Holding Favor, Acting Spoiled1
Forgot who’s raising you?
Back in the office, Luo Ke had just sat down when Zhao Min came in to report.
“President Luo, Director Luo wants to see you.”
Luo Ke’s brow furrowed slightly. She nodded. “Let him in.”
Lin Sifei looked at Luo Ke strangely, wondering why she had such a troubled expression. It’s a rare sight on her face. Is this director a tough nut to crack?
Lin Sifei’s mind played out a thrilling, high-stakes corporate drama, only to see a middle-aged man with a goofy grin and a beer belly walk in.
Lin Sifei: …I can guarantee, based on all the executives I’ve seen in my years in the entertainment industry, that this man is no big shot.
“Second Uncle2, you’re here.”
Lin Sifei shot up from the desk. Second Uncle!!!
Her eyes widened in shock. If she remembered the original book correctly, these relatives had done quite a bit to get the villain killed. Or rather, they were the ones who caused all the trouble in the first place.
“Second Uncle, have a seat. What can I do for you?” Luo Ke poured him a cup of tea.
The Director Luo let out a theatrical “Aiyo.” “Xiao Ke, what are you saying? Can’t your Second Uncle come see you if there’s nothing going on?”
“Of course you can.” Luo Ke folded her hands on the desk. “But it’s working hours right now. It’s better if we stick to business.”
Her expression was serious, and Director Luo shifted awkwardly in his chair. “Since you put it that way, let’s talk business. I heard you’re going to fire Yan Yafei.”
Lin Sifei rolled her eyes from the side. I’d say that’s clearly what you came here to talk about from the very beginning.
“What are your thoughts, Second Uncle?”
Hearing this, Director Luo knew there was still room for discussion. He smiled and shifted his butt. “She’s a newcomer, she’s bound to make mistakes. Give her another chance. Besides, she’s on very good terms with that Yuan Mo. We need to win over the Yuan Corporation, too.”
Luo Ke’s fingers traced the surface of the desk, her eyes darkening slightly. “This Yan Yafei—she’s quite well-connected. She even knows someone at Yuan.”
“It’s mainly because she’s a very kind and innocent person. People like that naturally attract other outstanding people.” Director Luo watched her expression. “This… this should be a small matter. You wouldn’t refuse to give your Second Uncle some face, would you?”
“You’re joking, Second Uncle. She’s just one employee. If you want her to stay, then she can stay.” Luo Ke picked up her teacup and took a sip. “However, letting her off without any punishment wouldn’t be right, either. Let’s just dock her one month’s salary. For the next month, she can start over and retrain with the interns.”
“A month?” Director Luo frowned. “Isn’t that a bit too long?”
“Then one week it is. Second Uncle came all this way in person, after all.” Luo Ke placed the teacup down in front of him.
Director Luo looked at her hand, knowing the matter was settled. He let out a couple of loud laughs. “Then it’s decided.”
He stood up, straightened his suit, and walked out.
The moment he left, Lin Sifei ran over to Luo Ke, staring at her accusingly. How could you not fire her? That Second Uncle of yours is no good, either.
Luo Ke smiled, picked her up, and placed her on her lap.
She struggled, trying to get away, but Luo Ke wouldn’t let go. Sensing the cat was genuinely angry, she gently stroked her back.
“Alright, stop throwing a tantrum. Second Uncle has done me favors in the past. Since he brought a small matter like this to me directly, I can’t just refuse him.”
Lin Sifei hated that iron couldn’t become steel3. That Second Uncle of yours has ulterior motives! He only relies on you because he’s incompetent himself. He’ll be the first one to sell you out in the future.
She was furious that she wasn’t human, otherwise she’d just say she could see the future and tell her everything. Not that Luo Ke would necessarily believe me, anyway. One is the Second Uncle who’s been by her side since childhood, the other is a person of unknown origin.
Lin Sifei felt a bit deflated, sensing that the path ahead was fraught with difficulties.
Luo Ke petted her as she leaned back in her chair, narrowing her eyes slightly. “But this Yan Yafei is rather interesting. Not only does she know the president of Yuan Corporation, but she can also get Second Uncle to speak up for her.”
Lin Sifei anxiously patted her hand. Yes, yes! Your Second Uncle and Yuan Corporation are a wolf and a bei colluding4! Though, not yet…
Luo Ke closed her eyes to rest, her thoughts unreadable.
“President Luo, HR is asking if they still need to process the termination paperwork.”
Luo Ke’s eyes snapped open. “The termination paperwork hasn’t been processed yet?”
