Early this morning, Luo Ling was waiting for Luo Xi outside the laboratory. He said that Old Master Luo had told her to come home for lunch and to bring Su Wenwen along as well.
It wasn’t that Old Master Luo hated Su Wenwen, but he definitely didn’t like her, and it was even more unlikely that he would have specifically instructed them to bring her back to the Luo family home. After thinking it over, it was probably Luo Tianyang’s arrangement.
The two of them did not refuse.
On the way to the Luo family home, Luo Ling smiled like a child, truly believing that the family could simply have a meal together.
“Sigh, it’s just a pity that Luo Qi has become foolish. I asked Uncle what happened, but he wouldn’t tell me anything. Do you guys know why Luo Qi became like this?” Luo Ling sighed while driving. “Forget it. It’s not so bad that he’s like this now. At least he won’t cause trouble, and he lives happily.”
Luo Ling’s impression of Luo Qi was still that of a silk-pants scion1. At that time, he couldn’t be called a good person, but he wasn’t bad enough to harm anyone.
So when he heard that Luo Qi had become foolish, he just sighed a little, without any particular feelings beyond that.
Ji Qingshuang was also at this family banquet. As soon as the group entered, they gravitated toward her. Seeing this, Old Master Luo struck the ground heavily with his cane, quite displeased.
Luo Ling quickly smiled and greeted him.
Old Master Luo’s expression softened as he said, “It’s still early for lunch. Sit wherever you like. Have some fruit to tide you over.”
Hearing this, Su Wenwen of course did not sit down, but instead followed behind Ji Qingshuang to help prepare the fruit.
Luo Ling presented the wine he had prepared beforehand to Old Master Luo, saying, “Grandfather, this is a medicinal wine2 I happened to find outside. It’s for nourishing the body3. You keep it and drink it.”
Old Master Luo did not accept it. Instead, he asked, “I already have half a foot stepped into the earth4. You young people should keep it for yourselves. Besides, I’m not the one who called you over for dinner this time. It was Tianyang.”
The implication was that Old Master Luo would never lower his head to ask them to come home; it was all Luo Tianyang’s idea. He was acting just like Luo Xi when she gets aojiao5.
Just as the cut fruit was served, Luo Tianyang arrived with his foolish son.
The current Luo Qi couldn’t even walk steadily and needed Luo Tianyang’s support from time to time. After sitting on the sofa, he just kept staring at Luo Xi with a foolish smile.
Seeing his foolish grandson, Old Master Luo’s heart grew heavy. He stood up, leaning on his cane, and said, “You all chat first. Just come and get me when it’s time to eat.”
The page had been turned on6 the matter of Luo Xi having made Luo Qi foolish, but that didn’t mean Old Master Luo wasn’t still angry. He didn’t even look at Luo Xi, letting Ji Qingshuang support him and walking right past her.
Luo Ling, not knowing the reason, thought Old Master Luo was still blaming Luo Xi for his father’s death. Wanting them to reconcile, he got up and followed Old Master Luo out.
With the three of them gone, the atmosphere instantly grew tense. Su Wenwen sat close to Luo Xi, watching Luo Tianyang’s every move.
Luo Tianyang’s face was expressionless. He handed the fruit platter to Luo Qi, who grabbed the fruit with his hands and got it all over his mouth while eating.
Luo Tianyang frowned and said, “Wipe your mouth.”
Luo Qi wiped his mouth messily with his sleeve, making it even dirtier. The dirtier it got, the more impatient Luo Tianyang’s expression became, the veins on his forehead throbbing.
Su Wenwen watched from the side, her heart pounding with fear, feeling as if Luo Tianyang would start beating him any second. But after a long moment, Luo Tianyang didn’t do anything. Instead, he got up, wrung out a towel, and wiped his son’s face and hands.
She couldn’t quite figure this person out.
Su Wenwen glanced back at Luo Xi. Her long, thick black hair was nestled against the side of her face, and she was sitting perfectly upright and still. Su Wenwen wondered if all the Luos had inherited this expressionless gene, making them equally impossible to read.
It felt as though Su Wenwen was the only one worrying, not knowing what move Luo Tianyang would make next. It wasn’t until Luo Xi gently hooked her pinky finger that Su Wenwen’s anxious heart settled a little.
Luo Tianyang reached into his pocket, placed a recording pen on the table, and said, “I saw you put this on my desk through the surveillance footage.”
Luo Xi remained impassive, waiting for Luo Tianyang to continue. “I don’t understand. Since you had the recording pen, why didn’t you give it to your grandfather or Ji Qingshuang?”
“If this were a time of peace, I wouldn’t have given it to them either. I would have given it directly to the police,” Luo Xi said faintly.
Luo Tianyang chuckled. “So you want me dead, huh? But have you ever considered that I’ve been planning this for so long, my helpers aren’t just those few people? Once they’re on my ship, it’s impossible for them to wash themselves clean7. To keep this matter hidden, they have no choice but to cooperate with me.”
“The bodyguards around your grandfather were arranged by me. I also have people in the restricted area school. I’m telling you this today just to ask one thing: can we let this matter drop?”
“I’m old, and my son is foolish. Power is useless to me now. If you’re willing to let this matter drop, I promise you that from now on, I’ll be a good person…”
Luo Xi sneered. “A good person?”
