Advent of the Cat
Clearing Out One of the Female Lead’s Supporters
Although her ally was a somewhat unreliable Ragdoll, having one was better than none. As long as she could successfully set it up for Yuan Mo to catch Yan Yafei hitting the cat just once, she refused to believe Yuan Mo wouldn’t wake up after such a direct impact.
If he was still lost in his obsession after that, then the man was hopeless. Just bury him.
“What’s that little head of yours thinking about now? Looking so worried, be careful you don’t get wrinkles.” Luo Ke carried her into the office and placed her on the desk.
Lowering her head, she saw the markings on the cat’s forehead and couldn’t help but laugh. “They’ll probably form right along the lines you have now.”
Lin Sifei didn’t understand at first and tilted her head at Luo Ke in confusion.
Of course, Luo Ke wouldn’t spell it out for her. She pretended not to know and turned on her computer.
Lin Sifei wrinkled her feline face, leaped onto a stack of folders, and turned her head toward the window. The glass reflected the markings on her head. She froze, her mouth slightly agape, then whipped her head around to look at Luo Ke.
Her paws were itching.
Luo Ke glanced at her, saw her pupils dilate into perfect circles, and silently raised a folder to shield herself. “My mistake.”
“Meeeow!” Lin Sifei launched herself into the air, landed on Luo Ke’s head, and proceeded to tangle all of her hair.
Soon, Luo Ke’s neatly tied-up hair was a chicken nest1, with a few pitiful, plucked strands of long hair remaining on her shoulders.
“President Luo, President Chen is here.”
“No need to announce her, I was planning to give her a surprise.”
Zhao Min and President Chen pushed the door open and stood at the entrance, staring at the chicken-nest hairdo in front of the desk and the cat perched within it.
Eight eyes met, looking at one another without a word.
Amid the silence, Zhao Min suddenly sucked in a sharp breath and slammed the door with all her might. With a heaven-shaking Kuang!, the heavy, solid wood door shut, sending a tremor through the entire floor.
“Was that an earthquake?”
“Seems to have stopped. Let’s get back to work.”
Inside the office, Lin Sifei realized she had caused trouble and quickly hopped down from Luo Ke’s head.
While Luo Ke was untying the elastic and removing the clips from her hair, Lin Sifei quickly pulled open a drawer. With both paws, she retrieved a comb and passed it over, then brought out a mirror.
Luo Ke swiftly combed her hair, restyling it into a bun, and then playfully poked Lin Sifei’s little belly with the handle of the comb.
Lin Sifei lifted a paw, swiped at the air, and bared her teeth.
Luo Ke handed the mirror and comb to her, walked to the door, and opened it with an apologetic smile. “My apologies, President Chen. That was a breach of etiquette.”
“Not at all, not at all. We’re both cat owners, I understand.” President Chen walked into the office with a smile and saw Lin Sifei sitting obediently on the desk.
“You keep your cat on the desk? Doesn’t she knock everything onto the floor?” As he spoke, he even made a sweeping gesture with his hand.
The fur on the back of Lin Sifei’s neck stood on end. She looked at Luo Ke. This President Chen was no cat-raising novice like Luo Ke. Otherwise… should she imitate it?
She stood up, ambled over to Luo Ke’s thick stack of files, and gave it a push with her paw. It didn’t budge. In her embarrassment, her claws extended, scratching against the folder with a ci la ci la sound.
“Sharpening her claws, haha. President Luo, you should prepare a scratching post in the office.”
Luo Ke heard him and nodded with a smile, then looked at Lin Sifei and raised an eyebrow at her.
Lin Sifei’s cheeks flushed slightly. Mortified, she lowered her head, her paws mechanically scratching at the folder.
Luo Ke watched her, unable to hold back her laughter.
President Chen, sitting to the side, looked at her with some surprise, then seemed to understand. Raising a cat really could improve one’s mood.
