Two People Together Need to Mutually Adjust
Not that kind of adjustment!
Lin Sifei let out a few meows, protesting Luo Ke’s inhuman behavior.
She hopped out of the office door. Zhao Min saw her and let out a surprised, “Huh? Xiao Xiao, you came along too? I didn’t even see you.”
She came over, smiling, and gave her a couple of good pets.
Lin Sifei fluffed her fur, lifted her head high, and paced back and forth on Zhao Min’s desk as if she were a leader on an inspection tour.
Ding—Elevator arriving.
Hearing the sound of the elevator, Lin Sifei immediately leaped off the desk and scurried inside in a few quick movements.
Zhao Min waved with a smile. “Xiao Xiao is off on patrol again.”
Everyone in the company knew Lin Sifei. Seeing her sitting primly in the elevator, they all smiled and greeted her.
Lin Sifei let out a meow and swished her tail.
“Elevator going down.”
Lin Sifei followed the crowd, randomly got off at a certain floor, and trotted out with a catwalk.
The people around her showed surprise on their faces when they saw her, and one by one, they took out their phones to take pictures.
Lin Sifei feigned indifference as she struck a pose, striving for 360 degrees of flawless beauty. However, there were a few too many people taking pictures today. After posing for a while, she couldn’t take it anymore. Her legs felt a bit weak from holding the position, so she quickly ran off.
She ducked into the shadow of a desk and overheard some employees talking.
“Someone saw Xiao Xiao!”
“Really! Over by the elevators? If I’d known, I would have gone over too.”
Lin Sifei tilted her head, a little confused. She was very popular in the company, but she didn’t think so many people liked taking her picture.
Curiously, she crept a little closer, trying to listen in on a few more conversations.
After a moment, she more or less understood that it was because of the jewelry endorsement, but hadn’t she been the endorser for a long time now?
Just as she was wondering, music started playing from a television in the office area. She looked up and saw her own feline face, a piece of jewelry perched atop her head.
It was a vlog, a montage of videos and photos. There was no one else in it; it was a vlog dedicated solely to her.
“President Luo really loves Xiao Xiao. She actually made it the spokesperson1 for the entire line and is running so many ad videos.”
“I heard some of the videos were shot privately by President Luo. They’re really well shot, no worse than a professional photographer’s.”
Lin Sifei looked up at the vlog, which included a clip of her rolling around on a lawn. She recognized it at a glance as the lawn in their residential complex. She couldn’t even remember when she had gone out to play there, let alone that Luo Ke had filmed it.
There was also a video of her sleeping, unconsciously batting a jeweled ball around in her paws. She remembered being bored at the time, and Luo Ke had given it to her to play with. The jewelry wasn’t top-of-the-line, but it wasn’t cheap either.
Clip after clip, scenes from her professional photoshoots were interwoven with snippets from her daily life, symbolizing a person’s work and home life.
“The design concept is quite good. The endorsed product line has jewelry for both men and women, and the themes cover both professional and domestic vows. It encompasses almost everyone and every purpose. To the average person, you can’t tell the gender or status from a cat’s appearance, so it’s suitable for everyone.”
The person speaking nearby was probably a manager, giving a brief analysis.
However, Lin Sifei barely noticed any of that. She only saw the clips Luo Ke had filmed of her. They were overflowing with the love between them. Luo Ke had always been watching her, accompanying her from behind, even when she hadn’t seen it.
“Meowr—” she let out a low cry.
She was so moved!
Swoosh— In an instant, every gaze in the room focused on her. Lin Sifei shivered and slowly turned her head.
All eyes were fixed on her, the stares so intense they felt like they were scorching her fur.
She let out another meow, followed by a hiccup from the fright.
“It’s Xiao Xiao.”
“Quiet down, don’t scare it.”
Lin Sifei: Thanks, I’m already scared.
The video on the TV ended and the screen automatically went black, beginning a five-second countdown to switch inputs.
The moment the sound vanished, it was as if someone had pressed the play button on reality again.
Lin Sifei kicked off with her hind legs and bolted straight for the elevators.
“Ah! It ran off!”
“Quick, take a picture! What are you standing there for?!”
