Not Smart to Begin With
Hitting It Will Make It Dumber
A man sat in front of a computer, his fingers tapping away at the keyboard. The glow of the screen cast a pale, bluish-white light on his face.
“Interesting, interesting. I refuse to believe I can’t find anything.”
He touched his lips, then picked up the teacup beside him and took a sip of water.
A progress bar on the computer desktop was climbing slowly.
Luo Ke opened her computer. An email marked “Urgent” had popped up in her inbox. She moved the mouse to hover over it.
Suddenly, Lin Sifei leaped down from the bookshelf, landing squarely on her back.
“Meow~”
Luo Ke felt a slight sting from the claws, but she didn’t mind at all. She reached back to pet her.
Lin Sifei placed her front paws directly on Luo Ke’s hand and climbed onto her arm, hugging it.
Luo Ke smiled, picked her up, and placed her next to the computer, stroking her back again and again.
“Meow~” Lin Sifei tilted her chin up comfortably, rolled over, and exposed her belly.
Just as Luo Ke was enjoying herself, the computer beside her chimed again. It was another urgent email.
Lin Sifei watched her frown, then craned her neck to see the urgent email and quietly crawled to the side.
It seems I’m disturbing Luo Ke’s work.
She had only crawled two steps when Luo Ke’s hand stroked her all the way from her head to the tip of her tail.
Lin Sifei shivered, her legs went soft, and she flopped onto the desk.
Luo Ke picked her up and placed her on her shoulder, looking at the email without opening it.
“Meow?” Aren’t you going to read it?
But Luo Ke reached for her phone instead. “The email doesn’t specify what’s so urgent. That’s a mistake those secretaries shouldn’t be making. Besides, I’ve requested that emails not be sent repeatedly. It’s impossible to have so many urgent emails in one day, and it’s not like I’m skipping work.”
So that means when you were skipping work before, there were a lot of urgent emails.
Lin Sifei gave her an indescribable look. You’re a really irresponsible boss.
Luo Ke flicked her forehead lightly. “The only times I skip work are to be with you.”
“Meow!” You’re the one who wanted to come.
Though she said that, Lin Sifei felt sweet inside.
【But work should be the priority from now on.】
Luo Ke saw the words she typed and smiled. “If I really put work first, I wonder who would be the first to cry.”
Lin Sifei turned her head away. It definitely wouldn’t be her.
As they chatted, the computer on the desk chimed again. This time it was a regular email.
However, Luo Ke was already on guard. She picked up her phone and called Special Assistant Lin, telling him to go to the Technology Department1 to see if they’d been breached by a hacker; even her own computer had been compromised.
Luo Corporation’s work emails were all sent through specially developed proprietary software. Every person had a corresponding account number, and the security and confidentiality were very high.
Special Assistant Lin was also stunned when he heard Luo Ke’s instructions. The programmers at Luo Corporation were all highly skilled and usually had to deal with corporate spies2. This was the first time they had actually been breached.
“I’ll go take a look right now.”
The Development Department3 was in the suburbs, on a plot of land that belonged exclusively to them.
Special Assistant Lin grabbed his car keys and drove over.
Luo Ke’s computer fell silent, likely because the intruder knew they had been discovered.
Lin Sifei remembered that she had found a hacker before. She changed back into a person, sat on Luo Ke’s lap, and fiddled with her phone.
Luo Ke sighed helplessly, grabbing the bathrobe she had set aside and wrapping it around her.
Lin Sifei followed her movements, raising her left hand when told and her right hand when told.
“Raise both hands.”
Lin Sifei held up her phone and raised her hands high.
Luo Ke wrapped an arm around her waist and tied the bathrobe’s sash in a knot.
Lin Sifei found the person she had contacted before and held up her phone for Luo Ke to see.
“I think we can ask this person. He seems to be very skilled in his circle. He should be able to narrow down the scope. Anyone who can breach Luo Corporation is definitely not a minor figure.”