“President Luo, I’ve come today to discuss the investment you mentioned to me some time ago. The brick-and-mortar industry is facing a considerable blow right now. A rash investment could lead to huge losses.”
“If you didn’t intend to go through with it, President Chen, you wouldn’t have come to see me.” Luo Ke turned to face him. “In your opinion, what would be a safer way to proceed?”
“The way I see it…”
Lin Sifei listened to them rattle on and on, analyzing the market. She couldn’t understand a single sentence. It was clearly all Chinese, so how did it suddenly cross into another universe?
She licked her lips. Not wanting to disturb Luo Ke, she hopped off the desk herself and trotted out the door.
She planned to find a cool spot and be a salted fish2, or maybe find a place to listen to some gossip and eat some melons.3
Her tail curled into a slight arc as she trotted down the corridor, looking left and right for a suitable spot.
“Aiya! Kitty!”
The familiar childish voice made Lin Sifei’s raised paw pause. She turned her head and saw Chen Mingsi4 in a white t-shirt and denim shorts running toward her.
She opened her mouth, but before she could make a sound, Chen Mingsi had already pounced and scooped her up.
Lin Sifei kicked her legs, struggling for a good while before Chen Mingsi finally adjusted her grip and held her securely.
“Kitty, let’s play a game together. Last time I went home, I asked my cats to play with me, but they all ignored me.”
Lin Sifei shot her a sideways glance. In your eyes, am I just a tool-cat for gaming, devoid of all emotion?
Just as she was thinking this, Chen Mingsi carried her to a small table, set her down, and pulled a lunch box from a nearby bag. “These are little cookies my mom baked herself. They’re delicious.”
The moment she opened the box, a rich aroma filled the air. Lin Sifei’s nose twitched, and she couldn’t resist lifting a forepaw to peer inside the container.
There were enough for her and Chen Mingsi to share. Thinking about it, playing a game with this big sister of hers wasn’t so bad. It was just playing with a kid.
She let out a “meow,” swished her tail, and sat obediently on the table.
Seeing that she didn’t run away, Chen Mingsi first bribed her with a cookie. While Lin Sifei was busy eating, she quickly took out her phone and pulled up the game screen.
Lin Sifei nibbled on her cookie and saw that Chen Mingsi had switched to a different game from last time, though the essence was the same.
She wiped her paws on a napkin and began a frenzied tapping on the screen. After so much time practicing with a phone, she had already mastered the precise angles needed to ensure accurate screen touches.
Chen Mingsi’s rank shot up. She was ecstatic, pulling her chair closer to the table to play alongside Lin Sifei.
After a crazy burst of output, she had her character hide in a safe corner and took out another cookie to give to Lin Sifei.
Lin Sifei crunched on cookies with her. Chen Mingsi chatted with her as she laughed. Perhaps because she was used to talking to her cats at home, she didn’t find it strange at all to talk to a cat.
“I finally changed my name. I went and did it myself. But that uncle said I could only take my mom’s or dad’s surname, or my grandparents’. So I took my mom’s. I’m called Su Binglian5 now.”
She lowered her voice, leaning close to the cat’s ear. “My parents don’t know yet.”
Lin Sifei stared at the child before her with dead fish eyes. This kid really was that rabid fan from the novel who followed Yan Yafei around, frantically cheering her on.6
Even the cookies didn’t taste good anymore.
Lin Sifei looked at her naive and ignorant face and thought about President Chen, who was cooperating with Luo Ke. Could it be that later, when Luo Ke’s company ran into trouble, President Chen also had a hand in it? After all, his daughter requested it, to get in touch with Yuan Mo.
At this thought, she reached out her paw and gave Chen Mingsi’s head a thorough messing up.
Chen Mingsi, now sporting a chicken nest of her own, didn’t get angry. She burst out laughing and hugged the cat, ruffling her up in return. Lin Sifei’s fur was a mess all over. Her feline instincts made her entire body uncomfortable, yet she couldn’t bring herself to lick her fur clean.
