A Kiss Will Turn You Human
Don’t look!
The cat’s eyes had natural eyeliner at the corners, like little hooks. The crown on her head was too big, tilting slightly to one side.
The photographer snapped several shots in a row and smiled in satisfaction. “This one is perfect. The aura is very powerful; it’s perfect for the cover.”
Luo Ke snapped back to reality and nodded at him. “Is the shoot over?”
Before the photographer could speak, the boss rushed over, waving his hands. “No, no, there’s one more set.”
“So many?” Luo Ke frowned, looking at Lin Sifei with concern. The flash had been going off nonstop; wouldn’t her eyes be uncomfortable?
“Feature stories are always like this. We still have to select the photos in post-production,” the boss said with a smile, his eyes darting to the safe nearby. There was still so much jewelry left to shoot.
Luo Ke frowned. She walked over, picked Lin Sifei up, nuzzled her head, and asked in a low voice, “Are you tired? Do your eyes hurt?”
Lin Sifei gently shook her head, let out a “meow,” and nuzzled her back.
The stylist was pulled aside by the boss for a chat. When she returned, she looked apprehensive.
“Um… President Luo, the photos just now came out exceptionally well, so I wanted to ask… would you mind if we put clothes on the cat for some pictures?”
“Do you have any clothes?”
“There’s a pet store right next door. Our boss can go buy some right now.”
Luo Ke looked down at the cat on her lap. Lin Sifei was resting with her eyes closed. Upon hearing this, she tapped her paw twice.
Luo Ke nodded at the stylist.
Lin Sifei lay there resting, imagining the look on Yan Yafei’s face when she saw the magazine. Hahahahaha, this is so damn satisfying.
Not only did I snatch the cover, I also got a huge feature story.
Suddenly, she opened her eyes, remembering her Weibo account.
She patted Luo Ke, pointed to the phone, opened the camera app, and struck a pose.
Luo Ke scratched her ears helplessly. “More pictures? Haven’t you had enough yet?”
Lin Sifei rolled her eyes. She doesn’t get it. This is for the business!1 I have to let my fans know I’m a model cat now. When the magazine comes out, this will help attract a new wave of followers.
She directed Luo Ke, making sure she included the equipment on the set behind her in the shot.
The equipment is in the shot because I don’t want to reveal which magazine this is for yet. Magazines usually like to keep things confidential. I respect the rules; it’ll lead to better working relationships in the future.
After taking the photos, Lin Sifei picked two good ones and directed Luo Ke to add a filter. I’m so good-looking, I don’t need to be ‘shopped at all.
Luo Ke scrolled through the dozens of filters on her phone, her expression gradually turning green. “This is such a pain.”
Lin Sifei patted her shoulder soothingly. What’s the big deal? Back in the day, if I wanted to post a selfie, it had to go through layers of company approval. It would take at least an hour to get it out.
After choosing for what felt like an eternity, Luo Ke’s vision started to blur; everything looked the same. Lin Sifei finally took over and picked a “little fresh”2 style that made her look meng meng da.3 It would create a nice contrast with the cover.
Comments started appearing the moment it was posted. Lin Sifei watched with satisfaction, but since there were people all around, she didn’t reply.
With her fan engagement done, the stylist walked over with the clothes.
“I think we can dress the cat to look more dashing, with a stronger, trendier fashion sense.”
She picked up a pair of scissors and began modifying the clothes on the spot.
Lin Sifei put on the shredded strips of cloth the stylist had fashioned and sighed helplessly. Sure enough, no matter what world you’re in, stylists love their shredded cloth.
She returned to her spot in front of the camera looking like a big sister gang leader4. She hooked a ring with her paw and tossed it into the air, her eyelids half-lowered, the corners of her mouth turned down—the very picture of an world-weary face.5
The smile on the nearby boss’s face gradually vanished, replaced by a furrowed brow. He looked at Luo Ke. “President Luo, this cat of yours was born to eat from this bowl of rice6. In the circle right now, very few can match her gaze and her aura.”
He paused for a moment. “I almost forgot—you couldn’t have taught her all these poses, could you? You have a good eye.”
Luo Ke watched the cat in front of the camera, the corners of her lips curling up slightly. It seems I’ve raised quite a treasure.
The stylist changed the set, replacing a cool model sports car with a wicker chair and table, upon which sat a vase filled with fresh flowers.
Luo Ke watched as Lin Sifei, a single cat, played three different roles: the husband, the wife, and the child.
A wedding ceremony in a suit and a wedding gown. Amid a sky full of falling petals, the tomcat and the queen cat raise the rings in their paws and gaze into each other’s eyes.
