The public meeting was arranged to be held in a movie theater that hadn’t been used for a long time. The reason for choosing this location was its good soundproofing, which would prevent attracting the attacks of zombie bats.
Luo Ling didn’t know what was going to happen today, so he was assigned to maintain order outside the theater.
Su Wenwen and Luo Xi were in the audience below the stage. The higher-ups1 and Old Master Luo had all arrived. The screening hall was packed with people, and many others could only wait for news outside or at home, creating a noisy clamor.
This meeting wasn’t just to provide an explanation about the antidote; its contents also needed to be transmitted to other bases so that everyone could prepare for the wait as soon as possible.
The meeting began. The lights went out, leaving only the area in front of the screen illuminated. Seeing this, everyone immediately quieted down.
The opening remarks were very official. First, they expressed their apologies to the crowd and stated that they would definitely ferret out the culprit behind the scenes. Then, they spoke about the current survival situation: supplies, medical care, weapons, the changes in the zombies outside the base, and so on.
In short, the situation was not optimistic, and listening to it left people feeling terrified. So much so that when the matter of transferring the elderly from the forbidden zone hospital to a place outside the base to recuperate was brought up later, no one voiced any opposition.
Down in the audience, Su Wenwen wasn’t really listening to them drone on with this nonsense. She was carefully watching Lin Wan, who was mixed in with the crowd. Although the cold-proof suit bundled her up tightly and she had Chen Zixuan and Wang Kelin with her, she couldn’t afford to be careless.
Today’s scene was the best opportunity to capture Luo Tianyang. However, Luo Tianyang wasn’t a fool. A portion of the surrounding security personnel had been arranged by him. The man behind him was an extremely loyal dog’s leg, whose ability was lightning. Su Wenwen probably couldn’t handle him; only Luo Xi’s mental power could contend with it.
As for Luo Tianyang himself, he had never shown any sign of having an ability. His presence in the book was also very low, and there was no mention of whether he was an ability user. Su Wenwen just assumed he was one. If a fight really broke out later, she would be responsible for capturing Luo Tianyang.
As the speech was nearing its end, Old Master Luo finally took the microphone and said a few words. He then glanced at Ji Qingshuang beside him. His gaze was somewhat complicated, as if he knew something but was powerless to act, and it filled with guilt.
“Regarding the matter of the antidote, my son, Luo Tianyang, will speak on my behalf.” After speaking, Old Master Luo passed the microphone to Luo Tianyang.
Luo Tianyang stood before the crowd. Seeing everyone’s eyes focused on him, he felt an indescribable sensation. It wasn’t the feeling of raising his eyebrows and exhaling breath2; rather, it was more like excitement at the prospect of soon controlling everything.
“Everyone, there’s no need to worry too much. I can guarantee that we can develop the antidote within a year.”
One year. Waiting a bit, enduring a bit—that wasn’t a problem. So, their expressions relaxed considerably. However, what they didn’t know was that not everyone would be able to possess this antidote.
Luo Tianyang’s goal was to control the antidote and thereby make everyone submit to his will.
Just as Luo Tianyang was speaking of heavenly flowers falling in disorder3, Lin Yu, who had been hiding in the shadows, suddenly appeared. He snatched the microphone from Luo Tianyang’s hand and passed it to Ji Qingshuang.
Everyone was stunned by this scene.
Ji Qingshuang said, “What this person says cannot be trusted. He was the one who sent people to steal the data from the laboratory, and he was the one who sent people to assassinate Lin Wan. He doesn’t need a year at all; he can replicate the antidote in just a few days. And the antidote he produces will be given first to those who obey him.”
These words made the crowd explode like a pot4. They weren’t fools. On the contrary, all this time of fumbling, crawling, rolling, and hitting5 in the apocalypse had long since taught them that those without strength could only wait for the charity of the strong to have a chance at survival.
If the antidote was controlled, the first to become cannon fodder would be the ordinary people without abilities. To obtain the antidote, they would lose their dignity, become slaves, and even their precious lives would lose all value.
They didn’t doubt the Commander-in-Chief’s words in the slightest. Just as they were about to voice their questions, Luo Tianyang spoke first, “Do you have any proof?”
Someone in the crowd chimed in, “That’s right, there has to be proof. Even if you’re the Commander-in-Chief, you can’t just slander people with an empty mouth.”
Su Wenwen glanced at the speaker. The man exchanged a look with the dog’s leg behind Luo Tianyang. They were clearly in it together, deliberately putting pressure on Ji Qingshuang.
She subtly gave a look to the cadets6 around her. The cadets then quietly fanned out, sneaking up behind those people.
At this moment, Lin Yu dragged the Adjutant onto the stage. The Adjutant was forced down, his hair a messy tangle like weeds, looking utterly wretched.
Seeing this, Su Wenwen was momentarily confused about what was happening. She glanced at Luo Xi, but she just patted her shoulder without saying anything.
“The proof is right here in my hands.” Lin Yu held a walkie-talkie, spoke a few words, and the projector started running. The large screen behind them lit up.
Luo Tianyang turned to look, and his expression changed. It was footage of the Adjutant stealing from the laboratory. The strange thing was, the Adjutant’s theft went smoothly, with no guards in sight, as if he had been deliberately allowed in.
