Long Live Cats!
Sniff, sniff, sniff… ahh~
The designer arrived shortly. She was a girl with glasses and a low ponytail, dressed in a short-sleeved top and capri pants. She looked so completely ordinary, so lost in the crowd1, that she didn’t seem to belong in the design industry at all.
Lin Sifei fell silent as she studied the young woman. Is she really not an assistant?
It wasn’t her fault for stereotyping. Every artist and designer she knew was independent and unconventional, guaranteed to be the flashiest cub2 in any pack.
Luo Ke was also surprised for a moment, but she stepped forward. She took the jewelry box from the designer and passed it to the person beside her. “Let’s shoot first.”
Lin Sifei craned her neck to get a look at the jewelry. It was remarkably simple: a plain, circular ring with a small gap where a missing piece was nestled. Judging by the size, the fragment would fit perfectly into the opening. A delicate chain connected the fragment to the main circle, ensuring the two parts would never be separated. A small piece of white jade was set into the fragment, giving off a gentle aura.
Lin Sifei posed with the necklace resting on her forehead like a circlet, her eyes gazing plaintively at the camera.
She had studied this expression extensively—it was the standard pleading look a cat gives when it’s been naughty. Like when it kicks poop out of the litter box, shreds toilet paper all over the room, or knocks over the trash can… Anyway, once a cat makes that face, the kitty did nothing wrong3!
The photographer raised an eyebrow and captured the pose. After that came a series of purely cute photos, including one of a cat doing a New Year’s greeting4 and another of a cat tucking in its little paws5. The designer specifically selected three shots that highlighted the jade stone.
Once the shoot was over, the photos were immediately sent for post-processing.
Luo Ke stood before the young designer. “You’re new here? A recently signed designer?”
“Yes.”
“A ten-year copyright period is a bit short. We’d prefer a longer licensing term.”
The girl glanced up at Luo Ke, then looked down and shook her head. “I think ten years is plenty. This piece was only meant to help the company through this emergency. It wasn’t designed with the company’s long-term plans in mind.”
Luo Ke’s brow furrowed slightly. “Is there a story behind this piece? If you’re willing to share it, I could launch it as a special edition item.”
“That’s not appropriate.” The girl frowned, shaking her head again. “The company positions itself as a luxury, high-end brand. But this piece is just meant to express a simple apology. The materials are all common jade, and the price point is very low. It doesn’t fit the company’s image.”
“Our company has sold this design before, and other low-end brands would be happy to acquire it. But I think the concept is excellent. We can launch it as an affordable line. As for whether the brand is high-end or not… as long as we market this piece well, it can be both affordable and high-end.”
Luo Ke raised an eyebrow and extended a hand. “Are you willing to bring this jewelry, and the story behind it, to the public?”
The girl looked at her outstretched right hand, hesitated for a second, then took it.
A smile spread across Luo Ke’s face. She glanced at the manager beside them, who immediately sent a message to get the copywriters and photo editors ready.
“President Luo, the apology has been posted to Weibo6.”
Luo Ke nodded and bent down. Lin Sifei immediately ran over and leaped into her arms.
Cradling the cat, Luo Ke turned toward the conference room. “Get the product and PR departments in here for a meeting.” She looked at the designer. “You should come, too.”
She walked into the meeting, cat in arms, and sat down at the head of the table. She pulled out her tablet to check the direction of public opinion as people from various departments trickled in.
“Release the news to all major public platforms. Direct them to our apology statement.” Luo Ke scrolled through her tablet. “Hold off on the new product announcement for now. Let the public sentiment ferment for a while before we post.”
“Product department, adjust the promotion for all new products. Make this apology necklace the lead feature.” Luo Ke looked at the people before her. “This is the first time we’ve launched an affordable jewelry line. I expect everyone to be on their toes and think through your strategies.”
Someone from the product department looked at the unfamiliar face in the room. “You must be the designer. Could you please share your design concept with me? We can discuss it further later to finalize the promotional approach.”
Another person from the department spoke up, frowning. “This apology necklace has no connection to any of our other new products. Our theme this time is ‘magnificence,’ combining classical beauty with intricate, exquisite designs.”
“Just as the designer said, this piece is simple. It represents the most common feeling of remorse. That feeling exists whether one is plain or magnificent. People will always feel regret. Latch onto that emotion and make the connection as best you can.”
The product team members fell into deep thought, their fingers flying across their keyboards as they presumably contacted their teams.
When it came to products and marketing, there wasn’t much Luo Ke could do directly. Everyone has their own specialty7, and it was best to leave it to the experts. Besides, the product department’s campaigns were always good enough to be used as textbook examples.