Fortunately, everyone was still on the clock, so no one chased after her.
Lin Sifei’s entire cat body went limp in the elevator. She let out a long sigh of relief. Looking at the advertisement panels on either side of the elevator, she found that they, too, featured large photos of her.
One photo deliberately emphasized her cat pupils, making her look exceptionally cute.
Lin Sifei stretched out a paw and tilted her head, admiring herself.
My, oh my, I really am so beautiful. I have so many fans already.
She ran back to Luo Ke’s office and pounced on her the moment she entered.
Luo Ke grunted from the impact and slapped her on the rump. “Are you trying to murder your own dear wife?”
Lin Sifei changed back into a human, straddling Luo Ke’s lap with her hands wrapped around her neck.
She grinned slyly. “I saw my endorsement vlog. I had no idea President Luo took so many videos of me.”
The tips of Luo Ke’s ears turned faintly red. She looked away, a little shy. “You saw it all, huh?”
Lin Sifei nodded, resting her cheek on Luo Ke’s shoulder. “You were just waiting for me to see it, weren’t you? My ads are even up in the elevators.”
“No, the Publicity Department was in charge of that,” Luo Ke said, her neck now flushing red as well.
Lin Sifei leaned in and pressed a kiss against her lips. “Luo Ke, you’re so scheming.”
Luo Ke froze, looking at her in surprise.
Lin Sifei swung her legs and giggled. “If you weren’t so scheming, how could I fall for you a little more each day?”
Luo Ke couldn’t hold back any longer. She leaned down and bit her luscious lips.
This mouth of hers was just too sweet.
Ultimately, Zhao Min was unable to deliver the documents. She sighed. Oh, well. People in love… I get it.
…
Luo Ke’s work efficiency plummeted, but this had its benefits. At the very least, she began to gradually delegate authority to her subordinates and no longer insisted on overseeing every single matter, which gave many people room to shine.
Of course, some of the more important matters were still reported to her.
For instance, the one hundred million2 that had been allocated to purchase the system vulnerability.
“President Luo, we’ve made contact. The other party provided the shallow-level vulnerabilities, and we’ve sent the deposit. We’re now preparing to continue the transaction.”
Luo Ke tapped her fingers on the desk. “Can you get him to meet in person?”
The person on the other end of the line was clearly experienced in dealing with such people. “President Luo, people in this line of work value their own security more than anything else. When we conduct transactions, the addresses he provides are all fake.”
Luo Ke had expected as much. “In that case, just follow the standard procedure,” she said. “And while you’re at it, ask if he’s interested in a long-term partnership.”
“Understood, I’ll ask. I think there’s a good chance. After all, Luo Corporation’s system is highly secure, so it would be a challenge for him.”
Luo Ke nodded. Knowing that was enough; she would leave the rest to them.
She put her phone away and turned to see Lin Sifei on her phone again, sending messages.
“Who are you chatting with now?”
“The screenwriter,” Lin Sifei said, puffing up her cheeks. “You know that sci-fi movie I took on? This screenwriter has a lot of say. The director even told me to communicate with him first.”
“It’s not going well?” Luo Ke could tell from her expression that Lin Sifei was worried.
As expected, she nodded. “This screenwriter’s demands are insane. He wants to calculate even the exact moment I break a sweat. And he thinks I’m too pale and wants me to get a tan. Excuse me, is it my fault I was born with fair skin that doesn’t tan?”
Luo Ke thought of Bai Xingrui’s constant search for whitening products and nodded. “If you said that out loud to anyone else, then yes, it would be your fault.”
Lin Sifei gave her a huge eye-roll3 and went back to her discussion with the screenwriter.