Of course, this would require post-production compositing. On set, it was just Lin Sifei, a lone cat, staring intently into thin air.
The stylist clapped happily. “All that’s left is the child’s part!”
Lin Sifei wasn’t a kitten, but she knew how to act cute. The stylist swapped the ring for a bracelet and laid out enormous flowers and petals in the background. The contrast would make the cat appear very small.
Lin Sifei held a ring with one paw, a cute smile on her face, as if she were embracing her own parents.
Luo Ke watched her, a little dazed. She averted her gaze, as if she were seeing a reflection of her past self—a happy family. But alas…
She watched the cat run toward her, took a deep breath, and forced a smile back onto her face as she bent down to scoop her into her arms.
“How was it?”
“Meow~” Lin Sifei typed with a smile, 【It was awesome. Just you wait, you’ll be hiring me as your brand ambassador in the future.】
Luo Ke raised an eyebrow slightly and booped her on the nose. “You worked hard today. I’m taking you out for a feast. That place has plenty of things cats can eat.”
The memory of the sashimi she’d eaten before flashed through Lin Sifei’s mind. 【Is it even tastier than that sashimi?】
“Of course. And there’s a much wider selection.”
Lin Sifei couldn’t help but gulp, draping herself over Luo Ke’s shoulder and nuzzling her face in anticipation.
In the restaurant, Yan Yafei touched up her makeup, then walked contentedly toward a nearby booth.
When she saw Yuan Mo, she pressed her palms together apologetically. “I’m late! I’m so sorry!”
Yuan Mo smiled and waved it off. “No, I was early. Please, sit.”
Yan Yafei sat down and glanced at her wristwatch. “You’re right. We’re actually ten minutes early.”
“What would you like to eat? You order.” Yuan Mo handed her the menu.
“Oh, no, no.” She pushed it back, leaning forward and whispering, “I’ve never been to such a fancy restaurant before, so I don’t know what’s good. You should order.”
“Alright.” Yuan Mo took the menu back. “Our tastes are similar anyway. I’m sure you’ll like whatever I order.”
Yan Yafei gave a shy smile.
When the food arrived, every dish was indeed delicious, though the portions were quite small.
Yan Yafei rubbed her stomach and wrinkled her nose. “Good thing I’m eating with you. If anyone else saw me with this many plates piled up, it’d be all over the gossip sites tomorrow.”
“What’s wrong with that? My mom always says that to be able to eat is a blessing7. It’s a good thing.” Yuan Mo ordered another beef tenderloin. “By the way, how are things going for you at the entertainment company?”
“It’s… okay.” Yan Yafei’s voice trailed off, and her smile couldn’t hold. She lowered her head and quietly ate from her bowl.
It was obvious she’d been wronged. Yuan Mo frowned. “Who bullied you? Tell me, and I’ll stick up for you.”
“No one bullied me.” Yan Yafei forced a smile. “Besides, I have to rely on my own hard work. Otherwise, people will start gossiping about you.”
“Do you think I’m afraid of their gossip? I’m your friend. There’s nothing wrong with coming to me to vent a little.”
Yan Yafei’s fingers toyed with her chopsticks. After a moment, she set them down with a sharp tap. “Okay, fine, I’ll tell you.”
Yuan Mo nodded encouragingly.
“It’s not really a big deal… You know that magazine cover I was shooting? Well, we’d already finished the shoot. But then my agent told me I was replaced.”
“Replaced even after you’d already shot it?” Yuan Mo frowned. It seemed the other party must have a powerful backer. But who would be so bored as to deliberately oppose him?
“I’ll call and ask for you.”
Yan Yafei quickly waved her hands. “You said you wouldn’t interfere.”
“I’m not interfering, I’m just asking. Don’t you want to know who did it?”
Yan Yafei lowered her head and mumbled, “I’ll find out when the magazine comes out anyway.”
Yuan Mo was amused by her display of being wronged yet stubborn. He had already dialed the number.
“Hello, President Yuan.” The magazine’s boss wiped his forehead, guessing he was calling to hold him accountable.
Sure enough, the first thing Yuan Mo asked was who had replaced Yan Yafei.
“It wasn’t a person. It was a cat. President Luo of Luo Family Group’s cat.”
“Huh?” Yuan Mo was stunned. He hadn’t expected this to be Luo Ke’s doing. “What magazine is her cat getting on?”
The boss had his excuse ready. “I looked into it. President Luo set up a dedicated social media account for her cat. It seems she wants to build it into an internet celebrity cat. This issue is also a collaboration with Luo Family’s own jewelry brand. They’re likely using the cat’s image to appeal to female consumers.”
