A Good Cabbage Was Snatched by a Pig1
Being a Salted Fish at Home2
With her company on break, Luo Ke suddenly had an abundance of time on her hands.
Lin Sifei’s movie had also been sent for review, and preparations for its promotion were underway.
“Hello?” Lin Sifei leaned back in her chair, eating fruit with Luo Ke as she answered the call.
“Miss Lin, this is your agent—Li Tao.”3
It was a man’s voice. Lin Sifei’s tone immediately warmed. “Oh, Tao-ge.”4
Luo Ke’s gaze sharpened, and she frowned at her. “Who is it?”
“My agent,” Lin Sifei whispered, pointing at her phone to signal for Luo Ke to stay quiet.
Li Tao continued, “I’m just calling to follow up. Regarding the promotion for the movie 《Light》, Lu Heng Company contacted us. They want to stir-fry a CP.”5
Luo Ke, who had crept up behind Lin Sifei, set the phone to speaker, broadcasting his words for both of them to hear.
A chill ran down Lin Sifei’s back. Just as she expected, Luo Ke was now squinting at her, her eyes full of scrutiny.
Lin Sifei forced an awkward laugh and immediately declared her loyalty in a loud voice. “This is an arthouse film. There’s no need to stir-fry any CPs. We should just aim for the awards.”
Li Tao acknowledged her decision in a professional tone and then hung up.
The moment Lin Sifei breathed a sigh of relief, Luo Ke tackled her onto the sofa. “What’s this about stir-frying a CP?”
Lin Sifei held up both hands, pushing against Luo Ke’s shoulders as she blinked innocently. “It’s just a little trick they use in the entertainment industry to generate buzz.”
Luo Ke’s expression was skeptical. “What kind of buzz could that possibly bring? Didn’t you say that being in a relationship would affect your career?”
“Because a stir-fried CP is fake. It’s just to grab everyone’s attention for a little while. The fans know not to believe it.” Lin Sifei gave her a light shove, sat up, and grabbed her tablet to show Luo Ke the gossip surrounding Feng Tingyun.
“Look. Whenever Feng Tingyun films a romance drama, rumors start flying. The hope is that people will project the emotions from the show onto the actors in real life.”
Luo Ke studied the articles seriously. “Didn’t you say there was nothing wrong with Feng Tingyun? How can he be fine after being in so many stir-fried CPs?”
Lin Sifei slapped her forehead in exasperation. “The rumors don’t necessarily mean he’s the one who wants to stir-fry the CP.”
Luo Ke looked confused. One minute it was one thing, the next it was another.
“Ugh!” Lin Sifei threw her hands up, giving up on explaining. She cupped the back of Luo Ke’s head, pulled her in, and planted a loud smack on her lips. “Just remember that I won’t cheat on you. That’s all that matters.”
Luo Ke gave her a suspicious look.
“What’s with that look! You don’t trust me?” Lin Sifei’s fur was instantly ruffled. “If we’re really talking about it, as the CEO of the Luo Clan, you’re the real fragrant steamed bun6 here, aren’t you? Feng Xiao was trying to hook up with you before, and besides her, you must have plenty of handsome men and beautiful women around you.”
She held out a palm. “Hand over your phone. I’m doing an inspection.”
Luo Ke held out her own hand. “Then I’m checking yours, too.”
Lin Sifei nodded emphatically. They unlocked their phones with their fingerprints and swapped.
It was Lin Sifei’s first time checking someone else’s phone, and she felt a tiny prick of guilt. She swiped through the home screen, glancing over at Luo Ke. Luo Ke, on the other hand, looked completely stress-free as she expertly tapped open Feixin.7
Puffing her cheeks, Lin Sifei looked away and opened Weixin.8
There wasn’t much in Luo Ke’s Feixin, mostly just work contacts. A quick scroll revealed a neat row of various managers, all with their company names as suffixes. Further down were records with the Luo family, which were mostly just transaction histories.
