    Fear

    Hugs and cuddles

Lin Sifei slept in very late the next day.

Luo Ke had left her a message saying she’d gone to the company to sign a contract and would probably be back around noon.

She stretched languidly, rolled over in bed, and wrapped the comforter around herself before fishing out her phone.

She opened Weibo and saw that the horror film production team had indeed made their official announcement.

She was the lead actress, and Bai Su was a special guest star.

Lin Sifei reposted it, acting cute with one of her custom cat emoji packs. She then clicked back on the production team’s Weibo and saw that they had tentatively titled the movie Shadow.

The corner of her mouth twitched, and she opened her message chat with Wang Zhixin.

【Lin Sifei: Why is this the movie title?】

    Wang Zhixin replied in seconds.

【Wang Zhixin: I originally wanted to call it Spirit From Behind,1 but that might not have passed censorship. So I thought about it, and what follows you from behind if not a shadow?】

His reasoning was sound, and she couldn’t refute it.

But the name was too plain. How could a horror movie have a title with so little prestige, with no hook to it?

So, she mercilessly rejected it, telling him and Liu Zheng to come up with something else.

Wang Zhixin ran off crying, clutching the movie title to his chest to go weep to Liu Zheng.

Unconsciously, Lin Sifei had already picked up Luo Ke’s bad habit of sending things back for a redo.

After rolling around in bed a couple more times, she ruffled her hair and sat up to wash her face and brush her teeth.

She had slept nearly until noon, so there was no need for breakfast. She would just wait for Luo Ke to come back and have lunch with her.

She stretched again, then turned back into a cat and lay on the balcony to sunbathe.

The view from the second-floor balcony was excellent, offering a clear line of sight to the main road in front of the residential community. She swished her tail, watching the people come and go on the main road: students on their way home from school, housewives returning from grocery shopping, office workers heading home for lunch…

All sorts of people, continuing on with their lives.

Lin Sifei loved watching them—observing with her eyes, guessing with her heart, and then portraying it all on screen.

Suddenly, a flash of gold appeared before her eyes.

She tilted her head in confusion. If she remembered correctly, there were no foreigners living in this community.

She narrowed her eyes and began to observe him curiously.

She hadn’t realized who it was at first, but one good look gave her a shock. Was that Erik? What was he doing here?

Taking advantage of being a cat, Lin Sifei boldly pressed herself against the glass to watch.

She saw Erik holding a slip of paper, checking the house numbers door by door.

He had an address. He was here to find someone.

Erik had always lived abroad. And because he was an aristocrat, he was arrogant with his nose in the air and extremely smug. His famous saying was that everyone else was just a pleb, unworthy of being his friend.

He shouldn’t have any friends in the country.

In that case, the person he was looking for was very interesting. It was most likely either her or Yuan Mo.

She narrowed her cat-like pupils, pawed her phone over, and found Luo Ke’s number, ready to dial at any moment.

Just as she was ready, she saw Erik stop in front of her and Luo Ke’s villa. He walked in, and a moment later, the doorbell rang.

Lin Sifei decisively dialed the number and changed back into a human, scrambling back into the bedroom.

    “Hello, Xiao Xiao?”

“Luo Ke, Luo Ke, Erik is at the door!”

Lin Sifei was a little scared. This guy had always been with Yan Yafei, and with his status as her ‘brother,’ he had probably long since sided with her and was determined not to let their association go.

And now he had found her home address. They usually never saw each other, fighting online at most, but an offline confrontation was terrifying.

The last time they’d met offline was during the variety show, when Yan Yafei had pushed her into the river.

Lin Sifei was scared to death, and her voice trembled as she spoke to Luo Ke.

    The doorbell kept ringing.

Luo Ke’s voice was grave. “Don’t open the door. I’m on my way back.”

    “Okay, okay.”

Lin Sifei hung up and locked the bedroom door as well. She got up, ran to the walk-in closet, and rummaged through a drawer to find Luo Ke’s dagger.