【Feifei who rushes out of the universe4: In this movie of yours, I feel like the male lead is more appealing to the audience. The female lead’s personal charisma isn’t very strong.】
【Screenwriter: That depends on how you act. A-485 is indeed excellent, but the female lead’s charm lies in her struggle as a human. The entire film still revolves around her.】
【Feifei who rushes out of the universe: …Even your naming is biased! You call the male lead by his name, A-48, but you just call the female lead ‘female lead’!】
【Screenwriter: I am biased. If you don’t want to act, I’ll find someone else.】
【Feifei who rushes out of the universe: Then go tell the director that. And remember to pay the breach of contract fee6.】
【Screenwriter: You think I care about your little breach of contract fee?!】
【Feifei who rushes out of the universe: I don’t care either, thank you very much. I just think you’re a two-faced person7. You talk as if the female lead’s performance is all up to the actor, but in reality, you decided when you wrote the script that the male lead was the soul of the movie. And you lied and won’t admit it!】
Lin Sifei’s face flushed with anger. She was usually a pretty salted fish8, but anything that could stir her up like this was almost always related to acting. This screenwriter was shameless, a master at throwing the pot9.
She thought for a moment, then grabbed her laptop to look up the screenwriter’s past works. Sure enough, this situation with a ‘soul male lead’ or ‘soul female lead’ happened often. As a result, actors playing the second male or second female lead, or even villains, often gained more fans and support.
It was a test of one’s ability to read a script, but this person was clearly trying to maintain his status by marketing himself as a genius screenwriter. This meant that if an actor played his male or female lead but was overshadowed by another character, they would be mocked for having terrible acting skills.
“This is obviously a script problem! These people are unbelievable. How did this guy get praised so highly in screenwriter circles?!”
Luo Ke looked at her, puzzled, and patted her back soothingly.
Lin Sifei showed her the chat history. “Isn’t he just trying to screw people over? This character struggles, sure, but she never actually grows or changes. She’s just pushed along the whole time. A character like that is a huge problem.”
“Then terminate the contract.” Luo Ke remembered how Lin Sifei had played the less-than-flattering sister role in《Light》, and how many people had cursed her out for it.
She didn’t want that to happen again. Xiao Xiao deserved nothing but praise.
“I’ll think about it. This is only my second movie. If I just terminate the contract, this guy will definitely have ways to deal with me.”
Luo Ke’s brow furrowed. She pinched Lin Sifei’s chin and turned her to face her. “You don’t need to worry about that. Leave it to me. I acquired Ju Luo Culture precisely so you wouldn’t have to suffer any grievances.”
Lin Sifei smiled and cupped Luo Ke’s face, planting a smacking baji10 kiss on her cheek. “Don’t worry. With a role like this, so what if he has a ‘soul male lead’? I can still deliver a unique performance. I just can’t shape the character according to this screenwriter’s demands. We’ll see what the director decides.”
There was no further news from the screenwriter. It seemed he had gone to the director to demand a replacement.
Lin Sifei snorted. She didn’t care. It wasn’t like she was short on roles.
Meanwhile, Yan Yafei walked into the Xiao Jutang Theater11 with practiced ease and sat in the second row.
Her hair was pinned up in a bun with a jade hairpin12, giving her a simple yet elegant look.
The curtain on the stage slowly rose, revealing puppets propped up by wooden rods. A gong sounded, and someone began to sing.
The puppets on stage engaged in a swift battle, a magical duel.
Yan Yafei didn’t cheer along with the crowd. Only at certain moments did she sit up a little straighter, lean forward, and clap in spite of herself.
After three plays, the audience began to either leave or stay. Yan Yafei silently walked over to a poster in the lobby and traced the names with her finger.
When she saw the name He Li13 written in the screenwriter column, the corners of her lips curled into a faint smile. She softly murmured his name, then walked over to a nearby counter and handed over a box.
“I bought these sunglasses. I heard Mr. He Li always watches the performances live and often has to face the bright lights, which is hard on his eyes.”
The staff member already recognized her and accepted the gift with a smile.
“You truly are Mr. He Li’s most loyal fan.”
“Not at all. The plays he writes are just so good,” Yan Yafei said with a demure smile, appearing perfectly gentle and gracious.
She scanned her surroundings, and her eyes flickered when she saw someone standing not far away. She continued forward.
“Are you the one who’s always sending gifts?”
“And you are?” Yan Yafei looked up, feigning confusion.
Seeing her speak so softly, He Li couldn’t help but lower his own voice. “I’m He Li.”
Yan Yafei’s eyes widened in astonishment. “You’re He Li!” She covered her lips with her hand, a look of joyful surprise bursting from her eyes. She reached out to shake his hand. “I can’t believe I’m seeing you in person. This is such a surprise.”
