No Pouting
Pouting is for one person’s eyes only
Just as Lin Sifei had said, the character of Xiao Yue was not as endearing as Xiao Xing, and could easily be performed in a way that audiences would call a white lotus flower.1
Lin Sifei let Feng Xiao choose a scene herself, handing over the initiative.
Feng Xiao paged through the script and glanced at Luo Ke beside her. Although the other woman was still handling work, she had not missed the gazes she was sending over.
She smiled, a slight curl on her lips. “Then let’s perform this part. It’s the female lead’s highlight moment.”
Lin Sifei looked at the script, nodded, and took a step back, creating distance between them.
This part was an argument between Xiao Yue and Xiao Xing. Xiao Xing voices the pain she has suppressed in her heart, while Xiao Yue hopes her younger sister will see the depth of their sisterly bond. Although it seems to be the female lead’s home turf, it is precisely the part most likely to be labeled as a “white lotus flower.”
Feng Xiao took a deep breath and got into character, her eyes red as she accused Xiao Yue of her suffering. She couldn’t get love, she craved love, she admired a personality like Song Qi’s. She saw others living in the sunlight while she could only stand watching from the darkness, because she could not get rid of her blind older sister, nor could she get rid of the self that had survived for over a decade.
Her tears fell in an instant—aggrieved, resentful, pained, struggling. Everything but love.
Lin Sifei merely watched her performance with a cool gaze, sighing inwardly. Feng Xiao also raised her eyes, looking at her provocatively.
Yet Lin Sifei’s expression remained unchanged. Instead, she suddenly raised a hand, cupped Feng Xiao’s face, and silently wiped away the tears on her cheeks. Feng Xiao froze; this was not an action in the script.
Luo Ke had now completely lifted her head, her eyes fixed on Lin Sifei’s face, and on her hand. Her brows locked together, and she pressed her lips into a thin line.
Xiao Yue’s brows furrowed slightly, her eyes rimmed with red, but she still tried to force a smile. “Let’s go home. Tell Mom and Dad all of this yourself.”
Xiao Xing swatted her hand away. “Stop being so hypocritical.”
Xiao Yue’s face fell. “My concern for you is genuine. You can think I’m insincere, but right now, you are coming back with me.”
“Um…” Feng Xiao raised her hand, smiling awkwardly. “Feifei-jie2, you got your line wrong there.”
“I see no problem with appropriate ad-libbing.” Lin Sifei flipped through the script. “The female lead’s words and actions need to be more colloquial and concise. No one wants to watch a bunch of moralizing in a movie.”
She smiled at Feng Xiao. “Right, meimei.”3
Feng Xiao could only nod awkwardly. “Yes.”
“And?”
Feng Xiao looked at her, confused. Lin Sifei pouted. “Didn’t I tell you just now to see my skills? What did you think of my performance?”
“It was pretty good,” Feng Xiao said with a weak laugh. She glanced over at Luo Ke. A moment ago, she had been eagerly awaiting Lin Sifei to perform the female lead’s white lotus flower persona and had paid no attention at all to her acting skills.
Lin Sifei was relentless. “Tell me in detail. I want to hear some feedback too. Director Chen never gave me any before.”
A headache started to form for Feng Xiao. What kind of feedback could there be? The female lead’s character design was not as brilliant or complex as the second female lead’s to begin with. All one needed was an innocent face and the ability to cry. What acting skills were required?
Naturally, Lin Sifei did not miss the flicker of disdain in her eyes and shook her head helplessly. She had hoped to find a junior she could mentor, but with an attitude like this, it would be difficult to make it far in the industry. What a pity; her acting was actually quite good.
“Feifei.” Luo Ke’s brows knitted slightly as she stood up. “Finished acting? We can go.”
Seeing her in such a hurry, Lin Sifei walked over worriedly and lowered her voice. “It’s not more trouble at the company, is it?”
Luo Ke gave a vague “en” and packed up her laptop.