【cats are cute】4: Hello, I’d like to ask, can you breach Luo Corporation’s system?
The reply was almost instantaneous. 【Yes】
Lin Sifei raised an eyebrow slightly. 【So confident. Have you done it before?】
【K】: Of course
【cats are cute】: But I remember Luo Corporation has never been breached
This time, the other side didn’t reply quickly. Lin Sifei tilted her head and stared for a good while before a message finally popped up.
【K】: How do you know it’s never been breached?
【cats are cute】: Because I know people at Luo Corporation, and from upper management5. It was only breached today. Was it you? Or do you have any suspects?
Lin Sifei thought for a moment and felt she should offer an incentive.
【cats are cute】: If you have a candidate, money is no object
K looked at the anonymous ID6 and recognized it as the person who had contacted him before. The payment had indeed been very generous.
He leaned back in his chair and clicked his tongue. He was a man of his word and wouldn’t pry into a client’s7 information. But this time, he happened to run into someone from Luo Corporation. If word got out, some people would surely refuse to believe he could breach Luo Corporation and would slander him by claiming he used his client as an entry point.
“What a pain!”
The slender young man grabbed his hair and ruffled it frantically.
After a moment, he pulled his chair forward, slid up to the computer, and began typing on the keyboard.
【K】: I did it. I didn’t know you were connected to Luo Corporation. I’ve already pulled out.
【cats are cute】: Wait, Luo Corporation wants to buy the vulnerability8 from you. Name your price.
K sat in his chair, estimating the price. This kind of situation was very common. For security reasons, companies were happy to buy vulnerabilities from others and then patch them. The price was usually determined by the difficulty of the intrusion.
The difficulty of Luo Corporation… K estimated it. 【One hundred million9, I guess.】
He didn’t really care if Luo Corporation bought it or not. It didn’t matter if they didn’t; right now, no one in the world could probably get in except for him.
He was just about to send this piece of advice when a series of messages came from the other side.
【cats are cute】: Deal.
【cats are cute】: Figure out a way we can trade safely
【cats are cute】: I also need to make sure you don’t scam me.
K could see it now. This client really was from Luo Corporation’s upper management, making such a decision so easily.
His first reaction wasn’t about the money. There was something else he was more curious about.
【K】: You should know about the Luo Corporation president’s fiancée, Lin Sifei, right? What’s her background? I can’t find a single thing. Did Luo Corporation help cover it up?
【cats are cute】: Nope, that’s a secret I can’t tell.
Lin Sifei’s eyes widened in pleasant surprise. “Look, look! He’s asking about me! Could he be one of my fans?”
She smiled and replied, but didn’t reveal her identity. She knew very well that she couldn’t get too close to fans, or it would cause a lot of trouble.
Still, having such a skilled fan was quite delightful.
【K】: I will definitely find out.
Lin Sifei stuck out her tongue helplessly. She used to be a cat. It would be a miracle if he could find anything.
Luo Ke squeezed her waist. “Have him solve the Luo Corporation vulnerability problem first.”
“Right, right.” Lin Sifei quickly got back on topic and handed the phone to Luo Ke.
Luo Ke sent K the contact information for someone in the Technology Department and told him to get in touch with them; they would be responsible for the specific transaction.
K was still vowing that he would definitely find out about Lin Sifei, but Luo Ke paid him no mind and went offline.
“This could be considered profiting from a disaster. Being able to get the system vulnerability is worth any amount of money.”
Lin Sifei nodded, then said seriously, “I just never thought someone would actually invade others’ privacy like this just to chase a star.”
She earnestly opened her Scarf10 and began to compose a post, advising her fans not to go overboard with their adoration and to be rational.
The fans all agreed, and Lin Sifei watched them, satisfied with how well-behaved they were.
K, who was in the middle of gathering information, nearly coughed up blood when he saw it. He really wasn’t a fan.
