    The Outing

    Happy Fun Time

First thing in the morning, Luo Ke got up to prepare everything they would need for their outing.

Because Lin Sifei was dying to go on a picnic, Luo Ke had Auntie Wu prepare some easy-to-carry food and also packed some snacks.

“What kind of picnic blanket do you like?” Luo Ke asked Lin Sifei.

Lin Sifei came over to look at the patterns on the blankets and finally chose one with a small bear design.

It was adorable, a perfect match for her.

Luo Ke had guessed she would like this style, so she brought the small bear blanket along.

The countryside was actually quite far. It took Luo Ke over an hour to drive there. But she had to admit, this place was truly remote, with almost no one around.

“Where is this place? Why is there nobody here?”

Luo Ke led her by the hand along a small constructed path. “This is a scenic area that’s still under development, so it’s only semi-open. It hasn’t been advertised yet. Aside from people from nearby coming for a walk and investors coming to relax, no one else comes here.”

A gust of wind blew, nearly lifting Lin Sifei’s hat off her head.

She let out a small cry and laughingly pressed down on the top of her hat.

“The air here is so nice. There’s grass and trees everywhere.”

She swung her small basket and ran forward cheerfully.

Luo Ke watched her with a smile. “Be careful, don’t fall.”

Lin Sifei made a face at her. “I’m not a kid. Could I really fall on flat ground?”

The words had barely left her mouth when her left foot tripped her right, and she gave a live performance of falling on flat ground. Fortunately, she was right next to a patch of soft earth and grass, so the fall didn’t hurt much.

Luo Ke jumped in fright and hurried over. “Did you hurt yourself?”

Lin Sifei’s palms were damp with dew from the blades of grass. She smiled and straightened her hat. “I’m fine, I’m fine.”

She got up, patted the dead grass and dirt off her clothes, and picked up her basket.

Luo Ke trotted after her. The scenic area had wooden platforms built, but the two of them decided to spread their blanket on the grass anyway.

The blanket was laid over the soft grass, and sitting on it felt like being gently supported.

“This is so comfortable,” Lin Sifei said, touching the ground through the blanket with a sense of novelty.

Luo Ke opened the bamboo basket and took out the snacks and other items, arranging them on the blanket.

“Hm?” She looked strangely at a cloth object in her hands. “This looks like a kite.”

She smiled, unfolded it, and handed it to Lin Sifei. “Want to play?”

“We just had breakfast at home, so I don’t feel like eating right now.” Lin Sifei took the kite, assembled the frame in the middle, and took out the kite string.

    “Did Auntie Wu prepare this?”

“Probably.” Luo Ke rummaged around some more and found many other toys, including a magnifying glass.

She turned it over, puzzled. “What’s the magnifying glass for? Starting a fire?”

“Maybe it’s for observing things,” Lin Sifei guessed with a laugh after searching for a moment. “This can’t be the gear Auntie Wu’s kid takes on outings, can it?”

It looked very much like it. Luo Ke smiled and brushed her hair. “It suits you perfectly.”

Lin Sifei shot her a glare. “No, it doesn’t! I’m an adult now.”

With that, she stood up, kite in hand, and ran forward. The kite flew up for a moment, then nosedived straight into the ground.

Lin Sifei pouted and picked up the kite to try again.

Luo Ke walked over. “You should stop torturing the kite.”

“How is this torture!” Lin Sifei was very displeased. “I can obviously get it to fly. I was just out of practice before. I’ll have it up in no time.”

“This kite isn’t the best quality. Be careful you don’t break the front of it.”

Lin Sifei nervously checked the kite. After confirming it was fine, she huffed, “It won’t break. I’m about to get it flying.”

“So you’re just going to let me watch?” Luo Ke took the kite. “Can’t you let me feel a little involved?”

Only then did Lin Sifei purse her lips, feeling that she had a point. She couldn’t just exclude her.

“Alright, do you want to hold the string or the kite?”

“I’ll hold the string.” Luo Ke smiled. “Actually, I’ve never flown a kite before. I don’t know how.”

