Purpose
The stairwell was at the very bottom of the entire staircase, like a small, open room; the lighting was average.
Bai Xin leaned sideways against the white wall; just moments ago, an acquaintance had been at the door, blocking her path to leave.
She couldn’t go to another exit and had no choice but to temporarily duck in here.
Her body temperature was too high; it felt as if even the wall was becoming scalding hot.
Bai Xin’s breathing was slightly heavy, her slender fingers gripping an inhibitor; she was forcefully suppressing the urge to tremble, her other hand reaching to uncap the syringe.
Her pheromones hadn’t started leaking out yet, but the symptoms of her heat period were already obvious; her strength was fading faster than she had imagined.
Due to her weakness, the inhibitor slipped from her hand and clattered onto the tile floor.
The physical and mental agitation caused her temperature to rise further; sweat beaded on her temples.
She bent down; her form-fitting long dress, combined with her physical discomfort, made the movement difficult.
She took a deep breath, and just as her fingertips were about to touch the inhibitor, the door to the stairwell was suddenly pushed open…
Bai Xin’s nerves tensed, her movement froze, and the bead of sweat on her forehead dripped down.
“Bai Xin?”
It was Cheng Jiqing’s voice.
Her voice was deeper than usual; perhaps because of this, Bai Xin unexpectedly felt a sense of security from it.
She hadn’t expected Cheng Jiqing would actually notice something was wrong with her, nor had she expected Cheng Jiqing would come looking for her, and so quickly, too…
Just before receiving the call, she had clearly become wary of Cheng Jiqing again—this person, on one hand playing games with her, while on the other forcing Qin Yufu into an engagement, making her act as an escort—how could she possibly be anything good?
But on the phone, amidst the surrounding noise, she had heard the woman’s urgent questioning.
Cheng Jiqing heard a slight noise and walked further inside in a few steps.
Bai Xin was squatting on the floor. Her high-slit long dress had slightly parted due to her posture; one hand braced on the tiles, her whole figure concealed in the interplay of light and shadow.
Vulnerable, fragile, yet dangerous.
“What’s wrong with you?”
Cheng Jiqing walked over. Her clothes were also tight, so she could only half-squat down.
She grabbed Bai Xin’s arms with both hands to help her up. Upon contact, Cheng Jiqing noticed the person beneath her palms was trembling. She asked in a breathy whisper, “Didn’t your heat period already pass?”
Bai Xin herself didn’t know why either.
“Did you bring an inhibitor?”
Bai Xin averted her gaze from Cheng Jiqing’s face, her voice unsteady: “On the floor.”
Cheng Jiqing steadied her. “Stand steady, be careful not to fall.”
After saying this, she released her hands and picked up the unopened inhibitor from the floor.
Bai Xin watched Cheng Jiqing’s actions, the emotion deep in her eyes unreadable.
Cheng Jiqing quickly handed the inhibitor back over. “You can inject it yourself, right?”
Bai Xin lowered her eyes and took the inhibitor, murmuring a low affirmation. If she didn’t inject it soon, her pheromones would start leaking from her glands.
Actually… when Cheng Jiqing had touched her just now, she had already felt a reaction.
Through the door, one could still faintly hear the liveliness of the reception1. The stairwell, spanning over ten floors, was relatively quiet, but someone could come down at any moment.
The sense of tension rose and fell with the decibel level from outside, fluctuating constantly.
Bai Xin didn’t answer Cheng Jiqing’s question.
Cheng Jiqing also noticed that Bai Xin seemed somewhat cold towards her.
Cheng Jiqing couldn’t help but snark2, “You promised to have a better attitude. We haven’t seen each other for a few days, and the ‘deal’ is already off?”
“Cheng Jiqing.”
Cheng Jiqing raised her eyes, meeting Bai Xin’s gaze3, and heard Bai Xin ask her, her voice hoarse yet devoid of emotion: “I really can’t figure you out. Why don’t you just tell me your objective directly.”
Cheng Jiqing froze for a moment.
She did have the objective of saving her own life, of wanting to live freely in the future.
But Bai Xin’s words were too chilling. It wasn’t enough to break her heart, but it still made her chest tighten somewhat.
If Bai Xin had always had this attitude, she wouldn’t have felt much; what she didn’t understand was the reason for the sudden change.
This woman was truly fickle.
Cheng Jiqing gave a short laugh. “Miss Bai, what objective do you think I have?”
Cheng Jiqing’s shadow, elongated by the light behind her, pressed onto Bai Xin’s shadow. Her features had a sense of depth, her figure was elegant, and the Buddhist prayer beads lent her an ascetic air; yet her voice, contrary to expectation, was gentle.
However, even so, Bai Xin could still sense a trace of displeasure from Cheng Jiqing.
The vibration of her phone drew Cheng Jiqing’s gaze away; she lowered her head.