“Then why this specific issue? Didn’t you tell her it was already booked?”
“Well, the next issue also features a jeweler, and they’ve been booked for a long time. It’s fashion week season right now, so jewelry is selling like hotcakes. President Luo probably didn’t want to share an issue with another brand.”
Yuan Mo took a deep breath. “I understand.”
Hanging up, Yuan Mo smiled at Yan Yafei. “Luo Ke wants to make her cat famous, so she urgently took this issue. It probably wasn’t a deliberate move against you.”
Yan Yafei’s hand, hidden under the table, clenched into a tight fist. Isn’t this Yuan Mo supposed to be powerful? Why is he so afraid of Luo Family?
She dug her nails into her palm, using the pain to force herself to remain calm. She smiled and said, “I used to work at Luo Family, but just how powerful are they? Are they really that formidable?”
“Of course they are.” Yuan Mo let out a soft laugh. “Luo Ke herself is like a computer; she can accurately judge the profitability of every single contract. She’s usually cold-faced, too. Speaking of which, I never would have guessed she’d raise a cat. I’ve collaborated with her many times. A while back, I was planning to build a shopping mall, and it’s thanks to her that I didn’t have to compete for the land. Otherwise, my costs would have multiplied. She gave me face8, so I won’t oppose her.”
What a nice way of saying you’re scared. Yan Yafei rolled her eyes internally, but her face remained cheerful. “My work performance before was a total mess. I think I might have offended President Luo. Do you think she holds a grudge against me?”
“She’s always strictly professional. Now that you’ve resigned, you two have no reason to interact.” Yuan Mo smiled, stroking his chin. “Since this modeling shoot fell through, why don’t you just enter the entertainment circle? It’s much more stable than magazine shoots.”
Yan Yafei’s eyes lit up, but she still feigned distress. “My looks are just average, and I’ve never had any training. How could I possibly get in?”
Yuan Mo gave an enigmatic smile and said nothing more.
Seeing his expression, Yan Yafei knew she had him. She happily placed a piece of beef on his plate.
Her eyes shifted, and she sighed. “I just hope President Luo doesn’t decide to push her cat into the entertainment circle, too.”
“That’s not a given.” Hearing a familiar voice, Yan Yafei’s eyes widened in astonishment as she turned her head toward Luo Ke.
Luo Ke walked toward Yuan Mo, extending a hand to shake his. “I didn’t expect to run into President Yuan here.”
“President Luo, you’re dining here as well?”
Luo Ke nodded, then gently took Lin Sifei’s paw and made it wave at him. Yuan Mo flinched back reflexively; their last encounter had left quite an impression.
He laughed awkwardly, glanced at Yan Yafei, and in a flash of inspiration, changed the subject. “What did you mean just now by ‘not a given,’ President Luo? Surely this cat isn’t going to enter the entertainment circle?”
“There are plenty of films with animal protagonists.”
Yuan Mo nodded with a smile. “That’s true. But they’re few and far between, and they don’t really create any conflict for human actors.”
Luo Ke glanced at Yan Yafei, then suddenly asked Yuan Mo, “How is your Ragdoll cat?”
“He’s doing great. I recently found him a beautiful Ragdoll for a blind date. He’s over at her house playing today, in fact.”
Yan Yafei finally found an opening to speak, her eyes wide with feigned surprise. “You have a cat, Yuan Mo? What does it look like? Is it cute?”
At the mention of his cat, Yuan Mo smiled a bit sheepishly. He took out his phone and opened his photo album. “Here, let me show you a picture. He’s incredibly cute and very clingy.”
Lin Sifei watched his cat slave9 antics with disgust, lifting her head disdainfully. She looked at Luo Ke, feeling even more satisfied. As expected of my shit-shoveling officer10, she has a real presence, none of this pathetic groveling.
Yan Yafei looked at the photo, cupping her face in her hands. “Oh, he’s so cute!”
“Isn’t he?” Yuan Mo smiled, taking his phone back. “I’ll bring him out to play with you next time.”
“I’d rather you didn’t,” Luo Ke cut in. “After all, Miss Yan has a history of cat abuse.”
The color drained from Yan Yafei’s face, which quickly crumpled into a tearful expression. “Zong… President Luo, I already told you, it wasn’t on purpose! I didn’t know cats couldn’t eat chocolate!”
Yuan Mo’s expression flickered. He tried to smooth things over with a smile. “It’s not like Yafei meant for it to happen. It’s perfectly normal for someone who doesn’t own a cat not to know that.”
Luo Ke gave him a cool glance. “As long as you’re aware, President Yuan. We’ll be heading to our table now.”
