hand to lift a strand of her long hair.

Lin Sifei turned back in confusion, and the strand of hair slipped through Luo Ke’s fingers.

“Did you rest well? Are you still tired?” Luo Ke placed a hand on her forehead, checking if she was sick.

Lin Sifei shook her head and raised her arms. “I’m not sleepy at all now! I told you yesterday was just a one-off. I was sleepy but not tired. I guess I just overslept for once.”

She twisted her waist to show how healthy she was.

Luo Ke smiled and kissed her on the forehead. “Then let’s go downstairs and eat.”

Lin Sifei nodded and took her hand as they went downstairs.

There were spring rolls for breakfast today. Lin Sifei was so happy she ate a little too much and felt stuffed.

Luo Ke made her walk around the living room, rubbing her stomach in amusement. “You’re such a glutton. It’s not like you won’t get to eat them again.”

“I call this respecting the food,” Lin Sifei said, collapsing onto the sofa.

The phone beside her rang. Lin Sifei saw it was a call from Li Tao.

    “Hello?”

“The start date for 《Migration》 has been set,” Li Tao said. “Filming begins next week, so get ready. Also, 《Light》 has been submitted to the Golden Flower Film Festival. You have a very high chance of winning an award, so you can look forward to it.”

“I’m not just looking forward to it; I’ve already started preparing my award acceptance speech,”9 Lin Sifei said arrogantly.

Li Tao sighed helplessly. He was already used to her cockiness. But there was nothing he could do; she had the capital to be arrogant.

“It would be best if you can get along with the screenwriter. Gongbi is a lot of trouble.”

“I know, but I don’t think he wants to get along with me either. All I have to do is make an excellent movie.”

Hearing this, Li Tao didn’t press the matter. For an actor, their work truly did the talking. Ju Luo Culture10 wouldn’t let her be buried, either. As long as she was gold, she was bound to shine brightly.

After hanging up, Lin Sifei told Luo Ke about the filming schedule.

“I’ll take you on the first day to show you around. After that, we’ll just commute like normal.”

Luo Ke smiled and rubbed her head. “Then you’d better not work overtime too often.”

“I probably won’t,” Lin Sifei said uncertainly.

Luo Ke’s expression turned serious. “If you work overtime, I’ll go and watch over you from the side.”

Lin Sifei burst out laughing and collapsed onto her shoulder. “Well, we’ll be together either way. It’s a perfect chance for you to watch me act.”

The crew of 《Migration》 posted on Scarf,11 tagging the main actors.

Lin Sifei reposted it on her phone and took a look at the male lead. He was a relatively unknown actor, a newcomer who hadn’t been in the industry for long.

“Why did they choose a newcomer?” Luo Ke frowned.

Lin Sifei was also a bit confused. She poked Director Luo and tactfully asked if he was short on funds and had to give away the role.

Director Luo sent a string of ellipses, followed by a video.

Lin Sifei opened it and saw that it was from an actor’s audition.

The actor introduced himself with a completely blank expression, then bowed and began to act like a robot.

The male lead in 《Migration》 was a robot who only had a stiff smile and a blank expression, both of which he portrayed exceptionally well.

At the end of the video, Director Luo’s voice could be heard. “You can break character now. You don’t have to keep up that stiff smile.”

The young man’s smile vanished, replaced by a deadpan look. He said seriously, “I’ve already broken character. I just don’t have many expressions.”

Director Luo tested it himself, poking the guy with a small wooden stick. He discovered the newcomer really did have an expressionless face. He clapped his hands. “He’s the one.”

Lin Sifei fell back on the sofa, laughing. “So it’s a true color performance.”12

The actor was genuinely handsome, with well-defined features that perfectly fit the robot character.

    “It’s truly tailor-made.”

After exclaiming in admiration, she expressed her satisfaction with the male lead to Director Luo.

She opened the male lead’s Scarf and took a closer look at his name. “Lang Jingju? That’s a pretty rare surname.”

Lang Jingju’s Scarf was very simple. He often posted pictures of flowers and plants, giving off a strong retirement-life vibe.

However, based on his Scarf, Lin Sifei discovered he was also a photography enthusiast who had even won awards. If he hadn’t entered the entertainment circle, he would have done well as a photographer.

The production team created a group chat for the actors. As soon as Lin Sifei joined, she added Lang Jingju as a friend.

The friend request was quickly accepted.

    【Lin Sifei: Hi!】

    【Lang Jingju: Hello.】

【Lin Sifei: You’re still a student? Does your school let you go out to film?】

    【Lang Jingju: No.】

    Lin Sifei: …

She turned to Luo Ke. “Is this kid targeting me, or is this just his chatting style?”

    “He’s definitely just like that.”