He Li smiled and scratched his hair, a little sheepish. “I hear you like my plays.”
Yan Yafei nodded emphatically. “Your skill is on another level.”
Everyone likes to be complimented, and he was especially happy to hear it today, with puppet shows being a declining art form.
Moreover, he glanced up at the gentle woman before him. It was just as the other screenwriters had said; this person was very pleasing to his eye.
He Li had plenty of fans, but he personally preferred gentle and poised women, perhaps due to his mother’s influence. But it was rare these days to find someone who was both gentle and had a strong, resilient backbone, so he had never found someone who truly caught his eye.
Perhaps this was fate. One day, while discussing a script, a colleague had mentioned a woman named Yan Yafei, an actress, apparently. She was always very low-key when she came, and because so few people watched puppet shows, no one had ever noticed her.
He Li hadn’t paid it much mind at first, but he couldn’t help but hear people talking about her, and his curiosity was piqued. He had actually come to the front of the house to see her for himself.
Fortunately, Yan Yafei did not disappoint. The two had a very pleasant conversation about puppet shows. Yan Yafei mentioned her favorite parts and even pointed out some areas that weren’t as strong.
“It can’t be helped. Sometimes a play isn’t popular, so you just have to wrap it up quickly.” He Li sounded a little sad as he said this.
Yan Yafei comforted him in a soft voice.
The two chatted for the entire afternoon. It wasn’t until evening that He Li, worried about her returning home alone at night, brought their meeting to a close.
“Can I… ask you out again next time?” Yan Yafei’s earlobes were slightly red, as if the invitation had taken all her strength.
He Li smiled and took out his phone. “Of course. Let’s add each other as friends.”
“Okay!” Yan Yafei happily added him as a friend before calling a taxi to leave.
The moment the car started moving, the smile vanished from Yan Yafei’s face. She tore the hairpin from her hair, ripped off the black wig, and fluffed her own orange-gold, permed curls.
“So exhausting. What century are we in? Who still likes this type?”
Yan Yafei took out her phone to log her progress, figuring she’d need a few more meetings to get a connection through He Li. As long as she could contact Gongbi14, that famous screenwriter, then she’d see what Lin Sifei would do.
She gave a cold laugh, determined to spend a little more time to win over He Li quickly.
Looking at the schedule on her phone, she glanced at Feng Tingyun’s15 name and crossed it out resentfully.
Looks like Feng Tingyun is gay. No wonder he wasn’t interested in me. So disgusting. Why hasn’t that trash self-destructed yet?
She rolled her eyes and lay back in the seat, sending He Li a smiley face emoji.
【Yan Yafei: He Li, hello.】
【He Li: Hello. Have you made it home yet?】
【Yan Yafei: Not yet, but I’m almost there.】
She rolled her eyes again as she typed, finally ending the conversation with the excuse of being busy with work.
…
Lin Sifei looked at Gongbi’s name in the screenwriter column and idly spun a pen.
That’s right, she was reading the script. The director had received a complaint from the screenwriter, Gongbi, but had rejected it, believing that Lin Sifei could portray the character very well.
Gongbi had been so angry he had immediately blocked Lin Sifei.
Lin Sifei discovered this when she asked about terminating the contract. She immediately sent a screenshot to the director.
The director had a massive headache, but he had already bought the script and felt Lin Sifei was a good fit. He was the type of director who liked to have strong creative control over his films, so collaborating with Gongbi wasn’t ideal. It wasn’t the first time the two had clashed over a script.
Gongbi always wanted to control everything. Unfortunately for him, so did Director Luo16.
【Director Luo: Don’t worry about it. Just contact me directly.】
Lin Sifei could tell the director also had his own criticisms of the script, so she didn’t bring it up again.
【Lin Sifei: Director Luo, when the male lead is cast, please make sure he knows the script will be changed. His screen time won’t change, but the female lead’s character will be more brilliant than she is in the script.】
【Director Luo: I’ll tell him. But don’t worry, we’re not taking away the male lead’s big moments. A movie is better with two brilliant characters.】
Lin Sifei felt relieved. She went to tell Lu Heng17 about her great battle with the screenwriter and also shared her ideas for revising the female lead’s character.