Lin Sifei watched Luo Ke frown as she reviewed the company’s online reputation and overall data. She reached out a paw and gently touched Luo Ke’s arm. “Miao~”
There was nothing more de-stressing than a soft, cute cat. Luo Ke smiled, holding her tablet with one hand while stroking Lin Sifei’s fur with the other.
Under her gentle petting, Lin Sifei’s feline nature took over, and her eyelids were fighting a losing battle8.
She tried her best to stay awake but ultimately failed. She’d had a lot of exercise today, plus the photoshoot. It was normal to be tired and fall asleep, totally normal…
Curled up on Luo Ke’s lap, Lin Sifei rested her head on her paws and drifted off into a comfortable sleep, letting out soft little purrs.
Luo Ke couldn’t help but let out a soft laugh. Puchi.9 She shook her head with a helpless smile.
Looking back at her tablet, she saw that, as expected, the former spokesperson’s fans had swarmed their page. Other netizens were now arguing with them.
As more and more people joined the fray, mocking the abandoned spokesperson, Luo Ke immediately gave the order to release the new cat model and product lineup, with a special emphasis on the meaning behind the necklace.
The moment the beautiful cat appeared online, she instantly captured the hearts of countless girls. They were all screaming and howling10 about how she was the cutest cat, the best spokes-cat, and that they would buy out the shelves for the kitty! What? Someone’s badmouthing the company and its products? What does that have to do with our kitty! The jewelry doesn’t have to be pretty, but the cat has to be cute!
Luo Ke calmly watched the support metrics climb. At the same time, the product department reported that sales were indeed excellent.
“However, even though sales are good, an affordable product won’t generate much profit.” A member of the product team frowned. The losses were still significant.
Luo Ke nodded. She was well aware of that. And there was another drawback to launching an affordable line—
She refreshed the real-time keyword search. Sure enough, the former spokesperson’s fans had started mocking them, saying the high-end brand was losing its status by selling cheap products.
Luo Ke immediately had the PR department buy a trending topic. The product department’s second promotional wave had to be on point: one push for new product benefits, and another explaining the product’s story.
The second wave of promotion was posted on a dedicated jewelry blog, with the official account only giving it a like.
“PR, continue guiding the conversation on public platforms. Funnel them to the promotional blog to see the cat and the jewelry,” Luo Ke commanded calmly. “Is the vlog edit finished? Post it. Arrange for the trending topic to go live right after. We have to redirect all this heat onto the new product.”
Soon, only two opinions remained about Luo’s jewelry: the cat is adorable, and the new products are beautiful.
In an incredibly short time, the product department had filmed a new vlog. Models were easier to find than spokespeople. The video featured the designer’s simple, honest voice, behind-the-scenes footage from the cat’s photoshoot, and a clip of Luo Ke herself shaking hands with the designer to sign the licensing contract.
“Every relationship is like this circle,” the voiceover said. “It’s missing a piece because an apology was left unsaid. When the words are hard to speak, let’s find another way—to say I’m sorry.”
At the end of the video, the company logo appeared on screen. The gorgeous, high-end jewelry was displayed alongside the simple necklace—on one side, superficial pride; on the other, heartfelt sincerity.
With the vlog’s release, the product department’s mission was complete. A few of them took their hands off their keyboards, let out a long breath, and leaned back in their chairs.
In contrast, the PR team sitting across from them had their brows furrowed in concentration, typing at full throttle.
All the marketing accounts they’d previously contacted to promote the new products were given new copy. The message now connected inner feelings with outer appearances, championing the traditional Chinese virtue that the gift is light, but the sentiment is heavy11.
As long as my apology is sincere, this necklace is the most precious thing in the world.
What? You say it’s cheap?! Tui!12 That’s because you only see the jewelry and not the sincerity. You’re not noble enough!
After a flurry of activity from the PR department, the new product launch crisis was at least resolved, and the affordable necklace had won over a lot of people.
“It’s a shame we can’t find any influential pet bloggers on such short notice. The ones you can just buy are too obvious; it would probably backfire.”
A PR team member sighed heavily. In his view, the spokes-cat was the real big killing weapon13 that could save the company’s image. High-end, affordable—who cared? When you’ve got a cat to huff14, what more could you possibly want15?
Hearing this, Luo Ke looked down at Lin Sifei, who was sleeping soundly on her lap.
The frantic keyboard clatter in the conference room died down. The sudden silence made Lin Sifei’s ears twitch. She let out a couple more purrs, hulu hulu, then rolled onto her back, exposing her round, fluffy belly.
