Bringing Lunch
Blushing
In the early morning, Lin Sifei yawned as she sat in Luo Ke’s car, on her way to the film set.
“Should I arrange for an assistant for you? A nanny van1 to take you to and from the set.”
Lin Sifei’s eyes were half-closed, looking like she hadn’t woken up yet. “I probably need one, but can you find an assistant who’s tight-lipped? If I accidentally turn into a cat, they have to be able to keep it a secret.”
“No problem. I’ll arrange it.”
When they arrived, Luo Ke got out of the car with Lin Sifei and reached out to straighten her collar. “If you run into any problems on set, remember to call me.”
“There definitely won’t be any problems.” Lin Sifei waved her hands dismissively. “You can’t say things like that, it’s not auspicious. Of course nothing can go wrong during filming.”
Luo Ke paused for a second, then caught on. “Right. May ten thousand matters be as you wish, great luck and great profit.”2
Lin Sifei smiled and nodded. Seeing the crowd begin to gather near the film and television center not far away, she put on her sunglasses, waved at Luo Ke, and hurried inside with her bag.
Luo Ke couldn’t help but smile as she watched her trot away in her high heels, taking tiny, quick steps.
Lin Sifei sneezed and rubbed her nose. “Who’s talking about me?”
She muttered to herself but didn’t have time to dwell on it as she rushed onto the set.
Most of the cast and crew had already arrived. The moment Lin Sifei walked in, Director Chen pointed at her and shouted, “Hurry up and get to makeup! What are you standing around for!”
Lin Sifei was whisked away by the makeup artist. Since it was a modern film, the makeup wasn’t too heavy, which saved a lot of time.
The filming schedule was non-sequential, and the very first scene was a sweet, everyday moment between the female and male leads.
“This part should be relatively easy to act. I’m also hoping it helps you two get familiar with each other quickly,” Director Chen explained before calling for the first take.
Just as Lin Sifei had expected, the male lead was a truly talented actor. The two of them got into character quickly. Though it was only their second time meeting, the way their eyes met made it seem as if they were looking at their most beloved.
With a strong male lead, the shoot went smoothly for Lin Sifei. She quickly finished her part and went to the side to rest.
Although it was already autumn, the sun was still a bit intense. Lin Sifei couldn’t stand it after a few minutes. She didn’t have an assistant, so naturally, no one was there to bring her a towel, ice water, or a fan.
She looked around and spotted Director Chen’s large umbrella and the fan next to him. She grabbed a small bandeng3, ran over, and with the thickest of faces and no shame, squeezed into a spot.
“Hey, what are you doing here?” Director Chen asked, pointing at her with the folding fan in his hand.
Lin Sifei grinned. “Aren’t I here to see how things look from behind the camera? It’s also convenient for my future improvement, no?”
Director Chen shot her a look, exposing her without mercy. “You’re just here to mooch off the fan.”
“Now, I didn’t say that. That’s your speculation.” Lin Sifei deliberately emphasized the word, dragging her stool a little closer to the fan with a serious expression.
Director Chen was so annoyed he wanted to smack her on the head. He had just raised his fan when Lin Sifei pulled out her phone. “Oh my, I wonder what President Luo is doing right now.”
Director Chen instantly retracted his hand and took a deep breath. Calm down, calm down. One hundred million, one hundred million.
He turned his head away, deciding that what the eyes don’t see is clean4, and stared at the center of the set.
Lin Sifei smiled as she watched the performance. A bottle of water was handed to her.
She looked up and saw the male lead smiling at her.
“Thanks.” Lin Sifei didn’t stand on ceremony and twisted the cap off. She then grabbed a nearby maza5 for him to sit on.
The male lead sat on the maza, his eyes fixed on Lin Sifei.
Lin Sifei smiled. “What is it? Did you realize I’m too beautiful and fall in love with me?”
The male lead had been in the industry for several years. He raised an eyebrow in surprise at her words, then chuckled. “People like you are rare in this business. Are you a newcomer?”
“I am.” Lin Sifei flicked her hair back. “I got the role through my investor.”
“Hmph. She didn’t just ‘get’ the role. She found an investor for the entire movie so she could star in it herself,” Director Chen grumbled, sitting down.
Lin Sifei turned her head; the set was on a break.
The male lead looked at Lin Sifei with some surprise. “Your backing is that strong, huh?”
“Low-key, low-key.” Lin Sifei gestured with her hands. “I’m still just a newcomer.”
“Actually, what I’m curious about is that you don’t act like a newcomer at all. Setting aside your acting skills, your blocking, your sensitivity to camera positions, your sense of the screen’s composition… those aren’t things a newcomer would have.”
“Senior Lu Heng seems to know quite a lot.” Lin Sifei glanced at Director Chen. “What do you think, Director?”
“My thoughts are the same as Lu Heng’s. I just really couldn’t find any record of you appearing in any other productions.”
Lin Sifei chuckled. “Well, you can think of it this way. One, I’m exceptionally talented and learned by watching movies and TV shows. Two, I don’t have any official credits because I’ve always just hired people to act with me for my own shoots, which I don’t release.”
A look of dawning realization crossed Director Chen’s face. He narrowed his eyes. “You’re quite rich, then, hiring people to come to your house and film for your own amusement.”