After she sent the message, a long time passed without a reply from Lu Heng.
Lin Sifei just assumed he was busy filming and went back to reading the script.
A little while later, her phone rang. It was Luo Ke.
“Hello, Luo Ke.” Lin Sifei answered the phone, a smile spreading across her face unconsciously. “I’ve only been home reading the script for one day, and you already can’t stand being at the office without me?”
“Just a little,” Luo Ke said with a dry cough. “But I’m not calling about that. Have you seen the entertainment news?”
Lin Sifei tilted her head in confusion and opened her laptop. “Not yet, I’m opening it now.”
“I heard some employees talking about it today. What’s going on with Feng Tingyun and Lu Heng? And how did you get dragged into it?”
Lin Sifei’s eyes widened in shock as she clicked on the video trending on the hot search18.
The footage was clearly from a film set. Lu Heng and Feng Tingyun were in the middle of a scene with a partner, playing brothers who had turned against each other, a scene of cutting the robe and severing righteousness19.
Everything seemed normal at first, but then Feng Tingyun, in the middle of his lines, got completely lost in the role. His eyes went red, and he suddenly grabbed Lu Heng by the collar, slamming him against the railing of a bridge.
“Why are you doing this to me! What did I do? I’ve been trying to contact you for these past four years, and what about you?! Every time I thought I’d finally taken a step forward, you just kicked me away.”
“Does it make you happy, watching me like a dog?!”
Those were obviously not his lines. A few gasps were heard from the film crew, and some people started to move forward to intervene. But Lu Heng’s face turned cold. He used the momentum, bent at the waist, and body-slammed the other man into the river.
Even as he fell, Feng Tingyun refused to let go, clinging tightly to him. Both of them plunged into the water.
Fortunately, the current wasn’t strong, and both men could swim. They surfaced almost immediately, still grabbing at each other’s collars.
“Do you even have a heart!”
Lu Heng was furious now. He punched him in the face. “Who’s the one without a heart! Feng Tingyun, you know what you said and what you did. Don’t come here acting pitiful! I know everything. You can drop the act!”
“I’m fucking acting? You said someone like me didn’t deserve to be famous, so I copied your persona to get famous! I fooled everyone! I thought it was worth it if it meant you could be famous!”
Lu Heng grabbed his hair and shoved his head underwater. “Wake up. I don’t care about being famous or not!”
“You’re lying! You said you wanted to be famous!” Feng Tingyun struggled desperately to get his head out of the water, only for Lu Heng to push him back under.
“At least, not anymore,” Lu Heng said, a sorrowful look on his face. “At least, I don’t want to get famous through the unspoken rule20.”
He yanked Feng Tingyun up, grabbed his face, and stared directly into his eyes.
Lu Heng’s eyes were bloodshot as he glared at him. “I truly thought of you as a friend. If you looked down on me then, what does any of this mean now?!”
He shoved Feng Tingyun violently and turned to swim for the shore.
Feng Tingyun followed behind, grabbed his ankle, and dragged him back under.
The two of them were at it again in the water, trading punches and kicks.
Urged on by the director’s roars, people from the side finally jumped into the water and began to pull them apart.
Feng Tingyun was strong and a good swimmer. Like a fish, he slipped out of his shirt and appeared shirtless in front of Lu Heng, grabbing him by the collar.
“I never looked down on you! I like you! I’ve liked you since four years ago! You were the one who said you were homophobic, you called me disgusting, like a maggot! You’re allowed to curse me out, but I’m not allowed to say one bad thing about you?!”
After shouting, Feng Tingyun’s lips started trembling with grievance. “You clearly said back then that you weren’t homophobic. You lied to me, tricked me into liking you, and then kicked me away.”
“On what grounds?” His eyes were red-rimmed, not from anger this time, but because he was on the verge of tears from the hurt.
“What are you talking about?!” Lu Heng stared at him, stunned.
Feng Tingyun moved closer, sneering. “Are you in love with Lin Sifei? Too bad, she’s also gay.”
Lu Heng had no desire to speak to the lunatic in front of him. “Say whatever nonsense you want.”
