Body Scent.
The bedroom door was opened, then quickly shut again.
Yu Luo leaned her back against the door, her chest heaving rapidly.
The lights in the room were off, with only the faint moonlight filtering into the interior, its glow brushing across her eyes. The window was open, and the cool night breeze drifted in, gently caressing her hair and skin. The bedroom’s aromatherapy silently diffused its light fragrance everywhere, entwining with her sense of smell.
This sensation, where all her senses were faintly stimulated, caused a trace of elation to rise uncontrollably in Yu Luo’s heart.
——The corners of her lips curled up slightly.
“I’m still eagerly trying to grow up for you.”
The young woman’s clear, mellow voice still seemed to linger by her ear. A sincere and earnest clumsiness, an irrepressible longing, a veiled yet solemn promise.
If… if she hadn’t misunderstood…
A sudden knock on the bedroom door interrupted Yu Luo from her soft, cottony thoughts, making her heart skip a beat in shock.
She steadied her breathing before turning to open the door, her face a picture of cool composure. “What is it?”
Qi Song paused for a moment, looking at the pitch-black darkness behind the woman, and asked in surprise, “Jiejie, you suddenly ran back to your room just now, why didn’t you turn on the light?”
She knew that Yu Luo had always been afraid of the dark.
Yu Luo’s eyelashes trembled slightly; only now did she notice the darkness surrounding her.
She felt a little embarrassed, but she feigned ignorance of Qi Song’s emphasis on her “sudden escape,” saying with an air of breezy nonchalance, “I was just about to.”
With that, she reached out, found the switch, and pressed it.
The bright, clean light dispelled the night that had been brewing between them. In an instant, they could both clearly see the bashful flush on each other’s faces.
“…”
The air fell into a brief silence.
Two sets of feelings hung in the air, floating and swaying lightly like pink bubbles, gazing at each other with delight.
Yet they didn’t dare to get too close, worried that after a collision, that fragile thing would inadvertently burst, spilling out the gap between their ages and life stages.
Even Yu Luo, who was already successful in her career and accustomed to grand occasions, felt somewhat at a loss in the face of this raw and splendid feeling.
She finally decided to use her “older sister” tone to say something like “rest early, study hard” to let the floating emotions settle for a while, but then she saw the girl before her, tall and standing like jade1, suddenly speak:
“I miss you.”
The words Yu Luo was about to say were blocked by this unexpectedly bold declaration, leaving her momentarily speechless.
She could feel herself growing flustered, as if worried that Qi Song would prematurely reveal content that should have been a matter of hearts reflecting without words; and on the other hand, her chest burned hot from those three words, an unavoidable reaction.
Qi Song continued, enunciating each word seriously, “Jiejie, you said just now that you felt my actions these past few days seemed like I didn’t miss you at all, that I didn’t want to hang out with you…”
“That’s not it at all.”
The gift she hadn’t been able to give when she returned in the evening was now finally presented before Yu Luo’s eyes.
“I was preparing this.” Qi Song extended her hand, palm up. A delicate little gift box lay inside.
She smiled gently at Yu Luo, her beautiful eyes like a pool of clear spring water, filled with a kind of joyful anticipation. “Jiejie, open it and see.”
Yu Luo’s heart trembled.
She took it. As she unwrapped the gift box, her fingers felt strangely clumsy, and even their tips turned red.
Inside was a small, porcelain-white jade jar of excellent quality, warm and smooth to the touch. It was surrounded by a faint, extremely pleasant fragrance.
Connecting this to the different “perfume scents” that had been appearing on Qi Song recently, Yu Luo’s heart stirred. She instantly realized what this was.
She gently lifted the lid of the jade jar and saw the pale green, translucent balm inside.
As she brought it closer to her nose to take a light sniff, the faint fragrance became rich and full-bodied.
It was like being illuminated by a clear, serene, and bright ray of moonlight on a quiet winter’s night, melting her into a handful of snow.
…She should have been happy. Qi Song had given her such a beautiful scent.
But in this exceedingly cold, clear, and sacred fragrance, Yu Luo’s nose couldn’t help but sting, and a sense of wretchedness and shame welled up in her heart.