Luo Ke had faced a lot of danger in the past, especially as a child. To deepen her dependency, the Luo family had often hired people to kidnap her, only to then appear as saviors. This had led Luo Ke to develop the habit of hiding a knife under her pillow.

After living with her for so long, Lin Sifei had finally managed to break her of that habit and put the knife away. She never thought she’d have to use it today.

Lin Sifei took a deep breath, telling herself not to be afraid.

    Suddenly, the doorbell stopped ringing.

Lin Sifei dove onto the bed, grabbed her tablet, and connected to the home security system.

She immediately switched to the camera at the front door and, sure enough, saw Erik’s blond hair. But standing behind him was a man in a suit.

    It was Yuan Mo.

At that moment, Lin Sifei was instantly moved. It was a good thing she hadn’t decided to exterminate him completely back then. Although she had spared him partly on account of Shuaishuai, she now decided to let go of the book’s plot entirely.

She quickly picked up her phone and sent Yuan Mo a message.

【Lin Sifei: He’s with Yan Yafei! I didn’t invite him! I don’t know him! Help me get rid of him! Thank you so much!!!】

【Lin Sifei: Remember to say I’m not home!】

Yuan Mo felt his phone vibrate. He took it out, glanced at it, and smiled.

“Miss Lin and President Luo have a good relationship. They probably went to the company together,” Yuan Mo said, putting his phone away. “Why don’t you come back another day?”

Erik frowned slightly. “Do you know her?”

Yuan Mo smiled and raised an eyebrow. “You could say I’m her neighbor.”

“Then I’ll take the liberty of asking to wait for them at your house,” Erik said, lifting his chin slightly with a hint of arrogance.

Yuan Mo’s brow furrowed. This person was incredibly rude.

“I’m sorry, but that’s not appropriate. We don’t know when they’ll be back. They might not return until evening, or they might even go out on a date and not come back for a few days.”

    “I can pay rent.”

Yuan Mo sneered, unleashing his full domineering president2 aura. “I’m not interested in renting.”

Erik scowled at him, as if he thought Yuan Mo didn’t know what was good for him.

Yuan Mo let out another cold laugh and took out his phone to dial. “Hello? Security? There’s an unidentified person in front of Building 13 in Area A, and he’s harassing a resident. How did you screen him? How could you let him in?”

The security office immediately apologized and said they would send someone over right away.

Erik’s eyes widened. Before he could even argue, a black car drove up.

The car door opened. Li Jing quickly got out of the driver’s seat, and Luo Ke emerged from the back.

Seeing the two of them, Erik’s eyes lit up. “Luo Ke, is Lin Sifei with you?”

Luo Ke glanced at Yuan Mo before her gaze fell on Erik. “If Yan Yafei sent you, go back and tell her to behave herself. I’ll be sending her back to where she belongs soon enough.”

Her words were brazen. Erik heard the utter disdain in her tone and stepped forward angrily.

But he had only taken a single step before Li Jing reacted swiftly, slamming him to the ground and pinning his wrists behind his back.

Erik cried out in pain, so angry that he reverted to his native tongue, letting out a long string of English curses.

Just then, the security guards also rushed over. They looked a little surprised when they saw it was Erik.

Luo Ke frowned slightly. “The security in this community has always been good. Why did you let him in?”

Hearing a resident asking for an explanation meant there was room for discussion. The security guard felt a small sense of relief. “This morning, we received a call from another resident who said a blond Englishman named Erik would be coming to visit him. We verified his identity, and it was indeed him.”

Hearing this, Luo Ke let out a soft laugh and glanced at Yuan Mo. “It seems she has other backers in this community. She doesn’t place much trust in you, her former ‘brother.'”

Yuan Mo’s expression turned ugly. “Which household was it?”

The security guard hesitated. “That’s resident information. We can’t disclose it.”

“Is that so? Then we’ll call the police and handle this through the courts,” Luo Ke said, her entire being radiating a chilling aura. “His guest came knocking on my door and tried to attack me.”

