The Matter of Being Pregnant 4
Something More Precious
Cheng Jiqing walked slowly toward her along the path of roses and gently pulled the other woman into her arms, hearing Bai Xin say, “You cheated.”
Cheng Jiqing let out a low laugh. “I did not. Even if I did, you were the one who cheated first.”
She asked, Weren’t you planning to give me a surprise?
Bai Xin’s hand balled into a fist and tapped Cheng Jiqing’s waist without a word. But her features, pressed against Cheng Jiqing’s shoulder, relaxed and opened up.
Like a lily in full, brilliant bloom.
“When did you find out?” Bai Xin remembered something and asked, “Did you see it that day?”
Cheng Jiqing smiled and said, “I didn’t get a very clear look, but it was enough.”
After the livestream that night, Cheng Jiqing had actually caught a vague glimpse of Bai Xin’s phone screen, which hadn’t been turned off.
It was blurry, but she was certain it was the screen showing the end of the livestream.
After a moment’s thought, guessing who ‘Cheng Xin Cheng Yi’ was became a matter of course.
But her attention and suspicion toward this ID hadn’t just started that day.
Cheng Jiqing said, “Miss Bai, I’m not a fool.”
With an ID like that, and with such close attention paid to her, how could she possibly not notice at all?
It was only that blurry glance after the livestream that night that made her instantly certain.
When she first saw this ID, she mostly found it familiar and special.
That character for ‘heart’—every time she read it, she would involuntarily think of Bai Xin’s name.
When you love someone, everything you see, feel, and hear transforms into their shadow.
Seeing the stars, you will think of them.
Feeling your heartbeat, you will also think of them.
Hearing anything related to them, even if it’s just a homophone, you will think of them…
Bai Xin let out a light huff. So you figured it out and set a trap for me.
After hearing this, Cheng Jiqing said, “That’s right.”
She turned her face to kiss Bai Xin’s cheek, her lips dry and warm. She said softly, “And didn’t the clever Miss Bai walk right into it?”
Bai Xin: “After all, I’m not as clever as Little CEO Cheng.”
The teasing in this statement was heavy.
Cheng Jiqing laughed softly and pulled back slightly, but her hand remained on Bai Xin’s back. Her expression was endlessly serious. “It’s not that I’m clever, it’s because that person is you.”
The time they had been in love, the time she had loved Bai Xin, was enough to let her understand her wife.
And because of that, even without seeing the screen clearly, she could confirm from the subtle clues that the person was Bai Xin.
She went to take Bai Xin’s hand.
The rose petals rustled gently with their steps.
She led Bai Xin to the chair and helped her sit.
She embraced her from the side.
She reached out, picked up a carefully selected rose from the table, and held it before Bai Xin’s eyes. “Wife, it’s been hard on you being pregnant.”
Bai Xin’s eyelashes fluttered. She stared at the red rose, which was so vibrant it still seemed to hold moisture. It must have been freshly delivered; the trimmed end of its deep green stem was still fresh.
Even though her heart was experiencing a long, lingering aftershock, she didn’t take it.
Bai Xin huffed, “Cheng Jiqing, you think you can just fob me off with a single rose?”
In front of Cheng Jiqing, she could be as willful as she pleased.
Tang Jia had once said that she was being arrogant because she was doted on.
Cheng Jiqing had later retorted—I’m the one who dotes on her.
Especially after getting pregnant, she sometimes couldn’t help but want to lose her temper—you can’t do this, you have to be careful about that, you have to take medicine to regulate your body.
What frustrated her the most was that she couldn’t be overly intimate with Cheng Jiqing.
To put it shamelessly, given her constitution and Cheng Jiqing’s attraction to her, achieving this was difficult to begin with.
But Cheng Jiqing was always patient. Even when she lost her temper for no reason, Cheng Jiqing would coax her. Once she calmed down, she would talk to her properly and reason with her.
After getting pregnant, she had become particularly susceptible to this kind of treatment.
After she spoke, Cheng Jiqing brought the rose closer, its dewy petals brushing lightly across her lips, as if teasing her.
She was about to kiss that cool, pure moisture.
Cheng Jiqing bent her waist lower.
The woman’s fragrance was rich and dense, her warm breath like a heated ocean wave. “Then how about I fob you off with a lifetime?”
The rose lifted her chin, ‘forcing’ her to look at Cheng Jiqing.
The next second, a kiss landed.
When the kiss ended, Bai Xin’s wrist felt slightly cool. She lowered her head. The white jade bodhi beads had already turned a pale yellow; it was an object Cheng Jiqing had worn for a very long time.
At this moment, Cheng Jiqing had put it on her hand…
It wasn’t particularly valuable, but to her, it was exceptionally precious.
Cheng Jiqing began to speak of the bracelet’s true origin.
It was on a snowy day.
During a very difficult period in her life, the director of the orphanage who had raised her had just passed away from an illness, and she could see no hope in life.
She was completely lost.
When people are in despair, they will always develop some kind of faith.
They always hope for miracles, hope that heaven can truly hear their heart’s voice, hope that their life can be a little better.
Not so cruel.
By a stroke of fate, she went to a temple.
She donated all the money she had on her to the merit box1.
She faced the Buddha statue and kowtowed three resounding times.
She said—I’m begging you, please let me be a little happier. I want to live a good life, too.
She walked out of the main hall, and the wind and snow rushed to meet her. Before she could dodge, it blurred her vision.
The snow melted on her face, like tears.
As she was walking down the steps, a master called out to her and gave her these white jade bodhi beads.
He said, Your sincerity will protect you.
Cheng Jiqing didn’t mention the matter of the director, only telling the latter half of the story.
She had mentioned similar things before, and it always made Bai Xin uneasy. It was unclear whether she believed it or not.
But from then on, she never brought up that pale, empty past again.
Cheng Jiqing caressed the white jade bodhi beads on Bai Xin’s wrist and said gently, “I think my sincerity received a response, and so—you came.”
Bai Xin gazed at Cheng Jiqing’s earnest expression.
Hearing that utterly devout tone, the tip of her nose felt a little sour.
She suddenly remembered the jade bracelet her mother had left for her.
She remembered what her mother had once said—If this bracelet is still here after I die, I’ll leave it for you. If the bracelet is gone, there will still be other things left for you. It’s also possible that one day, someone else will give you something even more precious.
Bai Xin’s warm palm covered Cheng Jiqing’s hand.
Yes.
Now, someone has given me something more precious.
That night.
Bai Xin asked Cheng Jiqing that question again: “Cheng Jiqing, will you always be with me?”
Cheng Jiqing asked her back: “Have I ever lied to you?”
Bai Xin shook her head.
Cheng Jiqing then went back to answer the first question—
Don’t be uneasy. I will always be with you, and I will always love you.
I have never lied to you, therefore this promise will always hold true.
