I Always Feel Like the Cat Can Understand Human Speech
Let’s just call you Xiao Xiao
Lin Sifei took another nap in the office. By the time she woke up again, the sun was setting in the western mountains1.
She yawned, lifted a paw to rub her eyes, and turned her head to see Luo Ke packing things up, so she meowed at her.
Luo Ke took her home. The moment she opened the door, she was startled by the delivery boxes piled up in the living room.
Wu Ma, hearing the noise, came out from the kitchen. “Miss Luo, you’re back so early today.”
“What are these packages?”
“Miss Bai sent them over. She said they’re for the cat.”
Luo Ke frowned, picked up a utility knife, and began opening the packages one by one.
A cat bed, cat litter, a scratching post, catnip, a cat tree… what should be there, was all there2, and could not be counted to the end3.
Luo Ke shook her aching hand and tossed the utility knife back into the drawer. She picked up Lin Sifei and stuffed her into the cat bed.
Lin Sifei’s head banged against the side of the cat bed, and she stretched out a paw to bat at Luo Ke’s hand.
Luo Ke leaned over the cat bed, prodding her.
Having grown accustomed to her own king-sized bed, there was no way Lin Sifei would be satisfied with this tiny cat bed. She kept trying to run out.
After stuffing her back in twice, Luo Ke stood up, exasperated. “It seems you don’t like it.”
Lin Sifei huffed twice and started climbing onto the sofa. She felt the sofa was a much more suitable size.
Luo Ke shook her head helplessly. “Wu Ma, you can take the cat bed away tomorrow.”
“Alright.”
Among the many gifts, Lin Sifei preferred the cat tree. It was a good way to practice her climbing and jumping skills, giving her a means of escape if she ever encountered someone like the female lead again.
Thinking of the female lead, she resentfully extended her claws. She had originally felt a little guilty about getting her fired, but now, things were different. Since she had offended her, then she couldn’t be blamed for not holding back.
She let out two cold sneers, revealing her small, sharp teeth. A baby bottle nipple was suddenly stuffed into her mouth, and she blinked foolishly. Luo Ke held it with satisfaction. “This is more convenient. It won’t get your fur dirty.”
Lin Sifei’s brow furrowed. She spat out the nipple, successfully getting her fur and the sofa dirty.
Luo Ke’s face darkened. She put down the baby bottle. “Wu Ma, please clean the sofa.”
Lin Sifei huffed twice. Trying to fight me? I’m not using a baby bottle.
That night, Lin Sifei curled up on the sofa, tossing and turning, but she didn’t feel the least bit sleepy.
She had slept too much during the day and now couldn’t fall asleep at all.
She sighed, jumped down from the sofa, and wandered around the living room. Glancing upstairs, she began to climb the staircase.
After a difficult trek, Lin Sifei finally made it to the top.
There were many rooms on the second floor, all with their doors closed. Lin Sifei couldn’t tell which one was Luo Ke’s bedroom.
She walked a full circle and returned to the top of the stairs. Staring at the steep staircase, she swallowed hard. She had the courage to go up but not to go down. She decided she might as well stay on the second floor.
She remembered watching videos where other cats could jump up and grab doorknobs. She tried it herself, backing up two steps before leaping forcefully, pouncing toward the doorknob.
Thud. Her forehead hit the door panel squarely. She fell to the ground, dizzy, and lay on her back without moving.
Inside the room, Luo Ke was holding her laptop, looking through files on the Bai’erluo4 Company. This collaboration was a stepping stone for her company to reach the next level; she had to take it seriously.
Suddenly, a dull thud echoed in the silent room. She frowned, set aside her laptop, and lifted her pillow, revealing a dagger underneath. She carefully walked to the door, pressed her ear against it to listen for any movement outside, and then abruptly pulled it open.
“Meow~” A soft meow sounded as a small cat head poked in and looked at her.
“Oh, it’s you.” Luo Ke put the dagger away and reached out to pick her up.
Lin Sifei was stiffly placed on the desk, her eyes still fixed on the dagger.
Luo Ke followed her gaze to the dagger and put it back under the pillow.
Lin Sifei’s brow furrowed. She didn’t remember any particularly dangerous plot points in the original book. Why would Luo Ke keep something like this for sleeping?
She nervously shuffled her paws, getting the feeling5 that she had switched channels from a Mary Sue6 romance drama to a □□ crime investigation show.
Lin Sifei shook her paws and jumped onto the bed. She curled up by the headboard, a pair of round eyes watching Luo Ke. “Meow~”
Luo Ke rubbed her temples helplessly, then lifted the covers and got into bed. Lin Sifei settled down right next to her pillow.
She closed her eyes and, for once, surprisingly didn’t suffer from insomnia, sinking into a deep sleep.
