I Will Protect You
The cat has grabbed a handle on them.1
The gossipy Eldest Aunt2 left, and the old madam3 sat smiling on the sofa, extending a hand toward Luo Ke. “Here, let me hold this cat.”
All the fur on Lin Sifei’s body stood on end. If she fell into those hands, how could she possibly survive?
She raised her head and looked at Luo Ke with her big, watery eyes, meowing pitifully. “Meeeow~”
Luo Ke’s expression wavered for an instant, and a sliver of hope ignited in Lin Sifei’s heart. But then she was plucked from Luo Ke’s arm and plopped onto Old Madam Luo’s lap.
Lin Sifei stared at Luo Ke in disbelief. Seeing Luo Ke’s reassuring gaze, Lin Sifei felt the urge to cry, but no tears came.
Old Madam Luo stroked her back, which, in Lin Sifei’s eyes, felt like sandpaper grinding against her body with every pass.
Old Madam Luo’s cat-petting technique was not the least bit gentle; she nearly pulled out a tuft of fur. She flipped Lin Sifei over and patted her on the head.
“This cat looks just like one of those earth cat4 they raise in the countryside.”
Luo Ke stood to the side. “A friend gave her to me. They said she’s an American Shorthair5, but I’m not sure. As long as having a cat makes you happy, though, the breed doesn’t really matter to me.”
“You have a point. As long as you like her, that’s what matters.” She gave the cat a couple more pats before handing her back to Luo Ke. “Your Second Aunt6 will be here soon, and then we can eat. You must be hungry.”
“I’m okay.”
Luo Bihua happened to be coming downstairs and pursed her lips when she heard this. “Second Sister is really something else. The whole family is supposed to be eating together, and she’s still this late.”
The old madam’s face also showed a clear hint of displeasure. Noticing this, Luo Bihua’s smile widened.
She sidled up to Luo Ke. “Here, Xiao Ke, this is a necklace your Eldest Aunt bought for you. Top-grade jadeite and rubies.”
Luo Ke accepted the jewelry box and gave a slight nod. “Thank you, Eldest Aunt.”
“Open it and have a look.”
Luo Ke lifted the lid. Lin Sifei, curious, stood on the back of the sofa to peek, and instantly had black lines all over her head7. What top-grade jadeite and rubies? The jadeite was clearly a low-quality piece. The surrounding rubies weren’t impure, but they were too pure—probably industrially synthesized.
She rolled her eyes and glared at Luo Bihua. This woman must be doing this on purpose.
Luo Ke looked at the gift in her hands and quietly accepted it8. “It’s beautiful. I like it a lot.”
“As long as you like it. The necklace you gave me for my birthday last time was lovely, so I made a point of buying a necklace for you, too. Isn’t this kind of give-and-take what makes our family so harmonious?” She grinned and patted Luo Ke’s shoulder.
Hearing this, Lin Sifei’s eyes spat fire. Luo Ke would never give someone a low-quality item. This woman was deliberately passing off shoddy goods to rip Luo Ke off.
Her claws dug several holes into the sofa. She tried hard to tell herself to endure it, to not scratch anyone, or else she would truly leave behind mouth and tongue9.
Just as she was taking a deep breath, voices came from the doorway. A middle-aged woman walked in, followed by a man as thin as a hemp stalk. This must be Luo Ke’s Second Aunt and Second Uncle10.
Sure enough, Luo Ke bowed to greet them.
As soon as Second Aunt entered, she took off her hat and her eyes immediately fell on the jewelry box in Luo Ke’s hands. Her gaze sharpened. “What’s that you’re holding, Xiao Ke?”
Luo Ke held up the box. “It’s a necklace from Eldest Aunt.”
“Oh, a gift from Eldest Sister.” Her interest instantly vanished. She walked smilingly to the old madam’s side and began kneading her shoulders. “Mom, I’m late. The traffic on the way here was terrible.”
The old madam’s expression softened. “It’s fine. As long as you’re here. Let’s eat.”
Luo Ke put the box away and went to sit at the dining table. With a kick of her legs, Lin Sifei leaped onto her lap.
Luo Bihua’s eyebrows shot up. “How can that cat be at the table? Isn’t it dirty?”
Lin Sifei shot her a glance, jumped straight down, and darted under the dining table. Luo Ke bent down worriedly to look at her. Lin Sifei’s heart softened. She walked over to Luo Ke’s leg, rubbed against it, and did a cute little roll on the floor.
Seeing that she seemed quite happy, Luo Ke smiled and mouthed the words: I’ll buy you yummy treats when we get back.
Lin Sifei wagged her tail, and the last of her anger dissipated.