Lin Sifei stared at the long list of money transfers and felt like she’d lost out on a huge sum. The pain!
She clutched dramatically at her heart. Tapping on the profile page, she finally noticed that Luo Ke’s avatar was a picture of her sleeping, curled up like a cat.
Her cheeks flushed a faint red. She raised an eyebrow, a happy smile spreading across her face as she exited the app.
She peeked at Luo Ke, trying to see what Luo Ke was checking so she could follow her lead.
But Luo Ke was frozen, her screen stopped on the chat history with Lu Heng.
Lin Sifei was confused for three seconds before it hit her. She never deleted the record of her asking Lu Heng out for a meal!
She lunged for the phone.
Luo Ke dodged her pounce, pressing a hand on her waist to keep her down. She dangled the phone just out of reach. “You two chatted quite a bit. Food, cosmetics… were you planning to move on from poetry, songs, and odes9 to the philosophy of life?”
“N-No,” Lin Sifei said, looking at her with a guilty conscience, praying she hadn’t scrolled up any further.
Luo Ke leaned in close. “And you lied to me about going to the movies with him, saying you’d made the plans a long time ago.”
“I’m sorry! I was wrong!” Lin Sifei immediately begged for mercy, kicking her legs, trying to get away.
Luo Ke raised a hand and gave her a light slap on the butt. Lin Sifei’s face instantly turned crimson, and she buried her head in the crook of her arm.
Luo Ke’s palm tingled a little. Seeing her go silent, she started to panic. “Did I hit you too hard?”
She quickly reached out to rub the spot.
Lin Sifei grabbed her hand, her voice muffled. “Just let me up first.”
Luo Ke immediately stopped pinning her down and helped her sit up.
The second Lin Sifei’s feet touched the ground, she sprang up, clutching her butt with a face as red as a tomato. “You’re such a pervert!”
She snatched her phone back and fled upstairs, face burning.
Luo Ke was left holding her hand in the air, bewildered. “What did I do?”
She sat on the sofa, deep in thought, and finally decided to ask the internet for help.
【I spanked my girlfriend and she called me a pervert. Why?】
The browser immediately unleashed a torrent of unsavory results. Luo Ke fell silent, feeling as if the door to a new world10 had just been opened.
After a long while, Luo Ke decided she ought to defend herself. She went to the fridge, grabbed Lin Sifei’s favorite ice cream, and went upstairs. Pushing the door open, she called out, “Xiao Xiao, want some ice cream?”
Lin Sifei was lying face down on the bed. She shot her a look. “Are you trying to coax a cat? Hmph!”
Seeing her like this, Luo Ke couldn’t help but let out a soft chuckle. She walked in, closing the door behind her.
Lin Sifei gave her a disdainful glance. “I’m on a diet. I don’t eat ice cream.”
Despite her words, Luo Ke noticed her quietly scooting over, making room on the bed.
Luo Ke smiled and sat down. “A little bit is fine. We can share it and go for a run later.”
She popped the lid off the ice cream and held it out.
Lin Sifei looked at it and frowned. “Why’d you open it? I already said I’m not eating it.”
Then, in a classic case of the mouth dislikes but the body is honest,11 she sat up and took the spoon from Luo Ke’s hand.
Luo Ke couldn’t hold back another laugh.
Lin Sifei scraped off a tiny bit from the top, took a bite, then fed a spoonful to Luo Ke. “It’s cold. Eat it slowly, okay?”
Luo Ke opened her mouth and took the bite, the cold making her squint.
Lin Sifei immediately broke into a grin. “See? I told you it was cold. We’ll eat it bit by bit.”
Watching her carefully eat the ice cream, Luo Ke stood up. “I’ll go get the tablet. We can play some games.”
“Okay! Let’s play Defend the Cabbage!”12 Lin Sifei raised her spoon, smiling happily.