…
Since the system had been breached, Luo Ke drove to the company to handle things for safety’s sake.
Lin Sifei happily ran upstairs and pulled out the clothes she had bought earlier. “I want to wear this white one.”
She held up another black dress for Luo Ke. “You wear this, and we’ll have matching couple outfits.”
“When did you buy these?” Luo Ke stood up, amused, walked to her side, and changed into the dress.
Lin Sifei stood with her in front of the mirror, nodding in satisfaction. “Beautiful! A perfect match!”
“Let’s go.” Luo Ke took her hand. “Let’s go to the company and feed them some dog food11.”
Her little scheme seen through, Lin Sifei pouted. “We’re already engaged. It’s perfectly normal to show off our love.”
She got into the car and fastened her seatbelt.
Luo Ke helped her adjust the tightness and ruffled her hair. “Is it because you’re a cat that you have so much malice towards single dogs12?”
She was just joking, but Lin Sifei actually considered it seriously. “You know, I think you’re right.”
Luo Ke burst out laughing, her shoulders shaking as she held the steering wheel.
Lin Sifei reached out and patted her arm. “What are you laughing at? You’re the one who said it.”
“You were turned from a cat. They’ve always been human.”
“That doesn’t stop me from torturing single dogs,” Lin Sifei said, feeling bold because her reasoning was straight and her qi was strong13.
“What about the couple dogs14?”
Lin Sifei raised an eyebrow. “I’ll serve even more dog food. I want the couple dogs to eat our dog food too, so they’ll feel like the dog food they’re serving is too inferior!”
Luo Ke started the car, playing along with her. “Alright, alright, I’ll do my best to cooperate.”
Lin Sifei nodded in satisfaction and pumped her fist in the air. “Charge, duck!15”
The car entered the garage. Lin Sifei sat in her seat and blinked at Luo Ke. “Come on, open the door for me.”
“Why should I open it for you?”
Lin Sifei froze for a second, then quickly recovered. “Because you’re the one driving.”
“I worked so hard driving. Shouldn’t you be the one to open the door for me?”
Lin Sifei froze again, successfully persuaded. “You have a point. You stay put, I’ll get the door for you.”
It wasn’t like Luo Ke actually wanted her to open the door. She smiled and opened it herself.
Lin Sifei, in her high heels, went clack, clack, clack as she ran to Luo Ke’s side, slammed the door shut again, and glared at her through the glass.
Luo Ke could only raise her hands in surrender, letting her have her way.
Lin Sifei immediately broke into a smile, reached out, and pulled the door open. “Please—”
She bowed slightly, her arm outstretched.
Luo Ke got out of the car and squeezed her arm. “You look like one of those etiquette ladies16 from a hotel.”
Lin Sifei shot her a glare and slammed the car door shut with a bang. “Have you ever seen an etiquette lady as beautiful as me?”
“Of course not.” Luo Ke smiled and kissed her on the lips. “Alright, we should head up.”
Lin Sifei kissed her back on the lips. Now their lipstick was mixed together, though you couldn’t really tell without looking closely.
She intertwined her fingers with Luo Ke’s, held her head high, and strode proudly into the company.
The moment they entered, all eyes were drawn to them. Sparks flew from everyone’s eyes, as if they desperately wanted to see the crackling17 currents of love between the two.
Luo Ke held her hand and quietly introduced the company to her.
Although Lin Sifei had been to the company many times, she had mostly stayed on a few specific floors. There were places she had been to but didn’t know which department they were or what they did.
Luo Ke explained slowly. Lin Sifei leaned in closer to her. “Why are you telling me all this?”
“You might be coming to the company often in the future. If you need to, at least you’ll know a little.”
Lin Sifei nodded, listening carefully and committing it to memory.
When they reached the office floor, Lin Sifei greeted Zhao Min, then happily slipped into the office with Luo Ke.
Zhao Min watched the door close with a smile, then immediately lowered her head to send a message.