“You won’t join us?” President Yuan gestured to their table.
“No, thank you. I’ve booked a private room.”
President Yuan held up his hands. “Alright then. Next time we meet, my treat.”
Luo Ke gave a slight nod, shot a glance at Yan Yafei, and left with the cat in her arms.
Yan Yafei was so angry she gripped the tablecloth, her gaze toward Yuan Mo slowly filling with discontent.
I thought this Yuan Mo was rich, that he could compete with Luo Family. I can’t believe Luo Ke can afford a private room while he can only eat in the main hall. Unbelievable!
I, Yan Yafei, will absolutely not be second best to anyone.
Meanwhile, Yuan Mo—who had specifically booked the main hall out of consideration for her, worried she might feel uncomfortable in the close quarters of a private room—foolishly continued to place more food on her plate.
A smile touched Yan Yafei’s lips as she lowered her eyes. It seemed she would have to enter the entertainment circle as soon as possible. That was where the real money was.
Luo Ke carried the cat into the private room and took out the cat bowl as usual. While she knew Lin Sifei probably wouldn’t mind using their bowls, the restaurant might not appreciate a cat using the human dinnerware.
“Please knock before entering with the food.”
“Of course, ma’am.” The server placed the first round of dishes on the table and left.
Luo Ke smiled and placed her on the tabletop. “See anything you like? Pick for yourself.”
Lin Sifei pointed to a plate of fruit and opened her mouth wide.
Luo Ke chuckled and placed a piece of fruit in her bowl.
Lin Sifei nibbled at it, her paw tapping on the screen. “This is good. You should have some, too.”
Luo Ke smiled, and the two of them—one person, one cat—happily dug into their feast.
Being a cat, Lin Sifei’s appetite was much smaller. She was full after just a few bites and flopped onto the table.
She resumed typing. 【I’m so happy I got to see Yan Yafei get put in her place!】
“You really don’t like her, do you?”
Lin Sifei lifted her chin. 【Of course not. After all, she didn’t just feed me chocolate, she also pulled my tail.】
Luo Ke’s expression shifted. “She abused you more than once?”
【It’s fine. She only pulled it that one time. After that, I just made sure to avoid her.】 Fearing she would worry, Lin Sifei typed quickly to show she hadn’t been seriously abused.
“My cat has to avoid her?” Luo Ke snorted. “A person like that has no business being in the entertainment circle.”
Lin Sifei’s eyes widened. Although she also wanted Yan Yafei out of the picture, Yuan Mo was backing her now. Targeting her would inevitably create bad blood with Yuan-shi.
She explained this to Luo Ke, who didn’t seem particularly concerned. “Yuan Mo isn’t that foolish. He wouldn’t harm the interests of Yuan-shi for a single person.”
Lin Sifei slapped a paw to her forehead. Luo Ke is thinking logically, like a normal person. But in this book, the male supporting lead is supposed to support the female lead unconditionally!
【Maybe he’ll have a brain fart. Leave it to me. I’ll find some dirt on her.】
Luo Ke pulled her into her lap and pinched her ear. “Rely on you? What can one little kitty possibly do?”
She deliberately lowered her head, intending to nuzzle her forehead.
Annoyed at being underestimated, Lin Sifei tilted her head up to retort.
As luck would have it, their lips met.
Lin Sifei’s eyes flew wide open, her cat ears heating up instantly.
With a “poof,” Luo Ke felt a sudden weight on her thighs. A stark naked woman was sitting on her lap.
One of Lin Sifei’s arms was hooked around her neck as she stared at her in shock.
Luo Ke was stunned for a second but quickly composed herself. She pinched the woman’s earlobe. “No cat ears or tail this time.”
“IS THAT THE POINT?!” Lin Sifei’s face was beet red.
Luo Ke’s gaze traveled down from her face. Hmm, the point is indeed…
Smack! Lin Sifei slapped a hand over her eyes, her voice trembling with obvious, intense embarrassment. “Have some decency, President Luo.”
Hearing the title, the tips of Luo Ke’s ears turned slightly red, and her throat felt a little dry. “I…”
Knock, knock, knock. A knock sounded at the door of the private room. The intercom next to it automatically switched on. “Hello, Ms. Luo. The Coke and Pet Coke you ordered have arrived.”
Lin Sifei wrapped her arms around herself, staring at the door in terror.
Luo Ke turned her head and gave a dry cough, a hint of a smile playing on her lips. “That position… doesn’t seem to be covering much.”
Lin Sifei gritted her teeth. “If you keep enjoying my misfortune11, I’ll rip your clothes off and wear them myself!”