Lin Sifei watched as Luo Ke’s tense brow gradually relaxed in sleep and reached out a paw to cover the spot between her eyebrows. So she keeps a straight face all the time when she’s awake. It must be exhausting.
As the youngest “Three Golds Movie Queen,” Lin Sifei held a high status in the entertainment industry. Although she wasn’t on good terms with her family, she was still a fuerdai7, and no one dared to offend her. She had always been unrestrained, speaking her mind and confronting anyone and everyone in the entertainment world.
Lin Sifei couldn’t help but sigh. Could this be why God had her reborn as a cat? To keep the villain company. She remembered that the villain’s original cat was quite aloof. Having a cat you couldn’t pet8 would be pure torture.
“Meow meow meow meow—” Don’t worry, I’ll let you pet me.
Lin Sifei curled into a ball, hugged her tail, and fell asleep as well.
Luo Ke was deep in a dream. She felt as if she were floating on water, enveloped by its icy chill. She kept her eyes open, staring at the gray, overcast sky, waiting for herself to wake up from the dream.
Suddenly, something warm pressed against her forehead. Her eyes widened in surprise. The icy water receded, and everything faded into a vast expanse of white.
“I’ll give you—”
“What?” She couldn’t hear what the person was saying and couldn’t help but tilt her head in their direction.
“Is Luo Ke sick in the head?!”
“Luo Ke is a huge SB9!”
“Cold-blooded and heartless! Your father!”
“You just wait!”
The furious roars made Luo Ke’s eardrums ache. She covered her ears and took a couple of sharp breaths.
Who’s cursing at me? I don’t recognize this voice.
She rubbed her ears and sat for a while to calm down. It was probably a company employee, or maybe someone from a rival company. There were quite a few people who disliked her.
“You big idiot who doesn’t know how to raise a cat.”
Luo Ke pressed her fingers to her temples. Alright, the scope has narrowed.
“But her figure is amazing~”
Luo Ke’s face darkened. A stalker? A hidden camera?
“Sweet dreams.”
Luo Ke was so angry her chest heaved, and she could barely breathe. What normal person could have sweet dreams after being cursed at and spied on?
She shot her eyes open in a rage. A sliver of morning sunlight shone through the curtains. Luo Ke looked down and found the source of the tightness in her chest from the dream: the cat was lying on her chest, fast asleep.
Luo Ke gathered the cat in the blanket and carefully placed her to the side. She walked barefoot off the bed, pulled open the curtains, and stared blankly at the dazzling sunlight outside.
It had been a long time since she had slept until dawn. She always woke up with a start in the early morning, plagued by nightmares as if by a curse.
The phone on her nightstand began to vibrate. She picked it up; it was Special Assistant Lin.
“President Luo, has something happened? You didn’t come to work today.”
Luo Ke was surprised. She glanced at her phone screen and stared at the “9:00” displayed there for a moment. She rubbed her temples. “It’s nothing, I overslept. I’ll be there soon.”
“Should I reschedule your morning appointments to the afternoon?”
“Go ahead.”
Luo Ke looked at the soundly sleeping cat, didn’t wake her, and quietly went downstairs.
Wu Ma had already prepared breakfast and was sitting on the sofa waiting for her.
“Oh my, Miss Luo, you’re finally down. I was worried something had happened and was wondering if I should go up.”
Luo Ke had previously hired her to cook three meals and clean, with the instruction that she was not to enter the rooms on the second floor.
“I’m fine.” Luo Ke sat down at the dining table to eat. “Wu Ma, I’ll give you a raise. Please stay here today and help me look after the cat.”
“Oh, my schedule isn’t very flexible. I’m supposed to go to the amusement park with my grandson this afternoon. We already made plans.”
“Then just the morning is fine. You don’t need to stay for the afternoon.”
“Alright.”
Luo Ke hastily finished her breakfast, grabbed her bag, and left.
When Lin Sifei woke up, she saw the empty bedroom and shot up, instantly wide awake.
She jumped off the bed and dashed into the washroom, the bathroom, and the walk-in closet, but Luo Ke was nowhere to be seen. She called out twice, then ran to the top of the stairs. Staring at the steep steps, she yelled at the top of her lungs.
She refused to believe Luo Ke would leave her, a lone cat, at home.
After a couple of cries, Wu Ma came upstairs happily. “Mimi, can’t you get down? I’ll carry you.”
Lin Sifei was carried downstairs in a daze. The moment she was let go, she shot off like a motorcycle, darting from one room to another, searching everywhere.
“Are you looking for Miss Luo? She went to the office.”
Lin Sifei’s running feet slowed, and she let out a dejected meow. She really left.
Wu Ma stroked her head. “Missing your owner already.”
