I’ll Raise My Own Cat
Lin Sifei’s sorrow and guilt didn’t last long. As the saying goes, behind every bear child1 is a bear parent2.
Luo Ke perfectly held herself to the standard of a bear parent. Unable to stand seeing her little cat frightened and worried, she brought out a pile of snacks and held her for a long round of comforting.
Lin Sifei had no outlet for her guilt and could only go back to eating and drinking.
Perhaps from the double shock, Yan Yafei was much more subdued now. Lin Sifei watched her several times but couldn’t dig up any valuable dirt on her. She started to get anxious.
This female lead was going to enter the entertainment industry later on and would definitely break her contract with the Luo Group. She couldn’t remember the specific details, only that the contract termination was a very ugly affair. Yan Yafei’s fans boycotted them relentlessly, causing the Luo Group huge losses.
Thinking of this, she felt a little like laughing. In the book, the Yan Yafei of that time was just a starlet who had become an instant hit right after her debut. Even with a boycott, the Luo Group had so many subsidiaries. How could mere fans possibly have created such a massive effect?
But according to the book’s setting, where the entertainment industry was supreme and all of humanity were stans, Lin Sifei really didn’t know if the world would restore that plot point. She didn’t dare gamble with Luo Ke’s future.
As things stood, it was best to fire the female lead before she was discovered by a talent scout. She’d already offended her, and there was no hiding from it now, so she might as well face her head-on3. She had to minimize any opportunities for the female lead to cause trouble.
She spent her days darting about, staring at the female lead. Every day, whenever the female lead looked up, she would see a pair of cat’s eyes watching her. With the incident of the video recording last time, Yan Yafei was genuinely traumatized. She was on edge every day, and after a few days, she finally couldn’t take it anymore.
Luo Ke’s office once again welcomed that Second Uncle. Curled up on the desk, Lin Sifei saw this Director Luo walk in with a smile. She turned her head away—what the eye doesn’t see is clean4.
“What brings Second Uncle here today?”
Luo Shengping5 smiled and pointed at Lin Sifei on the desk. “Xiao Ke, look at this thing of yours. Isn’t it a bit inappropriate to bring a cat to work? And then there was that whole video incident before. It has a bad influence.”
“What’s bad about it?” Luo Ke said, stroking Lin Sifei’s back. “Petting a cat can relieve stress. The employees at the company are under a lot of pressure, too. Letting Xiaoxiao wander around can also improve their mood, and their work efficiency will go up.”
“What good is that little bit of efficiency? The time they spend playing with the cat would be more efficiently used for work.”
Luo Ke leaned back in her chair. “Then what is it that Second Uncle wants?”
“You should leave the cat at home. Hire a nanny.” He paused, then changed his tune. “Ah, you don’t like live-in nannies. Then sending her to your grandmother’s would also work. What does it look like, bringing her to the company?”
Luo Ke’s expression darkened a little. “I’ll raise my own cat. She hasn’t had any negative impact at the company, so I don’t see a problem.”
“Why are you so disobedient, child?”
“I’m not a child anymore,” Luo Ke said, leaning forward. “I am the President, Second Uncle.”
The muscles on Luo Shengping’s face twitched twice before he forced a smile. “Xiao Ke, Second Uncle doesn’t mean anything else. Back when your father…”
Luo Ke slammed her hand on the desk. He flinched, his eyes widening as he stared at her.
Luo Ke let out a breath and lowered her head. “Second Uncle, there’s nothing to discuss on this matter. I will be responsible for my cat. There is no problem with keeping her at the company.”
She raised her eyes to look at him, her expression returning to one like an old well without ripples6, but her voice was frigid.
“Second Uncle, there are some things you shouldn’t stick your hand so far into.”
Luo Shengping’s hand, clutching the front of his suit jacket, tightened. He managed a smile. “Second Uncle was just discussing it with you. If you like having her here, then let her stay.”
Luo Ke slowly leaned back into her chair as well. “Then I thank Second Uncle for his consideration.”
Watching Luo Shengping walk out, Lin Sifei shot up and leaped onto Luo Ke’s lap, rubbing against her happily.
She actually knows how to stand up for me. Looks like this shit-shoveling official7 is becoming more and more qualified.
The rubbing tickled Luo Ke’s waist, and she couldn’t help but laugh.
Lin Sifei curled up in her arms, her eyes narrowing again. That Luo Shengping was so close with the female lead; he was probably called here by her this time.
Hmph, the female lead wanted her gone, and she wanted the female lead gone. They would just have to rely on their own abilities and see who was the first to go.
Lin Sifei’s tail swayed back and forth. A light suddenly flashed before her eyes. Looking up, she saw Luo Ke hiding her phone.
She jumped up and batted the phone down. That must have been the flash. She opened the photo album and, sure enough, saw it was filled with pictures, all of her—lying down, sleeping, all sorts of poses.
She gave Luo Ke a sidelong glance. So this is the kind of President you are. Saying you don’t like taking pictures, but your phone is full of secretly taken photos of your cat.
Having her photos discovered, Luo Ke was a little embarrassed and raised a hand to touch her nose. She reached out, picked up the cat, and rubbed her head. “Alright, just give me a break.”
Lin Sifei huffed twice, looking at her teasingly. Seeing the tips of Luo Ke’s ears turn slightly red, she opened her mouth and grinned.
Luo Ke reached out and pinched her mouth shut. “Too ugly. Don’t smile with your mouth open.”
She called me ugly! Lin Sifei’s eyes went wide, and she raised a paw to hit her.
Luo Ke caught her arm and held it helplessly. “Your leg should be pretty much healed. I’ll take you to the pet hospital to have a look in a couple of days.”
Lin Sifei had gotten used to walking on three legs. Now that there was sudden talk of removing the cast, she was a bit stunned.
Not two days later, Luo Ke took her to the pet hospital. After an examination, the doctor removed her cast.
Lin Sifei stood on the table, tentatively putting that foot down and starting to walk with a limp.
Luo Ke’s face scrunched up as she looked at the doctor. “Why is she still limping?”
Hearing this slander, Lin Sifei turned her head and let out a “meow-rowr” at the doctor, telling her off.
The doctor laughed helplessly. “It’s nothing. She’s just not used to it after not walking on it for so long. Let her get adjusted.”
Hearing this, Lin Sifei looked down at her own foot, stomped it firmly, then tensed all four paws and leaped up forcefully. When she landed, that front leg instinctively drew up. Her center of gravity was unstable, and she started to tumble headfirst.
“Meow?” She hadn’t even processed it.
Luo Ke lunged forward and grabbed her.
Lin Sifei rolled into her arms, and it was only then that she belatedly felt a sense of fear8. She clutched at Luo Ke’s clothes, letting out low “mew, mews.”
“You’re already being reckless the moment the cast is off.” Luo Ke tapped her on the forehead, her expression turning serious. “Cherish yourself a little, you hear?”
Lin Sifei had been scolded, but she knew Luo Ke was just concerned for her. She obediently flopped over in her arms and rubbed her head against Luo Ke’s palm.
Luo Ke sighed helplessly and poked her on the forehead.