“If you want to be a good person, why don’t you go confess to Grandfather instead of threatening me here?” Luo Xi’s face was cold. “If it were my older brother, you might have been able to control him to some extent. But the person you’re facing is me. Do you think I would compromise for the sake of others?”
Luo Tianyang knew she wouldn’t, which was why he front-loaded his threats. He stroked a drowsy Luo Qi, his voice drawn out. “Must you force my hand?”
“You’re the one forcing me. Why… why did you have to kill him? Was the right of inheritance really that important to you?”
“Of course it’s important. You wouldn’t understand.”
Luo Tianyang laughed self-deprecatingly.
Old Master Luo was extremely pedantic; otherwise, he wouldn’t have arranged a childhood engagement8 for Luo Xi. In his view, only the eldest son had the right of inheritance. No matter how hard the second son worked, he could only get a position in the group, take some shares, and sit, eat, and wait for death.
As his biological son, there were times he was treated worse than Ji Qingshuang. At least Ji Qingshuang could display her talents because of his big brother.
And him? No matter what suggestion he made, others would only agree on the surface before turning around to ask for Ji Qingshuang’s and his big brother’s opinions. Only after getting a nod from those two would his suggestion be approved.
Originally, if he had just endured it, he could have muddled through this life. But his own son was a scoundrel, which made Old Master Luo look down on him even more.
He held a breath of resentment in his heart and just wanted to build a career to show Old Master Luo. So, he took all his savings and invested them.
Because his big brother had opened a new media company, he also got into new media. However, the film projects he invested in had mediocre box office results. No amount of promotion worked; instead, it just attracted a wave of complaints.
Clearly, his big brother’s business was steaming and rising day by day9, so his own judgment couldn’t be that bad. Later, there was a potentially huge hit drama with a famous veteran actor starring in it. In order to invest in this show, he could only mortgage his company for a loan, considering it staking everything on a single throw10.
In the end, the veteran actor was exposed for scandalous material11 and went directly to prison. The investment hit the water and skipped away12, the company was gone, and he still owed a butt-full of debt13. He didn’t have the face to ask Old Master Luo for money, so he could only go beg his big brother.
But his big brother told Old Master Luo about it. Although the money was eventually paid back, the price was that Old Master Luo explicitly forbade him from making any investments.
Suddenly, he felt like a bird locked in a cage, able to see only a window-sized patch of sky. This terrified him, and at the same time, made him bite and grind his teeth at his big brother’s actions.
He didn’t regret killing his big brother.
Without him, no one would dare say ‘no’ when Luo Tianyang spoke, and Old Master Luo would finally look at him properly. These were things Luo Xi would never understand.
“It seems a reconciliation between us is impossible.” Luo Tianyang glanced at his watch. “It’s about time. You should be receiving the news now.”
Hearing this, Su Wenwen’s brow twitched. Immediately after, both her and Luo Xi’s phones received a text message at the same time.
(Sisi is missing.)
(The laboratory has been attacked.)
Su Wenwen looked at Luo Tianyang’s grim smile. It was obvious he had no intention of reconciling; all that talk was just to stall for time.
She hadn’t expected Luo Tianyang to move so quickly. It seemed the machine on the Ao family’s side was almost finished, and it was very likely that it had also been damaged.
But there was no time to think about that now. Su Wenwen stood up and said to Luo Xi, “I’ll go find Sisi.”
Luo Xi nodded. “I’ll go to the lab.”
As the two were leaving, Luo Tianyang didn’t stop them. Instead, he said with a smile, “Not staying for lunch? Should I go say hello to Luo Ling for you?”
It seemed Luo Tianyang had a fully-formed bamboo in his chest14 regarding this attack. Although the two of them had a response plan, they couldn’t guarantee its success rate.
Su Wenwen and Luo Xi each got a taxi and went their separate ways. When Su Wenwen arrived at the restricted area school, she saw Wang Kelin and Chen Zixuan waiting at the school gate.
Wang Kelin briefly summarized what had happened: “Last night, I confirmed Sisi went into her dorm. When I came to pick her up this morning, I found she was gone. I asked the children in her dorm, and they said Sisi was taken out by the Chinese teacher early in the morning for questioning and never came back.”
“I checked the surveillance cameras, but they were all covered with chewing gum, so nothing was recorded. What do we do? Sisi wasn’t wearing a winter coat when she went out. I’m afraid she’ll freeze.”
“Calm down. Sisi is very smart, and she’s a water-type ability user. She won’t be in trouble right away,” Su Wenwen said to Wang Kelin. “Use your ability and check the snow for any spider silk and horse tracks15.”
“Chen Zixuan, fly Wang Kelin up high so she can get a clearer view.”
Chen Zixuan nodded, leaped into the air holding Wang Kelin, and Su Wenwen stood below, looking up.
At this moment, she was somewhat thankful that the snow on the ground hadn’t melted. Chen Zixuan was currently the only ability user who could fly, so there was a high probability that tracks were left in the snow.
Sure enough, it wasn’t long before the two flew back down. “We found a woman’s footprints. They’re deeper than the others, likely because she was forcibly carrying Sisi. Also, there are marks of water freezing into ice around the footprints. I followed the direction of the marks and found a house in the woods. Sisi must be there.”
Su Wenwen quickly had Chen Zixuan fly her toward the woods. It was quite strenuous for Chen Zixuan to carry two people by herself. The flight was wobbly, and they almost fell several times.
Su Wenwen could only feel the cold wind on her face. Looking at the ground below her, she felt a profound lack of security.