“Nonsense?!” Feng Tingyun suddenly laughed coldly. Before the crew could restrain him, he lunged forward, cupped the back of Lu Heng’s head with one hand, and slammed it forward.
Their lips and teeth crashed together. The camera shook, and a wave of gasps erupted from the crowd.
The video ended there. Lin Sifei was completely stunned like a cat.
Hold on, what are you guys doing? Why has this suddenly turned into a drama about being homophobic and a scum man?
The phone call was still connected. Hearing the video end without a sound from Lin Sifei, Luo Ke knew she was in shock.
“Xiao Xiao?”
Lin Sifei was still staring at the screen. “Is there some kind of misunderstanding between them?”
She was practically whispering. What were those two talking about? It was like the people and events they were describing were from a different reality than the one she knew.
“I think there must be a misunderstanding, too,” Luo Ke said.
Lin Sifei took a breath and patted her chest. “Yeah,” she said. “Those two are something else. Is this a real-life dog blood21 misunderstanding? A chasing wife to the crematorium22 scenario? Amazing, truly amazing. Why are they even bothering with a dual male lead23 movie? They should just shoot a documentary24.”
Hearing her lively voice, Luo Ke knew she had recovered and chuckled. “So, does Lu Heng have a secret crush on you or not? He’s always taking such good care of you.”
“No! Absolutely not!” Lin Sifei cleared her name. “Lu Heng is thoughtful to all the female actresses he works with. You can ask around and find out. He’s very nice to Chen Qiyuan25, too. It’s just that Little Chen is a bit shy and avoids him.”
Luo Ke hadn’t believed it anyway. Hearing her earnest explanation, she laughed. “Well, you’d better be careful. I’m a very jealous person.”
“It would be scarier if you weren’t jealous,” Lin Sifei said with a giggle. “Being jealous proves that you like me. Otherwise, it would mean you don’t care about me at all.”
“In that case, you seem to rarely get jealous.”
Lin Sifei huffed. “You’re so cold to everyone else. You never give me a chance to be jealous.”
Luo Ke thought about it and realized it was true. What should I do? I kind of want to see Xiao Xiao get jealous, but I don’t want to make her angry.
After a moment, her tone became serious again. “Xiao Xiao.”
“Hmm?” Lin Sifei was about to ask Lu Heng what was going on and answered distractedly.
“They missed out on four years because of a misunderstanding.”
Lin Sifei paused, her voice softening. “Yeah.”
“If possible, I hope you’ll tell me if you’re ever unhappy about anything. If we enter the halls of marriage, I can’t promise we’ll go decades without a single disagreement, but I’m willing to change for you, as long as you tell me.”
“I’m afraid I won’t be able to guess what you’re thinking, and I worry…”
“Okay,” Lin Sifei agreed with a smile. “You have to promise me, too. Tell me if you’re unhappy. And don’t just indulge me all the time. What if you really spoil me rotten? Two people together need to mutually adjust. You can’t be the only one getting ground down.”
Lin Sifei smiled. “Besides, I’m clearly such an understanding person. How is it that every time you talk, I feel like I have princess syndrome26 and I’m being completely unreasonable? I’m very dissatisfied with this. I’m telling you, you need to change.”
She issued a mock warning.
Luo Ke laughed, too. “Okay, I’ll change. I can’t keep doing that; it’s damaging our Xiao Xiao’s reputation. I should seek truth from facts27.”
“Exactly, exactly.”
Luo Ke laughed. “In that case, I have an idea, too.”
“Tell me.”
“When Xiao Xiao turns into a cat in the future, can you let me rub you more? Especially your paw pads.” Luo Ke thought for a moment. “And when you’re in human form, your cat ears and tail… could they…?”
“Stop!” Lin Sifei cut her off urgently. “That’s not the kind of adjustment I was talking about!”
“I feel that adjusting in this area would also be quite good. It would contribute to a harmonious marriage.”
Lin Sifei’s face flushed, and she muttered under her breath, “It’s not like I can control the cat ears and tail…”
“Then when you can control them, would that be okay?”
Smoke was coming from the top of Lin Sifei’s head28. “O-Okay, fine.”