The scene flashed to footage of the Adjutant leading men to assassinate Lin Wan, followed by the Adjutant’s chilling voice: “Sorry, it was Luo Tianyang’s order. I could only follow it.”
This sentence instantly made Luo Tianyang’s voice crack. “Nonsense! His words alone can’t be considered proof. Someone else could have instructed him to frame me.”
A few people in the audience were just about to speak when the cadets pressed knives against the smalls of their backs, and they instantly froze.
Sweat beaded on Luo Tianyang’s forehead. Facing the stares of so many people, it was just like the times he had made mistakes in the past, when the family servants and the outside media would scrutinize his every move. He even had to be careful just taking a sip of water.
This pressure was suffocating him. He panicked for a moment and could only cast a pleading look toward Old Master Luo.
Old Master Luo coughed, walked to the front of the stage, and said to Ji Qingshuang, “There is indeed a possibility of a frame-up. If you cannot produce more evidence, forgive me for not being able to punish my son.”
Ji Qingshuang sighed. As expected, Old Master Luo would still choose to protect Luo Tianyang in the end. She wouldn’t comment on it, because as a mother, she might have done the same.
“Lin Yu, play the recording!”
Ji Qingshuang’s voice sounded indifferent. Hearing this, Lin Yu subconsciously glanced at the pale-faced Adjutant and could only use the walkie-talkie to order the person in the projection room to play the recording.
The recording was a conversation between the Adjutant and Luo Tianyang. It was basically Luo Tianyang praising the Adjutant for stealing what he wanted and stating that from now on, they were people on the same boat and that he would place great importance on the Adjutant.
Luo Tianyang’s face turned green. He stared daggers at the Adjutant. Only he knew that the conversation had taken place in his darkroom, a place only he ever entered. It was impossible for there to be a recording device. He had only taken the Adjutant there once, so it was obvious that only the Adjutant could have recorded this conversation.
Seeing that Old Master Luo’s face was even paler than the Adjutant’s, Luo Tianyang instantly understood. All of this was just to force Old Master Luo to abandon him, his own son.
The cadets in the audience roared, “Fuck, you turtle eggs7, shouldn’t you be giving us an explanation?”
The others joined in the shouting, screaming themselves hoarse. After all, their own lives were at stake; they couldn’t just place themselves outside the matter8.
The scene instantly descended into chaos. Fortunately, they were inside the movie theater, so the clamor was contained, with only a faint sound leaking out.
Old Master Luo opened his mouth, but looking at the furious crowd below, he couldn’t say a word.
The guards held back the crowd and managed to calm them down with great difficulty. The dog’s leg behind Luo Tianyang spoke up, “Old Master Luo, recordings can also be forged. We need a professional to authenticate it. Why don’t we detain the Adjutant first and investigate slowly?”
“That makes sense. The Adjutant stealing the lab data is a nail on a board9.” A higher-up chimed in, “Let’s just lock him up first and investigate slowly.”
If things were really dragged out, the final result would only be the Adjutant carrying the pot10. Everyone knew this in their hearts. But compared to a single life, the development of the antidote was certainly more important. If a mental ability user were to interfere with the Adjutant, Ji Qingshuang’s plot might even be exposed.
And as for Old Master Luo, he could never bring himself to give up his only son. If Ji Qingshuang were truly exposed, he would, without a doubt, choose his son.
Su Wenwen worried that things would end just like that. Unsure whether to act forcefully or to press down on the soldiers and not move11, she kept her eyes fixed on Ji Qingshuang, hoping for some kind of hint.
But Ji Qingshuang just stood quietly in the spotlight, watching the Adjutant. The moment Old Master Luo was about to nod, the Adjutant’s ability erupted. He threw off the guards holding him, snatched a gun, and pointed it at his own temple. “Old Master Luo,” he said, “if I’m detained, I won’t make it out alive. You know better than anyone what kind of character your son has. Rather than be humiliated to death by your son, I’d rather leave with a smile right now.”
Su Wenwen was shocked. The Adjutant was going to use his own death to solidify Luo Tianyang’s guilt and protect Ji Qingshuang.
Before anyone could react, a bolt of lightning struck the Adjutant. His muscles spasmed uncontrollably, and his finger was completely unable to pull the trigger.
“Ah!”
The Adjutant felt his entire body burning and aching, causing his face to contort. Tears and snot streamed down, and a patch on his pants grew wet. It was a painful and cruel sight, but even so, he did not let go of the gun.
Everyone present had experienced static shock before. Even such a tiny jolt could make one’s scalp tingle, let alone what the Adjutant was going through now. Staring at the blinding lightning, everyone felt a chill of terror, a fear and helplessness even greater than when facing zombies. They even turned their heads away, unable to watch any longer.
The electricity-discharging dog’s leg said in a nonchalant tone, “Drop the gun, and I’ll stop electrocuting you.”
The Adjutant glared furiously, the muscles all over his body bulging, straining his clothes taut. He simply would not let go.
The electrocution continued. The hair on the Adjutant’s body was singed to the point of giving off a burnt smell. Just as the situation reached a stalemate, something in the air suddenly created a momentary obstruction, causing the electric current to miss its target for half a second.
“Bang!” The bullet left the chamber smoothly.
A red flower12 bloomed on the Adjutant’s forehead, blossoming along with the smile on his face. His heavy body fell stiffly, tumbling off the stage with an indescribable, tragic heroism.