【Zhao Min】: They’re in the office!
【Oh my god, today’s the first time I’ve seen her in person. I missed her every other time.】
【President Luo actually managed to snag a celebrity】
【She’s so beautiful, President Luo has good taste】
【To think President Luo was dating without any of us knowing, and got engaged so quickly. Now we wait for the wedding.】
【Can we attend the wedding ceremony? After watching the engagement livestream, I really want to be there in person】
【Zhao Min】: Work hard. When the wedding happens, President Luo will probably set aside seats for me. They’ll be limited, so you’ll have to fight for them.
【Maybe we can send others away on business trips】
【Good idea, then the seat will be mine】
【Zhao Min】: If you get caught, President Luo won’t be merciful
Everyone immediately started spamming President Luo’s ‘gaze of a god18’ sticker pack19. It was a picture of Luo Ke’s stare, taken during a department manager meeting.
Although she was a great beauty, one look from her could really make your heart as still as water, and even make you tremble a little.
【I just didn’t expect this Miss Lin, who looks so gentle and weak, to be able to tame President Luo [gaze of a god.jpg]】
【Go catch up, I’ve been saying it for ages. President Luo is completely docile and obedient with her】
【I never expected President Luo to be like this】
【Didn’t you see they’re wearing matching couple outfits? President Luo is completely coordinating with someone else’s fashion choices. Who have you ever seen do that?】
Everyone chatted and laughed. Inside the office, however, it was calm.
Lin Sifei pointed at a file on the computer. “Luo Ke, what’s this situation?”
She was looking at the financial reports20 for Ju Luo Culture and Xinghe Culture.
Luo Ke glanced over and said flatly, “Someone has been embezzling money21. It looks like a considerable amount.”
Lin Sifei’s eyes widened. “Then shouldn’t we investigate? We have to catch them.”
“We have to investigate, but there’s no rush.” Luo Ke pointed to a few figures for her. “The data in this entire financial report is a bit off. If we make a move now, we won’t be able to catch the big fish22.”
Lin Sifei nodded. “Then how do we catch the big fish?”
“It’ll become clear during the next major collaboration project.”
Lin Sifei nodded, seeming to understand but not really23, and continued to look at the reports. After a while, she suddenly looked up.
“In that case, can’t I just find a good project and enter the crew24 to film?”
“We can’t do anything on the Xinghe Culture side. It might end up beating the grass to startle the snake25 because of Ju Luo Culture.”
Lin Sifei frowned and slumped onto the desk in frustration. “This is so hard, so hard.”
She kicked her legs, then leaned against Luo Ke’s shoulder to look at the document in her hands, but she couldn’t understand it at all.
She quietly sat back up and glanced at Luo Ke again. “You know so much.”
Luo Ke smiled. “I taught myself some of it. I can only really understand it on a surface level, not in-depth.”
Lin Sifei pouted. “You’re self-taught? You’re amazing. Every time, I just want to collapse at home. I don’t want to learn or do anything.”
“That’s because you love acting. When your hobby is the same as your profession, of course you’ll be more focused.”
Lin Sifei thought what she said made a lot of sense and happily went back to the documents.
“Huh?” Lin Sifei suddenly exclaimed.
Luo Ke massaged her neck and moved closer to her. “What’s the problem now?”
“It’s not that.” Lin Sifei pointed to a project from Ju Luo Culture. “My eyes aren’t deceiving me, are they? This project is actually Lu Heng and Feng Tingyun???”
Lin Sifei’s jaw dropped. “Lu Heng didn’t go on strike from acting26.”
She felt like she could smell the scent of melon27, so she immediately called Lu Heng.
Luo Ke raised an eyebrow from the side. “And here you were, talking about feeding dog food to the couple dogs. You’re clearly rushing to eat someone else’s dog food.”