While Luo Ke went downstairs to get the tablet, Lin Sifei stared at the ice cream they were sharing, one spoon for each of them. She secretly dug out another scoop. One more bite won’t hurt.
A moment later, she couldn’t resist another bite.
…
When Luo Ke returned with the tablet, Lin Sifei waved her over eagerly. “Hurry! I had a bite while you were gone, so this next spoonful is yours.”
Luo Ke smiled, leaned down to eat it, then sat on the bed and opened the game for her.
Lin Sifei huddled close, and they whispered back and forth, planning where to place their weapons.
After playing for a while, Lin Sifei leaned against Luo Ke. “Luo Ke, are you bored just holing up at home with me?”
“Not at all,” Luo Ke said, clearing another level.
“If it weren’t for me needing to be available for promotions at any time, you could have gone traveling.”
Luo Ke smiled at her. “I’m not really the type who likes to travel anyway.”
“You don’t?” Lin Sifei glanced at her. She remembered the stacks of magazines Luo Ke had subscribed to. Luo Ke would always read the travel logs at the end, poring over every single word. Occasionally, when she was online, she’d browse through landscape photos taken by photographers. She clearly loved it.
Luo Ke just smiled back at her. “Nope. I don’t.”
Lin Sifei pressed her lips together but didn’t say anything more. She turned her attention back to the screen and continued playing.
As they were playing, a push notification popped up at the top of the screen.
【Film Emperor Feng Tingyun’s Mystery Girlfriend: The Rising Little Flower13 Yan Yafei and Their Matching Couple Masks】
Lin Sifei’s hands moved faster than her eyes. The moment she saw the names Feng Tingyun and Yan Yafei, she tapped it.
The article was a mix of text and high-definition photos, describing how Feng Tingyun and Yan Yafei were spotted wearing matching couple masks. It was stone hammer14 proof.
Lin Sifei: emmmm
That trashy Film Emperor! Didn’t he say he didn’t like Yan Yafei?
She immediately grabbed her phone and sent a message to Lu Heng. 【Lu Heng-ge, did you see the headlines? Didn’t Senior Feng say that Yan Yafei wasn’t a good person? How did they end up in a scandal?】
Luo Ke rested her chin on Lin Sifei’s shoulder, her voice dripping with acid. “Lu Heng-ge, Tao-ge… why do you call every man you see ‘ge’?”
“Can’t help it. I’m young,” Lin Sifei said, cupping her cheeks proudly.
Luo Ke wrapped an arm around her. “What kind of relationship do you have that you’re calling him ‘ge’? How come I’ve never heard you call me ‘jie’?”15
Lin Sifei’s face turned a faint red as she looked at her. “You want me to?”
Luo Ke had been trying to lecture her, but seeing those shy, bashful eyes made her heart start to pound. “Then let me hear you say it.”
“How should I say it? ‘Luo-jie’ sounds too distant, and ‘Ke-jie’ just sounds awful.”
As Lin Sifei mumbled, Luo Ke also fell into deep thought. She felt a pang of regret that her name didn’t sound soft or pleasant enough when called out.
Lin Sifei peeked at Luo Ke again. Seeing her genuinely pondering it, she couldn’t help but smile. She suddenly threw her arms around her neck. “Jiejie~”16
She pressed her lips against Luo Ke’s, her warm breath slipping past Luo Ke’s slightly parted lips. A jolt went through Luo Ke’s heart, and she lowered her gaze to look at her.
Lin Sifei’s eyelashes fluttered up. She melted against her, her arms still hooked around her neck as she tilted her head back to meet her gaze.
Luo Ke tilted her own head slightly, moving past her pert nose to press her lips against hers, so red and vibrant.
On the bed, the tablet blared with the sounds of monsters attacking. The cabbage was being devoured, om nom nom, letting out a weak, pitiful groan.
Lin Sifei let out a low whimper, her heart aching for the snatched cabbage.