Lin Sifei quickly bent down to help her pack, afraid of delaying her. “Actually, if it’s really hard to handle, you don’t have to be so stubborn. You still have me. I get paid for acting, and I’m going to be famous.”
Luo Ke looked at her worried face, as if the company was about to go bankrupt the very next second, and couldn’t help but laugh. “Even if there’s a little trouble at the company, it’s not that dire. Don’t worry.”
She reached out and ruffled Lin Sifei’s hair, feeling a little gratified. Her cat was quite concerned about her. She was probably much more important than that Feng Xiao.
“A thousand-li4 embankment collapses from an ant’s hole. How can you be so arrogant? You must be careful and cautious.” Lin Sifei spoke with a bitter mouth and a grandmother’s heart,5 urging her. This Luo Ke was so confident, which was why she would suffer such a huge blow later on.
“I’ll remember that.” Luo Ke had not expected a casual remark to make Lin Sifei so worried.
Stepping into the elevator, Lin Sifei took the laptop bag from her hand. “Carrying a laptop all the time is heavy. I’ll hold it for you.”
“Then hold it tight. It’s full of important documents.”
Lin Sifei nodded forcefully, her grip tightening.
Once in the car, Lin Sifei decisively transformed back into a cat, patting her clothes down before craning her neck to get closer to the air conditioning vent.
Luo Ke pressed down on her neck, pushing her aside. “Don’t be greedy for the cold air. If you catch a cold, you’ll have to take medicine.”
Lin Sifei let out a meow, staring at her with a pair of large, watery eyes. She shook the fur on her body and lifted a paw to show her. This thick coat of fur was very hot; it was too cruel not to let her have some AC.
Luo Ke stroked the fur on her body. “Otherwise, I could take you to get your fur shaved.”
Lin Sifei’s eyes instantly widened, and she rested a paw threateningly on Luo Ke’s arm. Someone’s asking for a scratching again.
Luo Ke burst out laughing. “I wonder if you’ll turn into a bald cat after a shave, hahaha.”
Very good. You’re definitely asking for it. Lin Sifei showed no mercy, leaving three neat lines on her arm.
Luo Ke sucked in a sharp breath, then vigorously tousled her head, rubbing so hard that Lin Sifei lost her balance and tumbled to the side.
“MEOW!” Lin Sifei raised both front paws, ready to pounce on her.
Luo Ke instantly put both hands on the steering wheel. “Don’t mess around, I’m driving.”
Lin Sifei retracted her claws and narrowed her eyes. She waited until they hit a red light and Luo Ke stopped the car, then she pounced with claws out.
Luo Ke was honorably rewarded with claw marks on both arms. They felt hot, and the sensation of the AC blowing over them was strangely peculiar.
Lin Sifei held her phone, her fingers tapping away. 【Roll up your sleeves when you get to the company.】
“Why?”
【Let the whole company condemn you for bullying a cat.】
Luo Ke raised her eyebrows in surprise. “I’m the one who got scratched. Shouldn’t they be condemning you? Look at what you’ve done.”
She held her arm out in front of Lin Sifei, letting her see the red marks.
Lin Sifei squinted to get a closer look. She had controlled her strength well; there were no deep wounds, only scratches. But looking at the several marks, she felt a bit guilty. Had she gone too far?
She raised her eyes, secretly peeking at Luo Ke’s expression.
Luo Ke was looking straight ahead, concentrating on driving, with a faint smile on her lips.
She’s not even angry. She has such a good temper. Lin Sifei’s cheeks grew a little warm. She lowered her head and saw the red marks on her arm, then guiltily bent down and pressed her lips to them.
The soft tip of her nose and her furry mouth touched the arm. Luo Ke jerked her hand back. She whipped her head to look at the passenger seat. Lin Sifei was looking at her with big cat eyes. “Meow?“
She pulled out her phone. “Does it hurt a lot? Should we go to the hospital?”
Luo Ke licked her lips. “No, it doesn’t hurt.”