“You don’t understand. This is called eating melon. Even if they get together, their dog food won’t be one ten-thousandth as good as ours,” Lin Sifei said with full confidence.
“What one ten-thousandth?” Lu Heng answered the phone just as she was finishing her sentence, but he hadn’t quite caught the first few words.
“Nothing, nothing.” Lin Sifei laughed. “I saw your next movie is with Feng Tingyun, and it’s a dual male lead28 movie. Have you and Feng Tingyun made up?”
She was afraid Feng Tingyun hadn’t made things clear yet, so she just said they’d made up as friends.
“No,” came Lu Heng’s weary voice from the other end of the line. “I didn’t know he was the other person at first. I only found out after signing the contract. I just joined Ju Luo Culture, so it wouldn’t be good to break the contract and make the company pay the breach of contract fee29.”
Lin Sifei understood his concerns. It wasn’t good to make demands right after switching companies. Besides, Feng Tingyun was a Film Emperor, after all. Starring in a dual male lead film with him was a resource others would fight fiercely for30.
If Lu Heng dared to say he didn’t want to act, his manager would definitely give him a long-winded speech31 about not bringing personal feelings into work.
“I know what you’re worried about, but if you really don’t want to, you don’t have to act. Ju Luo Culture is pretty flexible. Paying back the breach of contract fee over time isn’t a huge deal.”
The other end of the line went silent as Lu Heng thought. After a while, he shook his head with a smile. “Thanks, but that’s not necessary.”
Lin Sifei couldn’t quite understand. “Why? Don’t feel burdened. Breaking the contract and not acting isn’t a big deal.”
“I’m not worried about that,” Lu Heng said with a laugh. “But the movie is indeed about to start shooting, and it would be difficult to find another actor. I’ve already had my official announcement32 as the lead; breaking the contract wouldn’t look good. The director has also helped me in the past. But these are all just practical reasons.”
“Emotionally, I want to act in it too.” Lu Heng took a deep breath. “It’s time for us to have a proper ending.”
Lin Sifei was silent for a moment. “Do you really think so?”
“This will also be a chance for him to give up completely. We were never people who walked the same path.” Lu Heng paused. “And I need to do some serious thinking myself.”
His tone was calm. It was clear he had thought it through carefully before making his decision.
Since he had made up his mind, Lin Sifei couldn’t say much more. She just pouted and hummed in agreement, reminding him again that if he didn’t want to act, he should bring it up soon.
“If Feng Tingyun bullies you, don’t you dare hold back!”
Lu Heng couldn’t help but laugh. “He can’t bully me. I work out too. Don’t worry about me. You’re so small, if you think too much, watch out for your hairline.”
“My hairline is perfectly safe, thank you.” Lin Sifei bared her teeth. “Since filming is about to start, you must be busy now.”
“I’m packing my bags, getting ready to go to the film crew.”
“Ah, I see.” Lin Sifei covered her mouth. “Then I won’t disturb you.”
After hanging up, Lin Sifei was still a bit dazed. Thinking back on Lu Heng’s tone, she felt he had an air of having seen through the vanity of the world33.
Luo Ke turned her head and saw her dazed expression, and smiled. “Weren’t you going to eat melon? Why the long face?”
“No reason, it just feels weird.” Lin Sifei rubbed her earlobe.
Luo Ke didn’t know much about the entertainment circle, but she did agree that personal feelings shouldn’t be brought into work.
“Since he’s already decided, you don’t need to overthink it. You’re both adults, and this isn’t necessarily a bad thing.”
“That’s true. No matter what, Feng Tingyun’s Film Emperor title is the real deal. There are a lot of benefits to working with him.” Lin Sifei stretched and leaned against Luo Ke.
The afternoon lethargy was setting in. Lin Sifei’s eyes narrowed slightly, and her head began to nod as she started to doze off.
Her phone suddenly rang, startling her upright.
She picked up her phone and saw Lu Heng’s name, raising an eyebrow slightly. “Hello, Lu Heng-ge, why are you calling again? What’s up?”