She glared resentfully at Chen Mingsi, then leaped away and raced back toward Luo Ke’s office.
“Meow meow meow meow!” Lin Sifei circled Luo Ke’s legs.
Luo Ke was talking with President Chen. She looked down and was taken aback. “What happened to you?”
Lin Sifei turned to show her back. Luo Ke understood instantly, picking her up and helping her smooth out all her fur.
Lin Sifei shook her fur out comfortably and crouched on the desk, watching President Chen.
The novel never stated whether President Chen was involved. This unknown represented a risk. She was a little worried. If President Chen was a danger, it meant there were more potential threats than what had been revealed.
Luo Ke was being stared at by her, so intensely that the hairs on her arms stood up. She reached out and gave the cat’s bottom a pat. “Weren’t you out playing? Why did you run back?”
The jolt on her butt made Lin Sifei’s eyes fly wide open. She stared at Luo Ke in utter shock, her cat ears flushing crimson. Acting like a hooligan in public, so shameless!
Only after she had done it did Luo Ke realize what she’d done. She glanced awkwardly at President Chen, then stepped forward to scoop up the cat and walk out.
Taking advantage of being hidden in Luo Ke’s arms where President Chen couldn’t see, Lin Sifei extended her claws and swatted at Luo Ke repeatedly. She looked at the buttons on Luo Ke’s chest, and her cat ears turned red again.
She—she was just getting an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. She definitely had no other thoughts!
Lin Sifei lifted both paws and patted at the soft flesh.
Luo Ke’s lips were pressed into a tight line. When she reached the secretary’s desk, she shoved the cat into Zhao Min’s arms. “Take good care of her.”
Zhao Min took the cat, bewildered, and watched her boss walk back into the office with the tips of her ears slightly red.
“Is the office AC off? Why is it so hot?”
Not forgetting Luo Ke’s instructions, she placed Lin Sifei on the desk and rummaged around for a moment. She pulled out a magazine and placed it in front of Lin Sifei.
“There, good kitty. Look who this is. It’s you. Aren’t you beautiful?”
Lin Sifei lowered her head and saw a close-up of her own professional photo on the magazine. A kingly cat and expensive jewelry. After post-processing, the light in the cat’s eyes mirrored the sparkle of the gems. It was very well done, with a strong focus.
Lin Sifei looked at her magazine cover with satisfaction, bubbling with delight. She remembered it had been a while since she’d updated her account with cat photos. Now that the magazine was out, it was the perfect opportunity for some promotion.
She thought about how to take the pictures when she got home. Now that she didn’t have to hide it from Luo Ke, the photos could be much more exquisite than before.
As she was thinking, Chen Mingsi’s voice sounded again. The little girl trotted over. “Kitty, why did you run over here? Are you angry? I won’t mess up your fur next time.”
Lin Sifei turned her head and her eyes widened. The little girl was still sporting the chicken nest and was running around the company with it.
Why do I feel such a strong sense of guilt?
Zhao Min was also startled when she saw her and quickly pulled her over. “Little friend, how about Auntie re-braids your hair for you? Would you like a princess hairstyle?”
“Okay!” Chen Mingsi sat down obediently and let Zhao Min do her hair.
While seated, she didn’t forget to play with Lin Sifei. Seeing her pressing down on a magazine, she reached out curiously. “What’s this?”
Lin Sifei was completely unabashed, lifting a paw to let her see.
Chen Mingsi saw the cover photo at a glance, let out a gasp of admiration, moved the magazine to look at Lin Sifei, then back at the magazine. After several back-and-forths, she let out another gasp. “Kitty, is this picture you? So cool!”
Lin Sifei proudly lifted her head, giving her a sidelong glance.
Chen Mingsi covered her mouth in excitement, then pointed at her. “You look just like the cover like that.”
Seeing how much she liked the cat, Zhao Min said with a smile, “There’s a whole feature story on her inside this magazine.”