“It’s not that expensive. Since I’m not releasing them, I can save on costumes, makeup, props, and the like. It’s really not so bad.”
Lu Heng took a sip of water and patted his chest. “That’s good. I was thinking that newcomers nowadays had reached this terrifying level. Then this old wave would really be slapped dead on the beach.”6
Lin Sifei noticed he showed no signs of formality with Director Chen and raised an eyebrow. “Are you and Director Chen close, Senior Lu Heng?”
“We’ve worked together before and have kept in touch. This kid is down-to-earth, so I brought him on for this project.”
Lin Sifei smiled. “Well then, it seems we are both connection households7, Senior Lu Heng.”
“Just call me Lu Heng-ge8. ‘Senior’ and the like sound a bit strange.”
“Alright then, Lu Heng-ge.” Lin Sifei patted his shoulder. “I hope we have a great time working together.”
Soon, it was time for another one of Lin Sifei’s scenes. She waved goodbye and ran off to touch up her makeup.
Director Chen sighed with emotion. “Her acting is very good. She has talent. If she keeps it up, becoming a big star will be easy.”
Lu Heng scratched his hair. “So, Director, you’re hoping she can give me a boost?”
“That’s for sure. This President Luo is seriously rich. Other than locking in the female lead, she let me handle all the casting, and the female lead she chose is such a perfect fit. This movie is going to be a blockbuster.”
“Wu Ma, are you sure this soup won’t leak?” Luo Ke asked, holding an insulated food container and looking it over worriedly.
“Don’t you worry, these are all sealed tight. You can just take them as they are.” Wu Ma wiped her hands before placing the lid on another container. “This one has the spare ribs Miss Lin likes.”
“Okay.” Luo Ke looked at the table full of insulated containers, picked up two, and headed for the door.
Zhao Min was standing by the nanny van, fanning herself with a folder. “Ready to go, President Luo?”
“Help me carry the insulated containers.”
Zhao Min stared at the boxes, dumbfounded at the door for a moment, before rushing over to help. “President Luo, isn’t this a bit much? I thought celebrities were supposed to be on diets.”
“Sifei said this role doesn’t require it.”
After two or three trips, all the boxes were loaded, and the driver started the engine.
She had the van drive right up to the edge of the set, where Lin Sifei was in the middle of a scene. Luo Ke stood a short distance away, waiting for her.
She watched as Lin Sifei’s bright eyes seemed to lose their luster, as she tentatively felt her way forward, lost and confused.
She kept walking forward, and forward…
“Gotcha!” Lin Sifei grabbed Luo Ke’s wrist and looked up with a wide grin.
Luo Ke met her gaze, saw her own reflection in Lin Sifei’s eyes, and snapped back to reality. “You’re done filming?”
Lin Sifei nodded and linked her arm through Luo Ke’s. “What were you thinking about just now? You looked so troubled.”
“Did I?”
“You did.” Lin Sifei used her fingers to pull down the corners of her own eyes. “Like this.”
Luo Ke burst out laughing. “I was watching you act and got lost in the moment.”
“You mixed up reality and the film.” Lin Sifei stood on her tiptoes to plant a kiss on her cheek. “Is that clearer now?”
After the kiss, she quickly scanned their surroundings. Seeing that everyone else had dispersed for lunch, she breathed a sigh of relief.
“Kissing me even though you’re scared.” Luo Ke pinched her nose playfully. “Come on, let’s go eat too.”
Lin Sifei’s eyes lit up. “You really brought me lunch!”
“Of course. Acting is hard work. Of course I have to make sure you’re well-fed.” As she spoke, Luo Ke opened the insulated containers one by one and set them on the small table inside the nanny van.
“It smells so good.” Lin Sifei looked around. “You even specially arranged for a nanny van to come over.”
“From now on, this will be your van for pickups and drop-offs. And this is Xiao Wang, the driver.”
The driver, wearing sunglasses, gave a slight nod. Lin Sifei returned the gesture politely.
Luo Ke served her a bowl of rice. “Your assistant will be here this afternoon. She’s a woman.”
Lin Sifei was already eating. She nodded with her cheeks puffed out when she heard her.
“Are you sure you won’t really get fat?” Luo Ke asked, resting her chin on her hand as she watched her with a smile.
Lin Sifei shot her a glare. “I will not get fat! Absolutely not!”
She placed a piece of spare rib in Luo Ke’s bowl. “Even if I do get fat, you have to get fat with me.”
“And then we can lose the weight together?” Luo Ke picked up her bowl and took a smiling bite of the spare rib.
“That’s perfect. You can find a personal trainer then, and we can work out together.”
“Sounds good. The guest room downstairs isn’t being used anyway. We can turn it into a home gym.”
Lin Sifei nodded seriously as she gnawed on a spare rib.
Luo Ke noticed a drop of soup at the corner of her lips and couldn’t help but reach out and wipe it away with her thumb.
Lin Sifei looked up at her, just in time to see her bring the thumb to her own lips. With a curl of her tongue, she licked the soup away.
A boom went off in Lin Sifei’s ears as blood rushed to her head, a deep blush spreading from her cheeks all the way down her neck.