The tips of her ears were slightly red. A moment ago, when Lin Sifei had kissed her, she had actually thought of the way Lin Sifei, wrapped in a blanket at night, had demanded kisses from her.
Luo Ke took a deep breath, lowered the AC temperature by two degrees, and aimed it at herself. She took another deep breath, admonishing herself to be a human6 and not have all sorts of thoughts about a mere cat.
Lin Sifei watched the AC blast directly at her and wrinkled her nose. She won’t let me have any, but she’s enjoying it herself. How unfair.
Retribution came swiftly. When they got home that evening, Luo Ke felt her nose was a bit stuffy.
“I think I’ve caught a cold.” Her voice was nasal and buzzy, making her sound unusually aggrieved.
Lin Sifei changed back into a human after closing the door, wrapped herself in a bathrobe, and helped support her. “And you were lecturing me. Turns out you’re the first to get sick. Sit down, I’ll find you some medicine.”
Luo Ke let herself be supported, amused. “I have a cold, not a broken leg.”
Lin Sifei shot her a glare and pouted. “I’m caring about you, and you’re getting hung up on this? Your… your focus is way off.”
Luo Ke felt she was right. Her focus was indeed quite off. Right now, she should be thanking Lin Sifei for her concern, yet instead, she reached out and pinched Lin Sifei’s cheeks. “Don’t just pout at anyone in the future.”
“Why not?” Lin Sifei’s mouth was squeezed into the shape of a little duck, her words muffled. “Am I not cute like this?”
It’s precisely because you’re cute that you’re not allowed to pout. Luo Ke remembered the way she had pouted at Feng Xiao. “You’re someone who’s going to be an actress. If you’re pouting on TV all the time, they’ll say you’re being fake.”
Lin Sifei struggled to rescue her face, rubbing her cheeks. “I’m not afraid of what they say. Besides, my on-screen image isn’t like this. I’m not going for the sweet style, so I won’t be pouting.”
Luo Ke breathed a small sigh of relief. At least a crowd of people would not get to see it. “Then don’t pout at others, either. Maintain your persona.”
“I don’t need to. Especially with directors, acting cute is very useful. When a shot doesn’t turn out well, you can act cute to get a retake.” Lin Sifei shared her experience earnestly.
Following her description, Luo Ke pictured her clinging to Director Chen’s arm, pouting and acting cute.
Her face instantly darkened. “No! Director Chen is a married man!”
Lin Sifei stared at her. “What are you thinking? I rely on my cuteness to make people unable to refuse me. Who would actually want to… you know? Your thoughts are filthy.”
Luo Ke covered her forehead and waved her hand. “My head is probably not very clear. Don’t mind me.”
Lin Sifei felt her forehead worriedly. “You don’t have a fever, do you?”
She ran to get the first-aid kit, first handing her a thermometer, then picking out some cold medicine and going to pour her hot water.
The thermometer showed a normal temperature. It was probably just a minor cold.
Lin Sifei mixed a powdered medicine for her, watched seriously as she drank it all, and took the cup. “Go wash up and go straight to sleep. No more work today.”
“There’s still a little…”
Lin Sifei stood with her hands on her hips, glaring. “Then go get under the covers in bed and look at it. I’ll go heat up the food and bring it up to you.”
“You don’t have to, I…”
“Do as I say!” Lin Sifei picked up her laptop and scurried upstairs.
Luo Ke was helpless and could only follow her up.
Lin Sifei tidied the bed, had her sit in it, and placed a jacket next to her. “You must stay warm. I’m going downstairs now.”
Luo Ke grabbed her arm, unconvinced. “Do you know how to use a microwave?”
“I looked it up. It’s pretty convenient.” Lin Sifei smiled and waved her phone.
Dinner was sumptuous. Lin Sifei looked up each dish to see if it was suitable for someone with a cold, removed a few that were not, and heated the rest. She arranged it all on a tray and brought it upstairs.