Lin Sifei’s eyes widened slightly, then she remembered the environment Luo Ke grew up in. She broke into a smile. “I’ll teach you.”

“You hold the string, and I’ll run with you. Don’t let out any line yet. Don’t run too fast, but not too slow either. You have to let me keep up.”

“Okay.” Luo Ke stood smiling on the grass. Lin Sifei held the kite, pulling the string to create some distance.

    “Ready!”

Hearing her voice, Luo Ke started to run forward. She raised her hand, feeling the pull on the string.

“A little faster,” Lin Sifei directed from behind.

Luo Ke picked up the pace slightly.

“Liftoff!” Lin Sifei’s laughter rang out.

She wanted to turn and look, but Lin Sifei quickly shouted, “It’s not flying yet! Keep running!”

Luo Ke continued running forward. Lin Sifei caught up to her and took her hand. “Pull the string up slowly like this, and the kite will climb higher.”

With Lin Sifei teaching her hand over hand, the kite was soon flying high. Its orange color was striking against the blue sky.

    “Haha, it’s flying!”

Lin Sifei watched the kite happily and urged Luo Ke to let out a little more string.

Luo Ke felt the pull of the line in her hand. Flying a kite had a strange magic to it. Though it was just the tedious task of getting it airborne and holding the string, she found she couldn’t let go.

Lin Sifei laughed heartily beside her.

The wind started to die down. The kite string went slack, and the kite in mid-air began to fall straight down.

“Hey, hey, hey!” Lin Sifei shouted. “Run, run, run!”

Luo Ke quickly started running again, pulling the kite back up.

“It didn’t fall, haha.” Luo Ke couldn’t help but laugh as she looked at Lin Sifei.

Lin Sifei stared at the kite, smiling and nodding.

The wind blew her long hair into her face, and she tucked it behind her ear with an annoyed flick.

Luo Ke watched her profile and smiled faintly.

“I want to fly a kite too!” a noisy voice shouted as two small children ran onto the grass.

Behind the children were two adults, presumably their parents.

Soon, two other kites were rising into the air.

The two children were a bit competitive. Seeing that Luo Ke and Lin Sifei’s kite was flying high, they wanted to fly theirs just as high.

The kites flew higher and higher, but from a distance, it was hard to compare them since the kites themselves were different sizes.

A child came running over, pulling his kite string.

Lin Sifei quickly raised her hand. “Don’t get so close, the lines will get tangled.”

The child paid her no mind, pouting as he ran toward them.

His kite wobbled behind him. Just as he stood still, the wind shifted slightly, and the kite began to fall.

The child yanked on the string, but it was no use. The kite was completely out of control, swaying wildly from side to side.

Lin Sifei was especially nervous, afraid the kites would crash into each other.

After their kites nearly got tangled several times, Lin Sifei’s cheeks puffed out. “Luo Ke, I’m a little hungry. Let’s fly it again later.”

Luo Ke knew the child was annoying, but there was no need to argue with a kid. She said, “Okay,” and slowly began to reel in the kite string.

“Hahaha, you lost! You’re scared! Cowards! Nya nya nya!”

Lin Sifei completely ignored the two children. The more you paid attention to kids like that, the more they acted up.

After putting the kite away, Lin Sifei pulled Luo Ke back to their picnic blanket.

Without realizing it, they had run quite a distance while flying the kite, and it took them a while to get back.

Sitting on the blanket, Lin Sifei caught her breath. “I didn’t feel it before, but now that I’m sitting down, I’m so tired.”

“You haven’t been getting enough exercise lately,” Luo Ke said, handing her a water bottle.

Lately, Luo Ke had been worried that Lin Sifei wasn’t getting enough nutrition, so she hadn’t dared to let her exercise too much. Although Lin Sifei hadn’t quite turned into a salted fish, she did get tired after running for a while.

“Auntie Wu made sandwiches.” Luo Ke handed one to her.

Lin Sifei took it and opened it. “She added so much ham.”

“That’s because you love it.” Luo Ke smiled and took out other things, including sushi. It was clear Auntie Wu had prepared plenty.