Chen Mingsi immediately flipped it open and, sure enough, found a spread of cat photos inside, along with descriptions of the accompanying gemstones.
Having been around her mother, Chen Mingsi had some ability to appreciate gems and gasped in awe at the sight of them.
“Luo Ke must really like you, letting you wear such expensive jewelry. I once tried to dress up my cat with my mom’s jewelry, and my mom gave me a beating.”
As she spoke, she grimaced and rubbed her bottom.
Lin Sifei imagined the scene. She wanted to hit someone, too.
Chen Mingsi was still admiring the cat’s beauty. “So beautiful. Kitty, you’re so good at taking pictures.”
She finished flipping through the photos in the magazine, still wanting more. Suddenly, she clapped her hands. “Oh, right! Kitty, let’s take some pictures together. I’ll post them.”
After saying that, she craned her neck to peek at Luo Ke’s office.
Zhao Min nearly lost her grip on the girl’s hair and quickly pressed her back down.
Chen Mingsi sat back down and patted her chest. “Good thing Luo Ke didn’t come out. She seems so fierce. She probably wouldn’t let us take pictures.”
Fearing Luo Ke might emerge, she quickly took out her phone, gathered the cat into her arms, and opened the camera. Remembering her hair wasn’t done yet, she urged anxiously, “Jiejie7, are you not done yet?”
“Almost, almost.” Zhao Min swiftly secured the last hairpin. “Done!”
Chen Mingsi took photos holding Lin Sifei. Lin Sifei felt her poses were too ugly, so she climbed up on her own to perch on the girl’s shoulder or struck climbing poses—in short, she fully showcased her perfect figure.
“The magazine, the magazine.” Chen Mingsi grabbed the magazine, holding it in one hand while taking photos with the cat. Finally, she took a separate photo of the cat with the magazine.
Chen Mingsi was clearly an expert photographer. After taking the shots, she adjusted the filters and posted a nine-square grid.8
Lin Sifei craned her neck to look and saw that her photos were actually quite good. She waited contentedly for her to post them.
Chen Mingsi had quite a few fans online, not because she was talented, but because she was rich. She was a typical two-dimensional world9 girl who bought merchandise until her hands went soft—the type who would buy life-sized character figures.
Because she was a fan of so many characters, she had a lot of figures at home. From time to-time, she would give away the ones she didn’t like in raffles and also share her daily life. People always enjoyed seeing the daily life of a baifumei10, even if she wasn’t very old.
After the photos were uploaded, comments quickly flooded in, with many people praising how beautiful the cat was.
Chen Mingsi replied in the comments section and happened to see someone post a link to the cat’s Weibo. She clicked on it and was shocked to find it was really the cat beside her.
“Is this you?”
Lin Sifei tilted her head and gave a cute meow.
Afraid she was mistaken, she went to ask Zhao Min. Zhao Min took a look and immediately recognized the photo taken in Luo Ke’s car; the interior matched Luo Ke’s.
“Yes, this car belongs to our President Luo.”
“Wow, she told me before she wouldn’t post pictures of her cat. How mean.” Chen Mingsi grumbled, but decisively followed the account.
She hugged Lin Sifei, and together they huddled over the phone looking at the photos, commenting from time to time.
“You really take such good pictures.” As she spoke, she opened a certain shopping app11 and decisively bought a thousand copies of the magazine.
Zhao Min, who had been peeking over her shoulder, saw this and her eyes went wide. “Why are you buying so many magazines?”
“The kitty is so cute. I’ll cut up the magazines when I get home and re-paste them into a little booklet.” She smiled and stroked Lin Sifei. “The rest I can give away in a raffle. A kitty this cute should be known by more people.”
Lin Sifei couldn’t help but smile. It seemed Chen Mingsi could be considered her fan now. She narrowed her eyes. It would be even better if she could win her over to her side.