There was a small table in the house, originally prepared because Lin Sifei liked to curl up in bed to watch movies. Now, it served nicely as a dining table.
Luo Ke watched her bring the dishes over one by one and tried to struggle. “My cold isn’t very serious. I can go downstairs to eat.”
“No need, no need, I’ve already brought it all up.” Lin Sifei stuffed the bowl of rice and chopsticks into Luo Ke’s hands. “Eat.”
She sat across from Luo Ke. Heads close together, they ate at the small table.
As Luo Ke ate, she glanced up at Lin Sifei and, seeing her slightly puffed-out cheeks, couldn’t help but smile.
She did not know when, but she had grown used to having someone eat with her. Coming home was no longer a business-like routine of eating and sleeping, but had gained some other joys.
“Since you’ve turned into a person like this, what will you do tomorrow?”
“I’ve already chosen the two important roles. The rest can be left to Director Chen. Why else would we spend money to hire him?” Lin Sifei ate a piece of braised pork, her eyes squinting in satisfaction. “This is delicious. You try some.”
Luo Ke picked up a piece, and they smiled at each other.
That night, Luo Ke’s nose was stuffy, making her a little restless.
Lin Sifei lay next to her, patting her back and softly singing a lullaby.
Luo Ke wrapped an arm around her waist, her breath ghosting over the side of her neck.
Sensing the person beside her gradually falling asleep, Lin Sifei carefully got out of bed and stretched her stiff body.
She drank the water from her cup, walked to the bed, and pulled the curtain open a crack, looking at the quiet street outside. She stared blankly at the dim streetlights when she suddenly saw a car drive into view. It was Yuan Mo’s car.
Lin Sifei froze. Ever since Luo Ke had warned Yuan Mo last time, she had forgotten about his existence.
She saw Yan Yafei get out of Yuan Mo’s car, seemingly wiping away tears. Yuan Mo put an arm around her shoulder and walked toward his villa.
Lin Sifei watched it all with dead fish eyes7, just as she had guessed; there was no way Yuan Mo would have a sudden awakening because of a few words.
She watched Yuan Mo open the door. A Ragdoll cat poked its head out, rubbing against Yuan Mo’s pant leg. Yuan Mo bent down, picked it up, and held its paw to wave at Yan Yafei.
Oho, this is interesting. Lin Sifei’s hand went to the base of her own tail as the memory of having it pulled resurfaced. This Ragdoll’s tail looked even better for pulling than hers. Yan Yafei would not let it go, would she?
She seemed to have found an ally.
“Xiaoxiao? Still not sleeping?” Luo Ke’s sleepy voice sounded.
Lin Sifei jumped, quickly dropping the curtain and lying back down on the bed. “Just got up for a drink of water. Let’s sleep.”
“Singing must be hard on your throat. You don’t have to sing anymore.”
“It’s not tiring.” Lin Sifei smiled and hugged her waist. “I really enjoy singing.”
Luo Ke chuckled and hugged her back. They faced each other, and Lin Sifei watched as Luo Ke fell back asleep. Facing her, Lin Sifei swallowed. As if her heart was bewitched by a ghost8, she leaned forward and planted a kiss on her lips.
After the kiss, Lin Sifei snapped her eyes shut, her entire body burning up. Sleep, sleep, I’m so sleepy.
Luo Ke finished changing and looked at the cat sleeping spread-eagled on the bed. She smiled and poked her head. “Time to get up, little lazy cat.”
Lin Sifei smacked her lips, looking at her with sleepy eyes.
Luo Ke picked her up and walked downstairs.
Being jostled around, Lin Sifei finally woke up. Looking at Luo Ke’s face, she patted her nose with her paw. “Meow~“
“My cold is already better.” Luo Ke had a good constitution. She had only felt a bit unwell yesterday. After taking medicine and keeping warm, she was full of energy after a night’s sleep.