“Auntie Wu’s cooking is so delicious.” Lin Sifei took a bite of her sandwich and glanced at Luo Ke. “Your cooking is delicious too.”

Luo Ke smiled. She had specifically learned to make cat food before, worried that the cat wasn’t eating enough. She hadn’t learned to cook normal dishes because she felt she couldn’t compare to Auntie Wu in the short term. There was no need to lower the quality of their food just for the sake of romance.

Especially for a foodie like Lin Sifei. If she really replaced Auntie Wu, Lin Sifei would probably cry.

After finishing the sandwich and enjoying the breeze, Lin Sifei couldn’t resist wanting a snack.

She opened a bag of snacks and immediately scooted over to Luo Ke, wanting to share.

She didn’t really know why, but she always felt that food shared with Luo Ke tasted exceptionally good.

She had mentioned it to Luo Ke before, but Luo Ke insisted it was just because she enjoyed the thrill of snatching food. But she didn’t think that was it; it wasn’t like they were fighting over it.

In any case, whatever the reason, sharing snacks with Luo Ke had become a habit.

Enjoying the breeze, drinking tea, and eating snacks. Lin Sifei truly felt that this was what happiness was all about. It was so comfortable.

However, the comfort didn’t last long. The noisy shouts of the children returned.

Because Luo Ke and Lin Sifei had stopped flying their kite, the two children stopped as well.

They came over with their snacks. “My snack is super delicious. It’s imported from abroad. You’ll never get to eat this.”

Lin Sifei was speechless. She was very picky about her snacks and basically only ate ones that suited her taste. She hadn’t found many foreign snacks that she really liked; either they were similar to domestic ones, or there were substitutes.

Only a fool would show off with something like that.

Lin Sifei looked at the two little fools in front of her and then silently turned to Luo Ke. “You said there wouldn’t be many people here.”

Luo Ke was also getting a headache. She stood up and walked over to the children’s parents to negotiate with them, hoping they would manage their children and not disturb their date.

“Do you own this piece of land? What’s wrong with my kid talking? This place is huge. If you’re not happy, then you can leave.”

“It looks to me like you don’t have many snacks. Would you like to take some of ours? They’re all imported, taste great, and are more hygienic than the ones from here.”

Hearing this, Luo Ke pressed her temples, said nothing more, and turned to leave.

Lin Sifei saw her return alone and burst out laughing. “Luo Ke, you’re so naive. Haven’t you ever heard the saying, ‘Behind every bear child is a bear parent’?”1

“I don’t know what these people are thinking.” Luo Ke felt that even though they were all human, she simply couldn’t understand the other party’s thought process.

Lin Sifei was already packing up. “Why don’t we find another spot? Even if the kids don’t bother us here, there are other people. It’s not convenient to do… anything.”

Luo Ke glanced at her. “What do you want to do?”

“I don’t want to do anything,” Lin Sifei said with an innocent face, then couldn’t help but break into a smile.

The smile had just appeared on her face when a clod of dirt suddenly hit her on the head.

“Ah!” Lin Sifei reflexively raised her hand to shield her head, luckily blocking the next clod.

The two children were laughing, holding small plastic shovels. There was a hole in the ground where they were digging up dirt to throw at them.

This time, Lin Sifei was thoroughly enraged. She pushed her hair back and walked toward the children.

The children laughed and made faces, then ran off with their shovels. “Nya nya nya, the ugly monster can’t catch us!”

Lin Sifei was so angry she laughed out loud. “I’m an ugly monster? Then you two must be ugly-times-ten monsters. You’re much uglier than me. Look at those flat noses and those faces like round pancakes. Are your eyes so small you can even open them?”

In truth, the two children were quite good-looking, with double eyelids and big eyes. They looked rather cute and were probably praised often, which was why they were so quick to call someone else an ugly monster.

If there was one thing Lin Sifei had never lost at, it was her beauty score.

At her words, the two children’s lips trembled, and their eyes turned red.

Lin Sifei made a face back at them. “Oh my, why are you crying? You’re allowed to call others ugly, but others aren’t allowed to say it to you?”