“Right, I recently discovered a blogger with a super nice name.” She opened her follow list and pulled up Yan Yafei’s homepage. “See? Isn’t she really pretty too? She also did a magazine shoot. I’ll buy a bunch of those in a couple of days, too. It’s rare to find a name that suits my taste so well.”
Lin Sifei had black lines all over her head12. So you like Yan Yafei because her name is just as zhong’er13 as yours? Su Binglian, Yan Yafei… seems like there’s no difference!
Chen Mingsi held Yan Yafei’s photo closer to Lin Sifei’s face, as if she really wanted Lin Sifei to praise it too.
Lin Sifei’s eyes darted. She let out a deliberately vicious cry, her fur bristling as she arched her back and hissed at the photo.
Chen Mingsi was startled and shrank back. As a cat owner, she knew very well this was how a cat behaved when it felt threatened and was about to attack.
“Kitty, what’s wrong?”
At her question, Zhao Min beside them naturally explained, “That Yan Yafei used to be an employee at our company. She hit President Luo’s cat and even tried to feed her chocolate. Luckily, the cat was full that day and didn’t eat it.”
Trying to feed a cat chocolate was something no cat owner could tolerate. Chen Mingsi was just a child and didn’t have the same history with Yan Yafei as Yuan Mo did. The moment Zhao Min said it, she believed it completely, clenching her fists in righteous indignation. “That person is too awful!”
She immediately unfollowed her and even posted a special Weibo to condemn Yan Yafei.
Lin Sifei sat on the desk with her head tilted, watching her argue with a few of Yan Yafei’s fans. She shook her head helplessly.
This one was too easily fooled. It seemed she couldn’t be an ally. She already disliked Yan Yafei because of the cat, so let it end there. Someone who believed others too easily and got too close might end up accidentally hurting her own teammates down the line.
Lin Sifei stamped a “pitfall teammate” mark on Chen Mingsi’s forehead, then turned and jumped off the secretary’s desk, continuing her stroll through the company.
President Chen and Luo Ke talked for a long time. When he came out, he was all smiles. It seemed the collaboration was a happy one.
“Sisi, come and say goodbye to Jiejie Luo.”
Chen Mingsi had been about to go chase the cat but was stopped by her father. She could only walk over reluctantly and greet Luo Ke.
“Well then, President Luo, we’ll be going now. Please come visit our home when you have time.”
“Okay, take care.”
After seeing her guests off, Luo Ke undid her top button and took a breath. She looked at Zhao Min. “Where’s Xiaoxiao?”
“She ran over to the workstations again just now.”
Luo Ke shook her head helplessly and walked toward the office area to find her cat.
The president had appeared. Although it wasn’t for an inspection, everyone was still on high alert. To end this terrifying experience, Lin Sifei was quickly escorted and placed into Luo Ke’s arms.
Meow? Aren’t you all a little too skilled at catching cats?
Luo Ke tapped her nose and carried her back to the office.
“So? Did you have fun playing outside just now?”
Lin Sifei immediately puffed up her fur, stood tall and proud before her, and typed out the great deed of how she had just eliminated a potential ally of Yan Yafei.
Luo Ke hadn’t really cared much about Yan Yafei before, but her cat held a grudge, so she went along with it.
“Very impressive,” she said, smiling as she petted the cat’s head.
Seeing her dismissive attitude, Lin Sifei dodged her hand and narrowed her eyes. This was the perfect opportunity to give her a reminder.
【President Chen’s daughter likes Yan Yafei, and Yuan Mo also likes Yan Yafei. Yan Yafei doesn’t like you. Could they team up to deal with you?】
Luo Ke leaned back in her chair and thought about it seriously. “Luo Corporation just signed a huge deal with Bai’erluo. There are no problems in any sector, and no opportunities to exploit. Even if those two teamed up, they wouldn’t gain anything. Yuan Mo might be foolish enough to do something right now, but President Chen won’t let his daughter act recklessly.”