Lin Sifei had slept in human form all night and was probably forced to change back into a cat in the middle of the night. She yawned. Now she would have to be a cat for twelve hours. She had to take this chance to get in touch with the silly Ragdoll next door.
“Let’s go to the company together today.” Luo Ke smiled and got her cat food. “Why didn’t you turn back into a cat last night? Now you can only be a cat.”
Lin Sifei glanced at her face, her ears turning slightly red as she lowered her head. What other reason could there be? It was because she had been held all night. She lifted a paw to touch her face. She had been bewitched by beauty, otherwise why wouldn’t she have turned into a cat?
She lowered her head and ate her cat food. She had not eaten it in a while and was still a little unaccustomed to it.
But she was not too annoyed. Who could blame her when last night’s Luo Ke looked so good you couldn’t bear to turn into a cat? She wanted to hold her, to give Luo Ke a place to lean on.
She licked her lips, her belly full.
“Finished eating? Let’s go to the company.”
Lin Sifei’s eyes darted around. She picked up her phone. 【I want to stay home today.】
“Why?”
【That Ragdoll cat from last time sent out a distress signal. I want to go check on it.】
Luo Ke’s face immediately soured. “That one from the blind date? Don’t you dislike male cats?”
【I don’t like him. I’m just going to check out of sympathy.】
Luo Ke took a deep breath, a knot of frustration in her chest. But she couldn’t well refuse her. She held out her hands. “Come here, I’ll carry you over.”
【You can go to work, it’s fine.】
This made Luo Ke even more uneasy. It sounded exactly like a secret rendezvous with a little lover. She raised an eyebrow. “It’s fine. I’ll take you to see him, and then we’ll go to the company together.”
Lin Sifei was helpless and could only hope Yan Yafei was already gone. She did not want Yan Yafei and Luo Ke to meet often; her intuition told her it would not be a good thing.
Luo Ke carried her over and knocked on Yuan Mo’s door. The one who opened it was Yan Yafei, dressed in a nightgown.
Seeing each other, both Luo Ke and Yan Yafei were stunned for a moment.
Luo Ke quickly recovered from her surprise and asked, “Is Yuan Mo home?”
“Yuan Mo-gege9 is washing up. Are you looking for him for something?” Yan Yafei blocked the doorway with the air of the lady of the house.
“I came to see his cat.” Luo Ke looked at her. “Is blocking the door a habit of yours? I’d trouble you to change it.”
She walked straight forward. In her arms, Lin Sifei revealed her nails and sharp teeth. Frightened, Yan Yafei shrank back.
Luo Ke took the opportunity to close the door and walked over to sit on the living room sofa.
Yan Yafei took a deep breath. “That’s not very polite. Yuan Mo-gege didn’t say you could come in.”
Luo Ke didn’t even deign to give her a glance. She carefully observed her surroundings, and seeing a pile of cat toys, she reflected on whether she should also prepare some for Xiaoxiao.
“I’m talking to you,” Yan Yafei’s voice rose a few notches.
“Feifei, who is it?” Yuan Mo walked out, drying his hair with a towel.
Hearing the voice, Luo Ke looked up. Yuan Mo, standing on the stairs, froze for a second before quickly pulling the lapels of his bathrobe tighter, hiding the pectoral muscles he had been intentionally showing off.
He laughed awkwardly and sat on the sofa. “President Luo, what brings you here?”
“I came to see your Ragdoll cat. My Xiaoxiao wants to play with her,” Luo Ke said, stroking the head of the cat in her arms.
Hearing this, Yuan Mo’s mouth twitched. “This… She won’t hit Shuaishuai10 again, will she?”
“She won’t. She has a very gentle temperament.”
Remembering the look of anticipation on her face last time, Yuan Mo felt that Luo Ke was seeing things through a ten-layer filter.
But since Luo Ke had asked, he couldn’t very well refuse. He could only call for Shuaishuai, find the Ragdoll cat, and bring him over.