The two children threw their heads back and started wailing. One of them even threw his shovel straight at Lin Sifei.

Lin Sifei quickly dodged. Although the plastic shovel wasn’t heavy, the front edge was still quite sharp. If she got scraped by accident, the injury wouldn’t be light.

“You rotten kids!” She reached out to grab them.

The children ran crying to their parents.

“Hey, what are you doing?” The parents had been sitting together, billing and cooing, and were annoyed at being interrupted. They glared at the troublemaker.

Lin Sifei put her hands on her hips. “Your kids hit me with clods of dirt.”

“It was dirt, not rocks. It’s not like she’s bleeding. Do you really have to pick on children?” the woman said, glaring at her resentfully.

Lin Sifei’s lips curled into a smile. “Your kids hit someone, and not only do you not apologize, you’re blaming me?”

The man in the white shirt next to her frowned in displeasure. He took out his wallet and pulled out a stack of bills. “Here, take this money. Is that enough? Don’t bother us.”

Lin Sifei was so angry she actually laughed. “I don’t need your money. But your children damaged the lawn and attacked a visitor. I think it’s necessary to contact security.”

The man sneered. “Go ahead and call them. I’d like to see if they’ll kick us out over a trivial matter like this.”

Lin Sifei took out her phone, found the number, and dialed.

It was a number Luo Ke had given her on the way there, just in case she ran into any trouble. She could call for help directly instead of running around aimlessly.

Lin Sifei had laughed at her for it at the time, because she was so clingy they would never be apart.

As it turned out, they weren’t separated, but the number came in handy for something else.

Lin Sifei made the call while the man and woman watched with expressions of people enjoying a show.

Not long after she hung up, a white patrol car drove over. Two security guards and a man in a suit with a beer belly ran over, holding a phone.

He first saw Luo Ke and nodded with a fawning expression. “You must be President Luo. A pleasure, a pleasure.”

Luo Ke gave a slight nod. The man then looked at Lin Sifei. “Was it you who was looking for our President Chen?”

    Lin Sifei nodded.

The man immediately told the person on the phone with a smile that he had found her and would handle it right away.

After hanging up, the man smiled and nodded at Lin Sifei.

Lin Sifei pointed at the group of people standing over there. “It was them.”

“Right, right.” The man looked over, his expression sinking. He walked over and started scolding them. “Do you people know this is a natural scenic area? Even though it’s a tourist spot, the brochure clearly states that you cannot damage the vegetation. What were you trying to do, digging such a big hole?”

The man in the white shirt, holding his child’s hand, stared with wide, astonished eyes. “Old Deng, have your wings hardened?2 How dare you speak to me like that? I see you don’t want your job anymore!”

The man with the beer belly wasn’t intimidated in the least. He sneered, “I think it’s you who doesn’t want his job anymore. President Chen has already said that anyone who damages the vegetation must be kicked out. If you have a problem with that, you can take it up with President Chen directly.”

He waved his hand, and the two security guards came over to escort the people out.

The guards were tall and burly. The man in the white shirt flinched but stuck his neck out stubbornly. “I can walk myself. It’s not like I’m dying to be here.”

He pulled his child and started to leave. The woman also took her child and followed behind, her face full of resentment.

    “Wait,” Luo Ke said suddenly.

The beer-bellied man immediately put on a smile and looked at her.

Luo Ke pointed at the two adults. “Are they a married couple?”

    The man’s face twitched. “No.”

Luo Ke’s expression showed she understood. “I’m very curious to see the looks on your respective spouses’ faces when they find out about this.”

Both of them showed expressions of alarm. The children looked up in confusion at their respective father and mother.

“We were in the wrong about this. We’re truly sorry,” the man in the white shirt said, lowering his head as if enduring a great humiliation.

Lin Sifei linked her arm with Luo Ke’s and looked at her with a smile. “Don’t be like that. We just happened to find out about someone’s affair. Such an irresponsible act is something their other half needs to know about. As for the outcome, that’s for them to decide.”

After she spoke, the people in front of her were so angry they looked like they wanted to lunge forward. The security guards immediately blocked them. “Please leave at once.”