It was a message from Yu Lan.
【Zeng Lu is looking for you.】
Now was definitely not the time to run into Zeng Lu. Cheng Jiqing paused silently for a moment. When she looked up again, she happened to see the scene of Bai Xin preparing to inject the inhibitor—
The omega tilted her head, slender fingers brushing aside her tea-black4 long hair, revealing a snow-white swan neck5. With each breath, the hollows around her collarbones deepened and shallow.
The long, thin, gleaming needle tip trembled precariously as it approached the pale white neck…
Cheng Jiqing’s eyes suddenly felt as if burned; she immediately averted her gaze.
Just then.
‘Screech—’
It was the sound of the door.
Cheng Jiqing’s heart leaped violently; she subconsciously moved to block Bai Xin.
Although there was only a three-centimeter6 height difference between them, Bai Xin still felt as if Cheng Jiqing was like a great tree enveloping her at this moment… The scent of peach blossom wine… it had been so long.
Such a thought uncontrollably surfaced in Bai Xin’s mind.
Suddenly, her glands flared with heat, and she couldn’t stay standing.
Cheng Jiqing quickly grabbed Bai Xin’s elbow, her other arm wrapping around her waist, steadying her in her embrace.
“F%ck, someone’s here.”
They heard a woman’s voice: “Ah, it’s nothing, just some people fooling around7 in the stairwell. Hold on, let me find a quiet place.”
Cheng Jiqing: “…”
Bai Xin: “…”
Apparently, the person had only come in to make a phone call. They were in the inner corner; unless she walked further in, she wouldn’t have seen them.
But Cheng Jiqing hadn’t known that just now and had shielded her anyway. This made Bai Xin find her even harder to fathom.
Once the door closed again.
Cheng Jiqing let out a breath and lowered her eyes.
The pressure of her hold increased as Bai Xin’s strength waned… For a moment, she wasn’t sure if she should let go.
“We need to get out of here quickly.”
Cheng Jiqing suddenly recalled Bai Xin’s inexplicable attitude today. Persistently trying to unilaterally build goodwill was indeed inappropriate; the other person already thought she had ulterior motives.
She looked down and asked, “Do you need my help, Miss Bai?”
Bai Xin needed it.
When necessary, she never hesitated to use her acting skills. Appropriately showing weakness could often protect her and allow her to find opportunities.
But at this moment, when Cheng Jiqing asked this question kindly, strangely, she didn’t want to.
She knew this might be dangerous, but she said it anyway.
She said, “No need.”
Cheng Jiqing was both exasperated and amused.
She’s already in this state, what would it hurt to say something pleasant?
She can put on an act in front of others, so what’s wrong with pretending just a little bit in front of her? Can’t she even manage that little bit?
If she dislikes me this much, why send me that kind of text message?
Cheng Jiqing felt indignant, very indignant.
“Then I’ll leave, alright?” she asked deliberately.
Bai Xin didn’t speak, perhaps afraid she wouldn’t be able to hide the state of her voice if she opened her mouth.
The person in her arms couldn’t even stop trembling. Cheng Jiqing held back her own impatience, slowly asking again: “You’re trembling like this. Really, are you sure you don’t want my help?”
The moment she finished speaking, she released one hand.
Bai Xin’s expression changed. Lacking support, she instantly started to slide down.
Cheng Jiqing didn’t actually let her fall; the very next second after letting go, she caught her again.
The sharp pain where her shoulder was grabbed made her briefly furrow her brow—it was Bai Xin who had instinctively grabbed her shoulder just now…
Looking at Bai Xin’s state, Cheng Jiqing sighed inwardly, took the inhibitor directly from Bai Xin’s hand, held the omega’s shoulders, and turned her towards the wall. “Hold onto the wall steady, I’ll inject it for you, don’t move.”
Regarding this inhibitor business, she also had no experience; she had only seen how to inject one on TV.
But her tone had already softened.
Bai Xin probably also knew she couldn’t delay any longer, so she let her.
Bai Xin leaned limply against the wall. Cheng Jiqing stood behind her, her posture making it look like she was pinning the other woman against the wall.
She took the inhibitor and searched for the gland on Bai Xin’s neck.
Finding the spot, she aimed the needle.
“Hiss— You, push slower.” Both hot and cold sweat broke out on Bai Xin.
That sound was like an alley cat, momentarily shedding its fierceness to let out a delicate, weak meow.
She hadn’t done it on purpose; she carefully slowed down.
Cheng Jiqing’s heart softened. Her tone returned to its gentleness as she said in a low voice, “If you had just been a bit more obedient earlier, wouldn’t it have been fine…”
The author has something to say:
Cheng 18 in the moment: Not obedient! Making me have to be the 1 for a moment!
Cheng 1 afterwards: Acted too rashly, now I still have to coax her myself.