“Sifei, my manager was just discussing publicity and distribution34 with the film crew and discovered something.” He took a deep breath. “Feng Tingyun’s studio35 has a batch of accounts that match the ones that attacked me during the Feng Xiao incident.”
Lin Sifei’s eyes widened in astonishment. Back then, Feng Xiao attacking Lu Heng was just a means to attack her. If that was the case, did that mean Feng Tingyun was also involved?
Lu Heng said, “I thought I should let you know. I’ll see if I can find out the specific details. But you should be careful too.”
“I will, thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
Lin Sifei hung up the phone. Luo Ke’s expression darkened. “I never thought this Feng Tingyun was hiding so much.”
“Who knows. We’ll just have to be careful.” Lin Sifei stood up and stretched her arms. “Being a person is so tiring. It’s more comfortable being a cat.”
Luo Ke glanced at her, raising an eyebrow.
Lin Sifei gave a sly smile. “I haven’t been able to fool around36 in the company for so long. I wonder if they’ve missed me.”
Hearing this, Luo Ke had to remind her, “We didn’t come with a cat.”
“I was carrying a big bag when I came in. I’ll just say the cat was inside.” After saying that, she pointed to her bag. She had clearly come prepared.
She transformed directly into a cat, and the dress instantly fell empty.
The white dress was of a somewhat complicated design. Lin Sifei squirmed around inside the fabric, finally finding an exit, only to get the dress stuck around her neck when she turned. How could this be! Did I get fat again?! Impossible!
“Meow meow meow!” She shook her head frantically, but it was no use. The dress only got tighter, and it even tripped her, causing her to nearly fall flat on her face.
Luo Ke couldn’t help but laugh. “Weren’t you going to go fool around? This look is pretty good.”
“Meow meow meow!” Lin Sifei furiously gestured for her phone. Trash Luo Ke, how dare you laugh at me.
Luo Ke handed her the cat keyboard and her phone, letting her type.
【If I go out wearing this dress, everyone will think it was taken off by your fiancée. And why did she take it off? What were you two doing that required taking it off? Tsk tsk, it would lead to endless reveries37—】
Luo Ke was completely unfazed by her threat, leisurely crossing her legs. “So what if my fiancée and I do something? Isn’t that perfectly normal?”
Lin Sifei stared with wide eyes. 【This is the company! A place of work!】
“If it weren’t for the system issue, I’d be at home with my fiancée right now, doing whatever I want.” As Luo Ke spoke, she raised an eyebrow. “Thinking about it that way, it’s their fault. I’ll dock their bonuses.”
Lin Sifei was stunned by Luo Ke’s shamelessness. She lunged at her leg with all her might, successfully snagging her stockings.
Swish, swish, swish. She scrambled up Luo Ke’s calf and into her lap, raising a paw to hit her.
Luo Ke burst out laughing. “Where are you hitting? Looking at it this way, it’s clear that you’re the one with the bigger problem.”
Lin Sifei’s paw froze. She was standing on Luo Ke’s thigh, raising her paw to strike upwards…
Her face flushed red, and she smacked herself on the forehead with her paw. Why did she feel like this wasn’t the first time she’d made this mistake? Why couldn’t she learn her lesson?
This brain of hers!
Luo Ke leisurely stabbed with a knife38. “You’re not smart to begin with. If you keep hitting yourself, you’ll really become an idiot.”
Lin Sifei glared at her and leaped off her body.
She landed steadily, lifting her chin, proud of her agility. Then, she froze. Wait, why was she so agile? Where was the dress?
She looked down. The dress was lying at Luo Ke’s feet. It seemed she had wriggled free when she was climbing up her leg.
Luo Ke started laughing again.
Lin Sifei glared at her. Still laughing, still laughing! You’re just enjoying my misfortune on purpose! This fiancée can be kicked to the curb!