As soon as Shuaishuai entered the living room, he flinched. He looked at Yan Yafei, then at Lin Sifei, and his eyes rolled back as if he wanted to faint.
“Meow!” Playing faint is useless. Lin Sifei jumped from the sofa to the floor, standing before him.
“Meow~” I’m asking you, did that Yan Yafei hit you or not?
Shuaishuai’s eyes widened. Forgetting last time’s lesson, he moved closer to Lin Sifei. “How did you know! But she didn’t really hit me. It’s just that yesterday, when I wanted to go into the bedroom, she kicked me out.”
Shuaishuai lay on the floor, aggrieved. “My back still hurts. She kicks really hard.”
“Didn’t you cry out?” Lin Sifei sat down a little ways away from him, disgusted.
Shuaishuai didn’t notice and recalled yesterday. “I did.”
“And Yuan Mo didn’t come out to see what was wrong?”
At this, Shuaishuai felt even more wronged. “He came out, but that bad woman lied. She said I accidentally bumped my head.”
He sighed. “I got kicked by her and hid behind a potted plant, so Master really thought I just bumped my head.”
“Do you bump your head often?” Lin Sifei looked at him with disdain.
Shuaishuai lowered his head in embarrassment. “Well, not that often.”
Lin Sifei hesitated. Is it a bad idea to have an ally who’s too stupid? She saw the Ragdoll cat looking toward Yuan Mo and turned her head to see Yuan Mo and Yan Yafei talking and laughing.
Shuaishuai’s eyes reddened, and he lay on the floor without moving.
Lin Sifei sighed. “Let me tell you, the next time she touches you, you scratch her and bite her. Didn’t she kick you? Don’t run away. Pounce on her and bite her.”
“Huh? Then she’ll definitely hit me even harder,” Shuaishuai said, shaking his head in fear.
“Of course. You have to pick a time when Yuan Mo is also around. When you scratch her, you have to cry out, as pitifully as you possibly can. The moment Yuan Mo is drawn over, you lie on the ground and pretend your leg is broken, or you’re badly injured. You have to be weak.”
Shuaishuai was still a little scared. He was afraid of pain, and he was a very gentle cat, a total scrub at fighting. He didn’t dare scratch or bite anyone. Besides, this woman didn’t come over often. Next time she came, he’d just hide.
Lin Sifei saw through his thoughts with a single glance and snorted coldly. “You think this woman will let you go just because you back down? She will definitely badmouth you to your master and make him get rid of you. Then you’ll be a stray cat.”
Shuaishuai’s eyes widened. It was not like he had never seen stray cats before. Back at the pet hospital, stray cats were often sent for treatment, usually covered in fleas, struggling in pain.
He couldn’t help but tremble. He did not want to become like that.
Lin Sifei patted his head. “Listen to me, you can’t go wrong.”
Her paw was still on Shuaishuai’s head when Yuan Mo suddenly shot over, scooped Shuaishuai up, and retreated several steps.
Lin Sifei was so startled she leaped up and ran toward Luo Ke.
Luo Ke’s brows furrowed. “You scared my cat.”
Yuan Mo rubbed his nose awkwardly. “I just saw her hitting Shuaishuai again. Is Shuaishuai okay?”
Lin Sifei nestled in Luo Ke’s arms, looking at Shuaishuai acting cute and then at Yan Yafei’s jealous expression, feeling refreshed and cheerful.
She hooked Luo Ke’s clothes and rubbed against her. “Meow~“
Luo Ke stood up, holding Lin Sifei. “Xiaoxiao probably didn’t hit him. Don’t worry. If there’s nothing else, I’ll be going now.”
Yuan Mo gave a perfunctory “goodbye” and continued to part the fur on Shuaishuai’s head, worriedly checking for wounds.
After walking out the door, Luo Ke sent Yuan Mo a message.
Yuan Mo took out his phone to look, his brow furrowing slightly.
【It’s not very safe for cats at home. Besides securing the windows, I suggest you install a security camera.】