After she presented, in all those experiences of being despised, bullied, or pitied with condescension because of her pheromone scent, she had involuntarily become sensitive and fragile when it came to fragrances.
She naturally guessed what her own scent was like now. Rotten? Filthy? Lewd?
Just how inferior did it have to be for everyone to avoid her like a snake or scorpion2.
After so many years of contemplation and gradual resignation, Yu Luo found it difficult to associate herself with the word “fragrant” ever again.
Even when her whole body emanated the fresh scent of shower gel after a bath, she knew it was just an olfactory illusion—if she could smell her own pheromones, she would know that no matter how fragrant the shower gel, once the repulsive scent of her pheromones was mixed in, it could easily destroy all sense of beauty.
And the balm Qi Song had prepared was the same.
It was just that because Qi Song couldn’t smell pheromones, they would both be deceived together.
Therefore, when she saw the young woman looking at her with sparkling eyes, asking, “Jiejie, do you think it smells good?”
Yu Luo’s throat ached with a raw pain. She couldn’t give an answer for a moment, her emotions already trembling.
She lowered her head slightly to hold back the stinging sensation, wanting to use her consummate acting skills to give Qi Song the best possible feedback for her gift, but then she heard Qi Song’s next sentence: “This is your scent.”
Yu Luo was stunned, her entire body stiffening.
As if aware of Yu Luo’s astonishment, Qi Song reiterated, “This is the fragrance that belongs exclusively to you.”
“From the first time we hugged… Jiejie, I smelled your scent on your neck. It has nothing to do with pheromones, nothing to do with the secretions and release from your glands, because I can’t perceive any of that. It’s just the most primal, most real scent, the one that flows in every inch of your skin and pulses in your veins. It’s faint and subtle, and it was—and can only be—captured by me, an ordinary person.”
“On this point alone, I am grateful to be an ordinary person.”
After the gender evolution of human society developed into the ABO model, it became superficial and label-driven. A pheromone scent was crudely summarized by a single noun and then permanently bound to a person. The mutual attraction and compatibility of pheromones determined all passion and dictated the selection criteria for one’s ultimate life partner.
Thus, many primal concepts were gradually forgotten in this “evolution,” such as natural body scent. When one was releasing large amounts of pheromones to entice or suppress another, who could possibly notice the extremely faint, fleeting body scent on each other’s necks, which was completely overwhelmed by the rich pheromone aroma?
The gaze Qi Song directed at her held a tenderness as deep and vast as the sea. “I’ve told you several times that you smell wonderful, but you always thought it was a white lie I told to comfort you.”
Because of the lingering pain in her heart, she would even stiffen up whenever Qi Song said such things, so Qi Song didn’t dare to bring it up easily again.
“So I wanted you to be able to truly experience it,” Qi Song said. “I’ve been searching for the most suitable perfumer, and I’ve been learning perfumery myself…”
It was easy to pick a fragrance one liked, but it was extremely difficult to imitate and create a specific scent one had smelled before.
For this, Qi Song had spent nearly two years. From the winter of her first year of high school—the day Yu Luo confessed her past and they had their first hug—to now, at the transition from autumn to winter in her third year.
She searched, revised, and adjusted again and again, finally finding the scent that was the closest match. So, this holiday, she couldn’t wait to complete it and give it to Yu Luo.
“Moreover, the scent of this balm is long-lasting and stable. If you apply it to your glands, others will think it’s your pheromone scent,” Qi Song said. “Didn’t you say people are always curious why your pheromones are scentless…”
In the next second, Qi Song’s words came to an abrupt halt.
——The woman had suddenly taken a step forward and buried her head in the crook of her shoulder, her body trembling slightly.
The tears fell without a sound, yet they were so torrential that they soaked her collar in an instant.
This was the second time Qi Song had seen Yu Luo cry.
Before she could figure out the reason, an intense ache filled her heart.
She was just about to hug the person tightly and comfort her when Yu Luo slowly pulled away from her embrace. She took hold of her arm and wiped her tears, bit by bit, on her sleeve.
“You’re so troublesome,” the woman chided in a small voice, her cool, clear tone slightly hoarse from crying.
Although she was clearly being “scolded,” Qi Song couldn’t help but smile.
