Find the Culprit
Come to the office tomorrow.
Lin Sifei swallowed. Calm down, calm down, calm down! Can’t get my fur in a bunch!
She tried to hypnotize herself, smoothing down her own cat fur. Just as she’d first planned, she sat crouched on the floor, hiding the chocolate between her front and back paws where her fur could cover it perfectly.
Lin Sifei’s eyes darted around, trying to find the person who had thrown the chocolate.
How vicious. Chocolate can kill cats. The person had even deliberately wrapped it in dried squid shreds—that proved it was intentional. They were afraid she wouldn’t eat it.
Soon, a few more pieces of the dried squid shreds rolled over, but they came from different directions. It seemed the culprit was constantly moving to avoid being discovered. Plus, with so many people around, some of the squid balls were getting kicked away.
Lin Sifei squinted and scanned the area. She figured it would be too hard to find the culprit herself, so she settled down securely on the floor to wait for Luo Ke to come down.
After finishing the prize drawing, Luo Ke said a few words of encouragement at the host’s request, gave a slight nod, and walked off the stage.
“Meow~” Lin Sifei looked up and called out to her.
Luo Ke bent down, reaching out to pick her up, but before she could even touch her, Lin Sifei shrank back, pulling her neck in.
Luo Ke’s eyebrow twitched as she looked at her, puzzled. Lin Sifei meowed again.
Seeing her sitting firmly on her bottom without moving, Luo Ke could only kneel on one knee and hold out a hand to her. “What’s wrong?”
Lin Sifei lifted a paw, pressed it onto the back of her hand, and guided her hand down to where she was sitting.
Luo Ke followed her lead, and her fingers touched something warm, soft, and round. She froze for a moment, staring into Lin Sifei’s eyes. Lin Sifei’s expression was grave as she gave her a slight nod.
“Did you make a poop?”
Lin Sifei: ???!!!
“Mee-YOWL!” she shrieked, swatting a paw at Luo Ke’s face. You’re the one who pooped! You’re the one who pooped in public! Your whole brain is full of poop!
Lin Sifei’s paws moved so fast they left afterimages. Luo Ke quickly surrendered, dodging backward. “My bad, my bad.”
Lin Sifei gave a cold huff and turned her head away.
Luo Ke picked up the object and breathed a sigh of relief. “To be honest, I was still a little worried. Good thing it’s not.”
Lin Sifei’s head snapped back to glare at her, and she lifted a paw threateningly.
Teasing a cat was just too much fun; Luo Ke couldn’t help but laugh. She scooped the cat up with one arm and opened her other hand to see what the sticky thing was.
This was…
She froze on the spot. Although it had been warmed and melted by Lin Sifei’s body heat, she could still make out that it was chocolate and dried squid shreds. A faint smell of chocolate even hung in the air.
She quickly put the cat down on a table and pinched her mouth. “You didn’t eat any, did you!”
Seeing how anxious she was, an idea suddenly flashed in Lin Sifei’s mind. She lifted her paws and pushed at the hand pinching her face, as if she were just a kitten who didn’t like being held. But in reality, her paw quickly brushed against the corner of her mouth, where there was still some residue left from when she’d pawed at the chocolate earlier.
“Don’t mess around, let me see.” Luo Ke’s brow was tightly furrowed.
Lin Sifei rubbed it a few more times to make sure it was smeared on, then pretended to be held down, tilting her chin up.
Luo Ke saw the brown smear under her mouth, and her pupils contracted. She snatched the cat up and started dialing the vet as she walked.
“Hello, Doctor Li? My cat might have eaten some chocolate.”
“Chocolate! How much did she eat?!”
Luo Ke’s hand was a sticky mess. She opened her mouth. “I… I don’t know.”
“How could you be so careless? How long ago did she eat it? Get her to the hospital, now.”
“I don’t know how long ago she ate it, but it was less than half an hour ago. She isn’t showing any reaction right now.”
“Symptoms usually don’t appear for three hours. You’d better hurry over.”
Luo Ke clutched her phone, her walk turning into a run. Special Assistant Lin had just won a prize and was in high spirits, but when he saw his boss in such a panic, he thoughtfully hurried over to help.
“President Luo, what’s happened? Why the rush?”
“Someone fed Xiao Xiao chocolate.”
Special Assistant Lin froze for a second, the smile vanishing from his face. “In that case, President Luo, you should go to the hospital first. I’ll go check the security footage.”
Luo Ke nodded, placing the completely melted chocolate into a napkin and handing it to him. “There’s definitely more of it around Xiao Xiao’s spot. Find it.”
“Okay.”
Before Lin Sifei could even process what was happening, Luo Ke was already rushing into the underground garage with her. She saw that Luo Ke’s hands, gripping the steering wheel, were trembling slightly, her knuckles white from the force of her grip.