Lin Sifei nodded slightly, thinking that someone as cute as her couldn’t possibly be disliked so quickly.

【Lin Sifei: Then how are you going to film?】

【Lang Jingju: I told the director my scenes will all be filmed after school and during holidays.】

    【Lin Sifei: Won’t that be a tight schedule?】

    【Lang Jingju: It’s okay.】

Lin Sifei thought the guy was really a man of few words, only answering what was asked. But his willingness to sacrifice his free time for filming showed he was a hardworking person.

【Lang Jingju: Excuse me, how should I address you?】

【Lin Sifei: You’re younger than me, so just call me ‘jie.’ Sifei-jie.】

This time, there was a long pause from the other side. Just as Lin Sifei was wondering what was wrong, a message came through.

【Lang Jingju: You’re okay with people calling you jiejie?】

    【Lin Sifei: Why wouldn’t I be?】

The other side went silent for a long time again. Lin Sifei looked at Luo Ke in confusion.

Luo Ke poured two glasses of water and handed one to her. “It’s probably because of the Yan Yafei incident.”

    Lin Sifei was speechless.

Sure enough, Lang Jingju replied, 【I heard some strange rumors.】

【Lin Sifei: Don’t just eat melon13 randomly! Yan Yafei really is older than me!】

    【Lang Jingju: Okay.】

Lin Sifei: I sense a hint of perfunctory agreement.

Lin Sifei immediately abandoned the cute newcomer and threw herself into Luo Ke’s arms for comfort.

Luo Ke patted her back. “You are very young. Don’t mind what other people say.”

Lin Sifei nuzzled her. “I don’t mind that! Everyone gets old. It’s just annoying to think that Yan Yafei will use this to accuse me of acting younger than I am in the future. Ugh!”

“Stop thinking about them,” Luo Ke said, wrapping an arm around her waist. “You’d be better off spending that energy on me.”

Lin Sifei smiled and pinched her cheek. “I already spend lots of time on you.”

    “I don’t think it’s enough.”

“Then that’s your problem,” Lin Sifei said, full of confidence. “You should reflect on yourself.”

Luo Ke laughed and gave her bottom a light slap.

Lin Sifei’s eyes went wide. She covered her butt, looking at her in shock. “You actually!”

Luo Ke immediately changed the subject. “Filming is starting soon. Don’t you need to go to the gym?”

    Lin Sifei’s expression changed slightly.

Luo Ke continued to stab with a knife,14 “It’s a sci-fi movie. Will you need to wear tight-fitting clothes?”

“Aaaah! Stop talking! I’ll go, alright?!”

Lin Sifei scrambled up, turned on the treadmill, and started running.

On the day of the 《Migration》 boot ceremony,15 the weather was a bit gloomy. Dark clouds swirled in the sky, threatening a downpour at any moment.

Director Luo was worried. If it rained, it would be very troublesome.

“Hurry, hurry, everyone get moving! Cover the equipment, just in case.”

In the end, for fear of rain, the boot ceremony was kept simple.

They burned some incense and took a group photo.

Lang Jingju looked at Director Luo. “Can I get a copy of the photo?”

The opening ceremony photo wasn’t a secret. The director waved a hand, telling him to get a backup copy himself.

Meanwhile, Lin Sifei was pulling Luo Ke along to tour the filming location.

This was a sci-fi movie filmed with a green screen, so almost all of it was indoors.

Director Luo switched on the lights. Under the white fluorescent glow, a massive indoor space was revealed. It was completely empty.

“We’ll be filming here. That over there will be a transparent window.”

Lin Sifei nodded, then asked hesitantly, “Um, Director Luo, I don’t have any scenes in a tight-fitting suit, do I?”

“Of course you do.” Director Luo put his hands on his hips. “This kind of drama more or less always has some. What, are you very conservative?”

“No.” Lin Sifei shook her head, her eyes welling with tears. “I was just wondering if I need to lose more weight.”

“You don’t need to lose weight; you’re already so thin.” Director Luo looked her over. “But you should build some muscle. The crew will have a trainer and a martial arts director.16 You can learn a bit from them.”

    “Okay.”

Lin Sifei had actually learned a little Taekwondo before, but it had been a long time since she practiced. Still, because of her past training, some fight scenes would look smoother.

“Right, if Gongbi comes looking for you, just ignore him,” Director Luo said with a wave of his hand.

    “Did he cause trouble?”

“He is trouble. You need to be prepared. As soon as the show is released, he’s going to start making a fuss.”

Lin Sifei’s eyes sparkled. She nodded eagerly. “I’ll definitely be careful!”

Director Luo gave her a strange look. “Why do you seem so happy about it?”

    “Do I? I don’t think so.”

The author has something to say:

“Do I? I don’t think so.” Kitty is innocent.