【Your Second Uncle meddled in the Bai’erluo matter last time and almost caused a disaster. What if something like that happens again?】
Lin Sifei’s intention was to remind her to be careful. It would be even better if she could get her Second Uncle out of the picture.
Unexpectedly, Luo Ke stroked her chin. “If something like that happens, it means there’s an insider in the company. Otherwise, it’s impossible to know what problems have occurred with internal company projects.”
She narrowed her eyes at Lin Sifei. “Why do I get the feeling you’re trying to warn me about something?”
Lin Sifei’s chrysanthemum tightened14. She tilted her head and widened her eyes, trying to act cute. No way, jiejie, she was just a simple and innocent little cat demon.
Luo Ke saw right through her attempt to muddle through, scooping her up onto her lap.
She squeezed the cat’s paw pads one by one. “I remember when I asked if you were a cat demon, you denied it so seriously. Why did you admit it so readily later on?”
Lin Sifei broke out in a nervous cold sweat. She shut her eyes. Worst case, I’ll just tell her about transmigrating into the book. Let Luo Ke know the true faces of those people and be on guard early.
Then she remembered how Luo Ke acted around her family, how she still seemed to protect them so fiercely. She had misunderstood her because of that last time. The thought made her angry.
“That’s not right, either. There are a lot of things you don’t know how to do. You couldn’t be a person if you’re this stupid.”
Lin Sifei’s fur instantly stood on end. You’re the stupid one! You’re stupid! At most, she was a cripple when it came to daily life. She used to have nannies and assistants; all she needed to know was how to act. Plenty of scientific geniuses were life cripples too!
Luo Ke, having been scratched a few times, couldn’t help but laugh. “Alright, alright, I won’t call you stupid. Look, you’ve gotten pretty good at using your phone.”
Her smile gradually faded, and she mumbled, “That’s right… you’re a cat demon who only recently became human. Why are you so familiar with a phone?”
The hairs on Lin Sifei’s body stood on end. She felt a pressure from the paw being squeezed by Luo Ke. It’s over, it’s over, I’m going to be exposed!
She squeezed her eyes shut, threw caution to the wind, took out her phone and typed, 【How is your family? The matter between your First Aunt and Second Aunt.】
Luo Ke also seemed to want to avoid the question of whether Lin Sifei was human or demon and immediately went along with the change of topic. “They’re still fighting. First Aunt and Second Aunt both refuse to get a divorce. What’s the point of maintaining a marriage like that?”
She pinched the bridge of her nose.
【Not even letting your brother-in-law off the hook, that can be considered a lack in private virtue.】
Luo Ke’s gaze shifted, her fingers tapping rapidly on the armrest of her chair.
Lin Sifei narrowed her eyes. She’s struggling.
Finally, Luo Ke propped up her forehead. “A lack in private virtue isn’t for a junior like me to comment on. She… she’s still a good person.”
Frustrated as if hating iron for not becoming steel15, Lin Sifei landed several punches on her stomach. You big idiot, Luo Ke! No wonder you’re being played for a fool by that bunch of idiots from the Luo family. Each one of you is stupider than the last! I’m so mad!
Luo Ke clutched her stomach, her face scrunched up as she rubbed Lin Sifei’s head. “But they’re the ones who raised me.”
Lin Sifei’s punching paused. She threw herself against Luo Ke’s neck, her paws hugging her.
Luo Ke smiled and stroked her. “I’m fine. I know they sometimes do things that aren’t very good, but they’re good to me. Their hearts aren’t bad.”
Lin Sifei was both angry and heartbroken. Ah, what breed of big fucking idiot has been raised here!
Still, Luo Ke was raised by them. It must be hard to cut ties.
It seemed she needed to quickly let Luo Ke see a normal family. Zhao Min, your chance for a promotion and a raise is here!
At the secretary’s desk, Zhao Min suddenly sneezed. “Am I catching a cold?”