Lin Sifei looked at Wu Ma and looked up to the sky and let out a long sigh10. She only knew Luo Ke wouldn’t leave her alone, but she had forgotten about Wu Ma.
After drinking another bowl of goat’s milk, Lin Sifei lay on the sofa. Without a phone, what joy was there in life?
She rolled onto her back, belly up, and stared blankly at the air. Her thoughts drifted aimlessly. As they drifted, Lin Sifei once again thought about how off the female lead had been, and about the dagger from last night.
She propped her chin on her paws. It seems that after this became a real world, the characters and plot have started to differ from the original book’s design. This means the world isn’t strongly enforcing the plot. In that case, helping Luo Ke stay away from the female lead should be feasible.
The book said that the female lead wasn’t qualified to participate in this project proposal, but she was forced into it by a high-level executive. Combined with what Xiao Zhao said about a director, it should be the same person. This director is a problem. I don’t know how much say he has. If he insists, the female lead might still be able to stay.
She let out a cry and kicked her legs in frustration. Being a cat was too limiting. She had no information and had to rely entirely on guesswork.
With a sigh, Lin Sifei jumped off the sofa. Her eyes suddenly landed on the delivery boxes that hadn’t been cleared away yet. She flexed her paws, a sudden urge to crawl inside welling up within her.
She glanced left and right. Wu Ma was in the dining room playing on her phone and not looking at her. She tiptoed over and climbed into a cardboard box. She wiggled her legs, rolling around inside with immense joy.
After she was done rolling, she climbed the cat tree and batted at a ball of yarn, trying to train herself into an agile cat.
Exercising for a while, then resting for a while, Lin Sifei summoned the perseverance she had from learning martial arts on film sets and stuck to a strict schedule.
At noon, the housekeeper prepared more goat’s milk for her and also fed her some fruit. Lin Sifei smacked her lips, full and content.
Suddenly, her ears twitched. She heard the sound of the garage door opening. She leaped off the sofa and ran to the front door, wagging her tail as she waited.
The moment the door opened, she immediately tilted her head and lifted a paw. “Meow~”
Luo Ke changed her shoes and glanced at her. “Don’t cats not wag their tails?”
Lin Sifei’s tail froze, instantly shooting up as straight as a telephone pole.
Luo Ke frowned and bent down to look at her. “Why do I get the feeling you can understand what I’m saying?”
Lin Sifei’s heart pounded in terror. She licked her lips and started hopping and skipping around Luo Ke’s high heels. I can’t understand, I can’t understand. I’m just a little kitty.
Finally, she heard Luo Ke sigh. “What am I thinking? I must be going crazy.”
She nodded at Wu Ma, who untied her apron. “The food is all cooked, and the cat has been fed. I’ll be leaving now.”
“Okay.”
Lin Sifei watched her eat alone at the dining table, the only sound in the room the occasional clinking of utensils.
Her ears twitched. It was too quiet, and it felt a bit oppressive. She meowed and pushed a ball of yarn over with her head, weaving around Luo Ke’s feet. As Luo Ke ate, she would occasionally watch her pounce on and bite the yarn ball.
Lin Sifei peeked at her and saw a faint smile appear on her lips. The sight made the entire cat freeze for a moment. The ball of yarn rolled away, and she pounced on empty air, falling flat on the floor.
“Pfft, silly cat.”
Lin Sifei covered her chin and meowed at her: You’re the silly one.
After Luo Ke finished her meal and cleared the dishes, the phone on the table chimed.
She dried her hands, picked up the phone, and saw it was a message from Bai Xingrui.
【Bai Xingrui: How is it? Is the kitty cute?】
【Luo Ke: It’s a pain in the neck. Come and get it already.】
【Bai Xingrui: Nope. What name did you give the cat?】
Luo Ke looked at the cat on the chair. A name? She really hadn’t thought about it.
【Luo Ke: Trouble.】
【Bai Xingrui: Just pick one.】
Luo Ke turned her head to look at the cat rolling the ball of yarn nearby, remembering that Xiao Zhao had asked the same question. A name, huh—
After a long while, she picked up her phone and typed two characters.
【Xiao Xiao11】
Bai Xingrui’s reply was instantaneous, a dissatisfied complaint. 【Isn’t that name a bit too half-hearted?】
Luo Ke ignored her, put the phone in her pocket, and bent down to scoop the cat up with both hands.
Lin Sifei looked at her, bewildered.
“Xiao Xiao.” Luo Ke smiled, then brought her into her arms and stroked her fur. “Let’s just call you Xiao Xiao.”
Lin Sifei’s eyes widened. She looked up at Luo Ke’s smiling face, her own cheeks turning slightly red. Who are you calling Xiao Xiao? Annoying.