Sweat beaded on the guard’s forehead, but he couldn’t break the rules.

Li Jing prompted him at the right moment, “You can contact that resident and inform them of the situation here. You’d better mention that it involves President Luo and President Yuan.”

The guard nodded repeatedly. Right, he was caught in the middle and couldn’t please either side, so he might as well let the residents negotiate among themselves.

He immediately took out his phone, found the call record, and dialed the number.

Soon, he handed the phone to Luo Ke. “He wants to confirm your identity.”

Luo Ke took the phone. “Hello, this is Luo Ke.”

Her voice was cool and young, a rarity in the business world. The person on the other end confirmed her identity almost as soon as she spoke and said with a placating laugh, “President Luo, is there something I can help you with?”

“I thought the security guard made it clear to you just now.” Luo Ke knew all too well how these people shirked responsibility, and her voice grew even colder. “Your guest attempted to assault me. My bodyguard has already subdued him.”

“My guest? I don’t have any guests.”

“The call was made from your number, so naturally, I’m coming to you. As for who actually made the call and who let him in, that’s your business to investigate. I’m only holding you responsible.”

Luo Ke wasn’t going to bicker with this person. She wasn’t a judge who had to present evidence and reason through every detail.

She had her target, and she wasn’t about to let him get off easy.

The man on the other end hadn’t expected Luo Ke to be so unreasonable and started to sound anxious.

But Luo Ke had no desire to waste words. “President Yuan also has something to say to you.”

She handed the phone directly to Yuan Mo. The person on the other end was already panicking.

Yuan Mo only asked one question. “When did you get to know Yan Yafei?”

He didn’t think Yan Yafei had cheated on him—after all, they had never made things official, so he could just chalk it up to his own unrequited feelings. But the subsequent events had caused a huge stir. It was one thing for these people to laugh at him, but for them to now crawl over his head and blatantly provoke him was another matter entirely.

“President Yuan, President Yuan, please don’t misunderstand. I really didn’t do anything.”

“Of course I’m not misunderstanding. I just hope that nothing like this ever happens again.”

After hanging up, Yuan Mo handed the phone back and squatted down to look at Erik, who was still pinned to the ground. “Otherwise, you and I can have a nice, long chat.”

Luo Ke didn’t care what they were going to chat about. She used her fingerprint to quickly unlock the door.

    “Xiao Xiao?”

Wrapped in a blanket, Lin Sifei ran down the stairs and threw herself into Luo Ke’s arms. “I was scared to death!”

Luo Ke held her tight. “It’s okay now, it’s okay.”

She held Lin Sifei, kissing her cheeks again and again.

“We can’t let Yan Yafei continue like this. Does she have other helpers?”

“I think so. They seem to be from abroad, too. I remember that after Erik appeared, the plot started to go international.”

A smile touched Luo Ke’s lips. She cupped Lin Sifei’s face. “Then I’ll just trap her here so she can never leave.”

Lin Sifei wrapped her arms around Luo Ke’s waist and didn’t object. She hadn’t taken Yan Yafei seriously before, but now it seemed the woman was growing more and more impatient, unable to tolerate anyone who stood in her way.

“Yan Yafei is filming right now, and I’m about to join my film set soon,” she mumbled in a low voice. “That’s about a month. I think we can use this opportunity to get everything ready.”

“I’ll contact some people and have them draw up a comprehensive plan.”

“Actually, we don’t necessarily have to plan it step-by-step. Public opinion seems easy to control, but it’s actually the most difficult. The most important thing is to be adaptable.”

She paused, then remembered something. “We have to wait until Yan Yafei finishes filming and the TV station buys the show. We invested in it, after all!”

Seeing her so full of spirit, Luo Ke couldn’t help but chuckle. “You little money-grubber.”

Lin Sifei smiled and continued to lean on her shoulder. “When I join the film set, let’s stay in a hotel, just like before.”

    “Okay.”