She watched the group’s legs from under the table, lying bored on the floor and identifying each pair of legs by memory.
These belong to Eldest Aunt and her husband, these are Second Aunt and her… huh?
Lin Sifei shot to her feet, staring at a leg in a red high heel that was repeatedly hooking the calf of the man next to it. The high heel belonged to Second Aunt; the leg belonged to Eldest Aunt’s husband.
Afraid she had seen wrong, Lin Sifei crawled out from under the table for a look, and once she was certain, she crawled back under. She covered her mouth, worried she might laugh out loud.
Hahahahaha, I’ve discovered a huge secret. Hmph, you people. Go on and bully Luo Ke now.
Lin Sifei wagged her tail back and forth, narrowing her eyes as she sized up the two pairs of legs that were already secretly crossing to Chencang11. Now, how to expose this?
Lin Sifei still hadn’t come up with a plan by the time lunch ended. Her eyes kept darting between the two of them, searching for an opportunity.
Sure enough, after a little while, Second Aunt, Luo Chunhai, found an excuse to go upstairs to rest. Eldest Aunt’s husband chatted for a bit longer before his phone started ringing nonstop.
He picked it up for a look and smiled apologetically. “Something came up at the school that I need to handle.”
“Are you leaving?” Luo Bihua asked, a bit reluctant to see him go.
“I brought my laptop. I’ll just go upstairs and take care of it.”
The old madam nodded. “Go on, then.”
He grabbed his laptop bag and hurried upstairs.
Luo Bihua shook her head helplessly. “That man. He’s still so reckless.”
“It’s good to have drive,” the old madam said with a smile, nodding in satisfaction.
Lin Sifei glanced at them, crept over to the staircase, and had just started up the steps when an auntie12 stopped her. “Hey, you can’t go up there.”
The woman reached out and picked her up.
The old madam frowned. “Don’t let her go upstairs. It’ll be a pain to clean up all the fur.”
Luo Ke held out her hands to Lin Sifei, but she refused to go. She had business to attend to.
She wriggled in the auntie’s arms, and the moment she was set down, she leaped onto the windowsill and shot outside.
Eldest Aunt shot a disgusted look in her direction. “A bit feral. Just ignore it.”
Luo Ke looked out worriedly and was about to go find her when Eldest Aunt grabbed her hand. “How’s the company been lately, Xiao Ke?”
“It’s fine.”
Lin Sifei darted outside and circled the villa, looking for security cameras. The surveillance was tight all around, with almost no blind spots. She pursed her lips.
Circling around to the back, her eyes lit up when she saw the climbing vines covering the wall.
Cats are excellent climbers, especially when it’s only to the second floor. All of Lin Sifei’s training finally had a place to be put to use. She scrambled up in just a few moves and slipped inside.
There wasn’t a single person on the second floor. No wonder they dared to carry on their affair so brazenly.
Lin Sifei hugged the wall. A moment later, she saw a door open a crack. Luo Chunhai extended a hand, and then a man ran in from the study.
While the two were getting intimate, Lin Sifei squeezed in by Eldest Aunt’s husband’s feet. With a click, the door was locked.
“Huh? I think I just kicked something.”
“There’s nothing there. You’re just teasing me.”
“But don’t you like it when I tease you?”
Lin Sifei hid under a cabinet. Once the two were lying on the bed, she crawled out and rummaged through their things. Sure enough, she found… four cell phones.
Lin Sifei: ……
Two of them had fingerprint locks, and the other two had no password lock at all.
Lin Sifei thought for a moment, then tapped open one of the phones and dialed a number.
Soon, one of the password-protected phones began to ring.
Eldest Aunt’s husband picked up his phone and unlocked it. “Hm? Why is your phone calling me?”
Luo Chunhai wrapped her arms around his neck. “You must have bumped it while taking off your clothes. Hurry up, we don’t have much time, mmm~”
Lin Sifei watched him toss the phone aside, then quickly scurried over and pressed the screen. As expected, it hadn’t gone dark.
She bared her teeth in a grin and quickly pulled up the chat history. She wouldn’t have known if she hadn’t looked, but one glance gave her a shock. Besides Luo Chunhai, there were tons of flirtatious13 messages.
Lin Sifei exported everything, packaged it into an email to her tablet’s inbox, and then cleared the history.
She put the phone back, circled around to the window, wrapped herself in the curtains, and jumped onto the adjacent drainpipe to slide down. The security cameras shouldn’t be able to capture anything now.
She smiled, her eyes crinkling, and ran from the main entrance back into the living room. Seeing Luo Ke sitting there, meek and submissive, she clenched her paws.
She would protect Luo Ke!