“I like it when Jiejie scolds me like this,” Qi Song said. “It makes it seem like you don’t know what to do with me, like you’re spoiling me.”
“…”
Yu Luo was speechless for a moment. The tips of her thick, tear-soaked eyelashes glistened under the light.
After a short while, she looked up and said softly, “You’re the one spoiling me, Qi Song.”
“So much so that this is the first time I’ve ever cried from feeling too happy.”
This time, it was Qi Song’s turn to be at a loss.
Amidst a sense of joy and bittersweetness that had nowhere to go, her chest began to rise and fall a little more heavily. The composure she had while calmly explaining the thought behind her gift was instantly gone, leaving only a profound feeling of happiness born from Yu Luo’s own happiness.
The woman before her clearly had red eyes and a red nose from crying, like a pitiful little rabbit. Yet, for some reason, she put on a brave face, quickly trying to regain her composure. Then, she tilted her head back slightly, revealing her beautiful, slender neck, and said with perfect calm, “Help me apply a little…”
“Oh, oh, okay.”
Under the emotional waves surging in her heart, Qi Song was temporarily unable to think and could only obediently follow Yu Luo’s words.
She looked at the clear balm in her palm, and for some reason, the words the perfumery owner had said before she left tonight suddenly echoed in her mind——
The ingredients in this balm are all-natural; it’s completely edible.
In a daze, Qi Song looked at the alluring flush at the corners of the woman’s eyes, and at that stretch of neck, as white as jade…
As if sent by spirits and dispatched by ghosts3, she gently applied the balm from her fingertip to her own lips.
Then she leaned in, her breath trembling, and pressed her lips to the pulse on the side of Yu Luo’s neck.
Beneath the delicate skin, the warm beat was full of life, but what was even more full of life was…
The neck was a fragile, sensitive area. A whimper, extremely unfamiliar and humid to them both, unintentionally escaped Yu Luo’s throat.
A serene and elegant fragrance wafted between the two, along with their excessively turbulent heartbeats.
Yu Luo struggled to suppress her panting, raising a hand to push away the person who had suddenly started making trouble. But Qi Song was faster than her, abruptly springing away like a startled fawn, her face filled with belated shock and embarrassment. A pale pink color spread from the girl’s cheeks all the way to her ears, which finally burned completely red.
“…”
Faced with Qi Song’s even more inexperienced reaction, Yu Luo was suddenly at a loss for words.
Her heart pounded against her chest, spreading heat throughout her body. She bit her red lips until they hurt slightly, ultimately unable to say anything to reprimand her.
In the end, she could only raise her hand and mess up Qi Song’s hair a few times. “Could you please be a little better behaved, you underage kid.”
Qi Song, knowing she was in the wrong, muttered, “I’ll be an adult soon,” while letting Yu Luo mete out her punishment.
The meaning in these words was all too clear, and the two of them were standing too close.
As the head-rubbing gradually stopped, the air grew quiet, and the deep night naturally squeezed its way in.
The atmosphere was stirred into a thick consistency by the night, and a certain indescribable humidity brewed between their intertwined breaths.
Finally, Yu Luo couldn’t bear it anymore and decided to see her performance through to the end.
A hazy mist formed in her eyes. “You should go get some rest. Jiejie drank too much tonight, so my mind is a bit muddled——”
This sentence could perfectly explain why she had let out such an unbearable whimper when her neck was kissed, and it could also explain why she was so eager to flee from the current cloying atmosphere.
But she saw the look in the young woman’s eyes before her become somewhat meaningful.
“I’ve been wanting to ask, Jiejie, what does baijiu taste like? Is the flavor strong?” Qi Song asked curiously.
“…Strong.” Yu Luo felt that something was off about her tone, but she couldn’t quite put her finger on it.
“Is it sweet?”
Thinking of that bottle of Wangzai Milk, Yu Luo said, “Sweet.”
“Does it have a milky fragrance?”
“…” The mist in Yu Luo’s “hazy, drunken eyes” cleared a little.
“Jiejie’s baijiu sounds…” Qi Song said, her eyes bright and innocent, “like Wangzai Milk.”
Yu Luo: “…”
A hot tide pumped out from her heart and climbed all over her body, making her blush from her face to her ears.