Zhao Min lifted her phone and snapped a picture. The phone was still connected to the projector, and the photo flashed onto the big screen.
So cute.
The employees, exhausted after a long day, were slumped in their chairs like salted fish16. They stared at the picture, huffing the cat to restore their lifeblood17.
“Huh?” one of the PR guys frowned. “The data’s shifting a bit.”
His words sent a jolt through the room. Everyone snapped to attention, their eyes glued to the screens in front of them.
“There’s no problem here. The favorability rating is rising, and the backlash from the fans has weakened.”
“No, it’s the mentions of the cat. That data is skyrocketing. It’s about to overtake the new product promotion.”
Everyone looked at the data and saw it was true. At first, everyone was huffing the cat, but the new product launch had stolen the spotlight. Now, suddenly, the cat was trending again.
“Found it. This is the source.” The PR guy connected his computer to the screen, displaying a Weibo post. A popular pet blogger had bought one of everything from the new collection, posting her order confirmation and saying she was going to divide it among her cats and dogs.
Then she bought dozens of the apology necklaces, listing all the people she needed to apologize to. Finally, she posted a photo of herself with Xiao Xiao, along with a screenshot of the magazine cover from the previous promotion.
【Some people said Luo’s pissed someone off and can’t get a spokesperson. Here’s a nice face-slapping18 for you with a screenshot. This cat has already been a jewelry model on a magazine cover, you bunch of sour essences19.】
The PR team stared at the photo, which was clearly taken inside their company, completely baffled. “Who is that?”
“President Chen’s daughter. She was here for our last collaboration.” Luo Ke narrowed her eyes. She never would have guessed the girl was a major blogger.
She scrolled through the comments below, all from people who were going to buy jewelry for the cat’s sake.
【Charge, sisters!20 Let’s show them that our kitty spokesperson is just as good as any celebrity!】
【It’s so cheap, I’m gonna buy one for my bestie.】
【Isn’t this, like, made for couples?! Going to hint at my boyfriend right now.】
【Am I the only one who noticed the blogger’s apology list is thiiiiis long?】
【The cat is so beautiful! We want more!】
Soon, a link to Lin Sifei’s own cat Weibo account was posted. A swarm of people flocked to it to huff the cat, loudly condemning the lack of photos.
The PR department followed the link. Not knowing the cat could turn into a person, their first thought was that President Luo was quite the smoldering21 type, secretly poking22 around online to post cute pictures of her cat.
“President Luo, maybe you could take a few more pictures for everyone? To keep the momentum going.”
Luo Ke thought for a moment, then found a handkerchief and gently covered Lin Sifei’s belly. The important parts couldn’t be exposed. She then took three pictures, didn’t even bother with a filter, and uploaded them directly.
The moment the post went live, it was met with a wave of excited screams.
【That face! awsl!23】
【Ugh, that eyeliner is so perfect, let me kiss it!】
【Such long legs, and pink toe beans! Please post more!】
【Am I the only one who noticed the little big sister’s24 legs? They’re so straight and slender too.】
Luo Ke watched with satisfaction as the cat photos went viral, climbing the trending topics list right alongside the new product. She reached down and gave Lin Sifei’s belly a contented scratch.
Sleeping soundly, Lin Sifei instinctively reacted to the tickle on her tummy. She stretched out her four paws and wrapped them around the hand disturbing her slumber.
Luo Ke leaned closer to her face, smiling as she watched her sleep so soundly that her little fangs were showing. “Sleeping so peacefully, huh?”
Her breath washed over Lin Sifei’s face. The cat’s ears twitched, her eyes squinted, and she climbed up Luo Ke’s stomach, burying her face in the fabric of her shirt to continue sleeping.
Luo Ke chuckled, then looked up at the people in the conference room. “Keep an eye on public opinion. That’s all for now. Meeting dismissed.”
Everyone carefully and quietly rose from their seats, trying not to make a sound that would disturb President Luo’s precious cat.
Luo Ke turned to Zhao Min. “Go get the files and bring them here. I’ll work from here for a bit.”
Zhao Min nodded, then her face scrunched up in hesitation. “You’re not going back to your office, President Luo? Isn’t Miss Lin still sleeping in the lounge? Will she be okay if she wakes up and you’re not there?”
Especially if you’re ditching your girlfriend for a cat’s nap.
Luo Ke’s gentle expression instantly turned cold. “Just be quiet when you get the files. Don’t wake her. I’ll go over as soon as Xiao Xiao wakes up.”