She couldn’t bear it anymore. Seeing Luo Ke in such a state of panic, she regretted tricking her. “Meow~”
She cried out, even clapping her paws and rolling around playfully, trying to show that she was fine.
“Don’t move.” Luo Ke reached out one hand to hold her still while keeping the other on the steering wheel.
Fortunately, the veterinary hospital wasn’t far. They got green lights at both intersections on the way and arrived quickly.
Doctor Li was waiting at the door. When he saw her, he quickly waved her over. “Over here, over here.”
Luo Ke ran over and handed the cat to him. Doctor Li moved swiftly, immediately prying open her mouth to check her teeth and so on.
“Hmm?” He frowned. “Let’s do a more detailed examination.”
The two humans quickly reached an agreement, and Lin Sifei was held down like a useless cat for all sorts of tests.
After the examination, Doctor Li pushed up his glasses. “It looks like she didn’t eat any chocolate.”
“But on her mouth…”
“She probably just got some on her, but didn’t ingest it.”
Luo Ke finally let out a breath of relief. “Let’s have her stay here for observation, just in case.”
Doctor Li nodded. “To be safe, I’ll have the nurse prepare for a stomach pump.”
A sto-stomach pump??? Lin Sifei grew even more terrified. For the next three hours, she made a point of spinning and leaping about to prove there was nothing wrong with her health.
Luo Ke took a wet wipe and cleaned the chocolate smudge off her fur, then wrinkled her nose in distaste. “I’m giving you a bath when we get back. You’re filthy.”
Having been scorned, Lin Sifei let out a little whimper. Then, remembering how she had scared Luo Ke, she obediently curled up on her lap.
Once she was sure Lin Sifei was fine, Luo Ke took her and headed back.
The party at the restaurant was starting to wrap up, and some employees had already gone home. But Luo Ke wasn’t worried. To avoid suspicion, the person who had tried to harm the cat would definitely not be the first to leave. They would have a guilty conscience.
Just as she walked in, Special Assistant Lin came up to meet her. “President Luo, we’ve pulled up the security footage. Zhao Min is watching it, but it seems…”
Luo Ke raised a hand to cut him off. “Let’s talk over there.”
In the security room, not only was Zhao Min present, but the restaurant manager was as well. After all, when a customer suddenly demands to see the security footage and says something has happened, they get worried too.
“Hello, President Luo.”
Luo Ke nodded to the restaurant manager. “No need to be nervous, the cat is fine. I’m only looking at the footage to find out who did this.”
“Ah, yes, of course.” The manager was so nervous that beads of sweat appeared on his nose.
Luo Ke walked to the screen and asked Zhao Min, “Have you found them?”
“It was during the prize drawing, so the crowd was too dense. The cameras are all positioned from above, so they didn’t capture who threw it.”
“Play it again for me.”
The security guard immediately clicked on the video. The progress bar moved forward bit by bit until it reached the moment Special Assistant Lin went on stage. On the screen, the cat’s head suddenly moved, and then it quickly pounced on something.
“Play that part again.”
This time, she wasn’t watching the cat, but the surrounding crowd. After the first piece of chocolate fell to the floor, who moved…?
“That person.” She pointed to a woman in a white dress on the screen. “Can you get a clearer view of who that is?”
“We can check the entrance footage based on her clothes,” the manager immediately offered, patting the security guard’s shoulder.
Soon, they had identified the person: Yan Yafei.
The footage from the entrance clearly captured her clothes—an identical dress.
Luo Ke tapped the desk, the sound seeming to strike at the hearts of everyone present. No one dared to speak.
“What a kind girl,” Luo Ke said, pressing her temples as she reached out to pick up Lin Sifei.
She looked at the restaurant manager. “Can I take a copy of this recording?”
“Well… I’m sorry, but this involves privacy issues. Letting you see it is already…”
Luo Ke nodded. She understood these things; it was just a casual question. She didn’t need this video to deal with Yan Yafei.
She turned and walked out, with Special Assistant Lin and Zhao Min hurrying to follow.
“Zhao Min, go find Yan Yafei and tell her to come to my office at ten tomorrow morning.”
“Right now?”
“Now.” Luo Ke walked into the main hall and immediately spotted Yan Yafei sitting in a booth, laughing and joking with a group of girls.
She narrowed her eyes. “Say it in front of everyone.”
“Understood, President Luo.”
Special Assistant Lin watched her go. “President Luo, you’re not going to deal with her now?”
“Did you see it?”
Special Assistant Lin looked puzzled. See what?
Luo Ke gently stroked the cat. “Yan Yafei has a guilty conscience. If I fire her now, all I can do is fire her. There’s no point in that. The time before the sentence is passed is the most painful.”