Zhao Min flinched under her gaze. “I-I’ll go urge them to hurry.”
“No need.” Luo Ke looked away. “Yan Yafei is to be docked one month’s salary and transferred to intern status for one week. No termination.”
Zhao Min acknowledged the order and carefully closed the door.
Luo Ke looked down at Lin Sifei. “Xiao Xiao, I originally thought Yan Yafei went to Second Uncle to plead her case, but now it seems that’s not it. HR hasn’t even sent out the notice yet. How did Second Uncle know?”
Lin Sifei looked up at her, her eyes shining. “Meow!” You finally figured it out?
Luo Ke took a deep breath and pressed the button on her desk phone. “Zhao Min, have Yan Yafei come to my office.”
“Right away, President Luo.”
Soon, the office door was pushed open. The moment Yan Yafei entered, she bowed deeply. “I’m very sorry, President Luo.”
Lin Sifei saw her and let out a “Meow,” then flicked her tail and went to curl up in her bed, refusing to look at her.
Luo Ke caught her reaction and smiled faintly.
Seeing that tiny smile, Yan Yafei froze in place.
Luo Ke looked at her, the smile instantly vanishing as she reverted to the cold President Luo. “Have you received the notice from HR?”
“I just received it,” Yan Yafei said, her head lowered.
“Do you know Director Luo Shengping?”
“I do.”
“How do you know him?”
Yan Yafei raised her eyes, carefully studying her. Meeting Luo Ke’s gaze, her head shot down again. “When I first came to the company to apply, I thought he was just a regular employee and helped him carry some things.”
Luo Ke nodded slightly. “No wonder Second Uncle said you were kind.”
Yan Yafei smiled, embarrassed.
“You can go back now. Work hard.”
“Yes, President Luo.”
Watching the woman leave, Luo Ke took a sip of tea. “It seems Second Uncle told her quite a bit. For someone like her to be close with Yuan Corporation…”
Her fingers tapped against the desk, making a dull tap, tap, tap.
Lin Sifei meowed, looking up at her.
“Are you worried?” Luo Ke bent down, picked her up, and booped her on the nose. “This is all small stuff.”
“Meeow~” Such an egomaniac.
Seeing her roll her eyes, Luo Ke abruptly buried her face in the cat’s belly and nuzzled vigorously.
Lin Sifei let out a “MROW!” Her fur stood on end as her paws frantically clawed at Luo Ke’s hair. Where do you think you’re nuzzling! You shameless hussy!
Luo Ke’s hair was a complete mess from the scratching. She had no choice but to ask Zhao Min for a comb and mirror to fix it.
Lin Sifei snorted coldly, flashing her claws and waving them as a warning not to try that again.
Luo Ke tapped her on the forehead with the comb, exasperated. “Did you forget who’s raising you?”
Lin Sifei lifted her chin. So what? You’d throw me out? You wouldn’t have the heart.
Brazen because she was doted upon. That was her, all right.
Lin Sifei happily turned her butt towards Luo Ke and leaped onto the opposite desk.
She opened the tablet and started playing a muted game of Xiaoxiaole5.
“Bzzzzzz—”
Lin Sifei’s ears twitched. She couldn’t help but turn her head toward the source of the sound. A giant bee was hovering in front of her face, buzzing as it dragged its stinger.
Lin Sifei was silent for three seconds, then let out a piercing “Meow!” and bolted.
The bee, seemingly startled by her movement, gave chase, continuing to buzz right behind her.
The only thing in Lin Sifei’s cat-like eyes was Luo Ke sitting at her desk. She scrambled up Luo Ke’s pant leg and scurried to perch on top of her head.
Luo Ke’s freshly pinned-up hair was once again a mess. Lin Sifei, having forgotten all her earlier arrogance, was meowing for help.
Luo Ke looked at the bee circling around and listened to the nearly deafening cat shrieks by her ear, and couldn’t help but laugh out loud.
Lin Sifei was on the verge of tears. Stop laughing and get rid of the bee!
“Have you learned your lesson? Do you know who’s raising you now?”
“Meeow~ Meeow~” I know, I know! It’s you, it’s you, it’s still you!
Lin Sifei lowered her head, whimpering meekly by Luo Ke’s ear, her cool little nose pressing against her cheek.
Only then did Luo Ke smile and stand up, using a folder to slowly herd the bee out the window.
Lin Sifei’s tense body finally relaxed, and she went limp in her arms like a puddle.
A smile appeared on Luo Ke’s face as she stroked her chin. “You little troublemaker.”