Zhao Min sighed internally at the power of a cat’s charm and quickly left to retrieve the documents.
Lying in Luo Ke’s arms, Lin Sifei finally woke up.
She stretched out with a huge yawn, but as she twisted her body, she rolled right into empty space.
“Miao?—MIAO!”
Lin Sifei’s claws shot out, hooking into Luo Ke’s clothes just as Luo Ke’s hand swooped in to catch her by the waist.
“Whew—” Both human and cat let out a sigh of relief.
Luo Ke picked Lin Sifei up, placed her on the desk, and smoothed down her fluffed-up fur.
Lin Sifei sat on the desk, shaking off her grogginess. Then it hit her. Is the company crisis over?
She immediately looked up, pressing her paws on Luo Ke’s hand. “Miao miao miao!”
“Don’t worry, it’s all taken care of.” Luo Ke smiled and gently pinched her ear. “You actually slept through the whole thing. Your heart is too big25.”
Hearing that everything was fine, Lin Sifei let out another big yawn. What was the big deal? It was a sign of trust, right? It just meant she believed Luo Ke could handle any crisis.
She met Luo Ke’s eyes. Okay, fine, she was just really sleepy. She guiltily looked away. I think I need an apology necklace, too.
“It’s getting late. Now that you’re awake, let’s go home.” Luo Ke saw her darting little eyes and smiled as she picked her up.
Lin Sifei climbed up her arm and settled onto her shoulder. Because one of Luo Ke’s arms was in a cast, Zhao Min followed behind them, carrying the files.
When they got to the office, Zhao Min glanced around but didn’t see Lin Sifei. She couldn’t help but marvel, Miss Lin sure can sleep.
Or maybe… she was just tired out from last night?
A strange smile crept onto her face. Luo Ke turned around and saw her expression, which gave her a bit of a shock.
“You can go now.” Luo Ke, holding Lin Sifei, poured a small bowl of water for her before sipping the tea on her desk.
After lapping up the water, Lin Sifei started batting a ball of yarn around the office.
Having just resolved a major crisis, Luo Ke was happy to indulge her. She tossed the yarn ball for her and even waved a teaser wand around, making Lin Sifei jump for it.
Finally, after failing to catch the wand, Lin Sifei huffily trotted off to play with the yarn ball on her own.
Luo Ke couldn’t help but laugh. She sat on the floor and snapped a few pictures, then found Chen Mingsi on Feixin26 and sent her a message. 【Thanks for speaking up for Xiao Xiao on Weibo today.】
Chen Mingsi’s reply was almost instantaneous. 【No one is allowed to speak ill of cats!】
She even attached a picture of a cat with both arms raised high, full of fighting spirit.
Luo Ke smiled and held the phone out for Lin Sifei. “I took three pictures of you while you were sleeping and posted them. Take a look.”
Lin Sifei stared at the screen, her pupils quaking27. No filter! What is wrong with this woman! Why is there no filter!
“Miao!” Lin Sifei protested, smacking the phone with her paw.
Luo Ke raised an eyebrow and took her phone back. “They look good, don’t they? Everyone said they were beautiful.”
Lin Sifei felt like she was about to faint. She quickly snatched the phone back and took three face-on selfies28 of herself, complete with a soft pink filter that made her nose and paw pads look even pinker.
Comments immediately flooded in.
【What amazing day is it today, two posts! Six photos!】
【Pink meat pads! A reaction meme of Sa Beining29 huffing oxygen.】
【The photo styles are totally different, but! BEAUTIFUL! gkdgkd30】
Seeing the crowd captivated by her beauty, Lin Sifei smugly admired her own photos. Huffing my own pics. I’m obsessed31!
Luo Ke, once again under fire for her lack of filter skills, finally picked up her phone and tried to learn.
She ended up with a bunch of black-and-white photos, and others with Lolita-style decorations added on top.
“This… looks very good,” Luo Ke said, narrowing her eyes.
Lin Sifei glanced over and scoffed. The essence of a cat’s appeal is its cuteness! Coolness is fleeting, but a cute cat is forever!
Lin Sifei’s long legs carried her swiftly into the lounge. She changed back into a human, got dressed, and came out.
“Luo Ke!”
Luo Ke looked up at her.
Lin Sifei knelt gracefully on the floor. “Let’s get another cat!”
The author has something to say:
Edited. Cats are the best!
The first 2362.5 words are the new update, the last 2362.5 words are a bonus for reaching five thousand collections32. Don’t ask me why the bonus is so late, and don’t ask me why the word count has a decimal point. If you ask, the answer is: because the cat is cute, the cat did nothing wrong.