The man glared furiously at the woman. “This is all your fault! You can’t even watch the kids!”

“You were the one who said no one comes here!” the woman retorted in a shrill voice.

The group left, pulling and shoving each other.

Lin Sifei’s mouth twitched helplessly. She reached up and scratched her hair, feeling like there might still be bits of dirt in it. Luo Ke helped her brush it out.

After a few tries, Lin Sifei got annoyed and waved her hand dismissively. “Forget it, I’ll wash it when we get home. Let’s just have fun for now.”

She glanced at Luo Ke’s hand and walked back to the picnic blanket, passing by the hole the children had dug.

They had also picked up the children’s plastic shovels earlier. Looking at the hole, Lin Sifei propped her chin on her hand. “Why don’t we fill it in first? The grass here is so resilient, it should grow back.”

Luo Ke nodded. The two of them took the small shovels and filled the dirt back in. The children had thrown some of the dirt clods, so they couldn’t fill the hole completely.

“The rest will have to recover on its own.”

Lin Sifei nodded. She sat with her on the blanket, ate some more, and then lay back to watch the clouds in the sky.

    “There are clouds today.”

“Mhm, it’s partly cloudy. Not too hot and not too cold.”

Lin Sifei let out a chuckle and turned her head to look at her. “Did you specifically check the weather forecast?”

“Of course. Otherwise, what if we ran into a rainy day? This rare outing together would have been ruined.”

Lin Sifei smiled and hugged her waist, nuzzling against her happily.

It was already dark by the time they got home from their outing.

Lin Sifei stretched lazily, turned into a cat, and curled up on the sofa. She pulled a number out of her blocklist.

The moment she did, a call came in.

She changed back into a person, wrapped herself in a blanket, and answered the phone.

As soon as the call connected, Li Tao’s cold laugh came through. “Finally decided to let me out of your blocklist?”

Lin Sifei felt a little guilty. Usually, Li Tao was the roaring type. Now that he was speaking in such a cold, clipped tone, she could feel his anger level was about to max out.

She immediately cowered. “I was busy, so…”

“You were out having fun with President Luo again, weren’t you,” Li Tao said with another cold laugh.

Lin Sifei hugged her little blanket tighter, took a deep breath, and said with righteous indignation, “Yeah, I was. I’ve finished filming my movie. Can’t I relax a little?”

“You still want to relax.” Li Tao sighed. “You need to be a little more career-minded. Did you know that Yan Yafei has landed another major production? I looked into it a bit. From the director to the screenwriter, everyone is top-tier. And the head writer is He Li, who had supposedly already sealed his pen.3 He was known as a gifted scholar4 back in the day. Don’t you feel any sense of crisis?”

Lin Sifei lay on the sofa, looking at her toes and wiggling them out of boredom.

“I think you have a misunderstanding about me.” She rolled herself up in the blanket. “Although I don’t like Yan Yafei, I’ve never considered her a competitor. We were never on the same path to begin with. I don’t care what resources she gets. The higher she climbs, the harder she’ll fall. I’m actually looking forward to her reaching the very top, and then with a splat, she’ll fall to her death.”

There was silence on the other end of the line. After a while, Li Tao took a deep breath. “Whatever you say. But your foundation is still unstable right now. I’ve accepted quite a few decent scripts. I’ll send them to your email in a bit. Take a look.”

“I know,” Lin Sifei sighed, feeling like a pitiful corporate slave.5

After hanging up, she climbed off the sofa. Remembering there were probably still bits of dirt in her hair, she quickly jumped up to take a shower.

She shot off so fast that Luo Ke, who was cutting fruit, heard the commotion and turned to ask, “What are you doing?”

“Showering!” Lin Sifei paused mid-step. “Remember to clean the sofa.”

Luo Ke, holding the fruit knife, shook her head helplessly.

At the same time, news that Yan Yafei had landed a major production spread everywhere.

Bai Su pressed her temples and let out a cold laugh. “A production of this scale, and I didn’t hear a single word about it.”

The assistant beside her stood with her head lowered, quietly arranging flowers in a vase.
